Chapter 7: The presence

Randhir was working on his laptop. His room was pitch dark. The only light visible was of his laptop. He was completely engrossed in his work when cool breeze crept upto him. There was a sound of some bells jingling making a mellifluous noise. It sounded like the ghungroo of a classical Indian dancer. He got up from the divan where he was sitting and paced towards the source of noise. He heard footsteps mixed with the jingling sound climbing the stairs making their direction upwards towards the attic. He decided to follow those footsteps. He climbed the stairs and finally reached the attic. He looked at the door. It was a huge door made of Sal wood in traditional south Indian style with intricate patterns designed on it. There was an enormous lock hanging on the latch of the door. The lock was made of pure silver and was very strong. The door and the lock looked untouched for years. There were cob webs all over the door. It was filled with dust. He raised his hand to touch the door when he heard a hissing sound from behind. He speedily turned behind and his shady black orbs were scanning the entire place. But there was no one present there. He turned back towards the door and out of the blue his gaze fell at the balcony adjacent to the attic. He went there. The balcony was facing the backyard. He was breathing the fresh air that was filled in the atmosphere. He looked at the trees planted in the backyard. There were different types of trees which included the commonly found coconut, eucalyptus, sheesham, khair, banana and even sandalwood. There were some thorny shrubs present there too. He was enjoying the enthralling beauty of nature when he found some hard structure at a far-away corner. He carefully looked at it, and found that it was some hut-like structure. He decided to go there and check out what it is. He went downstairs and reached the hall. He was about to proceed towards the main door when he collided with someone. He extended his hand towards the person and the person got up. It was Vidhushi. Randhir looked at her.

Randhir: Vidhushi... right?

Vidhushi: Yaa, but how do you know?

Randhir: Parth showed me your pics. I am Randhir by the way.

Vidhushi: Yeah. Parth told me about you.

He extended his hand and they did a handshake.

Randhir: What are you doing here so late at night

Vidhushi: Woh... main

(Parth comes from behind her with a cake in his hand)

Parth: Arrey vids tu ruk naa mere liye. (Looking at Randhir)Arrey, Randhir tum yaha kya kar rahe ho ?

Randhir: I just came for a walk. Par tum dono? (He notices the cake in Parths hand) Anyways enjoy your time.

They passed a smile and Parth and Vidhushi moved towards their respective rooms. While they were proceeding Randhir turned and carefully looked at Vidhushi's foot. But she was not wearing an anklet. "If it was not Vidhushi, then who was it. Am I hallucinating?", he thought. He ended up with the thought that he was tired and he needed to take some rest. He moved in his room and dozed off.

IN PARTH'S ROOM

Parth: Vids they are my friends. How can I do this to them?

Vids: Listen Parth, if they would have come here as your friends then it would have really not been such a big issue. But they are here with that Swamiji. And he has brought them here to sort out things happening in our house. And for that he locked up my painting room. Now this is the only way to make him unsuccessful. I don't want that Swamiji in my house. And once the matter is sorted I will myself apologize to your friends. And I know they will understand us.

Parth: But Vidhushi...

Vids: No Parth. I told you yesterday about the plan. Everything should happen according to it. (The boy and girl talking about something in previous chapter)

Parth: I will try.

Vids: Hummm... Good night.

Parth: Good night

They heard a cracking sound as if something had broken down into pieces. They rushed towards the source of sound that was Sanyukta's room. Randhir too came there. Vardhan also came there listening to the sound.

Vardhan: (To vids) What happened? What was that sound of?

Vids: I don't know Bhai. It came from my room. Sanyukta is there inside.

Till the time Sanyukta opened the door. She came outside.

Vardhan: What happened Sanyukta?

Sanyukta: Kuch nahi, Bhai.

Vids: Toh woh aawaj?

Vardhan saw that Sanyukta was hiding her left hand behind. He held her hand and brought it in front. It was bleeding as there was a huge cut.

Vids: Oh god! What is this Sanyu? Wait I will bring the first aid box.

She opened the door and saw that the window pane was broken and the lamp besides their bed had fallen on the bed and was broken into pieces.

Vardhan: What the hell is this Sanyukta? Why do you always hide stuff?

He yelled at her. Vids came out with a first aid kit.

Vids: Bhai, woh window ka glass tuta hua hai and the lamp is also broken.

Vardhan: What??? You first dress up her wound.

Listening to the commotion Ramanujan and Nandini too came up.

Nandini: What's happening here? Sanyu, why is your hand bleeding?

She said as she saw blood oozing out from Sanyukta's hand.

Parth narrated them the whole incident. Nandini decided to shift Sanyukta and Vidhushi to Raj and Shikha's room as they had left with Ananya for a tour.

After Sanyukta was sent down Randhir, Vardhan, Vidhushi and Parth were checking out the room. Vardhan didn't notice Randhir first due to the commotion so he was about to ask him something when Parth intervened and introduced both of them,

Parth: Randhir, this is Vardhan Shridhar, Vids' brother and Bhai this is Randhir my friend.

They shook their hands. Vids went near Vardhan and whispered in his ears,

Vids: (Whispering) Aur yeh ek psychiatrist hai. Dad has called him with his two other friends.

Vardhan: (In a small voice) What is dad upto?

Vids: I don't know

They were brought back to reality when Parth exclaimed.

Parth: I suppose it was a burglar

Vids: Humm...

Randhir: No it was not a burglar.

Vids: And how can you say that so confidently?

Randhir: Look there

He said pointing below at the floor near the window that was broken.

Vids: But there is nothing over there.

Randhir: That's the problem. There is "nothing" there

Vids: What do you mean? I didn't get you

Vardhan: He is right. If at all it was a burglar then he might have broken the window from outside and there would be pieces of glass over here.

Randhir: Exactly. It means someone from inside the house has done this.

Parth: But who?

Vids: Might be one of the servants.

Parth: But why will they do this?

Vids: For money.

Parth: You mean they will get money by breaking the windows. Have you lost it?

Vids: You mean I'm insane? You...

Randhir: Guys guys... chill out. We will talk about this tomorrow.

Vardhan: Get back to your rooms now

And so they departed to their rooms.

Precape: Vids: Dad, bhai... waha out - house mein aag lagi hai.
