It was around ten thirty in the night. Strangely the streets of Mumbai were quite deserted. Hardly few people were there and most of them were old couples out for their walk. A girl was riding her scooty on her way back to home. The almost empty lanes and the cool breeze that was blowing kind of worried her. To add more to her tension the street lights were flickering. Silence was prevailing around her. Normally she would have loved this environment but it was different at that moment. She was so tired and exhausted from that day's events. To worsen her situation her scooty broke down. She walked it to a side and parked it there. Examining the tyres she found that the front tyre was punctured.
"Great! Nothing can be worse than this." She muttered under her breath while kicking the tyre. There was no one to help her at that moment.
"Universe ji, what do I do now? Why are you so mean to me today? First you make me late for the meeting at the institute then while teaching students, you make me fall such that I hurt my leg slightly and then I forgot my wallet at home and was almost on the verge of having no lunch. Fortunately her colleague cum friend agreed to buy her lunch.
There was no sign of a taxi or something else. There was not even a single vehicle passing by and her house is still three lanes down the street. She could walk down the streets but then her major fear would be awaiting her presence. And they were none else than the growling stray dogs. If there's something that can make her run for miles is a dog. She had a strong hatred for dogs and would prefer taking a long route if she found a dog standing even a mile away from her. She stood there rubbing her arms trying to think of some solution.
To her fortune, she heard a blow of the horn from a distance. Seeing a vehicle approaching towards her she signaled at it that she needed a lift. Once the jeep stopped in front of her, a person dressed up in his Khaki uniform stepped out. There was another person sitting at the driver's seat probably looking like the first one's subordinate.
"How can I help you Miss?" Asked the person standing in front of her. All she could do was staring at him. His eyes were the color of dark chocolate, so dark yet enthralling. His face held a confound expression yet it looked so charming. There were no freckles anywhere on his face. Her eyes travelled from top to bottom before returning back to his eyes. Even though he was dressed up in his work uniform it was clearly evident that he maintained his body perfectly. She guessed he might be having either six or eight packs.
"Excuse ne Miss? Are you alright?" He asked waving his hands in front of her breaking her trance.
"Huh! I...I'm sorry. Were you saying something officer?" She asked.
"Yes Miss. I was asking what you are doing here at this hour."
"Ah! I was just returning back from work when my scooty broke down. My house is just three lanes down the street and I was just waiting for someone to show up and maybe help me out."
"But you can walk all the way, can't you? It'd hardly take fifteen minutes."
"Err...I'm scared of dogs especially the stray ones. And they keep wandering about at this time."
"Don't worry Miss, we can drop you."
"Are you sure?"
"Yes I am. You can climb inside miss."
"Kria."
"Excuse me?"
"I mean call me Kriya. Miss sounds so weird."
"Alright then, Kriya, get inside."
"By the way were you guys going home?" She asked making herself comfortable at the back seat while the jeep started.
"We're on our duty. It's our shift for patrolling."
"Oh! I see. By the way officer what's your name?"
"I'm Reyansh but you can call me Rey and this is Rahul my junior." And so they kept conversing a bit.
"Nice to meet you guys. And thanks a ton for dropping me home." She replied getting down.
Once Kriya disappeared inside her house they drove back. For the rest of the night all that Rey could do was remembering her. She seemed to be a jolly person. Her eyes were hazel in color making them more captivating. And her smile felt like as if it was the world's most beautiful smile ever. They way her lips curled into grin made his heart flutter. He just shared only a few minutes with this girl and she already started ruling his mind.
The next day while returning from her dance institute an idea popped up in Kriya's mind. She was quite early to home when compared to yesterday. She quickly rushed to her flat and changed into fresh set of clothes. Managing to gobble up some food quickly, she rushed down back to the spot where she met Rey yesterday. She wanted to meet him again. The mere thought of his name sent curling sensations into her stomach. It was new that she was expecting. She hardly knew anything about him but still was excited to meet him.
"Please universe ji send him here." She prayed to her universe ji. Her fingers were crossed and she was waiting patiently. Ten minutes passed by and he didn't arrive. Today the street was back to its normal pace. People were walking, vehicles passing and some old ladies gossiping in a group.
