Chapter 9
It was done. It was 5am in driveway of Raizada house as they parked up from finally getting back from the hospital. Just the two of them sat side by side in the four by four and Arnav had just made a call to buaji surprising her with the news that both of them would be getting remarried later on this morning. Khushi could hear her buajis excited tone of voice after all she had ever wanted is for Khushi to be back with her husband.
He put the phone down, it was done they would happily meet in a few hours to witness their civil remarriage. As promised he agreed to all her terms from the moment they left the hospital because he had said he would. It was still dark, a few hours before sunrise if that and both of them needed rest prior to a new day and that too one that was going to bring change Into their life's.
His eyes asked her if there was anything else that they needed. There was he watched her reach around her neck for the mangalsutra she wore in a concealed fashion. He watched her unhook It and pass it to him he would return it to her properly In the morning.
There was something very strange about what had just occurred maybe because what was simply a piece of thread held so much significance. She had entrusted him with it and that meant in her heart somewhere despite everything she did have faith in him.
"I'll use the guest room for tonight". She said before opening her side of the door to head towards the house that was fine by him.
He watched her as she made the walk back into his life.
...
She stood before the mirror taking a final look at herself, she wore red a colour that symbolised wedded bliss many would say. It was nothing special just a saari that Khushi had found amongst some of her old things stored away in Shantivaan. Hp had been the greatest help in getting to them. She didn't have much jewellery, nor make up but it wasn't about that it was about what she carried in her eyes that made her beautiful.
She was a different sort of bride than the one she had previously been. The old Khushi was tentative one with big dreams and willingness to loose herself to a new life, to a person who she could make her world. However todays Khushi stood a bride with a difference already deeply in love but with many a maturities she once did not carry.
...
She waited outside his room, he wondered why it was that she was stood outside it that way.
"You can come in" he said straightening his tie a little in front of the mirror, prep for their little ceremony.
She wouldn't and It wasn't because they weren't re-married just yet it was because she didn't want to step into a room where he had shared the bed with another woman.
"Nahin ham yaha theekh hai" she replied..
"Kyun?.. it doesn't make sense you can't see my tie from there can you??!"
Khushi closed her eyes for a moment in frustration if that's what it was going to take she would say it!. "Ham waha kadam nahin rakhenge jaha aap ne Laavanya ke saath..--- " she wouldn't say the rest because she was Khushi.
Kuch nahin kiya -! He shouted from in the room , "we didn't have sex here okay we used the guest room!!!"
Khushi had a right mind to strangle him with that stupid tie for being so outspoken. She stormed into the room to see what all the fuss was about and when she did she found herself speechless. Her husband or husband to be despite the way he sounded looked like a gentleman. In fact he was, one with rough edges that's all. He was dressed in the suit she always love on him, the blue one. He was perfect from head to toe but so was she so when she walked in with a mind full for words she could use nor did she speak or did he. He paused for a moment in front of the mirror to appreciate how beautiful she looked and did she take note of how handsome he was.
Breaking away from such a moment for a couple such as Khushi and Arnav at this time was only natural.
"Theekh hai?" he said referring to his tie and she nodded after which he complimented her as he turned around. "You look nice." But Khushi took it in her stride recalling exactly why she had to storm into this room in the first place. That outrageous comment he had made.
What Khushi thought was plain to see on her face. His candour may have been a little much but it wasn't as if Khushi did not know him well enough to know that is what he was like. As polite as he was he was as frank when required.
"We may as well have the awkward conversations now Khushi ..ya phir ham insab bate ko--"
She stopped him right there because she agreed, "Nahin...your honesty is what I respect the most about you, never stop being honest with me, yey hamari ek shart hai" (consider it one of my conditions.)
He saw an incredible strength in Khushi's eyes as she replied, a strength only a woman could hold and he admired that. He nodded in accord.
When that seemed to be an agreement Khushi was just about to turn away when he had something more to add because it was important to clear the air on this now.
"I never cheated on you during our marriage Khushi.."
He said it.- out for her to hear so ever it would cross her mind after today she knew the answer, an honest answer at that because when she looked at him it was his eyes she had to judge. Somewhere in her heart of hearts she always knew that he could be be trusted and today it was there for her to see in his eyes.
She acknowledged his words with her eyes, there wasn't much more to be said at this time, all she knew is that they still had long way to go.
"Chale?" (Shall we go).
...
As both of them headed downstairs together awaiting them was nani. In her wheelchair at the focal point in house that could not be ignored. She wasn't going to accompany them to the registrar nor the temple she was too weak for that. Arnav wished for her to rest but she did carry the most beautiful smile for them that made everything that little more special.
Nani above all was one person that understood both of them. From Khushi her insecurity, her love, her hurt to the courage that still resided in her to give relationship another chance to her grandson. Her Arnav who knew of not what he had or not what he had lost or was about to regain for that matter but all nani could see was a couple who belonged together.
"You should be resting" was the first thing Arnav said as he approached his grandmother and when getting to her wheelchair squatted a little saw he could be at level with her. She only ignored that, she wasn't going to miss this for the world. Khushi soon joined them when Nani's eyes asked for her to come closer too but it was obvious that Khushi felt a little conscious.
