Chapter 12

"Arnav.. Hospital" Piya stammered, as tears formed in her eyes.

Arnav shook Khushi in her arms again, but didn't get any response from her. He picked her up in his arms and ran out of her apartment, towards his car. Piya followed him, and quickly opened the door. He carefully placed Khushi on the back seat, her head in Piya's lap, himself running to the driver-seat.

He drove as fast as he could, glancing at Khushi through the rear-view mirror.

"Piya. Rub.. Rub her hands.." he spoke, panting. Khushi's face was becomes whiter with passing time, worrying both Arnav and Piya.

They reached the hospital. Arnav quickly opened the back door and took Khushi in his arms, running inside he hospital. She had become more cold, her face color all drained out.

"Doctor?"

"Lay her on the stretcher" a doctor told him and he did as told.

Rubbing her hand vigorously, he walked as the nurses pulled the stretcher.

"Khushi please. Please get up. Khushi--" his voice choked, panic displayed all over his face.

The stretcher was taken inside a room, where neither Arnav nor Piya was allowed to enter.

"ITS ALL BECAUSE OF YOU ARNAV" Piya yelled at him, holding him by his collars.

"Piya--"

"Just shut up. You yourself know why Khushi is in such a state. You know what. Khushi's biggest mistake in her life is that she fell in love with a person like you. You don't deserve to be loved Arnav. She had so many hopes when she came back to Delhi. And you. You spoiled everything. You shattered her by your cruel words. Why is she hated for something she didn't even do?

Believe me Arnav, if ANYTHING happens to Khushi na, I will make sure you are behind the bars.. and your f**king money cannot stop it" she screamed at him, anger written clearly on her face.

She pushed him with whatever strength she had, "Just go away from here. Khushi does not need you by her side."

He stepped back, lowering his eyes and wetting his lips. Glancing one last time at her, he turned back and left the hospital.

Piya stumbled back a step and fell on the hospital chair with a thud, crying. She covered her face wit her palms and continued to cry and pray for Khushi.

*

He just drove and drove, his eyes blood-red.

He didn't knew why, but he stopped his car in front of Khushi's apartment. He didn't knew why he came there, but something pulled him inside the apartment. He wanted to be there.

He walked inside Khushi's room, after closing the main door. His feet trembled with each step he took.

He closed his eyes and let out a deep sigh, while he picked up the photograph lying on the side-table.

"Kulfi kaun kaun khayega?" (Who wants to eat Kulfi?) Arnav's father came inside the Raizada mansion, seeing Arnav and Khushi playing together in the hall.

"Hum khayenge" (I will eat) Khushi raised her hand high, running towards her Kaaka.

"Main bhi khaunga" (I will also eat) Arnav did the same as Khushi.

Amit led the two children out of the mansion, towards a Kulfi-vala whom he had asked to come, while returning back from his work.

The man gave a kulfi to Khushi and then to Arnav, and smiled seeing the excitement on their faces.

"Chalo ab idhar dekho aur haske dikhao" (Now see here and laugh) Amit held a camera in front of them.

Khushi smiled widely looking towards the camera, the kulfi melting in her hand.

Arnav looked at her and then at the melting kulfi, and he snatched the kulfi from her hand, taking her's and his own, together in his mouth, making a crying expression form on her face. She opened her mouth wide to cry, and at that instant, Amit clicked a photograph.

A throaty chuckle escaped his mouth seeing his own little form with mouth stuffed with two kulfis.

'Khushi still has this photo with her' he thought, moving a hand on Khushi's face in the photo.

He got up and scanned her suitcase. He didn't knew why he was doing this, but just he wanted to. He took out a bag from it and opened it to check its content. What he saw in it, made tears to finally escape his eyes and stream down his cheeks.

Her gudiya.. his gaadi.. her frock.. his shorts.. her kangi.. his comb.. her tears.. his caresses..

He took out his gaadi and stared at it for quite a long time.

His father had gifted him a remote-control car on his 9th birthday. He was more than happy receiving it. But within a week, he lost the remote of the car and thus threw the car away. Khushi picked it up and treasured it.. She had actually treasured his carelessness..