"Kriya what are you doing here at this time?" A lady asked her while glancing at her watch.
"Uh, Sunita aunty I was waiting for my friend. We're having a sleepover and she doesn't know the route to my house. So I was waiting for her to arrive so that we can go to my house." She managed to blurt out a lie.
"Oh, nice beta. But be careful." Saying this, the lady left.
"Wow Kriya, you're awesome." She patted herself after Sunita left. Another ten minutes passed by but there still no sign of him. Slowly the people on the street started disappearing. Kriya didn't even realize that it's been half an hour since she was waiting for him. Dejected, she started walking when she heard the sound of a jeep. Her legs involuntarily stopped. The jeep came to a halt before her.
"Kriya what are you doing here?"Rey asked still seated in the driver's seat.
"Umm, I was waiting for you." She replied.
"And may I know why?"
"Because I wanted to talk to you." She replied slowly.
"Get inside then." He said with a smile. She hoped in instantly.
"And what did you want to talk to me?"
"Nothing just casual talks." He raised an eyebrow at this.
"You barely know me and still you want to talk."
"That's the point. We don't know each other. So we should get to know each other, shouldn't we?"
He chuckled at this. "You're cute. But you look even more adorable in those strawberry pajama of yours." He said glancing at her. Her face heated up because of embarrassment. She didn't even realize that she was in pajamas.
"So, what do you do?" He asked.
"I work in Dazzling Dance Institute."
"I see. Even I like dancing but I'm sure it wouldn't be as perfect as yours." He replied.
"Well, then I'm always ready to teach you."
"Thank you Madame."
"By the way where's your junior?"
"He's sick. He probably will not come on duty for a week."
"Okay, so tell me about yourself." She asked.
"I'm a police officer. For me my duty and and my work is most important of all. I live with my parents and an elder brother. Basically I have everything that is needed to lead a comfortable life."
"But you are so boring."
"You really think that?"
"Yup"
He leaned in towards her racing her heart as well giving churning sensations in her stomach. "To know whether I'm boring or not you need to spend time with me." He purred in her ears.
She sat there dazed not knowing if she could move or not. Her body became numb. He still didn't backed out. They stared in each others eyes. He smiled at her and moved back. Her eyes lowered and she could still feel as if his breath on her cheeks. Her cheeks burned due to his breath and the gushing up of her breath. She didn't even realize when the jeep halted.
"Your house has arrived." He said bringing her out of her thoughts.
"Huh...yeah...thanks."
"My pleasure."
"Uh, do you want to come in for a coffee." She blurted out as fast as she could.
"Sorry??"
"I mean...Uh...Coffee?"
"I'd love to but I'm on duty you see."
"A coffee wouldn't really harm your duty."
"Sorry babes but I'm always sincere and honest while on duty."
Her face fell down and she got down muttering a good night. "Umm...how about early morning coffee? My duty ends at 5AM and I'd really love to have coffee with you then."
On listening to this her face lit up. "That'll do. I'll be waiting for you Mr.Officer. Don't you dare you forget our coffee date." As soon as she blurted the word 'date' she bit her lower lip whilst he raised a brow. "Uh I mean our coffee meet...good night as of now or maybe happy duty." Saying this she rushed towards her house. He chuckled at her. "She's damn cute man!" He said before starting the jeep.
She shifted from on side to other. "Argghhh who the hell is ringing the bell so early in the morning."
"Coming." She yelled whilst walking towards the door rubbing her eyes. As soon as she opened the door her eyes widened.
"Oh sh*t. I forgot. I'm so sorry. Come inside."
"Cute night suit." He said with a mischevious smile. She was in her strawberry shortcake pajamas and a starped baby pink top. Her cheeks flushed. She immediately hurried towards her room. "Make yourself comfortable." She yelled.
After a few minutes she returned back.dressed in something proper. She proceeded to the kitchen to prepare coffee. He insisted on accompanying her. They chatted a lot. After two hours he left.
