My friend wants her 9 year-old son to diet. He is not really overweight nor lethargic. He is active in sports and quite the dude, really :)..He is tall for his age and and may be a tad bit chubby.
I wonder what reason she actually gives him when she literally pulls out the food plate from his hands...that you need to be more...hmmm more what really? more handsome? fit? would a 9-year old understand that?

I think the peer pressure is not just among the students but comes from all around and without proper guidance, will have a lasting effect on life..

Great to see this topic being explored..

A story that needs to be told and a subject that needed light and attention. I love that your writing undertakes its responsibility so cleverly; I love how it slowly creeps under my skin quietly, almost unassumingly at first, and then rocks my assumptions in the most fundamental ways. Quiet spaces first and now this..

Rockbarbie.. You do not leave any space unscrutinized and I love it.

Ah, as a member of a certain gender and of certain age, having put my body through two very radical hormonal swings, when I say I know what these battles are about, I am not kidding. :)

It isn't just about weight is it? It is about labels.. imposed or self selected! It is about the discourse of power that underlays this play.

What can I say? I know that I will love every update and every exchange that takes place on this thread. It is like a classroom and I love the learning that happens to me when I engage. So..Thank you

Reading the prologue took me way back to my teens ...

I may have been 15-16 ... I was cutely plump not fat ... what they call "khate peete ghar ki " 😃

I was standing on the balcony of my house and 2 cool dudes of my colony passing by commented "Hey Fatso" under their breaths but loud enough for me to hear ... leaving me feeling so awful ... first I went on a food binge where I just did not want to go out at all or meet anyone ... I just sat at home and ate and ate and ate to my hearts content ! Then better sense prevailed and I started getting up at un-Godly hours for walks in case I bumped into any known people ! Sometimes five in the morning ... sometimes four thirty ... my alarm was set everyday ... earlier the better ...

At that time I thought that those were the worst days of my life ... But now when I think back I just have a good laugh at the incident ...

Those cool dudes too are still around in the colony ...

Infact one of them is my dentist ! all grown up and BALD ! 😆

But can I say "Hey Baldy " when I see him ... No ... we are grown up now and these things don't affect us anymore as there are far greater and graver things to worry about now ...

But at the tender age of 14-15-16-17 it can have a terrible affect on our minds ...

It can scar you for life ... but how does one explain it to youngsters ... 😲

love the idea of yours on attacking this topic which is much needed in this time and age where popularity of size "zero" is sending the wrong message to growing teenagers. Without realizing, youngsters are putting their health at risk not understanding the long term consequences. Being fat is ok, but being obese is not. Kids need to be talked to and educated on the differences. Hopefully your story will enlighten the minds of many on this forum and will spread a positive message.

There is a one-shot by Juhi also known as Expelliarmus, or Expel which touched this subject . I so wished that she would have elaborated on it but I understood why she couldn't. Hoping that you'll do justice on this much controversial subject.
