He knew he was better than this, and that after all of her assurances this should be a non-issue. Rachna had given her promise that no matter the outcome of their meeting today her association with Shekhar would be over so he should have taken solace in that; but there was still something awry with this whole situation something that he couldn't quite place his finger on that made him uneasy. He watched as Rachna packed up her things to go for this lunch meeting, he absolutely refused to think of it as a date, with Shekhar, 'Dammit, did she have to look so beautiful today?' he thought. As if hearing his thoughts she looked up from what she was doing and looked over to him sending him a small smile before shyly looking away. Distracted from his thoughts, Kabir couldn't help but smile in return; so now he had his shy Rachna back did he? If nothing else, he thought, her unpredictability, would certainly keep him on his toes.
Rachna checked the charge on her mobile once more before placing it in its holder in her purse. Sighing, she thought it would be best to just get this over with it. Whatever happened, this was it, she knew the whole situation was upsetting to KT, and of the two men, her loyalties definitely lay with KT. She only hoped that she would be successful in helping Shekhar today. Regardless of the outcome, he would just have to understand that he was on his own after this. She was ready to let it all go and concentrate on her own life, on her future with KT. She looked over to his workstation, to find him staring intently back at her. She felt herself blush under the force of his look, causing memories of the intimacies they had shared recently to come flooding back. She smiled and looked away, 'God, had she actually been that bold?' she mused. It was something that she would never regret, but in the light of a new day, she could not help but wonder what he possibly thought of her now. Sighing in her confusion she was startled by his voice, directly in front of her.
"That was certainly heartfelt, is everything okay, Rachna?"
"Yes, I'm fine; did you need something, KT?"
"Just checking to see that you are all set to go." I can't lie and say that I won't be glad when this is over and done with, Rachna."
She nodded her affirmation, "KT, do you think you could come and collect me afterwards. I'm sorry, that's probably a real silly question, given how busy you are, but.."
"I'm just a phone call and fifteen minutes away; just call when you are ready, ok?
"Thik hai."
They had settled on the same cafe. Rachna arrived ahead of Shekhar and Neeta and had chosen one of the booths this time so at least there would be the modicum of privacy for this meeting. She didn't have to wait long as soon after the pair arrived. Rachna smiled, watching the couple walking towards her; whatever admiration for her KT had imagined seeing in Shekhar's face, could not compare with what she was witness to right now. Here was a portrait of a man totally smitten with the young woman beside him. So evident that she could only think that perhaps his feelings weren't reciprocated, as Rachna could not see how Neeta would not recognize that the man beside her had feelings for her. She waved in greeting to the couple to get their attention.
"Rachna, you're here already?"
"I wouldn't want to keep you waiting, especially knowing that today I would be meeting your good friend." Smiling at the young woman, Rachna greeted her, "Neeta, I am so pleased to meet you, Shekhar talks of you so much, that I insisted that I meet this paragon before our wedding. I hope we can become fast friends, especially since Shekhar holds you in such high esteem."
Neeta nodded but said nothing. She didn't need to thought Rachna, for her eyes spoke volumes. Never had Rachna seen such pain in someone's eyes; here and now was definitely not someplace that Neeta wanted to be, and it was evident she was tortured over this fact. It tormented Rachna knowing that in all probability that she would be inflicting more pain on this already vulnerable girl before this ended. She could only hope that the end result would be worth it, and that Neeta would forgive both Shekhar and her for this deception. Silently sending her message of apology to Neeta, who had slipped into the bench opposite her, Rachna dived into her role of devoted fiance.
She reached out and grabbed Shekhar's hand just as he was about to slip into the seat beside Neeta, "Silly, where are you going, you're place is right here beside me."
She kept hold on his hand when he sat beside her, and turned slightly so that she was facing him with a smile, "Neeta has had you all her life, so don't you think it's my turn now?"
In her peripheral view she saw Neeta turn her head and look over to Shekhar who himself, was dumbstruck at Rachna's actions. 'Idiot,' Rachna thought,'how exactly did he think this was going to play out?'
"So Neeta, you're my Shekhar's neighbor and one of his closest friends, therefore you know enough about him to confirm if my feelings are correct; is he truly a keeper or are there any deep dark secrets that I should know about that will make me change my mind?"
