*FLASHBACK*
It was Aakash and Payal's Roka ceremony which had been organised in the Raizada family. It was early afternoon as the Roka had been planned in the morning and was to be followed by the engagement party which would be held in the evening. As the Guptas entered Shantivan, everyone's faces lit up with bright smiles and they welcomed the family inside warmly. The wedding had been postponed by two more weeks as Aakash was busy with his domestic business deals that couldn't be postponed and now finally, the beginning of the wedding week was marked by the Roka ceremony.
Everyone was busy in teasing Aakash and Payal, but one person's eyes were searching for someone else, a person whom she supposedly 'hated', but also the person for whom she felt emotions and feelings that she hadn't felt for anyone before. This person was the one in whose eyes she felt concern for herself, the kind she hadn't seen in anyone's eyes before. Each time she entered the office, she could feel his burning gaze on her and when she would follow her heart and look up at him, he would be staring at her from his glass cabin, till he diverted his eyes after a short eye lock that they shared. He was strict, of course he was, but she could feel him try and soften whenever she was around, after the incident when she had fainted in office. Yes, Khushi Kumari Gupta was thinking about Arnav Singh Raizada! Really? Could her thoughts hold some meaning? But where was he right now, where was her Arnavji? Yes, another new for Khushi. Her didi would address everyone as ji but she was different and she even made fun of Payal for that, then why now? And especially, why him?
All these were questions that she didn't quite have any answer to, but still where was he, the ceremony was almost ending and no one seemed to answer her questions? Her eyes frantically searched for just a glimpse of him but to no avail. Finally, Anjali noticed her anxiety and smiled, pressing her lips together, as she had noticed the chemistry between Khushi and her Chotte recently, and weddings were known to be the perfect time for matchmaking, weren't they? Also, she already loved Khushi, such a sweet girl she was, how perfect she would look as her chotte's bride and the bahu of the Raizada family! Anjali's daydream was broken as her husband came and hugged her slightly from behind, "Rani saheba, ab kya khurafaat chal rahi hai aapke mann mein?" teased Shyam. (Rani saheba, now what 'amazing' ideas is your mind having?)
Anjali's eyes widened and she pushed him aside as she clung to his arm and whispered, "Dekha apne Khushi ko? Vo aur chotte kitne acche lagenge na saath mein! Humein lagta hai humein apni dusri bhabhi bhi mil gayi Shyamji. Dekhiye kaise dhoondh rahi hai vo chotte ko", answered an excited Anjali, as her eyes twinkled brightly. (Look at Khushi! Don't you think chotte and her will make such a perfect couple? I think I've found my second sister-in-law also, Shyamji. Just look at how anxiously she's trying to find chotte.)
"Haan vo sab toh theek hai Rani saheba par saale saheb kahaan hai? Kahi vo phir se toh..." (All that is okay Rani saheba, but where is saale saheb? Has he again...)
"Ji Shyamji, aaj mumma ka birthday hai isliye vo phirse kahin chale gaye hai. Humne itne saalo mein unse kuch nahi poocha par humein dar lag raha hai Shyamji. Kahin chotte kuch..." as her eyes saddened. (Yes Shyamji, you know right that today is mumma's birthday, so like always chotte has gone somewhere. I haven't asked him in all these years but I am always scared that he will do something...)
"Rani saheba aap itni tension mat leejiye. Yeh aapke liye aur humaare hone vaale bacche ke liye accha nahi hai. Saale saheb aa jayenge aur vaise bhi Aman ko toh pataa hoga na ki voh kahaan gaye hai", he tried to comfort Anjali. (Don't worry so much Rani saheba, it isn't good for you and for our baby. He will come back soon, like always. As it is, Aman will probably know his hereabouts.)
Unknown to the couple, Khushi had heard their talks and her heart had started beating to such an extent that she felt it would jump out of her mouth any minute. Panic stricken and with watery eyes she rushed out of the house as she dialled Aman's number on her phone with trembling fingers.
...
