ArHi FF: Yeh Saali Zindagi
Chapter 7
"What?? What are you saying Aman?" Khushi blurted out looking totally bewildered.
Averting his eyes from her, Aman answered sadly "I am only telling the truth, Khushi. I was in Mumbai when I got a call from Niya's family, informing me that she has been kidnapped. The kidnappers have asked them to take back the case against Vikrant if they want to see Niya alive again. They said that they don't want to drag their family in court. The fact that their daughter is alive is more than enough for them. That's the reason I had to cut short my trip."
"But how can that be bloody possible, Aman? We have assigned around 20 people to keep her safe." Khushi argued, looking outraged.
"Yeah I know. They all are dead. The house where we had kept Niya has been burned down. I don't know how but Vikrant got a tip on Niya's hideouts." Aman looked around, looking clueless about the situation like her.
"Oh god, I can't imagine from what Niya must be going through Aman. You know how much this is going to cost us, Aman? If anyone got to know about it, we will be blamed." Khushi squeaked looking horrified. Panic was quickly settling in her heart.
Barely aware of Aman moving towards her, Khushi gasped when Aman caught her elbow and spun her around "We will make through this, Khushi. And people know you are a good person, they won't do anything like that."
"Situations can manipulate any human being's mind Aman. In 10 years, I have witnessed the same thing happening again and again." Khushi snapped, her eyes now filling with tears.
"Then you know that you aren't wrong. You haven't been wrong in the past neither in present. It's going to be okay. Just trust me."Aman assured Khushi, shaking her gently by shoulders.
Sniffing lightly to keep the tears at bay, Khushi nodded and asked hoarsely "Where is your wife, Aman?"
"I have sent Kavya out of India just an hour ago. She is safe." Aman replied confidently as Khushi blinked back her tears and started walking towards the door "I need to visit Niya's parents."
"Khushi I don't think they will appreciate your visit at the moment." Aman hesitated.
As Khushi didn't stop for a second, Aman swore under his breath before following her out.
The moment her car entered into a narrow road which lead to Niya's house, Khushi tensed fidgeting with the hem of her pale blue saree in her nervousness. Looking at a very relaxed Aman sideways, she noticed how people have stopped in their tracks, their eyes trained on the car. Recognition was visible on their faces.
She stilled the moment Niya's house came into view. When Aman stopped the car, people started gathering around. It was unnerving for her.
Taking few moments to gather her courage, Khushi reluctantly stepped out of the car while Aman did the same. With her lips stretched into a polite smile, Khushi turned to face the people while pulling the pallu of the saree over her shoulder.
As she raised her joined hands above her head in greeting, people started greeting her warmly. For them, she was their Khushi MemSaab.'
While nodding at everyone, Khushi started walking forward making people step out of her way in respect.
Recognizing two-three peoples she had helped financially in past, she stopped to ask about their well- being while Aman hovered around her closely as if looking out for any protest or attack from anyone. Khushi had reached to the threshold of Niya's house when the door opened and Niya's father stepped out, looking aware of her arrival.
Joining her hands together in greeting, she said politely "Namastey Uncle, How are you?"
Hesitating for a moment to answer her question, he glanced inside the house before replying solemnly "I am fine, beta. I don't think this is a right time to invite you inside. Niya's mother is not well and won't welcome your presence in the house."
Khushi's smile faltered for a moment. Trying to keep panic out of her voice, she whispered "Then I must meet her, Uncle. I need to assure her that I will do everything to bring your daughter home safe."
"But beta..."
"I insist." Khushi said in a determined voice, watching how he shook his head before allowing her and Aman inside. The house was bathed in darkness with all the curtains closed, restricting the light out. A threatening calm was settled in the surroundings, as if waiting for the upcoming storm.
Feeling her way inside, Khushi trailed behind Niya's father with Aman following them closely. She stopped cautiously as a voice rang out loud and clear in the house "Who is there?"
She waited as Niya's father walked further, entering inside a room to his left. She heard him telling someone about her arrival. She tried to hear further but couldn't make out head and tail of the hushed conversation going on inside.
As she heard footsteps approaching them, she exchanged a glance with Aman who nodded at her as if trying to assure her.
Still, she jumped back looking alarmed when Niya's mother appeared in front of her, looking sick and bitter "It's you again."
"Let me explain..." Khushi started nervously, looking appalled by the way Niya's mother glared at her, a gaze full of hatred and disgust.
"How can you explain anything, Khushi? My daughter is missing because of you. I told her that we cannot file case against such a rich, famous politician but you blinded her by all your promises. My daughter has already lost her dignity now I don't even know where she is...it's all because of YOU..." Niya's mother shouted at Khushi, stepping forward while pointing at her.
"I was just trying to help her." Khushi said helplessly, looking close to bursting in tears.
"It isn't her fault..." Niya's father interrupted in between.
"It's all her fault. If the kidnappers killed my daughter, it'll be all because of her." Niya's mother shouted again, pushing Khushi away.
Stifling a sob, Khushi tried to say something but her mind was blank. She felt as if Lavanya's mother is standing in front of her. She trembled in fear just like her old self, something which had happened 10 years ago.
"ENOUGH!!!" Aman growled, stepping in front of Khushi trying to protect her "Do you even realize that you are blaming the girl who is trying to help your daughter? She came here to make sure that you both are okay and that's what you do in exchange of everything she is trying to do for your family. It's not Khushi's fault dammit!!!"
As Aman glared at them, Niya's parents looked away embarrassed while crying helplessly for their daughter. By the time, Aman managed to control his temper and turned to check if Khushi is okay, it was too late. She was gone.
