Hello Di... Were those questions are for everyone???? Well I'm taking the opportunity to say something here...

For many, Ahalya might seem to be a weak woman... But I think she's a strong lady, as strong to be possible in her circumstances... Had it been another woman, either she had ignored to believe Greeshma, or ask her to go far away, might have give her a few money, or promised her to take care of her father... But thats max she would have offered... But Ahalya hadn't... She was strong enough to accept her husband's 'crime' as well as taking responsiblity of that... I'm proud of her... I guess she couldn't have done anything more than that...

and to answer ur second question, yeah any other employer would do only that... May be then Greeshma didn't have to face Arjun Mallik, but would she be safe there... How long that money ran... Or how long her father survived in that condition... What will she do after that... Without any relative... Without any money... Without any job... A alone teenage girl with such beauty... Could she survived... Could she possibly b safe... weren't there any more Arjun Mallik around her... I dnt think she could... Here again Ahalya did what she could do for a poor girl, with her best intention, things that turned out wrong wasn't her fault...

I wanted to run an exercise by you, my dear readers...so, I typed out questions. Then changed my mind...because I didn't want to trouble you...then I changed my mind again...confusion...confusion...confusion...

Okay...here goes.

I wanted to ask those of you who have already read and reviewed the chapter a question...Make it two...

1. What would most zamindar wives have done in Ahalya's place? (Zamindars leading the kind of life style Arjun Mallik did was fairly common in the era in question here).

2. What would have happened to Greeshma (No family, father paralysed), had Ahalya simply given her some money (say 5k INR) and left her to her fate at the clinic when she goes to visit Mr. Bhatnagar instead of following through on her decision to help the family?

Look forward to your views :)

P.S - Please don't feel obligated to answer. This is optional 😆

I think for your first question I already made a point in my previous comment, but let me be to the point here...
In place of Ahalya other wives of such Zamindars wouldn't have turned to look at the girl, rather would threw them out of the Palace as soon as they could feeling insecure of their beauty, that they may lost their importance or place in their husband's life and sooner after knowing their pregnant status.
They were used to of other women in their husband's life in the form of dancers or mistresses, so they wouldn't have questioned their husbands, though I really doubt if they had any right to question, because wives those days were mostly trophy wives.
So Ahlaya here may had her own reasons to help Greeshma, maybe her guilt or something else which will be revealed soon I guess but sure she didn't need to care for a employee's girl fighting her own family and husband, hence in my opinion Greeshma was in better condition form any other girl in her case.
To answer your second question, there are many possibilities, what would have happened to Greeshma if Ahalya wouldn't have come to her rescue..
1. Lifelong humiliation with an illegitimate child to take care, working as a maid or such similar job, which I doubt she would have gotten after her history, forget respectful jobs, because we are talking of a time 1980.
2. her resolve would have weakened in due course and she would have ended up aborting the child and dying in the process because that time abortion other than good clinic was nothing but nightmare.. and better her child would have died in her womb for lack of food and nutrition.
3.She and her child would have ended up as beggar or stray and in worst scenario, in brothel...

Yes Life is harsh and reality sucks ... but that was what would have happened to Greeshma if Ahalya wouldn't have come forward for her rescue.

Over to you Sandhya...

Its a good opportunity you have given us..your readers.
Well according to me any wife other than ahalya would have either blamed the girl entirely or helped her to disappear from that place..that era was something where you did something with good intentions and yet people took it otherwise..and thing like this would have only made greeshma a used n thrown out woman. With a illegitimate tag on a child.
And if knowing this fallacy of a husband if ahalya had just helped greeshma with money and had left her on her own would have caused trouble for greeshma. She would have had been free from the humiliation caused from people cos her husband but greeshma would have been humiliated and stripped of her dignity for bearing a child without marriage. Society blamed girls and woman for these things no one points fingers at man. Greeshma you have described is stronger so she may not had aborted that child cos of people but the mental torture is far great grievous that physical pain sometimes.
Im glad that ahalya helped her though there had to be some gain for her which im sure you will tell us.
thank you

I think most wives in that class and era would have paid Greeshma off or asked the husband to get rid of her, not get involved personally. Ahalya makes Me feel conflicted because if she is as caring and progressive ad she appears to be...how come she was either blind to what goes on in her own house that she brought Greeshma there and did not worry that she was leaving her alone there with her husband or was she turning a blind eye to what was going on in her house...

2. What would have happened to Greeshma (No family, father paralysed), had Ahalya simply given her some money (say 5k INR) and left her to her fate at the clinic when she goes to visit Mr. Bhatnagar instead of following through on her decision to help the family?

I think if Ahalya had left Greeshma with some money and left her to her fate, she would have still in some way or shape ended up losing her virtue. That was almost her fate in that day and time ...unless Greeshma chose to go to her fathers family and ask for help...which she seemed too proud to do. Not sure if she would have preserved her pride or her virtue.

Look forward to your views :)

Sandy, this was one of the most gripping and overwhleming chapters of DND. (In terms of ) content, your story telling everything was top notch!
Though we have suspected after chap 48 some link bet Arnav's father and Greeshma her actual story was wasy worse!

But as you said on pg 34 very common story in those times and maybe even today.
Whats make this different is Ahalya accepting the child.
What remains to be seen is what happened to Greeshma later? Are Greeshma and Garima one and same? Who was Greeshma's child?

Really cant wait for next update this time!

Take a bow for such a brilliant chapter!

If Arjun Malik was a despicable man, let's not hide him against the backdrop of feudal society, he was what he was. I understand you have chosen this approach to highlight the general psyche of the women in those years, but we are not talking about pre-independence era or the 1950's, we are in 1980's. I agree that subtle traces of that corrupt system / society were still prevalent, but my focus here is only on one woman who belonged to upper echelons of the society, who was educated and strong. My observation on Ahalya is simply based on what you have chosen to feed us with. I agree a lot has to be revealed, but whatever you have given us so far gives me an impression that she was a strong, confident, knowledgeable woman, definitely not submissive in nature. So why a woman like her like to remain in a marriage like that? It can not be only for societal pressures, answer could be her children, but can a man like Arjun Malik be a good father?
A woman who can think of prosthetic bellies and is bold enough to call her husband's illegitimate child her own in the city of Lucknow during 1980's...has to be one hell of a woman, it's difficult for me to digest that she could be bound by so called societal norms. I hope I am able to get my point across. Waiting to read the next chapter ...

Sandhya, I love this story, this is not just about few characters , it forces me to draw parallels to life itself. What women went through or are still going through just because few men think that they have a right to do whatever they want, brings out the feminist in me. We are still a long shot away from equality.
