"Lets go get u school shoes and soccer shoes" he said softly

"Buying me things is not going to make me happy" Nihar waved his fork

Neel bit his tongue

He was busted,"

Its a difficult transition for Nihaar yet again . Walk on coals for all of them together and not just Nihaar. If Biological parenting is no cakewalk, then step parenting is walk on coals.
Parenting is instinctive , while it's thankless at times, there's a given ease and somehow the children loyalty and devotion is a given . But what happens when unforeseen circumstances throw you under the bus.?!!!! The single parent feels a sense of responsibility more then for the kid.

But does that catch the Biological parent in a guilt trap?!!When they find another friend who makes them smile, the one who is not anyone else's, the one who doesn't have to live in any other home, could come live with them and make them a blended family again .

Nihar doesn't need Neel to be a 'disney' parent winning him with things. What is needed here then?!!!
Empathy and authenticity in due time may be!!

Our Indian cultural sensibilities finds it sacrilegious to put ourselves before our kids where the 'me', 'my time' and
'My feelings ' take second precedence to validating the kids needs first. And that's the guilt trap.

It's like us putting the kid in our bed to sleep not being able to see the kid cry vs the other culture parenting of putting the kid in a crib with the cameras on to check but remaining unmoved because they need their 'me time' to be a good parent ...even after seeing the kid wail himself or herself for 2 hrs to sleep after crying for the parent's attention. Personally I would hv never been able to do that. But doesn't mean , it's wrong when I find few parents doing that when they want to teach independence that way.

I have often wondered if letting an infant/ toddler wail is child abuse or the cops calling in the child welfare because they found your kid living amidst a sink laden with dirty dishes offensive to the kids upbringing in a conducive environment as child abuse. The perspective is a little cultural too while the jury is out on that.

Anyways it's a little off from the current predicament because Neel and suvi have a tween who's feelings need to be validated but without compromising to validate their own feelings too.

It's walk in coals time indeed!!

May be suvi can create a story board for Nihar to reach Nihar the way that makes sense to him as to why the parents are feeling to need to blend the families While Neel devises his own method of reassuring his love for Neel. If only it was that simple!!!

Just imagine a future scenario when the biological parent's instinct is to jump side with his or her own biological kid against the step kid...

The possibilities to how you bring in all these has my stomach churning already in anxiety Nisha.
It makes me as anxious as Nihaar

Tyaag karane (give you up)

"Ghar ki chinta nahi karo aap, bus jao, get married and bring her back" Preet folded dry laundry she had just pulled off of Neel's terrace

Neel cringed Nihar paused and looked up, his playstation portable beeping incessantly

Neel signaled Preet

"He will be a good boy. I have known him for 5 years" Preet said

"NO u have not" Nihar bristled

Preet laughed

"Yaha aa mere shona" she cooed

Nihar got up reluctantly

She hugged him tight.

"its going to be OK" she whispered

She made Nihar emotional, the kid realized, the warm feeling he got in her hug, the way she wore her deisgner clothes
The way she was always well groomed

Her generosity all made Nihar sentimental

"I am going to come to your house a lot" he muttered

"Kya kaha inhoney?" Neel enquired

"He says he is going to miss me while he is in Mumbai" Preet twisted that line

Nihar exhaled realxing
Preet was signaling Neel "I will tell u later"
Neel nodded sadly

"Inke cousins to milne ke liye utawli hain" Neel gushed

"I can see them at Diwali" (I DONT have to go to Mumbai now. You DONT have to get married now) his tone reflected

"Aabha Mausi aapki pasand ki cheezen banayengi" Neel coaxed

Nihar stiffened

"Do I have to give up my room?" he asked suddenly

"No... you dont have to give up ANYTHING" neel said proudly

"You" Nihar muttered as the sound got muffled in Preet bosom

He extricated himself awkwardly "Can I go play at ur house?" he asked Preet

"Do u have to ask shona?" she kissed his forehead

He picked up his portable and headed out

Neel sat down and leaned on the back rest

"Ghar ki chinta mat karo. I will have everything ready when u return on 15th?" she asked

Neel nodded

"Neel" Preet called

Neel didnt respond

"I am rushing no?" he asked

Preet didnt know what to say

"Umm... U love her and she loves you. There is no rushing" Preet swallowed a lil awkwardly

"He is so jumpy and nervous" Neel muttered

"Haan uske ghar mein koi aur rehne aa rahi hai bhai," Preet said cheerfully

"U can be honest with me Preet" Neel begged

"Neel now everything has been finalized. Amma milkar chale gaye. Mamiji. They all have talked to her.
Kal July 10th Monday hai school khul raha hai, you were saying you needed post it flags for Nihar's school supplies,
go to the sector 40 market or Centerstage Mall" Preet sat folding laundry

"Gags bhi okay hain?" Neel asked "Hamari shaadi se?"

