Chapter Two
They said that when life gave you lemons, you make lemonade. Right now, Sanyukta was opening up to him, she was sharing her vulnerabilities, her fears and her feelings with him - but Randhir could not get himself to take advantage of that. This was what he had always wanted. He always wanted Sanyukta to open up to him. He always wanted her to disclose her weaknesses... he wanted to take advantage of all of that and hurt Sanyukta.
But that was the old Randhir.
That was the old Randhir who would live to hurt her, the old Randhir who would do anything to get on her nerves and irritate her. That was the old Randhir who would inflict pain upon her for his own amusement.
Now Randhir was different. Now he couldn't bear to see her hurt. When her eyes filled with tears, he would be the first one by her side to wipe her tears away. He wanted to eliminate the source of her pain, because her pain was now his pain.
Was Sanyukta still the same?
The same Sanyukta who would stoop down to any level to embarrass him, to humiliate him, and to cause him pain? The same Sanyukta who would behave foolishly to hit his ego? Was she the same Sanyukta as the Sanyukta who was in front of him?
That was Randhir's fear.
He was afraid of telling her his feelings, only for them to be made a mockery of. He was scared of being hurt. Perhaps, he shared Sanyukta's fear. The fear of broken hearts.
Randhir held Sanyukta against his chest protectively as she tightened her grip on his shirt. He didn't want to let her go - he hated to admit it, but he had fallen for her. This girl who he had sworn to be enemies with, was his greatest weakness, the only one he wanted to spend time with.
"Sanyukta," Randhir whispered, stroking her hair. "I won't break your heart."
He meant it. If Sanyukta opened up to him, if she disclosed her feelings, if she told him anything in her vulnerable state, he wouldn't take advantage of it. She moved her head backwards and looked at him, her eyes meeting his.
"Promise?" she asked him, her eyes holding not only fear, but something else - was that longing?
Randhir took her hand in both of his and looked her in the eye again.
"I promise," he replied.
She looked so beautiful - he didn't know why darkness seemed to illuminate her beauty, because as an engineering student, he knew that it wasn't possible to find light in darkness. All he wanted to do was to kiss her right now, to hold her forever and never let go.
Sanyukta leaned forward and kissed his cheek, causing Randhir to feel goosebumps all over his body. It had been way too long since he felt her lips anywhere near his body.
"Anyways, I have to go to sleep now Randhir," Sanyukta said with a smile, about to turn around and leave.
Leave? Now? Leaving him in this state? She couldn't do that to him.
"Sanyukta," Randhir gasped, grabbing her arm to prevent her from leaving. "I'm not going to let you leave so easily."
She turned around and pressed her body firmly against his once again, causing Randhir to groan.
"Why are you doing this to me Sanyukta?" he asked her, grabbing her waist again to make sure she remained in place.
She stood on her tiptoes and placed her lips half an inch in front of his ear. "Because I know it affects you, and doing things that affect you is fun," she whispered, causing Randhir's palms to get sweaty.
He just wanted to place her on top of a table and make love to her today, but he knew that kissing her itself had a long way to go, forget about making love.
Randhir hesitated for a moment before caving in. "Can I kiss you Sanyukta?"
Sanyukta brushed her fingers against his cheek and leaned in dangerously close to him. "No," she whispered. He could feel her breath on his lips.
Randhir's breathing quickened. How was he supposed to hold himself back when she was doing this to him?
"Why are you asking this time Mr. Shekhawat?" Sanyukta whispered, her eyes glancing down at his lips. "When last time you just did it."
Randhir felt a small smile forming at his lips and looked into her eyes.
"Because I'm not the old Randhir Singh Shekhawat," he whispered, tilting his head to the right.
Sanyukta grabbed his shirt so tightly that he nearly lost his balance. He was grateful for the bookshelf being behind him to support his back.
Randhir gently removed her hands from his shirt by lacing his fingers between hers and turned both him and Sanyukta around so she was against the bookshelf instead. Sanyukta gasped, looking shocked.
"Tell me if you don't want this Sanyukta," Randhir managed to get out with difficulty. "This isn't supposed to be a hate kiss."
He looked into her eyes, searching for a sign of hesitation, but he found none.
"Goddammit Randhir," Sanyukta whispered in a frantic tone. "Just do it. I want this."