He ran out of the house and saw Khushi driving the car away at a dangerously high speed. As Khushi glanced at him for the last time, Aman saw something in her eyes that panicked him.
It was resignation.
"Arnav?"
"Hmm..."
"Have you started re-writing your book?"
"What do you want, Shyam?" Arnav asked, looking wary. He cringed, knowing where this conversation is heading to.
"I want you to just complete your dream, I guess. That book is your dream." Shyam argued, looking outraged at how his best friend was taking this casually.
"It was, Shyam. Manyata is my dream now. Giving her the life she deserves is my new dream." Arnav replied, not looking at Shyam at all.
"Bullshit. Writing will always be your life, your dream about which you always have been so passionate. You are a much better writer than me. Don't do this. Don't sacrifice everything. Anjali won't like it." Slapping his hand on the desk, Shyam argued.
"Did she say that?"
"No. Or maybe yes."
"I hate you." Arnav groaned, trying to concentrate on work. He was still engrossed in his work while Shyam roamed in his cabin when Arnav's secretary barged in, informing them of Anuj's arrival at the office. Knowing that he was heading here, Shyam and Arnav groaned in frustration.
They were still looking apprehensively at each other, when the door opened and Anuj Raizada stepped in. Standing up in greeting, Arnav and Shyam looked at Anuj while the latter chose to stare at Shyam disapprovingly before settling his gaze on his son "I would like to talk with you, Arnav. Alone."
As Shyam walked towards the door, Arnav growled "I won't talk with you unless Shyam is here. I will tell him whatever you are going to say anyway. So just tell me what's it Bade Sahab?"
Anuj hesitated watching how Shyam stopped and took a seat beside Arnav than leaving the cabin and said authoritatively "I just wanted to talk to you about your wife, Arnav. Since Khushi is fighting a rape case against Vikrant, he is after her. He already attacked her before the marriage. So I just want you to..."
"To protect Khushi since she is in my house where your presence is not allowed?" Arnav completed suggestively making Anuj fume and look away.
As Anuj nodded reluctantly, Arnav smirked before sauntering towards him arrogantly "I can't believe it. Bade Sahab is asking for my help."
"I am not asking for your help. I am ordering you Arnav which you will follow otherwise..." Anuj snapped, his eyes flashing at Arnav in warning while Shyam watch the whole interaction in morbid fascination.
"Go ahead, say it. If I won't follow your orders, you will tell everyone that Anjali is alive." Crossing his hands against his chest, Arnav replied bitterly.
"I will. Khushi is family. I won't have you taking out all your anger against me on your wife. It's not right." Anuj said with determination.
"Oh so blackmailing your son is right? Throwing your only daughter out of your house is right? Why don't you say that Khushi is your winning ticket for elections and that's why you want her safe? It has always been about you, Bade Sahab. You are the most selfish person I have ever met." Arnav shouted, swiping everything on his desk on the floor by his hand in frustration, with a loud clatter.
"Arnav stop. Please calm down." Shyam said in an even voice, stopping Arnav from breaking anything further.
"Can you believe this man, Shyam?"
"Enough Arnav !!! I won't have you insulting me in front of your useless friend. You will protect Khushi." Anuj announced, his face going red in anger and embarrassment.
As Arnav started to walk forward to insult his father further, Shyam grabbed him back shaking his head in denial while Anuj walked out.
Shyam was still trying to calm Arnav down when his secretary came running in looking panicked. Losing all his control, Arnav thundered making his secretary jump back in fright "WHAT NOW??"
"It's about your wife."
As Khushi turned the car to left, her mouth twisted ruefully in mockery. Laughter bubbled inside her throat which had nothing to do with happiness. It was hysteric.
It was a result of the resignation that her heart finally accepted. Accepted that no matter whatever she did, she won't be able to wash the blood imprinted in her hands. Of her best friend.
It doesn't matter how many peoples she helped. It won't change the fact that she was the reason Lavanya died.
Stupid. Stupid Khushi.
It won't change the fact ever. It won't change anything, not now. Not ever.
Who was she fooling? Thinking that she can forget the past.
When she first saw Niya, she saw Lavanya-destroyed and shattered. She actually thought that by helping Niya, she will be able to give herself the closure she needed to stop feeling guilty and dirty like a murderer.
Stupid. Stupid Khushi.
Now she knew that no matter what she did, she cannot change anything. The voices in her head started together, jumbled and confused like her.
She heard Lavanya's shout closely followed by her mother's accusations and then Niya's mother's accusations. Murderer!!!
"STOP IT." Khushi shouted banging her fists against the steering wheel repeatedly, till the extent they were numb with pain.
She cried, her shriek full of suffering and pain. Tears streaked her face. Unaware of everything except the voices in her head, accusing and taunting, Khushi broke down.
Crying for losing everything.
Crying for her broken heart.
Crying for every moment she missed Lavanya. Crying for her own damned life.
Exhausted. Resigned. Khushi just wanted to accept everything to stop the voices which were tormenting her. Closing her eyes, she tried to let everything go.
Unconsciously losing her grip on the steering, she tried to let go. Until a loud honk broke her reverie.
As she opened her eyes, she saw her car heading towards a tree making her panic. Instinctively, her feet pressed the breaks.
But it was too late. Bracing her hands against her face, Khushi cried waited for the collision which never came.
A car bumped against hers, pushing it towards the road. As everything came to halt, she sighed in relief.
Until, she heard a loud crash.