"Shaadi aap kar rahe hain, Gags ne jab shaadi kara unko khud hosh nahi tha" Preet giggled

Neel smiled fondly

He wished he was talking about his shaadi too... NOT his SECOND shaadi.
He never desired for second of anything...
He wanted things to be the way they were

He wanted to only have one set of memories, one set of things, one set of emotions
One set of in laws

Sigh!

He still only had one set of in laws
Sadly...

Suvechha was an orphan in many ways

He didnt eat any meat he didnt know how to cook it
He didnt know how to deal with her cravings for it

"I havent spoken about wanting the house to be vegetarian," Neel paused he struggled to tell Preet... "Matlab jab taq Nihar nahi samajhte" "ummm" "I mean"

"I am sure Suvi will understand" Preet looked troubled

She was feeding off of Neel's worry

"Preet" Neel began again

"Neel quit worrying. Aap chahen to main baat karoon Suvi se?" she offered

He hated tasking her with such a critical lifestyle choice
"Yeh to galat hoga" he whispered

"There is only so much you can worry about Neel. Food, Nihar, your choices. the decision" Preet paused midway of folding his tee
Neel exhaled audibly

"School mahina jaayega, he will be so preoccupied, usko khabar nahi honi hai baat ki" Preet contemplated

"Unko yahin aapke yahan chhod jaayen hum?" Neel asked suddenly

"Aisa kaise karenge? Amma ne bahut miss karna hai usko" Preet chuckled

Neel nodded, agreeing

"He will be happy to see her when he wakes up every morning. He will be happy to see Aadhya, ghar par shor hoyega tey" Preet reminisced

"Aap ko vishwas hai?" Neel asked earnestly

"Barobar hai" Preet giggled trying to cheer him up, as she responded like Suvi wud

" He never desired for second of anything...
He wanted things to be the way they were
He wanted to only have one set of memories, one set of things, one set of emotions
One set of in laws"

Huh!!! No!! It's tough to imagine desiring a second of anything of this kind!!
A Second of moong dal halwa, A second of Tres leches, A second of chocolate Truffle, A second of caramel pudding , A second of thattai, mullu murukku, a second of musk melon ice cream... sure...Anytime...Damn the calories... my foot!!!!

But not a second as in a life partner, not a second as in memories, not a second as in adjustment..., not a second as in warring emotions and pull... Huh!! Never ideal...Kind of almost wierd... but hey !! Not Everything makes sense !!! The world we live in today, every damn possible family structure exists. There are only all kinds of families.

And Really How many people truly find Love twice that makes them feel as if they belong !! Now That is a blessing in disguise for Neel.

The good thing here is though Neel is seeking reassurance from not only his family but also his good friends preet and Gags, checking with them if it's not too soon ... a kind of validation he wants for his feelings, no one is going overboard sugar coating things only painting a pretty picture though they are happy for Neel. This will only help to keep things in perspective.

In same length, Neel must take care to not sugar coat stuff for Nihaar or wrap him in a cotton wool. Even For Nihaar,a second of this kind, he would never desire. Yes, Dad isn't just getting remarried ... he's also getting a new kid ... yes it's a struggle sharing Dad's love, yes it's a struggle sharing the home , sharing games...wishing Why him!!...if only things were the same for him too . Nihaar is a kid, he no doubt needs time , love and support, but the sooner Neel goes about redefining 'new normals ' them as a new family, at the same time showing that love doesn't have to divisive, the better clarity it will be both the kids, Nihaar and Aadhya . Neel is marrying suvi for himself first and not just for Nihaar . He owes Suvi that .

It is more difficult for nihar then neel
I know neel has doute of his dicision but I think his willingness will help him in future
He has to be rigid bout his decision as he has a lot to take care after marriage
We should not forget that it would be as much difficult for suvi also and for adhya.. now she will have a sibling at home to look up to and be compared also
All and all it will take a lot from these four to make a (happy) family

Quicksand & Survival

He was leaving sooner than her since in their "odd" alliance all the arrangements were being made by the groom's family

The first week of school was somewhat calm and normal considering everything else. Nihar absolutely loved his teacher, the one that taught during early summer was a fill in
But at home he was antsy and fidgety and just not able to relax. He quit making eye contact with Neel and the lady that cooked

He grabbed his cap, his cricket bat, or his charger or his PS remote and fled when he saw Neel walk in the door

Neel was sometimes left with an out stretched arm.
Aunty tried not to notice, quickly taking Neel's laptop case and offering him chai

He ate at Preet's and many nights insisted Preet bring him back so he wouldnt have to chat with his Dad and he could quickly run to bed

He gave up reading at night and shut out the light

There was no argument or anger or back and forth yelling between father and son over turning off the lights every night

The house was bathed in eerie silence by 9:30

Neel even hesitantly attempted to knock on his door to see if they could talk, but found the 11 year old snoring

He would tidy the kitchen, put everything away pack all of Nihar's school snacks in a cool case stick it in the frig, check email shut out the light, increase the cooling in Nihar's room and shut the door back up again

He would walk out the long corridor adorned with pictures on both walls, one in a wavy pattern the other in a stair step fashion
Just like Nupur had back in Worli

He felt a distinct churn in his belly, as he pondered how he was going to get them down, or if he should leave everything as is for now

What if Aadhya asked why her mother's pictures were not on the wall?

