Chapter 3
With no one else around the house Khushi had only so called Hariprakash' for company. Watching him work in the garden she thought of making conversation if not then tea was the least she could help with. Common courtesy and care was apart of Khushi and that was obvious in her behaviour and maybe that's why ASR seemed to not mind her presence.
As he looked up from the gardening he saw her smiling down at him with a tray carrying two cups of tea.
Rising from his squat ASR discarded his gloves, as he looked over the garden he had just about salvaged, real hp was definitely going to get his share of scolding that was sure. . He looked at it like an artist looked at finished art work, critically. Khushi on the other hand who sat on the porch side of the garden began mixing condiments into her tea couldn't help but notice how this Hp seemed quite a personality the way he carried himself the way he took a seat on the other side of that tray and pick up his cup of tea rather masterfully maybe she was thinking too much of it.
"Aaap aur kya kaam karte hai..?" to break the silence because for it was getting a little odd sitting quietly ("So what else do you do around the house?")
Never having had to answer anything from another persons point of view this way his words seemed to be a little unsure to begin with. "Erm ... I look after the house, fix things.."
Khushi talked about a hell of a lot o things, she just went on and on, she liked to talk was ASR's first observation and he responded to some of the questions when she gave him the chance. Most of it was just him listening and her talking until the very end when this next question seemed to come after some thought. "Atcha aap se ek baat phuche.. aap ke saab kaise hai..?" "huh?" was the initial response it wasn't quite clear what she was asking him at first, it was maybe the words she had used but after a moment or two seemed he understand what she was asking him. "Ohh.."
"Is that so you can make a quick exit if needs be.." he was joking of course but
Khushi looked confused at his comment, her English was self taught and very basic.
"Nothing", amused at the way his joke had fallen flat ASR smiled a little maybe at the situation he had got himself into. Thinking about how to respond for a second ASR turned to Khushi who was a exquisite picture of intrigue "I guess He's alright, what exactly is it you want to know?" watching her get a little uncomfortable on the matter she was quick to change the topic.. Kuch nahin bas aise hein.. er
atcha aap.. cheeze theekh karte hai naa..? ("No nothing..er you fix things right?" )
ASR got the feeling that there was purpose behind her question.
...
He was right there was intent to her question and it looked like a bomb had gone off in the kitchen or maybe that's just what It looked like when girls cooked?
After finding his set of DIY tools ASR walked into the kitchen with Khushi to look at the mixer she had accidentally some how broken but he was stunned by everything that was going on in the kitchen.
Pots pans, batter, flour, oil everything. Finding a little space for himself near the mixer ASR began to take the mechanics of the machine and open up parts of it with aid of a screwdriver when Khushi who was standing beside him watching asked. "theekh ho jayeyga ..??" (is it fixable..)
ASR noticed how intently Khushi was watching him she probably didn't want to be the one who had already broken something in the house in her first day and he kind of understand why that was.
He looked up from the machine with a smile trying to change the subject a little because her watching him that way whilst he tried to figure this out wasn't good for either of them. What looked like sweets in the making around him was a good topic of conversation he thought.
We don't usually have sweets around the house I'm.. " about to talk in the first person ASR quickly changes the words but gets a even bigger expression of disapproval when he uses his first name so casually .. forgetting that he was meant to be Hp after all. "I mean Arnav -- Saab diabetic hai."
Just about making up for the slip up in time ASR breathes a sigh of relief.
Khushi thought for a moment apart of her a little sorry to hear her better half was suffering from an illness that too one which was so anti- sugar the one thing she loved more than anything. Seeing the bright side however was one of Khushi's best assets and the cheer on her face as she thought of the solution was very expressive and proud. "Koi baat nahin.. ham sugar free bhi banasakte hai halvayi ki beti joh hai..." (no problem at all I can make sugar free ones I'm a confectioners daughter after all. )
Khushi started to make a new batch of sweets this time without sugar as she went on to cook ASR continued to work on fixing the mixer. Impressed by Khushis sense of determination, seen as she had mentioned her father ASR thought of asking about her family.
"So are your parents okay about you here on your own then?" it was just a casual question as he continued to focus on his task at hand.
"Hamare amma babuji nahin rahe .. aur ab buaji bhi nahin" (my mum dad and bua are no longer alive.) He didn't know, she passed a weak smile as he looked her way his eyes astounded yet compassionate he could see how fresh the pain was in those eyes of hers even if she tried to hide it. ASR got the feeling that he hadn't even touched the surface of how serious this was, how real this was for Khushi. The moment proved to be an eye opener for ASR as to how integral his role was in this girls life.
...
It was probably better to give her some space he thought he fixed the appliance and left the kitchen there were things he had to do apart from think things through on the current situation.
Whilst Khushi was preoccupied in the kitchen ASR checked his emails, caught up with Aman in regards to the more cooperate side of things after which he just sat with his thoughts for a second. He felt strangely connected to Khushi yes there was some kind of pre Initiated relationship between them he never really gave regard to before now but having met Khushi it was clear that she may not have not had the freedom to do the same. ASR got the feeling Khushi was brought up with the idea of him being apart of her life. In an day and age where people were free to choose their own life partner Khushi may not have had a choice and yet here she was in his house having been through hell with a smile on her face. He couldn't even begin to try and understand what she would have gone through or what her feelings for him were but he was certainly going to try because a part of him was becoming increasingly inclined to her.
Spending too much time away from the scene was going to create doubt in Khushi's mind so ASR headed downstairs only to see real Hp heading his way. Quickly shooing him away before Khushi who was approaching noticed he smiled as Khushi stopped before him, she was apparently looking for him. "Aap hamare saath market challenge please?" (do you think you could accompany me to the market)
- "Sure"
...
