Rewind...
Riddhima opened her eyes only to shut it close due to the bright light surrounding her. Opening her eyes again, squinting it, she tried adjusting to the light. Gradually she opened her eyes completely. She looked around and found herself in an oddly familiar room. It wasn't her room, but she recognized the room nonetheless. She noticed the green and blue curtains hung across the window and it struck her. She was in Sanjeevni! In one of the wards of the hospital.
"What am I doing here?" she muttered. Supporting her weight with her hands, she tried getting up. She had hardly lifted the body from the bed when someone came in.
"Stay down lady!!" came a hurried voice. Didn't that sound like HIM? No confusion, it's HIM. Talking to herself, she turned around to see him approaching her. She was completely confused on what was happening and had no idea how she had reached the hospital bed and WHY in the first place!!
"Dr. Mallik, yeh mein.. " he didn't let her complete it. He just made her lie down.
"Next ek hafte tak tum bed se nahi utrogi aur haan. Bethne ki kasht bhi nahi uthana. Theek hai?" he said, sitting on a stool by her bed. She was much more confused now! What's happening here?
"But Dr. Mallik, mein yaha aayi kaise aur kyun? I mean.." she trailed off. His face grew dark and his posture seemed stiffened. Was he getting angry? she thought.
"Kaun si circus company ke liye auditions dene gayi thi jo apna halaat aise bana rakhi hai? Tum khud ek doctor ho Riddhima. Agar doctors hi aisa kiya toh patients ko kaun samjhaye ga? Ab jawaab do mujhe! Hospital ki terrace se chalang mari kya, jo aise haddi tod kar aayi ho? Aur itna bhi.." Riddhima was unable to understand anything that he was saying, but she knew one thing! She had to stop him else he would go on ranting for eternity!
"Dr. Mallik! Aap.. aap zara thande dimaag se mujhe explain karenge ki kya hua hai?" On hearing her voice, he calmed down and started speaking.
"Riddhima, there's a crack in your ribs and you need to rest completely. You can't even think of moving out of this bed for the next week and after that you may walk around a bit but no work!"
What the hell was going on? Crack in the ribs!? Dear god! She disbelievingly moved her hand on her body only to feel it bandaged securely. She tried recalling what had happened, but she remembered nothing except for her falling unconscious the other day. If she had fallen unconscious in her room, then who had brought her here? She thought to ask him and so opened her mouth, but he didn't let her speak. He motioned her to be silent and moved out of the room letting her all by herself.
***
Walking out of the ward he called out for a nurse and instructed her to take care of Riddhima. He knew patients were never left unattended, but his heart wouldn't calm down until he kept Riddhima in safer hands! He had to make sure that she wouldn't leave the bed. It was important for him to do so!
"Finally! Finally, for the time being I can let my mind loose I guess! When I was trying to find something that would tame her, she brought it on for herself! Mera kaam asaan kar diya!" On reaching his cabin, he shut the door behind him and dialed up a number.
"Hello, sir. Haan. Kaam ho gaya. Nahi. Mujhe kuch karna hi nahi pada. Woh khud gadbad karli aur meine bas fayda uthaya. Haan sir. Okay" and he was done updating his boss with the good news of Riddhima bound to the bed. He leaned back on his leather chair and closed his eyes, feeling at peace with himself and his life.

Muskaan was attending a patient when she was called. Leaving her work behind, she walked to the nurse station, where she had been asked. There was a call for her and the caller refused to tell anything about him. Muskaan suspiciously took hold of the receiver and started speaking.
"Hello. Dr. Muskaan Chadda bol rahi hun" she waited to get an answer from the other side and as she expected there came a deep thick voice. She knew it was him! Abhimanyu Modi!
"Muskaan, mein Lonavala pahunch chuka hun! Socha, tujhe inform kardun!" She heard him smirking on the other side and she knew some trouble was waiting her around the corner!
