Giving space to wife is very relative and depends on each family and their situation. If I remember right , I don't think II had the space to stay peacefully at her home during Thalai Deepavali where dude had a swollen face entire time except the holy bath time or when she wanted to stay back at DII for the full thirteen days ... . As long as she's not in DII everything is ok for the dude. I don't look at that as space.
It's my POV and I stick to that.

Bala behaved like a swine in sending II alone in the night . Keeps poking dude ... , was very weak in wanting vandu to go to work, was very selfish in letting dude talk and have the finances flowing
But not everything he does has a motive . And the way he scolds shravu , flipping out is very common .
Vandu and II's bond is such that neither dude nor Bala can take the control they would like to have.

Talking of space , Ranjan bhalla and no one else in this story showers the space both wanted and unwanted to all. His support of harish , not taking a stance is the same as Bala not taking a stance with his brother.
