The thing is: a person has to be blamed for every incident and from every perspective, because people want so.Whatever he does, he is bound to be criticized because people have decided that. It's very unfair to him if readers of the epic/viewers of the serial trap him from two sides. They never read the original epic, never want to understand him. And they hide their inability of understanding his greatness by deliberate misunderstanding.
That reminds me, Dharmaraj could predict this in Dwapar. In Udyog Parva he says, "If I support war I will be blamed for the destruction. And if I want peace then also I will be blamed for not fulfilling my kshatriya Dharma." Now you can see that exactly this is happening.
But you know, the saddest part, sadder than even Dharmaraj being blamed. I have seen even the Lord being blamed and that's just sad.
If you ask me, there are three people to be blamed the most for the war:
Dhritarashtra
Gandhari and
Shakuni.
Dhritarashtra by his passive agreement with Shakuni, allowing himself to be misguided by his brother-in-law. He allowed himself to resent his brother and consequentially, their sons.
Gandhari by her silence, letting her brother carry on with his misdeeds, his misguidance of her sons.
Shakuni, in general for conspiring, instigating his nephews, and Dhrit and Gandhari.
