"One stupid test"
"Akka we tried everything. I am at apoint where I dont want to talk about it anymore.
I am almost 36 now, its not like I can get pregnant next month" II mumbled rinsing off the pots and pans in Akka's kitchen
The maid had the day off the sink was piled ceiling high
It was Pongal afternoon. The winds were not letting up. It was cold, moist and rainy.
"I cant believe Delhi is getting colder" II made a face
"Appa was saying Ambala was freezing. He cudnt last more than a week" Akka said gruffly
She had taken a nap, not II
Nivi was finishing up a sewing project on Akka's fancy machine
She was making a quilted dress with embroidery, an extreme project
"Akka I will go home after chai" II mumbled
"Take some pongal home di" Akka urged...
"Give me only a little" II said
"Amma is too far now in Rohini, no Tamilians I know of in DDA" Akka chuckled walking out to the dining area to get milk from the frig
"Ka Shravu varaana for Spring break?" ( is he coming?) II asked shaking water off her hands
"Its not a foriegn college ... who knows" "GRE solraan, India solran, who knows where he wants to go from BITS" Akka said
"Ask him to apply to Vanderbilt... looks like Nandu will be there only" II told her
"Nandu can be anywhere... I cant spend 40 lakhs a year for Grad school" Akka whined
"Vandu chai taraya ma?" (can I have chai?) Thatha asked
"Do pa" (yes soon) Vandu hollered
"No solreya? Seri seri... tiffinoda kudikaren" (are u saying no? thats OK i will have it with my afternoon snack then)
Thatha's hearing was almost fully gone
Bala was asleep inside with Shubhang... who was recovering from flu
II's phone rang
"Kya hai? Ghar par tyohar mein bhi nahi aate ho" Akka yelled at R&B
"I am sorry Vandita, hey... can I talk to II please?" she asked impatiently
"Pehle mere se baat karo" she urged "Adula pannade chai, adu teenjudum" (dont make chai in that pot it will get burnt)
"I already started... I am so sick of sweet pongal, do u have any murukku or mixture ka?" II asked opening and closing tins
Thatha waddled by "Kondey nee eppo de vandey?" (when did u come?)
"Umm... oru 1 maniku?" II crinkled her eyes thoughtfully
"avan varaleyo?" (is he not here?)
"Ille thatha... eppo paar book alla computer" (reads a book or is on his PC)
"Yaaroda scooter?" (whose scooter) he asked
"Ayyo thatha... BOOK AND COMPUTER" II shouted
"Naraya thhotham kudipane kudikarano?" (does he still drink water a lot?)
II laughed heartly and nodded safely not talking
"Ketten sollu" (send my regards) Thatha mumbled
II handed him a warmed up bowl of chakara pongal
"Eduthundu po... nambathu Vandu nanna pannuvo" (take some with u Vandu is a great cook) "Raghavana? avarku kudu" (is ur FIL's name Raghavan? take some for him)
II laughed delighted
Thatha was packed from head to toe in monkey cap, multiple layers of socks, a pajama, thermal and two sweaters
His hand was old and wrinkly... he held the bowl with trembling fingers
II grabbed it back and waited for him to be seated on the sofa and handed to him
Tried to work Akka's sapce heater and couldnt
The apartment was freezing
Thatha was watching some Pongal special on Sun without interest
Coconut tree emoji chased a pot of bubbling pongal as they scrolled at the bottom
"Akka Suriya movie I am going home" she yelled
"Abhi deti hoon ruko"
"What did u do to chai" Akka yelled
II grabbed the phone... Akka poured out a bubbled over chai in mugs, and thatha's in davara tumbler
"Hey" he greeted
"Thank u for waking up" she mocked
"I was willing to sleep, you woke me up at 7 AM for Pongal" he shot back
"Hey Nivi to idhar chhod doon?" she asked
"Why?" he demanded
"Akka is tired of Shubh, she is saying I can take him home" II requested
"Bring both" he said
"Ek din usko kahin rukne do"
Thatha was pouring chai back and forth, back and forth between davara and tumbler, spilling a lot
Finally he sipped noisily and nodded
"Fusht class" he said and smacked his lips
II sat by him with her mug
The smell of spillover chai catching the flames in the burner in the kitchen got to her nostrils and her stomach rumbled
She drank her chai trying to hold down her nausea
"Main rakhoon? Dono ko laati hoon" she said mellow
"No tantrum?" he asked
He teased her a lot these days
He found her deflated and disappointed many evenings
Found her going through Nivi's baby things...
Found her having searched Baby center for secondary infertility on the ipad...
There was no issue... and there was no baby...
"Mujhe pata hai, main Munirka rukoongi to tum lene aa jaaogey... I am not fighting" she said smiling weakly
"Lets go out tonight?" he offered
"Rohini jaayen?" she asked cheerfully
"Umm.. I was thinking we cud go to the new pub on Kautilya Marg?" he offered
"Woh ghar ke itne paas hai If I dress up mujhe dor jaana hai" she claimed
"Fine how about Matheran?" he asked
"Dont be so extra" she mumbled
"Get home soon II" he said achingly
She hung up and went to Thatha Paati bath sink and retched for 20 minutes
Returning plump and red faced
"I burnt the chai" she told Akka who was cooing with Athim near a sleeping Shubh on the bed
"whatt?" Akka asked confused
"I dont feel good ka" she said quickly not saying she threw up
"Pati ki yaad aa gayi, bhej yaar isko" Athim teased gruffly
"Nahi" II lied
Jaise taise she left Akka's at 6 ish and got home at 6:30, it was raining harder
Only Nivi returned Shubh got a fever...
She threw up again in the ground floor guest powder bathroom
"Amma is sick" Nivi said confused
He ran down...
"Whats going on II?" he asked as she lay on the chaise lounge chair
"U cast a sickness spell so i wud get home" she muttered
He felt her cheek... with the back of his fingers
"OK?" he asked
"Nahi boli to bahar nahi lekar jaaogey" she said
He gathered and hugged her
"Silly girl" he muttered
Ranjan came down the grand staircase and found them in a clinch
R&B let her go reluctantly
"Ki hoya gudiya... bimar haigi beta?"
"Umm.. no... Nivi's a motor mouth Dad" II lied
"Wonder where she gets that from?" R&B asked curiously
"Shut up" she was nauseous again
When she returned the men wanted to take her to the Doc
II refused and went to the kitchen
"Lets go II" he ordered
"Chancey ille poda"
"Lets go" he said
"I am fine"
"Then go up and test urself" he muttered stroking her neck

A quick jolt stunned her as her mind calculated madly the various days and dates and hours
wave after wave of nervous excitement swept through
"Kaise? I am too old now" she said fighting tears
He held her face in his palms... and laughed... "No u are not" he whispered thumbing her lips
She looked tired in her gorgeous crimson Pongal saree, she had ditched jewelry and just wore the ruby nose ring and ruby jhumkas to Akka's
"U are not a doctor" she whispered raggedly
"I agree" he nodded
"I dont even buy those stupid tests any more" she said lowering her gaze, causing the rivulets to flow down rapidly
"There must be one stupid test some place" he wished
Ranjan walked by and grabbed a bottle of juice
"Kee hoya beta" he asked
"Shes OK" R&B promised, but not getting Ranjan's hopes up
"I dont have to pee" II chuckled and sniffled
He laughed
They stayed downstairs for the next hour as II assessed leftovers from the morning, and began dinner prep
She went up to pee
He dug through her many bath cabinets and had found a test
She couldnt look at the result as her eyes fogged up quickly with tears, otherwise she wud have seen the two dark blue lines...
