Sam stayed, going home around 3 after multiple calls from Lasya's nanny
She told Amma about how hard it was to get along with her MIL
And quietly revealed how one of her SILs had moved out of her house and was living with her best friend in Wisconsin
"My in laws are here, and yet not" Sam said somberly
"I understand, marriage is a compromise sometimes" Amma offered wise advise as her daughter took an oil bath, ate the cocnut rice and curled up on the bed and napped
"Some make more than the others"
"She is very needy Aunty, she hates her in laws more than I hate Tan's Mom" Sam whispered
Amma nodded sighing
"My in laws want to be with their daughter but cant because she is living with a friend, school is still in session waha par" Sam whispered
"It will all work out. She will go back to her husband's house soon" Amma reassured squeezing a weeping Sam's hand
"My MIL thinks I got a good life, I dont deserve it but her daughters who deserve it dont have a good life" Sam spoke between tears
"Does your Dad know?"
"Nahi kisi ko nahi kaha maine. Bas ghar ke bahar aap" Sam smiled
Amma smiled
"Ur secret is safe with me" Amma nodded
"My family has been through so much with Ma, and Dad's scandal and everything. How can my saasu ma think I lead a cushy life?" Sam accused
"We dont lways think about the others no?" Amma offered
Sam nodded
II called Ranjan after lunch to let him know what she had bought for him and how beautiful the Nungambakkam house was
When he asked her when she would return to MM she swallowed and stumbled, all without Sam's knowledge
Appa complained of his knee hurting after bonking it on the seat on their flight back home
Amma worried if he had broken something
Appa's legs were a persistent worry to all
They didnt have 24 hour help or children living with them
Appa becoming immobile was scary
Appa continued to gush over II's good fortune
Vandu called and II showed her all the sarees over Skype
II had shown her the peach from Chennai, now Sam took it, but Vandu was very gracious
"Avalukku Kanjeevaram adisayam dee, naan vangikaren if I happen to go" (For them south sarees are a novelty, not for us, I will get more) Akka acquiesced generously
Amma woke her singer star for chai at 6 PM
She lay in bed missing dude
Evenings were her favorite to cuddle, both in Paris & MM
Ranjan would have Nivi and she would get some alone time with her hottie
It would be those rare occasions when he would be chatty, sharing random music facts and startup scoops with her
Eventually flirting making love and flirting until II's need for chai would hoist her out of bed
She picked up her phone and scrolled to the last conversation
PAAVI
CAN YOU ATLEAST ASK HOW IT WENT?
WHAT THE HELL DID I EVER DO TO YOU?
YOU ALWAYS KNEW HOW MUCH I LOVE TO SING
HOW CAN YOU BE SO UNACCOMODATING?
"Get back to the routine from tomorrow. Porum romba suthiyachu" (uve roamed enough) Amma's voice woke her up from trance
"I wish I stayed there for a month and shopped T Nagar every day, I could work in Panagal Park if they gave me a job" II sighed
"Dino shop pannalam, duddu? (u can shop every day where will the money come from?)
Amma spoke from her own middle class perspective
She couldnt shop every day with Appa and her situation
II COULD
She married a venture capitalist with a few million lying around
But the venture capitalist and Amma's daughter both had egos the size of US debt... in trillions
"Appa is still hurting I will take him to the doctor after work" II began her strategizing
"Dont u have to go home?" Amma asked startled
"Dad is in Chandigarh for a few days" she said, leaving the door open with her definition of "few days"
"Paavam u are not there, Nivi is not there, avano pesa maatan but he will still be home, but he is in Paris too" Amma nodded
"I am thinking I will enjoy with Appa and you for a couple" "Umm" Ii dragged
NO NO NO
DONT SAY WEEKS OR MONTHS
YOU HAVE NOT THOUGHT THIS THROUGH
YOU FOOL
JUST LEAVE IT FOR NOW
SEE HOW NEXT WEEK GOES
"You want to go by Wed? Athai said she will come on Wed" Amma informed cheerfully
"Yayyy Hope Lakshmi comes to, I want to see the looks on the faces of her daughters when I give them their Disney pavadais"
Someone known to the music composer a Chennai hot shot's bored wife was creating Disney images in Kanjeevaram off white silk, II had bought Ariel and Anna embossed pavadais for the girls.
Overpriced but hand crafted
Amma smiled, obviously happy she would get to see her granddaughter every evening of the week
Appa while drinking chai was questioned by Amma about how many times R&B called II
Amma wanted her daughters to be needed, it was her own way of measuring the health of the marriage
"Naan paakale, when she was in the studio he may have called" (I didnt notice) Appa tattled
"He is a busy man" Amma defended her fave SIL
"If he had gone they cud have gone to Kanchipuram and gone to the Kamakshi Temple... avanukku adullelam interest kedayadu" (he doesnt care abt such thing)" Appa was disappointed
"This is a choice she made no? She didnt marry an Iyer boy. They are not very religious. She is OK with it" Amma squirmed
"She is OK with EVERYTHING. Not accompanying her to chennai, not calling, not visiting temples with her, not having a job in Delhi" Appa expressed angst over what was to him was a uncared for daughter.
"She finally got a chance to sing. Lets focus on that" Amma refused to be influenced by Appa's honesty