"Aur haan. Meine already apna kaam bhi shuru karli hai. Toh ab tum chaho toh wapis apne ghar ja sakti ho. You see, now I replace you and I can definitely handle Rahul and Riddhima both at a time." His smirks grew with each passing seconds and she was compelled to cut the call. But she wanted him to continue. Sometimes, if he is too happy, he'll let things slip out of his mouth. Thus, she waited for any such slips to occur. "I'm already half done with my task! You were assigned two tasks and failed to accomplish even a single one! Meine ek task ate hi nipta li. Toh batao Muskaan Chadda. Tum kabhi mujh se compete kar paogi?Tum kabhi bhi.." he went on boosting his work but Muskaan wasn't even listening to him. Her mind was working in overdrive, trying to understand what work he has already completed. He couldn't have done anything to Rahul because he wasn't here. That left only.. S***! He has done something to Riddhima. Oh my god.. this can't be happening! Not giving a damn to what this guy was rambling she cut the call and rushed to Gynaecology block. She was very tensed. She needed to confirm her doubts immediately. She couldn't wait for Abhimanyu to complete what he was saying. She halted in front of a room and pushed the door open. Peeking in she found no one in there. She looked at the table, which was clean and seemed untouched. This cleared all her doubts. Immediately she knew that Modi had done something to Riddhima. Her fears had no bound! She didn't know what to do. The main reason for her fear was she didn't know what he had done. The second reason was Rahul's absence. This problem would've been very easy to solve if he was here. First of all, this wouldn't have been a problem at all! Thinking about what to do and what not, she directly went to the nurse station to enquire about Riddhima.
"Excuse me. Have you seen Dr. Riddhima Gupta? She's not in her cabin. Any idea of where she is right now?" she asked.
"Dr. Gupta? Ji, woh toh aaj kaam pe nahi aayi. She's been admitted here. She has a broken rib!" said the receptionist.
"What!? A broken rib!?" Muskaan exclaimed. Then quickly recovering from the shock, she asked the receptionist again. "Kaun se ward me hai?"
***
"Rahul, yaha. Yahan rakho. Haan. Ab wahan uss room me jao. Wahan par baithe hai sab. Training ke next session shuru hone wala hai" said one of the instructors, who had been grinding Rahul the whole day.
He had asked Rahul to take responsibility of bringing in the instruments those were supposed to be used in the training. Somehow, the instructors had figured out that Rahul had the strength to lift the heavy machines and had taken him in for the committee of managing the machineries! "Mein kya Kung Fu Panda ka Gorilla hun jo yeh kaam karwa rahe hai mujh se!? Kung Fu Panda ka Panda bhi itna heavy nahi hoga and I'm sure that Gorilla didn't put in all of its energy to lift Poh!!" He hadn't stopped cursing these instructors from the moment he had been taken into this committee!
Cursing his bad luck he walked into a room full of ward boys. He sat beside a guy, who had become good friends with him. "Aa gaya! Ho gaya weight lifting?" he joked.
"Abbey chup baith saale. Tujhe kya pata mera problem! Waise Pintu, aaj kaun le raha hai session?" Rahul asked him, adjusting his shirt.
"Pata nahin. Koi naya aaya hai" he said.
"Abbey naya nahin nayi.. Woh dekh.." a fellow ward boy pointed to a lady, dressed in tight jeans and tees. "Wohi hai jo aaj ka class lene wali hai"
"Yeh? Theek se pata hai ki nahi tujhe? Yeh le rahi hai?" Pintu said looking at the new instructor. Before anybody else could say anything about the matter, the new instructor had entered the room.
"Hi everyone. I'm Anjali Shah, new instructor here. Aaj ki session mein le rahi hun. So, let's start the session?" She said all these things with one breath as if she was in a hurry to finish off the session at once!
"Itni kya jaldi hai yaar isse? Theek se apne baare me kaha bhi nahin!" Rahul whispered to Pintu.
"Arrey chhod na yaar.. Jitna jaldi khatam hoga hamare liye utna hi acha hai" he whispered back.
"Woh toh hai!" Rahul couldn't agree more. He was really getting tired of all these training. "I'll completely turn into a ward boy when this training completes" he muttered to himself.
"Haan? Kuch kaha tumne?" Pintu asked.
"Nahi, kuch nahi" Rahul said in a haste.
"So aaj mein aap logon ko .." Anjali went on explaining the working Anesthesia Machine. All of them were newly appointed ward boys and it was necessary for them to know the working of all the basic equipment and machines used in the hospital. Anjali was well versed with the working of the machine and thus she effortlessly explained everything about it. The authority in her sharp voice kept everyone from talking or daydreaming. Somehow every ward boy present in there was attentive to her explanation.
Within two hours, they had finished with the day's session! Wishing them all a nice day, Anjali was out of the room, almost running! Rahul had been very attentive in the whole of session, not in listening but in observing! He had noticed Anjali glancing at her watch every now and then. He had also noticed how her gaze wavered from the audience to the outside ongoings. May be she was in a hurry. But basically being an officer, Rahul couldn't help but put on his detective shoes! "Something's surely fishy!" he muttered following her outside. Pintu came running behind him and stopped him in his tracks.
