@ Shruthi, sorry for not posting my views as there was nothing much left for me to but in. This Deep dan we do it during Karthika masa (starts on Diwali and runs the whole month). We lit diyas not just mata's temples but also in Shivji's temple. On that poormina day of Kartika masa, every temp,e will be lit with lakhs of diyas and it is also called Laksha deeposthsava. Since this is on an occasion, you have used it on new year day and that was a nice strategy to use the age old lady who was deprived of entering the temple just because she lost her husband. Since it was the temple even that lady would have agreed it with eagerness as she could fill her eyes with the view of deity, but if it were some religious function at home, may she would have backed out.

Shruthi, however much we are progressed, we can't change it 100% and one such incident was when my Mom refused to welcome my SIL during her Grihapravesh since she is a widow. She said come what may, she doesn't want her DIL to face any problems. But later once she was welcomed by my aunt, then she blessed them and gave gifts and the chest key. They have bonded like mother and daughter but even today, my mom doesn't do any rituals which are meant for newly weds but will do all the other things if it is related to pooja.

@jaya that is why I used temple specifically. Because temple is a place everyone who has faith in Lord should be able to come. There should not be any restrictions. Other things as you rightly said beliefs matter. There are many rituals only suhagans do. But some are changed now. Earlier the kids even for marriage never used to take blessings from their widow mothers, grand mothers etc as they were not allowed to come. But for my marriage I gave that betel leef and arcanut piece to both my grand mothers and took their blessings even though both were widows. They didn't perform rituals that needs to be performed, but taking blessings was allowed. But yes my grand mother didn't do the grihapravesh of my younger aunts from the time she became widow, it was done by my mom as the eldest DIL.

Kerala Sandhya. To be specific in Trivandrum. I am a Brahmin girl with my mom belonging to Tamil Brahmin and my dad belonging to GS Brahmin 😃, married to a GS Brahmin. So you will see lot of things about me confusing as it is a mix of cultures as far as I go.
