Two weeks later, Jeevika was in her room, putting away Mansi's clothes, deep in thought. She and Viren had gone for another ultrasound a couple of days before and the doctor had confirmed there had been significant change in the length of her cervix, increasing the possibility of her having a weakened cervix. She and Viren had already made their decision. She would have the cerclage. She absent-mindedly put a hand to her stomach; their baby would be fine. So lost in thought was she that she jolted when she heard a sharp cry from the cradle.
"Kya hua, Mannu?" she went to check on her daughter, frowning. She had just changed her diapers and fed her, so she wasn't sure why she would be uncomfortable. She picked her up, rocking her slightly in her arms and Mansi quietened. "Acha..." Jeevika smiled, "You wanted me to hold you? You don't like staying in your crib all the time, naa? Theek, hai, come, I'll give you a bath."
She made sure the water was warm before setting Mansi down in the bathtub, one hand propping her up. Taking a small, soft washcloth, she gently bathed her, talking to her as she did so, "You know, Mansi, you're going to have a little brother soon...or a little sister? And then you are going to teach him or her all the things you have learned. You're going to be a big sister, soon!" She continued talking to her daughter as she washed her, her churidaar half drenched in water.
"Jeevika!" she heard Viren call out her name.
"Haan, Virenji, I'm giving Mansi a bath!" she replied.
He walked in, happy to see them both, "Hi, baby!"
"Virenji, can you get the towel and take Mansi?" Jeevika asked him. He held the towel out as Jeevika placed Mansi in his arms and he wrapped her up, snuggling her close to him, "Did you have a nice bath, Mansi, beti?" He turned to his wife, who was wringing out her dupatta and chuckled, "Jeevika, were you giving your daughter a bath, or yourself?"
She laughed and went to change her clothes. Viren laid Mansi down in her crib and buttoned up her blue, polka-dotted outfit. "Arrey, how pretty you look, Mansi?" he lowered his voice to a conspiratorial whisper, "Don't tell your Mummy, but you look even prettier than her."
"I heard you," Jeevika approached them, amused, "Aur, of course, Mansi looks prettier than me. She is the most beautiful girl in the world, hai naa, Mannu?"
Viren stretched his arm lazily around her shoulder, "Aur, who is the most handsome boy in the world?"
Jeevika patted her stomach, "Our son, of course!"
Jeevika brushed her hair in front of the mirror at her dressing table slowly. The room was very quiet. Mansi was with Vanshika; her grandmother loved her as her own child and had demanded to keep her for the night after dinner had finished.
Viren was on his laptop, but not for work reasons as Jeevika had thought. He had been trying to discover online for himself information regarding a weakened cervix. He had hoped to himself he might find another alternative to the cerclage, but could find none. He had been relieved though, to see the prevailing number of successful cases and the stories of all the babies that had been saved from this procedure. Jeevika had been right; they had to put their faith into this. And they had to remain positive.
Jeevika was no longer paying attention to her brush strokes; it had become more of an unconscious effort than the precise combing she had started off with. She had been thinking about the baby...the baby they had lost. Wondering thoughts flashed through her mind. Would it have been a boy or a girl? What would've been its name? Would it have looked like Viren or her? And yet...if that baby had been born, then what would have become of Manvi, her first Mannu, her first and foremost child? And would Mansi have been born? She could not dwell on the past. She had a daughter now, a healthy, beautiful daughter, and another child was now on its way. That was all that mattered.
She did not realize Viren was behind her until she realized that the hair brush that had been resting, unused against her hair, was now combing through her long tresses again, though not by her hands, but by his. She smiled at his reflection in the mirror, as he brushed her hair tenderly. "You know," she told him, "I realized that whatever happens, it's for a reason. And no matter all the complications, we've still been okay in the end. So, don't worry about me, Virenji because we will be okay. And our baby will be okay"
He set the brush down on the table and unhooked her earrings from her ears, "Mein jaanti hoon, leken one question has been troubling me."
"Kya?" she asked.
"What should we name it? I like Riya, Meera, Paro..." he went on.
She shook her head, "Nahi, nahi, nahi...I like Armaan, Nikhil and Kishen."