Off they went with a bag each, Khushi had empted quite a lot of the kitchen supplies out not only that but she also owed a man for the extra pani puris she had indulged in on her last visit.
Khushi as ever talked and having spent quite a lot of time in his company now she didn't mind him making conversation either. ASR followed Khushi around the market as she visited various stalls, he watched her get excited over little things such as the ice cream seller and eventually he walked alongside her back home carrying the shopping in a very gentlemanly way.
Gradually the conversation got to a very personal. Khushi talked about how she had never met Arnav although she had many a time wondered about him. Khushi's words were very heartfelt she was truly the girl who had dreamed about her life partner since childhood. "What if you decide you don't like him..then what?" A genuine question from ASR but Khushi just smiled.
"Ham jaante hai ke woh atche hein honge ..aur aap ne bhi toh kaha . na ..kya tha woh .. .he's alright.. Satch kahe toh...hamara unke siva aur koi hai bhi toh nahin ..joh bhi hai wohi hai."
(I know he'll be a good man and what was it you said ?... he's alright. To to be honest hes all I have now, he's everything .)
She was rather adorable the way she seemed to take everything in her stride and have so much faith in people, so much faith in him. He could feel Khushi's aspirations in her voice, her hope and her loneliness all conveyed in those words of hers. Apart of him want to reach out to her now..stop and tell her that she wasn't on her own. The two of them continued to walk, having reached the front gates of Shaantivaan ASR felt Khushi suddenly.. fall into him with a stumble..catching her they both looked down onto the pebbled drive to see Khushi had broken h one of her slippers. Shrugging her feet out of the flip flop style shoeLooking up at him bitting her.. a little embarrassed she hoped he would have a genius Idea because she didn't they had quite a long way to go before they would reach the entrance of the house and pebbles weren't the best of surfaces to walk bare feet upon.
Although Khushi certainly tried..she put one foot in front of the other but her expression instantly depicted her discomfort.
There was no other choice dropping the bags he picked up Khushi's flipf lops put them into the back pocket of his trousers and then swept her off her feet .
As shocked and uncomfortable as she was he took no noticed when she asked him to put her down and walked her straight into the house.
...
A little upset that she had broken her favourite pare of sandals ASR who had noticed the upset on Khushi's face manages to glue them back together. Knocking on the door of his own room which felt strange ASR waits until he gets Khushi attention before entering. "I've fixed them .." Waving them in the air a little as he walks in he sees Khushi's face light up it was unexpected she hadn't asked him to try and put them back together.ASR walks in asking Khushi if it was okay to take a seat next to her sits down and passes her the shoes to which she thanks him. He notices the boxed piece of jewellery she seemed to be looking at before he had intruded he seemed to recognize it as his mothers mangalsutra. An heirloom his father had passed on to Khushi's family as a symbol of their alliance. "You think of him as your husband don't you..?
ASR had observed Khushi for sometime now, how she spoke about him, how she respected him and his family and how she treated everything to do with his home with so much care and attention something only a wife would do.
Khushi turned towards him and she didn't know why but she felt like she could confide in this man. She nodded a yes ... "Its beautiful .. Have you ever tried it on.?"
"Jab ham chote they ..toh..khel khel mein phena karte they magar Iski ehmiyat samaj ne ke baad kabhi nahin." (When I was younger remenber putting it on whilst playing but never after understanding what it truly stands for. )
"Shahi mein patni ham unki tab kehlayeyge jab woh khud hame woh darja de." (The truth his I'll only be his wife once he accepts me as one.)
"You worry about him not accepting you as wife don't you ?" He was the first person who had ever understood her silence..why she spent so much time with that mangalsutra in silence the truth was she did worry, she had dreamed up a world with him and devoted herself to the ideology of her husband yet what if he didn't hold the same regard for her. Khushi looked up at him and found a soft gentle warmth in his eyes that seemed to understand everything that was going on in her mind.
...
What she would do he didn't deem her fit to be his wife was the sort of thing that was on Khushi's mind and seemed to trouble her beneath her happy exterior but ASR was apt in changing the subject. Soon enough they had moved on, ASR thought of making use of this time by actually getting some DIY done he painted the corridor outside his room whilst Khushi on the other hand found herself tidying his room ..he watched from outside on the ladder as she painted, he didn't like people touching his things and it honestly be he soon relaxed seeing Khushi wasn't moving his things just cleaning and then putting them back in place .
He continued his painting keeping an eye on Khushi from time to time who had now started going through his shirts ironing them ..one by one, and then putting them back into the cupboard. She was either bored or truly a house wife at heart not only that but she seemed to be talking to herself as she ironed.
He paused for a second turning down the music on his phone to listen in and hear her trying different variations of his name? What an earth she was doing was beyond him but his confused face she happened to catch in the process.
Ham soch rahe hai ke .. hame une kya keh kar bulana chahiyey.. (I'm thinking about how I should address him. )
He gave her a strange look, who thought about things like that? A little sarcastic with his tone in a light hearted way wasn't the answer obvious.? "er how about Arnav???" Looking disgraced by his suggestion Khushi wasn't keen on the idea. "Aap ko naa yey baate samaj mein nahin ayeygi aap painting kijyey"! (its okay you (won't understand you carry on painting!) As far as Khushi was concerned he was a man he wasn't going to understand she carried on and he just looked at her even more strangely ranting under his breath "crazy woman"
First time for everything he thought - first time someone had told him to keep his opinions to himself but not for long.
Khushi had soon finished her ironing and was onto something even more significant. ASR happen to catch her in front of the mirror holding different outfits up against herself. He soon realized that he couldn't take his eyes off her..her innocence her simplicity or how beautiful she actually was when she asked him for his opinion as to which outfit she should wear on her husbands return. He had no immediate answer to which Khushi had to prompt him yet again to get his attention.