As Khushi sat inside the auto rickshaw-she had hired an auto rickshaw because she didn't trust herself to drive in her state-she was getting impatient by the second till Aman finally picked up.
Khushi: AMAN MATHUR, TELL ME THIS INSTANT WHERE ARNAVJI IS?
She shouted with such great force that the auto driver got startled and almost lost his control on the vehicle while Aman almost dropped his phone on the other end of the line.
Aman: Khushi... (He didn't dare to call her Sanka Devi in this mood) calm down...
But he was cut short by Khushi's powerful voice.
Khushi: MATHUR, TELL ME NOW OR I'LL MAKE SURE THAT YOU ARE FIRED IN THE NEXT TWENTY FOUR HOURS.
After this sentence Aman didn't dare speak anymore for he knew what effects Khushi was having on his best friend cum boss and he could be fired without a doubt. He told her the place while Khushi instructed the same to the auto driver and hung up the phone. While Aman, then muttered something as he smiled to himself.
Aman: Lady ASR!!
...
Khushi paid the driver and hastily rushed towards the bougainvillea leaved arc which was the entrance to some kind of a garden. She was running all around the garden shouting for Arnav, when her eyes caught sight of a particularly excluded area and she moved towards it with hasty steps. Finally, her eyes spotted a masculine form standing and admiring a few rose plants placed together. His back was faced towards her and he was absolutely still. She had no doubt that this was Arnav. Khushi heaved a sigh of relief and then whispered, "Arnavji".
...
As if on instinct, Arnav turned around to find Khushi standing in front of him. Her eyes were clouded with tears and she was trembling. He looked into her eyes and could immediately tell that she was worried about something. But he himself was not in the state to understand anything. In his dark moments of grief Khushi was like a fresh ray of sunshine, of hope. It was as if she had entered that place in which he had shut himself up along with his past only to make those moments colourful and to make that place brighter with her sheer presence. In a blur mix of emotions and in the confusion of that moment, he held Khushi in his arms like he would never let go of her and pulled her into his chest. She hugged him back as he crashed her more into his chest, his hot breath falling just above her earlobe as he breathed heavily. And then, Khushi felt her Kurta wet, wet with his tears, wet with her Arnavji's tears. Her own tears rolled down her cheeks as he clung onto him and she comforted him with her presence itself. Khushi didn't speak anything for she knew that it was his time to speak and vent out his emotions. Quietly she led him to a bench near them and kept her hand over his, giving him a go ahead to speak.
...
"Khushi..."
He looked into her eyes as his voice choked. Her eyes were still clouded, but she smiled through her tears, and he understood that she wanted him to speak.
"My mom committed suicide when I was hardly 14..."
Silence.
"It was di's wedding. Everyone was so happy Khushi. It was as if everything in our life was turning out to be perfect. We were a perfect family, or so I thought. My mother was the most beautiful woman, at least for me. She was my mumma, I was proud of her. She was my best friend, the best mother and the best wife, but looks like it wasn't enough for the man who I called my father. Di was so happy, dressed as a bride; she was looking just like mumma. But then I saw mumma running towards her room. Her bangles were broken, she was crying bitterly, not caring about anything. I rushed behind her and she started talking to that man. She told him that she knew that he was cheating on her and that she had seen that woman with him. She was shouting, Khushi...howling like anything and then she picked up that gun...and...And she shot herself.
"That man followed her, maybe because he couldn't face himself and they both died together. Di and I became orphans in just two minutes and her marriage was called off too. We were thrown out of our own home and that's when nani took us in. The person you know today, ASR, is because of all this. ASR is heartless; he has lost the capability to love anyone. A feeling of vengeance filled me then and that's why I destroyed my chacha, who threw us out of our own house. I haven't been able to search for that woman Khushi, otherwise I would have destroyed her too... I am here today only for my mumma. If it weren't for her, I wouldn't be so interested in gardening. Mumma used to bring me here each time on her birthday."
His eyes were bloodshot and angry tears were rolling down his cheeks. He had told her everything that there was to know about him and just as he was to talk about how he had and would destroy all the people linked to his past, she stopped him with her words.