"Abbey kaha jaa raha hai? Chal.. humein wahan bulaya gaya hai" Pintu started dragging him along.
"Ruk. Tu jaa. Mujhe thoda kaam hai. Abhi aata hun." Rahul turned to see where Anjali was going.
"Jo bhi kaam ho baad me kar lena. Ab chal." he seemed adamant on taking him along!
"Abbey yaar. Bola na kaam hai. Tu chal na yaar." Rahul started walking away, when he was stopped again! God this guy! he thought.
"Kya kaam hai? Zara hume bhi toh batao" he said wiggling his eyebrows naughtily. He was hinting at Anjali and Rahul caught the hidden meaning instantly!
"Yaar.. tu bhi na.. Mujhe urgently jana hai. Raha nahi jaa raha. Itna explanation kaafi hai? ya ab bhi tujhe samajh nahi aaya ki mein kis kaam ke baat kar raha hun?" Rahul looked at Pintu with pitiful expression, pleading to let go of him!
"Ho! Sorry.. Urgent hai.. Woh mujhe laga..hmm.. Tu chal.. Jaldi aa.. Mein chalta hun" Pintu left the place, somewhat embarrassed!
"Ab yeh kaha gayi?" moving in the direction where he had last seen Anjali. Stopping at the end of the corridor, he looked to both his sides, searching for Anjali. Finally he spotted her entering a room on his left side and he rushed in that direction. On reaching the room, he opened the door slightly and stole a glance of the insides. He saw her approaching some guy, sitting in a chair reading a magazine. Anjali stood behind the guy and closed his eyes from the behind. The guy instantly pulled her to face him and hugged her tightly. Rahul was embarrassed for stalking a girl who was hurrying to meet her boy friend. It made him feel cheap in some way. Cursing and regretting his moves, he walked along the corridor, back to where he had last conversed with Pintu. On his way he thought to check if the machines were placed in proper place, in the store room. Walking inside the room he pressed a switch to light the room. He found it not working.
"Subah tak toh theek tha. Bas teen chaar ghanton me kya hua iss switch ko? Aur yeh room! Daytime may bhi andhera hota hai yahan." Taking out his mobile, he put the flash on and started checking if everything was in its right place. He started checking from a corner. He kept correcting the positions of the microscopes which were placed lazily. Moving on to the last row, in the end of the room, he was puzzled to find ETG machines placed on the floor, moved in random directions.
"Dhung se ek kaam nahi karenge yeh log. Inn jaise log agar army training pe aaye na toh poora din punishment me hi guzar jayegi inki!"
Keeping his mobile on a rack beside him, he started moving the machines to their respective place. When he was about to move the last machine to its place he stumbled and fell down, hitting the hard floor. Getting up he massaged his elbow where he had hurt himself while falling. Moving the machine away to a side, he bent down to touch the floor to see what it was. He touched the tiles and felt it rough. He moved his hands a bit right side to feel it raised a bit from the other tiles and it was also not of the same type. After a few seconds, he knew that what he was touching wasn't a tile at all. It felt like cement. Rough and it had pits in between. The finishing was not done methodically and this cement floor raised a bit from other tiles was the one that made him fall. Taking his mobile from the rack, he examined the floor, lighting it with the flash. He didn't understand why there was no tile placed in this place and why was the cement finishing was raised from the floor. He closely examined the other tiles, hitting them lightly in places. One tile near the raised cement floor gave out a different sound. It also shook when he hit it.
"Just a hit and it's shaking! Kuch toh gadbad hai"
He tried putting his fingers between the tile and the cement, but he failed. He knew he could insert his fingers easily if he lifted the tile. But he could do very little while holding the source of light in one hand and trying to do something with another. Standing up from his place, he thought of first correcting the switches, so that he would have some proper light. Walking out of the store room, latching it behind him, he went in search of a servant, who would find an electrician to fix it.

Muskaan rushed to the ward where she was told that Riddhima was resting. She couldn't believe Modi had injured her to this extent! She was tensed, she couldn't wait to see Riddhima and thus she broke into a run, while simultaneously trying to connect with Rahul. She knew she couldn't probably connect to him at this time. Nonetheless she was trying. She reached the ward. Before entering the ward, she sent a silent prayer to the 'Uper Wala'. With shaking hands she pushed the door open. Stepping inside she saw Riddhima asleep. Closing the door behind, she walked to the bed. Riddhima was sleeping peacefully. Muskaan examined the chart kept in the table. She felt a bit relieved that Riddhima hadn't actually broken her ribs, but she just had a crack.