He stared at all the contents of the bag. Every thing had a memory attached with it. But those memories had almost faded in his mind. He never cared about anything. He just had his notebook with him, in which he used to draw Khushi's eyes. Rest everything which he ever had with him, was all discarded as soon as Khushi left his life, twelve years back.

His tears grew copious as he got up from the bed and opened her cupboard. There were hardly any clothes left in it after she packed her suitcase, but on the inner side of the cupboard-door, were attached some small yellow colored post-in notes. They held Khushi's writing.. the date and a line written beside it.

'I am going to meet you today. Super excited ' - may be on the day when she joined AR.

'You're so handsome. Nazar na lage kabhi aapko'

'Why are you so khadoos to your employees Arnav?'

'I love Dadi. I wish I could live with you '

'I was so tensed when you fainted. Take care of yourself please '

'I loved your touch when we danced'

'Why do you hate me so much Arnav? You feel suffocated in my presence? Why?'

'I'm going away Arnav. Take care of yourself'

'I love you Arnav.. Much more than I love myself'

'Even if you hate me, I love you with all my heart'

A loud sob escaped his mouth and he stepped back, still gazing at the notes which described her each day in Delhi.

Tears flowed endlessly down his eyes. Khushi's crying face.. his parents' dead bodies.. everything flashed in front of his eyes. He closed his eyes, shaking his head vigorously to shove off the haunted images.

"MAAA" he screamed on top of his voice, breaking down on the floor, sobbing hard.

"Arnav?" he heard a soothing sound near his ears.

He looked up, only to find his mother standing beside him.

"Maa?" "Aap aa gayi?" he panted, trying to hold his mother.

"What are you doing mera baccha? Why are you destroying your own life? I never taught you this. I never taught you to take revenge. And why are you punishing an innocent soul? You know that your parents' death was an accident. Why don't you accept it now? You need to let go of your past to live a happy present. Your parents were your past Arnav. And Khushi is your present. Now its your own wish whether you want to take your past or your present to your future.

You are not fighting with Khushi, you fighting with yourself baccha. And by doing this, you will never be peaceful. We are there with you at every step of your life.. we are here to guide you throughout your life, but Khushi.. when she wants to take a step forward towards you.. don't push her away.

You have used your mind to attain success. To attain happiness and peace, use your heart. Go and get Khushi back in your life.. hurry before she leaves you. Its still not too late Arnav. Go and save her. Make her yours forever.."

He heard her speak in an extremely soft voice, his pain soothing down.

"Maa--" he cried, hiding his face in his palms.

As soon as he looked up, he didn't find his mother anywhere. He got up from the floor and searched everywhere, but there was no one.

He came back to Khushi's room and stood before the mirror.

'If ANYTHING happens to Khushi' Piya's words reverberated in his ears.

'NO' he screamed, tears again forming in his eyes.

Subhadra wiped her non-stop tears with the end of her saree, and held Khushi's hand tightly before pressing the bell to the Raizada Mansion.

Arnav came running towards the door, and opened it quickly. He was way too excited of the fact that his parents were getting Khushi to live with them. He opened the door, only to find his Dadi and Khushi. Subhadra's head held a band-aid, over the injury which she got after the dreadful incident, which took away her son and daughter-in-law. Khushi's arm was fractured, but the irony held in the fact that she didn't even knew what had happened.

Behind Subhadra and Khushi, came men carrying two stretchers on their shoulders, each one holding Arnav's parents. Their corpses were covered in white sheets.

The Raizada Mansion echoed with a heart-numbing-deafening scream let out by Arnav, as he broke down seeing his parents DEAD.

'Dadi knew everything about the accident. But I never let her speak to me. I wish I could--' he thought, allowing more tears to flow.

He wiped the tears off his cheeks and eyes, and breathed deeply.

Staring at his reflection in the mirror, he spoke, "I do care for you Khushi. Mujhe faraq padhta hai. And I will not let you go away this time. I will not let anything happen to you. I will undo everything bad I did.. I will rectify all my mistakes. Just be with me Khushi'

He slid the photograph in his pocket and went out of her apartment, driving towards the hospital.
