Chapter 70
My first update in FF after a sudden bout of inspiration. Hope you guys like it.
"Aaah", Panchali screamed. She had woken up to find a mane of wild bushy hair over her face. As she recognized the face carrying the bushy hair her adrenaline started going back to normal. "Now wake up sleepy woman." the face called out. Panchali was up on her feet quickly to charge at her best friend," What were you thinking Ullu, waking me up like this?"
"Excuse me I am no Ullu, my name is Ulupi. And you better get ready. We are leaving."
"We are leaving! What for?" Panchali asked.
"Panchu dear, calm down. You know how silly Ulupi is sometimes." A soft voice spoke from behind.
Panchali turned to see a tiny but beautiful Manipuri girl standing there. Ulupi looked like she could kill Chitra for her comment. "Chitra, whats going on?" Panchali asked her other best friend.
"Well, Panchali today is friendship day so I, I mean we were thinking to have a girl's day out." Chitra replied.
"Oh! That would be great." A smile crossed Panchali's face.
Panchali turned to Ulupi again and said emphasizing each phrase, "If- you- ever- do- that-again-you know what I will do to you. You scared the hell out of me."
"OK. OK. I am sorry. Now put something on. You are not thinking of going out in your night dress, are you?"
"Let me freshen up. But I need to ask Daddy. He is so careful about me. I even have my exam tomorrow. Though I am well prepared and the paper is not one of my major subjects, should I be going?"
"As if you stick to his rules always!!! " she winked and continued"Papa's little doll, we already took uncle's permission. And we all know you are going to top the exams. So, now be quick. Get going." Ulupi said.
"Give me a minute."
Panchali was rather quick. She put on denims with a red T-shirt and khakhi coat.
Chitra said, "Don't forget your sunglasses baby. It's hot out there."
In a few minutes the girls were out in the shimmering heat. A gang of girls was waiting outside in an open jeep. "Jeep?" Panchali asked as she recognized Shubhi, Devika,Hema, Kurenu and Vijaya .
"Kurenu jumped out of the jeep as she said,"Yep! I thought it would be fancy!"
"Panchu take the seat beside Hema as she is driving. The mother-to-be needs to be comfortable", added Dr.Vijaya. .
As everyone took their seat, Hema drove off. They passed the city with buzzing roads, market filled with voices of fishermen and bargainers, noises from cpnstruction sites filling your ears. They swiftly moved out into the countryside with fresh air which seemed to relieve Panchali. Suddenly Panchali turned out to see Devika urging Subhi to do something. All the girls were urging her to take it up. Shubhi picked up a guitar and began to play on it. She started singing. Subhadra played really well. Along with Shubhi all the girls started to sing the song. Laughter broke out when Ulupi began a pole dance on the jeep holding on to the handle of a jeep. Draupadi was thoroughly enjoying the scene unfolding behind her. She was singing along and cheering at Ulupi.
Suddenly music started playing in her mind. Another kind of music. Something old, traditional and beautiful. Something that struck a chord in her heart. She was tying the hair of Queen Sudeshna while she watched Princess Uttara dancing to the beats of tabla. She was dancing perfectly. Her steps were not missing any beat. Her expressions brought out the meaning of the song. Close by, a man sat dressed in the garments of a woman. So good was his disguise, if you did not know so you would not be able to guess that the man was indeed Prince Arjuna, one of the greatest archers of his time. Tall, dark and confident, he even looked beautiful as a eunuch. Conch bangles hid the many scars left by his bow on his arms. His eyes looked beautiful smeared with kohl. His mind was fully concentrated on playing the tabla. Panchali was mesmerized by the dance and the heavenly music which she was hearing after twelve long years. She was not paying any thought to her job. She was brought back into reality when she heard a screech from Sudeshna when Panchali of the old had accidently dug a pin into Sudeshna's head. "Sairandhri, what are you doing?" "Uhh, I apologize, my lady. That won't happen again." "It better not."
Pancali of Kalyug was also brought back to reality when the jeep screeched to a stop. She looked around. The sight was beautiful.
An old structure stood before her made of white stones. Creepers hung down from the many columns that held the roof. Beautiful engravings were depicted on the cut stone. Panchali left the jeep and followed her friends and sister-in-laws. The cravings were very beautiful. The girls were looking at the canvas. But something else caught Panchali's eyes. The beautiful lake that could be viewed from there. She almost jogged to the spot where the lake started. The water was completely blue. The surface was shining like a diamond as rays of the Sun hit it. Panchali tired by the jog sat under the shade of the tree and rested her back on it trunk. She watched as a line of ants were climbing onto the bark of the tree, at a distance from her. She saw changing rooms at a far corner. She watched as Chitra, Uloopi and Hema came out of it wearing swimsuits. They dived into the water. Chitra was a gracious swimmer and had won many prizes at National level. She watched as the girls started pelting each other with water in the middle of the lake. She was mesmerized at the scenic beauty when someone disturbed her," Jiji, take some chips and biscuits. You must be hungry. Chitra jiji told me you did not have any breakfast."
"Thankyou Subhadra. Now I realize I was dying with hunger."
"Is not this place beautiful Jiji?"
"Yep! So very beautiful. So serene."
"Balram Bhaiya took me, Kanha Bhaiya and Parth here as kids. I wanted to come here again so when the idea of an outing arose I suggested this. How is your Ankhon ka kajal feeling?"
"Parth told you didn't he", Panchali smiled at Subhadra "Our son seems to be very happy here."
"He did not tell me anything. But I know it's him. It can't be anyone else." A tear dropped from Subhadra's eyes.
"Of course it is him" Panchali smiled at Subhadra gently.