"Theek hai, theek hai, when the baby is born then we will decide," he told her, "Otherwise if it is a girl, then now she will get offended by hearing the names you want to give her."
"And if it's a boy, then he will be very angry to hear that you want to name him Riya'!" she laughed.
"It's okay, I will buy him ice cream and he will forgive me."
Jeevika's stomach rumbled. Bringing up the topic of ice cream seemed to have awakened a craving for it...at ten in the night. "Virenji..."
"Haan?"
"Can you get me ice cream, please?" she pleaded.
He looked surprised, "Now? At this time?"
"Please, Virenji, I really want ice cream. Otherwise, I'll go and get it-"
"Nahi, you stay here, I'll go," he left the room. She couldn't understand. Why did she suddenly want to eat ice cream so badly? Oh, the pregnancy...
Viren returned with a bowl of ice cream. Jeevika took it from him and began to eat eagerly. He eyed her with a raised brow, "Be careful, don't eat too quickly."
It wasn't long before she finished the entire bowl. Viren sighed, "I had hoped you were going to share with your poor husband."
"Sorry, Virenji," she blushed, slightly embarrassed.
"I'm just teasing you, baba. You can eat how much ice cream you want, I'm not hungry," he ruffled her hair affectionately, "Come, let's go to bed."
He tucked her in as though she was a small child before joining her on the other side of the bed, switching off the lights. A short while later, she could hear the even breathing that told her he was asleep, yet she was still wide awake. And hungry.
She didn't want to disturb him so she tried getting out of bed, but he woke, "Kya hua?"
"Kuch nahi, Virenji. I'm just going to the kitchen."
"At this hour?" he rubbed his eyes wearily, "Kyun? Do you want more ice cream?"
"Nahi...now, I want some more of that chicken tikka we had for dinner," she said sheepishly.
"Jeevika, please go to sleep..."
"Don't worry, Virenji, I'll go-"
"Nahi, you stay here, I will get it."
She felt rather guilty but what could she do? This need for alternative sweet and spicy foods was all-consuming. She couldn't sleep. She had to have it. Viren soon came back, "Here, anything else?"
"Nahi, that's it, thank you, Virenji," she said sincerely.
He pulled the covers over his head and turned on his side. Jeevika ate quickly and then set the plate on the side table next to her. She wasn't hungry anymore...but, she still couldn't sleep and sat up in bed, knees curled to her chin.
The bedcovers rustled and a very sleepy-looking Viren lifted the blanket and turned to face her, "Now, what?"
"I can't sleep," she confessed.
He sighed deeply, muttering to himself, "I thought since Maa had taken Mansi for the night we would be getting a full night's rest. Little did I know, my wife would keep me awake instead."
"I'm sorry," she said ruefully, "You sleep."
He shook his head and sat up beside her, "Nahi, if you're not going to sleep, how can I sleep now?" He rubbed soothing circles across her back and she immediately relaxed; she had not realized she had been so tensed with worry over their baby. "Feel better?" he asked softly.
"Haan, Virenji, but you need to sleep..."
"Not until you sleep," he replied, still massaging her back gently. Taking one of her hands in his, he then proceeded to rub her fingers and arms and her eyes drifted closed. Placing a kiss at her shoulder, he asked again, "Feel better?"
"Mmhmm," she mumbled contently, under the sweet, gentle pressure of his hands. He smiled and unable to help himself, brushed his lips up the slender column of her neck, "Better?"
"Virenji..." she murmured.
"Haanji?"
"I think it's time we went to sleep now."
"Leken, I am not tired now," he brushed her hair slightly to one side so he could press another kiss to her cheek, next to her ear, "Aur, I promised I would stay awake with you..."
His hands caressed her cheek as he drew her closer to him, but she buried her face in his neck smiling shyly, "And now I am sleepy."
"Theek hain," he conceded, pulling her down and wrapping his arms around her, closing his eyes, "Better?"
"Haan."
After a few minutes, a muffled wail could be heard from Vanshika's room. Jeevika waited for it to die down, but it grew louder in pitch and she got up from the bed to go retrieve her daughter.
Viren sighed resignedly, "It seems we were not destined to get a full night's rest after all!"
