Chapter 2
"Come on, give us your tiffin or we'll pull your hair" the bigger boy threatened her and she further cowered in her seat, hugging her tiffin box with tightened hold.
"I am hungry too" she replied, almost pleading.
"Oh really?" said the other boy, holding one of her two braids which swung on her shoulder and pulling it hard.
"Ouch" she screamed, tears welling up in her hazel eyes as the remaining students of the class laughed at the sight.
"How dare you hurt my Khushi?" A loud, boyish voice cut across all other noise in the room and reached to the bunch of boys.
"Look, here comes her bodyguard" laughed the bigger boy and the rest of the class joined in while Arnav angrily strode towards the group, his fingers tightly clenched into a fist.
"Yes, I am her bodyguard. She's my best friend and I'll hit you because you have hurt her" said Arnav before he charged at the boy and started hitting him at any place he could find.
"What is going on here?" The teacher entered in the class room and pulled Arnav away from the boy who was swollen at places because of the blows.
While Arnav too was punished along with rest of the boys, eight years old Khushi smiled faintly, knowing her Arnav will always be there for her. He was her best friend after all.
~~***~~
"Arnav.. I am going to die. I am bleeding" cried Khushi on his shoulder while Arnav stood still, confused and worried.
They had been studying together in the sprawled garden of Raizada Mansion when Khushi had realised she was bleeding.
"Khushu, don't worry. Let's go to Ma, she'll help you" said a panicking Arnav as Khushi started complaining about the worsening stomach-ache.
He helped her stand and quickly led her to his mom who later took Khushi to her room and attended her.
It was then both of them learnt what adolescence exactly is all about and a 11 year old Khushi knew that Arnav will always be there for her. He was her best friend after all.
~~***~~
"Arnav, Sam wants to be friends with me. He says he likes me and he also said that I am beautiful" a blushing Khushi informed Arnav who was doing push ups in the jymming area of Raizada mansion and Khushi was sitting on his back, enjoying the lifts.
She sensed his body stiffening for a second and he abruptly stopped, asking her to get off of him.
"He doesn't seem like a genuine guy" said Arnav, buttoning his shirt while Khushi found her eyes admiring his shaping body and quickly looked away, feeling awkward and guilty.
"But what's the harm in trying? All my friends have a boyfriend. I have no one. It's embarrassing" explained Khushi, her eyes running back to stare at his pursed lips.
"Fine then! Go and try. I am getting late for my own date" he lied, making an excuse to drive her away so he could sulk alone.
"You are dating?" she asked, surprised by the news.
"Yes, I am. Have been doing so for over a month. Didn't get any time to inform you. Now, bye! I am getting late. See you around" He said, grabbing the sipper and marching out, missing the hurt in her eyes.
As for Khushi, she stood there alone, wondering the reason behind the sudden throbbing pain in some uncertain part of her heart.
Was she hurt because he didn't care enough to inform her about the news or the news itself was hurting her?
She didn't know and she didn't want to know, decided a 17 year old Khushi.
She tried to be happy for him as she was his best friend after all.
~~***~~
"OMG, Khushi. You're so lucky to be a friend of Arnav. He is so damn hot!" her friend said in an almost swooning voice, making Khushi laugh.
"Shweta, I bet you his temper is hotter"
"Whatever! I wish I could just kiss him someday. Just once."
"Hey, it's my friend you're talking about" Khushi complained, really offended.
"Oh chill, Khushi. It's not like I am really getting those delectable lips of him to kiss. I am not that lucky. But yes, this is exactly what I told Arjun" Shweta replied with a wink.
"Told what? That you want to kiss Arnav?" asked Khushi, her expressions somewhere near to being irritated, though her ears perked up at the mention of Arjun.
"No, you silly. I told him that "Hey, it's my friend you're talking about" replied Shweta, imitating Khushi's voice, the wink back on its place.
"What do you mean?" asked Khushi as she felt blood rising to her cheeks.
Arjun was new in the college and already a stud.
After Arnav if girls drooled over someone, it was Arjun.
Fun loving and a cool guy.
Very much like Arnav but nothing like Arnav. Thought Khushi as she recalled the admiring looks Arjun had been throwing at her the other day in the library.
She liked him too.
His smile was as infectious as Arnav's.
"Out of the wonderland, Miss Alice!" Shweta said with a chuckle, clicking her fingers before Khushi's eyes.
"So what did he say?" asked Khushi, trying to sound casual as she sipped her coffee.
"Well nothing much. He said he would want to go to the prom with a girl like you. A girl with long hair, silky hair, deep oceanic eyes, slender waist, swan like neck..!!! In short, he would have described every single part of your body had I not intervened" said Shweta, her eyes dancing in mirth and Khushi wondered whom Arnav was taking to the prom, not that it mattered to her but she needed to know, he was her best friend after all. She reasoned to herself.
~~***~~
As a year passed on, Khushi realised Arjun was a good person.
He was a man who would always know what she needed, what she liked and would leave no opportunity of making her feel special.
He will never forget to get her roses, a rose every day. He would plan outings, take her to SRK movies, hear her rants, smile at her childishness and stand with her under heavy downpour.
