Scribble scrabble its an angsty drabble ..IDK why I was obsessed with it being exactly 300 words! Like/Love/Hate/Comment.
The Dolls
The sun glinted off a piece of glass on the doll's dress momentarily blinding him, reminding him of light glinting off her nose pin. He squinted, trying to remember where they had picked up the doll. Rajasthan he thought, before the kids had come. He remembered her laughing, giving him childish reasons as she rejected other dolls before picking up this pair, supposedly because it looked like them.
Unwittingly his mind summoned visions of bright colors, tinkling bangles and wide smiles. He remembered his distaste for them in the distant past. Ah! The folly of youth to not understand the transience of life!
All he hoped for now was to never forget that radiant smile, hazel eyes that caressed not just his form but his soul. Eyes that had always been wise beyond their age.
Her Devi Maiyya could have been merciful and relieved the earth of him! Merciful to both him and the earth he thought ruefully. Instead it had been she who had won that bet, of who would meet their mammas first, who would be waiting for the other, in another dimension. She had left him bobbling like a buoy, tethered loosely to the family they had created but yearning to be taken across the ocean to the shores where he was sure she would be waiting.
His aging body still had a few more years; it was the faltering soul that was left bereft in a world that contained only memories. Memories were good for temporary separations he mused, when reunions were assured.
Well a reunion was coming soon he felt. He knew in his bones that his wait wouldn't be long, to see the smiling eyes and hear her incessant chatter and revel in the soothing comfort that only she could forever provide.
