Am I In Love? (Part A)

Life at Royal Academy was tough... but still very boring. From classes and studying to lights out by 10, to getting up early every morning pray, and no talking in the canteen. It had all just become as normal as brushing their teeth to the boys of Royal Academy.

Dorm Room

Dhruv is lying on his bed, trying to read a book. And when I say trying, I really mean trying. It's hard to read with Varun's constant humming. And when he's not humming, he's whistling. And when he's not whistling or humming, he's singing.

Varun stops humming when he steps on something. It was a photo.

"Sweet" he says. This causes Dhruv to look up from his book, and look at Varun. His eyes go wide when he realizes what Varun was holding.

"Varun, yeh meri photo hein!" shouts Dhruv, jumping out of bed. "Voh toh dikh raha hai. Par tere saath yeh ladki kaun hai?" asks Varun, making sure that Dhruv can't get the photo. "Give it back yaar!" yells Dhruv, as he tries to take his photo back. "Dhruv has a girlfriend, Dhruv has a girlfriend!" says Varun, in a sing-songy voice, running around the room with Dhruv running after him.

But the moment they hear footsteps, they freeze, look at each other, and jump into their beds.

The door opens, and the two boys breathe a sigh of relief when they see Rey.

"Oh thank god it's only you" says Varun, getting out of bed. "Now come here! I have something to show you." Rey walks over to Varun, and raises his eyebrows at a blushing Dhruv when he sees the photo. "Laila Majnu, Romeo Juliet!" exclaims Varun dramatically. Rey chuckles and asks Dhruv "Tum aur?"

"Alya" says Dhruv, with a slightly dreamy look on his face. Rey and Varun look at each other and say "Alya." "Haan, Alya" says Dhruv, still in his dreamland. The he notices the look on his friends' faces and says "We're just friends!" as he snatches the photo from Varun.

"Right" says Rey, "So enlighten us Mr. Dhruv Vedant. What's this "just friend" of yours like?" Dhruv groans as he knows that he's not going to be able to get out of this one.

"We were best-friends, me and Alya. Practically since child birth! We were neighbors, and were always together. Like two peas in a pod" he begins, going into flashback mode. "That was until uncle was transferred due to his job. They moved away. This photo was taken at her birthday/going away party. She left the next day, and I never saw her again."

"Do you know where she might be now?" asks Varun, now extremely curious about his roommate's story. "I remember her saying where she and her dad were moving. It was this town. There's a good chance that she might still be here" says Dhruv. "That's great!" exclaims Varun, "That means you might get to see her again."

"I don't know about that" says Dhruv, finally cracking a smile "It's all up to destiny."

Rey puts his hand on his friend and says "You really love her, don't you?" "What? No way! We've seen each other in diapers for crying out loud" says Dhruv, surprised as to why his friend would even think about suggesting such a thing.

"Are you freaking kidding me?!" demands Varun, "You love her. Except you're clueless, and in denial." "Hey!" says Dhruv.

But before his friends could irritate him further, the warning bell rings, and Rey and Varun head to their beds, while Dhruv thanks his lucky stars for lights out, and Shashank Gupta's punctuality.

Next Day

Varun's running across the field to get to one of his outdoor classes, while demanding god why Shashank Gupta always has to make them get up so early in the morning.

But he stops when he sees someone in a cloak on school property. He runs towards the person while yelling "Hey you, what are you doing here?" The person looks at him, and starts to run away but doesn't get far as Varun grabs him/her by the cloak, causing it to fall off. He then grabs the person the wrist, and sees that it's a girl. As the girl struggles to break free, Varun stares at her, feeling something he's never felt before. Sure he's had crushes, and a few relationships here and there, but he'd never felt this strange feeling before. He doesn't even notice the girl glaring at him, or feel her sharp nail digging into his skin. Oh hell, hundreds of super models could fall from a flying saucer and he still wouldn't notice.

But the voice of multiple girls screaming is what breaks his trance. Both he and the mysterious girl turn and look at the screaming girls.

"Oh, so she's from Elite Academy. Our neighboring school for girls" thinks Varun, still not letting go of her wrist. Or paying any attention to the pee-in-your-pants glares, and the fact that she might be drawing blood from him.

"Sanjana!" yells one of the girls, "Hurry up, Ms. Breganza's coming!"

The girl, Sanjana, groans in frustration and kicks Varun in the shin, causing him to let go of her wrist, and hold his shin in pain. Sanjana turns around while running, and sticks her tongue out at him like a little kid, then continues running. Varun just chuckles as he runs to his class and says "Sanjana. Nah! Sanju."

Market Place

Dhruv and a couple of other guys are picking up some things for the Academy, then he remembers that they've forgotten something, so he gives them everything in his hand, and tells them to head back.

He's walking around, but stops when he hears a familiar female voice.

"Bhaiya, yeh chudiya kitne ki hein?" he hears the voice ask the vendor. "Dedh rupees" he hears the vendor respond. He turns around and sees the girl who the voice belongs to.

"It can't be" he thinks.

"Dedh rupees huh?" he hears the voice demand, "Main sab kuch jaanti hoom! Meri friend aayi thi pichle hafte, aur aapne usse dhai rupees mein bechi thi chudiyan. Main bhi aapko sirf dhai rupees hi dene vaali hoom. Na ek paisa kum, na ek paisa zyada."

"Yup, definitely her. No one else can be that dumb!" thinks Dhruv, chuckling.

He walks towards her until he is beside her. He sneakily looks at her face and thinks "Yup, it's Alya!"

The sound of Alya arguing with the vendor brings him out of his trance. "Yeh ziddi dumbo kabhi nehi sudharne vaali" thinks Dhruv.