Everything that belonged to Nupur was still all around the house

Bhuvan and Ragini had broken down many times, feeling the things with their hands.

For them this wedding was too soon

He knew so it was for Nihar

He was empty on the inside
He wanted Suvechha to fill it up

He was not great about analyzing emotions or assigning causes, he was sure she made him feel breathless and ecstatic, he didnt delve much deeper

She was simple and uncomplicated, not have a large family or too much politics helped him a lot

He realized he was being selfish and uncaring

But if he began to worry about Suvechha's family or his FIL too much he knew he would have to rethink the whole thing

"How can anything so good be wrong?" he justified to himself

He wore his flip flops bolted the door and walked over next door

Gags was watching the 10 PM CNN IBN news, he jumped out of the couch to open the door, muting the TV

It was 45C and muggy outside, Delhi it looked like, no longer cooled down at night

"Preeet" he yelled

"Bache uth jaayenge" Neel stopped him

Gags was no longer wearing his pag, the ball like knot on the top of his head shiny and healthy

"Chal bhai, ek ek ho jaaye" he said

Gags wore muslin chudidar and kurta at home, expensive hand tailored ones... his gold kara gleaming against his sun burned wrist

"Beer pee lenge" neel said
"Bass..." Neel admonished

Preet came down in sweats and a tee

"Neel tussi kado aaye?" she asked

"Ghanta hoya, kithe reh gayi?" he asked

"Gags... I am doing my nightly routine" she chuckled

Her face had a beautiful sparkle, flush in some expensive night cream
Her hair tied in a high inverted Sikh braid

"Brownie ice cream milegi jaan?" Gags begged

"Haan jee, nokar ja chukey hain, tusi aape le aoo" she sat by neel

"Hore jee dulhe raja" she smiled

Neel smiled uncomfortably

Gags returned with a towel slung over his shoulder a pencil behind his hear a smal note pad and a tray bearing the treats

"Sir aapke liye aur kya laayen?" he asked politely, jotting in the tiny spiral notebook

"Shame on u" Preet mocked

"Abey yaar" Gags laughed sitting down

Preet gave Gags a look

Gags nodded

"Dono baat karo, Gags aaj lauten hain trip se, mujhe kal bachon ko school chhodna hai, main chali soney, haan agar Suvi rehti to baith jaati" she chuckled and gave Neel a hug

"Sona nahi" Gags warned as Preet hugged him

She smacked him, blushing

"I swear" he hissed letting his groomed pasted down beard rub her cheek

Neel watched in awe

"Hum bhi chalenge" he said

"Yaar ruk" Gags urged

Neel leaned back

Gags poured out two Scotch on the rocks

"I have to think about Nupur if I try to make Nihar feel better, but if I do that I feel I am betraying Suvechha" he said agonized

Gags sipped, grunted and leaned back

"To kar na baat" Gags said

"Nihar to humse baat karne ko raazi nahi" Neel accused tearing up

Actually preet had already alerted Gags so he knew of it

"Time de boss" he said softly

"Kitna aur? Do hafte mein hum niklenge Mumbai" Neel said afraid

"Kabhi na kabhi to karega" Gags promised

"Hum kya karen?" Neel asked

He was not a weak man, he had helped his Amma navigate life after Bauji. He had self navigated life after Nupur

Now the batteries were dead

"Jao pelle vyah karo" Gags said boldly

"ummm" Neel swallowed

"Take the unresolved baggage with you yaar, ek baar shaadi ho chuki sab set ho jaana hai" Gags said

"Agar uske baad bhi Nihar yoon bhaagte rahe to?" Neel asked

"Ab kis kis baat ki grantee doon tujhe? Dekh kal di khabr kisi nu nahi hai" he said lowering his gaze unable to see Neel

Neel had been through tremendous tragedies, caused by vagaries of unpredictability

He was preaching to the choir basically

"Jab Nupur gayi, tu yoon hi dara?" he asked

Neel began to cry...

Gags got up and walke dover and sat by him

"Nahi na?"

Neel leaned back

"Nihar was OK, u came here, Preet aur bachon ne sambhal liya usko? right?" Gags patted him "U are a fighter boss!!
U fought your way out of quicksand" U are a survivor" he patted him and squeezed his shoulder warmly "Tu tey boss sher haiga" Neel secretly fought tears

Neel grunted and sipped a latge mouthful. Relaxing a bit...

"Dont appear unsure, dont appear afraid dude" Gags said calmly

Neel looked at him

"Na to woh Suvi ke saath sahi hoga na Nihar ke" Gags said