Because although they were off to be married nothing about this was as a grown up would want it to be. Nor was she dressed properly nor had she followed any proper custom. Khushi found herself trying to hide the discrepancies from nani one of which was the fact that she did not have bangles like bride should. She approached nani's wheelchair perched on her knees beside him. Nani after all was nani she caressed Khushi's cheek affectionately and then wanted to draw her attention to the trinket she carried in her lap. It an ornate box familiar to Khushi.
Nani took out from it Kangans which ones belonged to Khushi as daughter in law of Raizada house.
Khushi knew how much these meant to Nani, she recalled the first time round she was gifted them they were a blessing from Arnav's grandparents and they bought a tear to Khushis eyes. Helping Khushi into them Nani wished them well showering them with all the grace they deserved to have for. their new start.
...
Stood in front of the registrar as per Khushi's wishes the only persons present were her mother, her buaji and Aman, the rest of Arnavs family would not have made it on such short notice.
For Khushi although her heartbeat was a little irregular from the time she had walked into the room she kept a cautious composure throughout. On the hand ASR who felt more and more sure about his decision with every passing moment for the first time in a long time wore his heart on his sleeve.
As the registrar had begun, Arnav had looked to his side to see the same devotion he had seen in Khushi the first time they had married only when she caught him looking at her did her expression change. She whispered to him, "Aap ko apna vada yaad hai nai.. agar ham chahe.." (You do remember you promise don't you I can change my mind about this marriage---) He didn't let her finish because he well and truly knew what he had committed to and reconfirmed it for her once again.
"Agar tum chaho toh kabhi bhi is shaadi se mukar sakti ho aur tumari har shart hame mansoor hamesha - I remember.." (You are free to change you marriage about this relationship at any time and you call the shots.)
This was her way of guarding her heart why not when he had broken it once already he thought as he stole a glance at her wondering how he was going to convince her that his intentions in this moment were from his heart a contrast only he could make to their previous marriage.
...
It was an intimate affair, the signing of commitment on paper after which the exchange of rings, Arnav put Khushi's mangalsutra around her neck and marked her hair line in sindhoor. All of this was deemed complete when they stopped by the temple on their way back to Raizada house.
When they returned to Raizada house there was nothing special it was just home but that was what made it perfect it was their home. For Khushi it felt a whole lot better this way then it had done a few days ago where Shantivaan was her place of work then anything else. Some things were always better a certain way and this was one of them.
After being up all night at the hospital and a fairly early and significant start to the day although they had only reached mid afternoon if that both Arnav and Khushi were felt tiresome as they entered the house.
The first thing Arnav did as they entered the house was call for Hari Prakash. Failing to get a response he decided not to waste his breath and head to the kitchen himself
to fix up a coffee rather than wait around for Hp who didn't ever seem to be on point for him anyway.
All of ASR's nature well anticipated by Khushi of course she suggests that he let her.
Looking to his side he wonders for a moment, it was okay he could go about his way it was just that he had an head ache that was all.
Had he already forgotten that he had just married her she thought..
"Hame kar ne dijyey.." (let me)
..."Pati hai aap hamare.." (you're my husband.) It felt strange to say those words out loud as it did to hear them. She had him there he thought and caved, he would check his emails whilst she did that.
...
A couple of minutes later as he walked into the kitchen to see how far along his coffee was he caught her talking to herself.
"Pagal mat ban khushi, aur pyar nahi karegi tu..
"Don't be silly Khushi Don't fall in more love, don't fall in love, don't fall in love"
The voice in her head wasn't the voice in her head he could hear the slow whispering too. She didn't realize when went walked around her picked up his coffee.
"Don't do to good a job of convincing yourself will you abhi abhi tum ne toh kaha pati hoon mein tumara."("You just said I'm your husband after all.")
He always had a way with words but she ignored it as best as possible and told him that she was going upstairs to rest for a little while which he took into account his eyes responding.
...
Whilst Arnav took his coffee into the lounge put it down on the glass surface in front of him, dropped his head back for a moment and closed his eyes to rest for a moment seeing Khushi before his eyes was a pleasant picture to have for a man who had just made a life changing decision. To know his heart and mind both complied by it was a wonderful feeling.
Meanwhile Khushi who had just retreated upstairs to once was their bedroom and was now so theirs again she prayed that the relationship she had so dearly reinvested in wouldn't let her down.
Next chapter
Re entering Raizada house as Mrs Raizada was like reliving her past only with a little bit of twist. She was the twist but only for Arnav mind you for the rest Khushi was still Khushi.
At the breakfast table they were the next morning when Hariprakash had casually asked upon the cuisine for this mornings breakfast.
Was it be continental or Indian, Khushi's response was both. " kya pata aap ke sahab ka mann kab badal jayey". (Both you never know when he'll change his mind.)
Did she just throw him an insult? he thought as he walked past heading off for his morning run and yet sweet as pie she seemed when she wished him good morning!
Khushi took a big step by marring him after all what she experienced in her first marriage
Good job