"Uss stupid nurse ki toh mein... Pata nahin kitne bhagwaanon se meine dua mangi... " she muttered to herself. But she realized she was not actually muttering when she saw Riddhima opening her eyes.
"Aap? Naye doctor?" Riddhima asked meekly. She tried to get up, when Muskaan stopped her.
"Lete raho, Riddhima!" Muskaan held Riddhima's arm, stopping her.
"Ji?" Riddhima was puzzled.
"Ah.. woh sorry.. Dr. Riddhima.. " Muskaan said correcting herself.
"It's okay. Mujhe aap Riddhima bula sakti hai." Riddhima said smiling at Muskaan. "Toh aap yahan kya kar rahi hai? Mujh se kuch kaam tha?" Riddhima asked, not understanding a new doctor's presence.
Uh oh! What am I here for? What am I gonna say now. Baaba ji.. "Ji.. Woh mein.. Haan. Woh mujhe ek case me aap ki help chahiye thi. Jab poocha aap ke baare me toh nurse ne kaha ki aap yahan hai. I'm sorry for disturbing you. Mein chalti hun. Aap rest kijiye." Muskaan started walking out of the ward.
"Excuse me!" Riddhima called out to Muskaan. She didn't even know her name.
"Ji?" Muskaan turned around.
"Aap mujhe disturb nahi kar rahi hai. Waise bhi I'm feeling bored. Aap case file le aaiye. Mein dekh leti hun." Riddhima said.
"Ah..Woh.. It's okay Dr. Riddhima. It's not urgent. Aap rest kijiye" Muskaan wanted to get out of this place then and there!
"Theek hai. Par aapka naam toh batadijiye." Riddhima said.
"Huh? Naam? Oh.. Sorry.. Apna naam bolna hi bhool gayi. I'm Muskaan. Muskaan Chadda." Muskaan gave an apologetic smile.
"Dr. Muskaan. Aap bhi gynaecologist hai?" Riddhima wanted to know more about this new doctor.
"Ji. Haan." Muskaan said with a smile. "Toh mein chalti hun. Take care" and she hurried out of the ward.
***
Riddhima kept looking at her retreating figure. Muskaan Chadda. It sounded familiar. She was sure she had heard of this name, not generally but from someone close to her. But she surely didn't remember who had taken this name while on a talk with her. Realizing that she wouldn't be able to remember when she had heard this name, she dropped the topic. She had much more important things to analyse!
"How the hell did I come here? Mere room se mujhe yaha kaun laya tha? Why is he treating me? He's a cardiologist for god's sake!?"
Her mind was full of questions. Armaan hadn't entered her ward after the morning conversation. She was annoyed with the nurse who kept irritating her by forcing her to drink milk time by time. Not able to tolerate the torture, she had burst out at the poor nurse. Riddhima had thought the nurse would never again come to her to make her drink milk. But she was shocked when she showed up after half an hour, now with a glass of fruit juice. Though she was boiling from inside, she controlled herself and directly asked the nurse about what was going on. The answer she received had shocked her even more! Armaan!? Armaan had instructed the nurse?
"First of all why is he treating me? Secondly, why the hell did he instruct the nurse to take special care of me?"
"Aarghh... Mera dimaag pak raha hai. Koi toh batao yaar mujhe! Ho kya raha hai yaha pe??" Riddhima gritted with frustration!
***
Armaan had taken a half day off from the work. He wanted to have a good sleep today. He was happy that for now he had sorted out the problems and thus he was feeling very relaxed. He was feeling sleepy too. In this tension of keeping the two troublesome at bay, he had lost the sleep of many nights and today he was going to sleep like a goat! He reached his room. Removing his shirt he threw it on a chair. Walking towards the window he opened it fully to let the breeze in. It was raining heavily and he wanted to hear the sound of it. He had always enjoyed the monsoon in his early days until he got pulled into this work.