Alya turns towards Dhruv and says "Please hold this" as she hands him her groceries. Dhruv shakes his head and thinks "Only Alya can ask a random stranger to hold her things."

"O bhaisaheb! Aaj pack karna ka irada hai kya?" demands and irritated Alya. "Arre madam, main kaise aap ko samjhaoon?" asks the frustrated vendor. Dhruv just sighs and says "Vaise, dedh rupees dhai rupees se kum hai."

Alya looks at Dhruv, and then turns back to the vendor and asks "Kya dedh rupees sachme dhai rupees se kum hota hai?" "Haan" says the vendor, thanking whoever gave birth to the boy who just solved all his problems.

"Toh, dedh rupees kitna hota?" asks Alya, feeling extremely embarrassed. "One and a half rupees" answers a chuckling Dhruv. Alya hands the vendor the money, takes her bangles, then her groceries from Dhruv, then quickly starts to walk away while Dhruv tries not to burst out laughing. But suddenly, Alya stops and looks at Dhruv again, as Dhruv quickly turns away and asks the vedor "Bhaiya, zaara yeh chudiya dikhana?"

Alya walks back to the shop and looks at Dhruv. "Dhruv?" she asks, a smile forming upon her face, "Dhruv Vedant?" "Alya" says Dhruv, turning towards his best-friend. Alya screams and drops her groceries, while Dhruv covers his years. "I can't believe you're here!" she exclaims, as she squeezes the life out of her best-friend. "Not so tight" squeaks Dhruv. Alya bites her tongue and releases him.

After Dhruv is able to breathe again, Alya asks him "What are you doing here?" "Me?" asks Dhruv, "I'm a student at Royal Academy." He takes a bow, while Alya crosses her arms over her chest and says "Not bad Mr. Dhruv."

Then she realizes something and punches Dhruv on the shoulder. "Ow!" Dhruv screams in pain, "Yeh kya tha?!" "You idiot!" she yells, "Tum itne dino se yahan ho, aur tumne mujhe bataya tak nehi?!" "You dumbo!" says Dhruv as he hits Alya on the back of her head, "I don't have you number, or your address." "Whatever" says Alya, "I don't want to hear your lame excuses."

Dhruv smirks, irritating Alya. The she notices something in his pocket, and takes out. "Yeh kya hai?" she asks. Dhruv's eyes go wide when he realizes what she's holding, so he snatches his photo back from her. "Just a list" he stammers. "Oh" says Alya, "Did you find everything?" Dhruv looks at the photo, then back at Alya. "Yeah, I found everything." he says.

"Okay!" says Alya, as she picks up her groceries "Now come with me! I'm going to take you home. Dad will be so happy to see you again!" She drags him along with her while he protests.

Train Station (nighttime)

Rey looks at his watch, irritated as to when the next train will arrive. He paces back and forth, until he sees a girl on standing on the hill across from the station. Rey looks at her curiously, as to why she's standing alone on a hill all dressed up so late at night.

"Khan baba" he says to an old man, "Voh ladki kaun hai?" Khan baba looks at the girl and says "Voh Taani bitiya hai" as he continues on with his work.

Rey unknowingly smiles as he whispers "Taani."

The train comes, and the wind causes Taani's dupatta to fly off. Rey looks at her as if it's the first time that he's seen a girl in his entire life. He's in a trance.

Suddenly, the train blocks Rey's view of Taani, causing him to break out of his trance.

A man gets off the train and shouts "Royal Academy?" Rey looks at the man, then runs towards him. "Ji sir" he says, as he takes the man's suitcase.

As the man walks ahead, Rey stops to see if Taani is still there, now that the train is gone, and is upset when he finds that no one is there. He looks back one more time before following his professor.

Terrace

Our heroes were sitting on the terrace, clearly in deep thought about today's events, until Varun says "Itna sannata kyun hai bhai?" as the other two boys punch him on the shoulder. "Ow" he yelps in pain, "But on a serious note, tell me what I should do guys. I've never felt like this before." "I don't know if this is love or not" begins Dhruv, "But even if there is a slight chance that it is, I don't want to risk my friendship."

"Or your future" says Rey. Noticing his friends' confusion, Rey explains "Falling in love is against the rules here at Royal Academy. And I'm telling you guys right now, take it seriously!" "He can't expel us for falling in love" says Dhruv. "Oh yes he can!" says Rey, "He's done it before, and he'll do it again if he has to." "what are you talking about?" asks Varun.

Rey takes a deep breath and says "It's a very famous story here at Royal Academy. A few years ago, there was a student here. People said that he was a genius, that he would surely be successful in life. But he ruined it all by breaking a rule."

"What rule?" asks Varun.

"He fell in love" says Rey, "Mr. Gupta expelled him, without even meeting him once. and as you guys know, if you get expelled from Royal Academy, then your future is ruined. No one know where he is, or even how he is. "

"What happened to the girl he loved?" asks Dhruv.

"She committed suicide" says Rey, "And the saddest part of this story, is the fact that that girl was none other than Nikkita Gupta, Mr. Gupta's only child."

Varun and Dhruv stare at each other in shock, but then in confusion as to why this incident hadn't changed their dean at all.

"Everyone thought that this incident might change him, but it just made him even more heartless" says Rey, answering the unasked question.

"Think about this" he adds, as he walks away to the dorm room.

After Rey leaves, Dhruv looks at his photo, and says "Like I said, I don't want to risk my friendship. And now, I don't want to risk my future either" while walking away.

Varun looks at the cloak in his hands and says "Looks like you're just going to have to wait for me Ms. Sanju." He hides the cloak under a bench, and whispers to himself "Or at least until someone comes to save us from this place, and Mr. Shashank Gupta."
