It was almost as if her body was holding back from reacting until now. The nausea hit her like a wall, and she spent the next.
He froze in shock grabbing the stick as it shook in her hand, putting it away and gathering her wiping off her tears of joy
"Looks like it wasnt burnt chai afterall" he chuckled kissing her fully, many times
She fell on his chest weakly
"I am not even sure if its accurate" she said
He picked up the packaging and read it carefully "Date of manufacture is last month" he informed
She cringed
She had spent years buying these and months testing
This was her secret routine every time her period was delayed by a couple hours
She imagined nausea a couple times
Feigned tiredness and fatigue and returned home early from work a few months
By the end of the evening, her best friend arrived in full force breaking her heart to pieces
He was on the phone with her Doc, she went to the bathroom to throw up again, and found the stick and looked at it from various angles
Felt her belly oh so gently

She wondered how many days she was
She changed weakly from her saree into her night clothes, threw up again and went to bed

"I am almost NINEEE" Nivi said primly
"Amma Dadu was asking whats for dinner" she insisted

"About what love?" he asked
"Amma is acting sick... in Vandu Periamma's house she did a lot of dishes, made chai... and cleaned the kitchen" Nivi declared
He nodded exhaling
He hated it when she did dishes and housework but they had fought enough times about it he had given up
"Akka's maid had the day off, paavam avalukku Pongal" (she needs to celebrate too) Ii explained
Ranjan came up smiling joyously
"GUDIYA... mubarkaan" he said hoarsely
"Dadooo" Nivi looked at him confused
"Umm... woh... um... betaji Amma ko Pongal ke liye wish nahi kara" he composed himself as he handed II a long red velvet box
II sat up weakly
"i dont need Pongal gifts... 10 saal go gaya Dad" she chuckled
"Pongal ki koi gift nahi haigi" he said and stopped
They wud tell Nivi later, being only 9 they wanted to wait until II was 3 months or over
"I am asking Mahavir to bring food" R&B said
"Dont be silly I am going to go down" she said
"Yes yes... yess yes... Amma is getting up" Nivi squealed
II's back hurt really badly
"Aap ik kaam karo, Dadu saath neeche chalo, Amma ke liye kuch vadiya dinner banate hain" he said

"Ofcourse she can... she did dishes at Vandu Periamma's house?" he said

"I am telling you I DONT want a girl" II cudnt wait until the door was shut
He grinned

He bend down
"i am going to do my best" he whispered on her neck
"U did already you smug..." he crushed her falling over... as they felt each others' body.
"U have to probably remind me everyday whats going on" she whispered
"I bet u wont need my help soon" he winked feeling her lower belly by reaching inside her elasticized lounge pants and was a lil startled to find her skin tightening
"Wow" he whispered raggedly
"I want a boy" she whispered softly
"The next one could be a boy.. I am patient" he groaned releasing a sigh on her cleft
"IDUVE... took 9 freaking years" (this one) she reminded holding his face
"You didnt want one for the longest time after the miscarriage remember?" he whispered
She nodded self consciously
"I know... I thought I am being punished"
His phone rang
It was her Doc
"We can have her come in tomorrow?" the nurse practitioner offered
"Sure... what time... thanks" he said and looked at II
She opened her tired eyes and yawned "After 11 AM?" "I have to take time off" she whispered
"How about Noon" he said kindly
The Doc's office agreed
Ranjan and R&B made plans late into the night about how to break the news to Vandu, Sam and Iyers
Bala had stopped by to drop off Munirka's pongal
But couldnt stay since he had to go see a friend in RK Puram before returning on such a rainy nite
After dropping Nivi off at school Ranjan went with them to the Doc's app
The Doc determined II was over 8 weeks pregnant!!
So they decided to find a heart beat
The nurse squirted the lotion and probed...
there was a heart beat!!!!!!!!!
II's heart jumped everytime she heard the swish
"It shud be a boy nah?" she asked the tech
The tech giggled aloud

"TWINS??" R&B gasped, as his jaw dropped
"Looks like it" the Doc said surprised
II groaned at her astonishing good fortune, whimpering sobs escaping her soft face
R&B walked out in a hurry and waved to a Golf Digest reading Ranjan
"She is going to have twins" he said
"Rabbaaa!!" Ranjan wept... handing the magazine as a gift to R&B in his delirium