Today he wanted to enjoy the rain like he used to. Though he couldn't go out and play basketball as he used to, he could surely take in the feeling of moist air. The icy wind flew in as soon as he opened the window, carrying the water droplets along, wetting him. Feeling all fresh, he sat on the window ledge, ditching the idea of tight sleep. He no more wanted to sleep. The rain reminded him of his favorite place. He had spent five years of his life studying in that place. Washington. School of medicine at the university of Washington. He remembered those beautiful days of his life. He re-winded his memory to cherish his first day at the medical school. His mind took him in a tour of all the beautiful moments of his college life. The rain essentially reminded him of her. His first and last ever love! He had first seen her playing basketball in the rain. He was amazed to find a GIRL playing basketball like a pro! That Sunday morning was a magical one. He was immersed in her thoughts for the whole day. The way her wet hair stuck to her face, her perfect moves, that jump to make a basket, he loved it all. These memories of her kept flashing like he is seeing them live. Watching her playing in rain had felt like a pleasant dream. The very next day he saw her again in the college. She was junior to him by three years. He was in his fourth year when she had freshly joined in. The whole college was buzzing about her. Not because of some awesome deeds of her, but because of her dressing style. She had stepped into the college premises wearing a churidar! He was mesmerized all over again. There were many people who criticized her for her dressing style. But she had shut them all up once and for all by showing them she could wear something hot too! On a college party, which was held to celebrate the victory the college football team had brought in. Hearts of all boys present in the party had gone haywire by seeing her clad in a strapless short dress. On that day, many had lost their hearts and there were even those few who had regained their hearts!, from other bimbos whom they had just dumped!
Similarly, Armaan had lost his heart too! Sitting on a couch placed in a relatively dark corner of the room, he had enjoyed watching her every move, gently turning down all the requests from girls around him. He didn't dare to go and ask her for a dance, because he had seen her rejecting all of those boys who had asked her. He didn't want to face the rejection. All through the party his admiring eyes had followed everywhere she had moved. When she was out of his sight he had searched whole of the place for her. Finally he walked out thinking that she had left the party. He was walking back when someone from behind had pulled him into the party again. Nancy. This stupid girl would never let me live in peace! he had thought. Somehow escaping from her tight hold, he had walked out again. From where he stood, he saw someone leaning on his car's bonnet, looking up at the sky. On observing closely he came to know that it was her! He started walking towards her but stopped in mid tracks. He saw her involved in deep thoughts and so thought of not disturbing her. Taking support of a large tree he stood there, admiring her like he did all through the party. After, god knows how long, he saw her calling someone. He waited there to see if she had called someone to take her back home. Deep inside he also wanted to confirm if she had a boyfriend. There were only two reasons he could think of for her rejecting all the boys at the party. No. Three reasons, he corrected himself in mind. First reason: She already had a boyfriend. Second reason: She wasn't interested in dancing with boys! Third and the most irritating reason he had thought of was: She was already married!!
Armaan laughed at his crazy thinking capabilities and he laughed out loud. He missed those days dearly. "Kaisa hota tha mein! Those carefree days and endless masti with friends..."
Thinking of friends he remembered how Atul, one of his best friends, had come out of the party, running, probably trying to escape from those people who were chasing him for his incredibly awesome deeds!
"Pheww.. Bach gaya! Hey, Armaan!Mere bhai, yahan kya kar raha.. Oh I see" he said after noticing where his friend was gazing. "Armaan, mere bhai, sambhal apne dil ko!" he had said, looking naughtily at Armaan.
"Too bad champ! Nahin ho sakta" Armaan had replied, instantly.
"Aur woh kyun?" Armaan had known that Atul was expecting him to give some witty retort to his question. But he wasn't in a mood to give one!
"Kyunki mere paas dil hai hi nahin"
"Huh?" Atul definitely hadn't expected that.
"Mere dil toh woh le gayi. Ab bas uska dil ka intezaar hai"
Armaan couldn't help but laugh out loud at how childish he had sounded that day! He also couldn't stop laughing remembering how Atul had looked at him, giving him a disbelieving look. Walking towards the cupboard, he opened it. Reaching out his hands to the uppermost rack, he pulled out a cardboard box. Placing it on the table, he sat there pulling a chair. Opening the cardboard box, he pulled out all of his old books and a few novels. Spreading them out on table he scanned through them. Finally he found it!
"Ah! Here it is" he said with a smile and picked up a black covered diary. Holding the book in his hands he opened the pages, read a few ones.
"It's not that diary" he started searching again. He saw another black covered diary. Opening the pages and reading the first page, he knew this was the one, he was searching for. Holding it he walked back to the window. Sitting in his earlier position, he opened the book. Turning over a few pages he stopped at a particular one. There was a sketch of his favorite basketball court, where he had seen her for the first time. He sat there all evening, rewinding his life to a time where he had felt the things in a different way!