"I love you Arnavji."
Arnav looked up at her eyes, there were no more tears and he could clearly see that she was speaking the truth. Yes, she wasn't lying. This was an honest and pure confession that she made. He knew that he too had feelings for her but could they be called 'love'? Did this feeling even exist in his dictionary now? Was his heart capable of loving someone? Here he was telling her that he could not love and she told him that she loved him? He opened his mouth to speak but words didn't seem to come out and he was cut in by Khushi.
"If you think that I have said this to you because I sympathise with you then you are wrong. I understand what you feel like Arnavji. Losing your parents is not easy. How I can say this? Because I know what it feels like. I am an orphan too, my parents died in a road accident when I was six. Amma and bauji took me and didi in after that. We are not their biological daughters; everyone in your family knows that too.
"I will not force you to reciprocate my feelings and I know how difficult it is for you to confess your feelings. But I want you to know one thing, you are not ASR, you are Arnav, deep inside, because I see how soft you are with your Di and Nani. You love them, Arnavji. Love is not something that one feels only for someone he wants to share a romantic relationship with. One can love their parents, their friends, their pets too...absolutely anyone. And the fact that you care for your family that you can love too, as Arnav or as ASR proves that you have a heart too. As ASR because you love to work when you're in office, in that angry young man mode and you love me too because you have been trying to become Arnav in office lately, just Arnav", she smiled cheekily as she finished, while he was left gaping at her, dumbstruck.
Arnav was surprised at her latest confession. She was an orphan? Who could tell? But he couldn't just tell her that he loved her, it was such a strong word with such a strong meaning attached to it. Would he be able to reciprocate those feelings? He could see in her eyes that she was cent percent sure of her feelings, yes, she had the same determination in her eyes as she had when she would be hell bent on cracking a project. He could see her being a perfect 'Mrs. ASR'. Unknowingly, a smile crept up his lips as he continued to stare at her.
Just then, her last words struck him, 'and you love me too because you have been trying to become Arnav in office lately, just Arnav'. What the..? So, she had been noticing him as he noticed her? Was this just attraction or was this really love? He snapped out of his thoughts and took her into a hug as his lips curved in a hearty smile. "I am sorry Khushi, I am not sure of this, I need some time, but I do feel something for you each time I see you. Maybe that's the reason you know things about me that no one does, today."
This was enough for her, at least for now. She knew that he found it difficult to express his feelings easily and she comforted him as she hugged him even tighter, "I know, I understand you, you don't need to worry. Take all the time you need."
They stayed like that for a few minutes till she realised that they had to attend the engagement and that everyone would be worried. Immediately, she pulled out and told his the reason as she noticed his confused face. They started walking out, towards the car as Arnav realised something, "Khushi, how did you know that I was here?" he asked.
"I blackmailed Aman", she smiled an extra sweet smile as she sat inside the car, leaving him shocked and then smirking, behind as he made a mental note to tease Aman.
They, no Khushi, had finally confessed her feelings for Arnav and this marked the beginning of their story, of Arnav and Khushi's story, as the two drove off.
*FLASHBACK ENDS*
Arnav had just walked out of the Gupta house after witnessing his Khushi suffering from a panic attack. He had tears in his eyes as he remembered all his happy moments with her. After she had fainted, he had carried her to the room and had then spoken to Garima and Shashi, who had been shocked to see him there. They listened carefully and understood how much he loved their foster daughter. Finally, he convinced them to help him win her back and cure her off the Post Traumatic Stress Disorder that she had been going through, as a child and now, after their incomplete wedding. He had walked out as he didn't want his Khushi to suffer anymore because of him. He would now fill her life with love and happiness as she had once filled his life and this would start from the next day itself.
Arnav pulled out his phone from his pocket and dialled a number, "Hello Aman! Fix a meeting with Singhania Designs tomorrow and make sure your Sanka Devi attends", he hung up the phone as he started the engine and then drove off from there.