Finally Neeta looked over to face Rachna. "Nay, Rachna, he's a really great guy."
"Excellent, just what I thought, I'm happy to have this reaffirmed naturally, but I expected nothing else." Rachna looked over to Shekhar, frustrated by his lack of interaction, "Why so quiet, You , did you expect me to hear something else; your Neeta has confirmed what I already now so relax!" Taking the opportunity to look at her watch, she looked at her companions, "Should we order lunch, I will have to get back to the studio soon."
"Yes you're a designer; I've heard all about this."
Rachna looked up at Neeta, surprised at both her comment as well as the irritated undertone she heard in the statement; apparently the reserved Neeta had issue with her.
"Shekhar have you been telling tales?"
"No not Shekhar, but I've heard all the same." Neeta replied
"Really?"
Before she could explore this further, the waiter arrived to take their orders, but it wasn't long before the opportunity presented its self that made things a whole lot more interesting. The two women suddenly found themselves alone when Shekhar received an important call on his mobile which he had to take. Almost at the same time Rachna had received a message on her own mobile which on reading delighted her to no end.
"Heading your way sooner than thought, contact me when you are ready. Are we closer to forever yet?"
"You're in love aren't you?"
Without raising her head from her phone, Rachna answered "Yes, yes I am."
"And how will it feel to learn that he doesn't love you?"
Looking up from her reflections, Rachna looked across the table at Neeta, "Excuse me?"
"What is it you didn't understand, Rachna; Shekhar doesn't love you."
"What?"
"Didn't you realize that you were only chosen because of how accomplished you are; how ideal you are? If nothing else Shekhar's mother made sure that everyone knew that her future daughter-in-law was perfection itself!"
Taken aback by the sudden vitriolic attack, it took Rachna a minute to respond.
"I would think then that you would be happy for you friend then; so what is your problem?"
"Even when you get married , you will be his second choice, he'll never forget.."
Noting her reluctance to continue, Rachna went on the offensive to see what reaction she would get, "Forget who, surely not you Neeta, after all you're just his friend."
"You're wrong, you'll never understand what we have."
"Well it can't be much if he is marrying me is it. Come on Neeta tell the truth aren't you just mad that given the choice, that Shekhar didn't choose you; isn't that it?
Rachna watched as Neeta suddenly grabbed her things, "Perfect my foot; you are a vile, vile woman and you don't deserve Shekhar at all!"
"And you do? Well unless you're ready to do something about it, then I guess you better get used to me being around, Neeta, since our alliance has been fixed. We will be neighbors after all."
Lunch was just being set on the table when Shekhar returned. He noticed Neeta's empty place and looked querying at Rachna.
"I'm sorry Shekhar, she left. It will probably be better to take her lunch to go. On the other hand, I'm so sure that she's ready to save you from my clutches about now, but I have to warn you that, again it seems your mother is the real issue here."
"Rachna, what did you do?"
"Let's just say I improvised according to the situation, but in truth I'm not feeling good about what I've done either, so I think I'm going get my lunch to go as well." She took out her phone and sent her message.
"I really think you should go to her now, Shekhar, it wasn't pretty and I'm sure she will be more than happy to see you."
Motioning for the waiter to come and pack the meals in takeout containers, Shekhar looked worriedly at Rachna, "At least let me see you on your way first."
"No, it's okay really, I have a ride coming, and it would probably be best if we're not together when he gets here."
"Kabir, I gather?"
"Yes, so anyway I guess this is it. I truly hope everything works out with you and Neeta."
Abruptly holding her hand, Shekhar looked questioningly at Rachna, "Why are you making it sound as if we won't be in contact any more, Rachna?"
Frowning, Rachna removed her hand from his, "That's because we won't, I've made a promise. Just know that I am wishing the best for you two, okay?"
"What if it doesn't work out, and we're back at square one?"
"Then you better come up with another plan to sort your life out then Shekhar, because you can rest assured there's no way that I will be back at square one with you. You have to realize that under no circumstances will I be marrying you Shekhar." She glanced at her watch, and gathered her things, "Look I have to go; goodbye and again good luck."
That he hadn't responded made no difference to Rachna; she knew that she had done all she could, and so she walked away.