Yes, she liked every gesture of him.
Arjun was the best she could get. She had decided.
Life was going perfect.
But then Arjun had this new demand of taking their relation to the next level.
A level she had never thought about because to her, it was something only meant for two people who are bound together in the sacred ties of matrimony.
"You don't trust me, Khushi! You don't trust me enough. Or should I say you don't love me enough?" had been Arjun's words to her when she had shared her thoughts with him and she had thought over his words.
After Arnav, if she had learnt to trust someone it was Arjun.
He had been with her through thick and thin.
So, now if he wanted something from her, she was going to try.
But how?
The mere thought of involving herself with things more than kissing petrified her.
She had heard from her friends that first time was not always a pleasant experience, which had done no good to her fears.
So, she turned to the person she could trust with her life.
Arnav.
Her Arnav. She knew he would help her. He always had and like every time he didn't disappoint her.
But the next morning, life wasn't the same.
It was different.
As she woke up the next morning with his hands securely wrapped around her waist, she felt her heart fluttering like it had done years back, when he had kissed her cheek on her 15th b'day, when he had held her close to himself on a cold shivering night, but only this time, the feeling was too intense to ignore.
She studied his relaxed yet tormented face and it caused a stir in her heart.
Her eyes made a quick run over his naked torso and stopped at the red mark next to his collar bone and she blushed furiously recalling how she had bitten him hard to avoid herself from screaming his name as waves of pleasure had washed her.
She quickly got out of the bed and headed for a bath as she sensed him waking.
That had been the morning after which she had been to Arjun's place and an unexpected series of events had followed.
Now she was in a fix.
Arnav's silent confession had upset her two decade old belief.
She had always known that Arnav had a special place in her heart and why wouldn't he have it?
He was her best friend after all.
All these years she had grown up with the thought that there was no place for anything more than friendship between them.
She had spent her life laughing with him, crying with him, teasing him, pulling his leg, hug him but it possibly cannot be love?
If it was love how had she missed noticing it so far?
How hadn't she realised it?
Closing her eyes, she recalled each cherished memory.
She recalled the memory of dashing towards him to hug him after winning the first prize in the mimicry contest.
She recalled the way she had clung to his body and sobbed against his shoulder when she had learnt of her parent's departure.
She could still feel his small palms rubbing her back and his arms wrapped around her body in a protective way, telling her that he is there for her.
It was the day she had come to realise that he will be her strength; he will hold her protectively through all the storms of life.
She recalled his care brimming eyes as he had bandaged her scraped thumb; the wetness in his eyes which he had unsuccessfully tried to hide when she had woken up from her 48 hours long unconsciousness due to severe fever.
Was it because he loved her?
"Khushi, promise me that no matter what happens, you'll never hate me. Promise me that you'll always be my friend. If I ever hurt you, bring you sorrow, do know that it will never be intentional. You're my precious baccha, my everything" he had told her the day he had screamed at her for touching some diary of him which he always kept locked.
She hated to know that he had things he wanted to keep a secret.
So, one fine day, on finding his cupboard unlocked, she had taken out his diary and had hardly opened it when he had walked in and shouted at her like she had dared to touch his po*n collection.
The thought made her smile faintly.
He was weird when it came to his dairy and since then she had avoided even a look at it.
Thinking about avoidance brought her another memory when she had actually walked in his room to find him smooching a girl or maybe it was the other way around.
He was pinned against a wall and the girl was literally eating his lips.
The sight had disgusted her and she had spent an entire week avoiding him.
On a second thought, she had wondered if it really was disgust or something else.
It was something that had pained her heart and brought tears to her eyes.
She was confused with her reaction over it.
Whatever it was then, now she knew it was jealousy and hurt.
She had always thought of him as her personal property. Only she had the right to hug him, hold him.
No one else was allowed to do it.
It had taken her a week to get over the stupid possessive thoughts before she could see him again.
He had tried to explain her but she had forced him to let it be, that she didn't need any explanation for something she didn't care about.
Such had been her life so far.
There had been times she hadn't understood what she really wanted in her life.
So, this was it?
Was it love?
Did she love him?
Can all those strange, unnamed feelings she had gone through in her life so far be collectively named as love?
She needed to know and the only person who had answers was Arnav.
~~***~~
Seated in the poolside attached to his room, he was busy scribbling furious letters in his diary.
"She asked me to leave. I knew the day was near when I wouldn't be able to hold back my feelings anymore and she would know the truth that I love her. But I had never expected it to be this way. This could have gone better. She could have just slapped me for the kiss and hugged me, screamed at me that she doesn't want anything more than friendship. I would have been contended but this is killing me. How can she simply ask me to leave?"
"It shouldn't have gone this way. I cannot lose her. I need her in my life. She's my Khushi, my happiness. I can live without her love, but I cannot live with her ignorance, her hatred. We need to sort this out. We need to undo these past two days."
"I am waiting for her. I know she will come. She's stupid enough to confuse herself with things. By now she would have relived all our memories and she must have questions raging in her mind. She will need me to answer her questions."
"It's strange how she can't do anything without me. She always needs me and I am not saying I don't like it. I love her dependency upon me. It reflects her trust in me, maybe love too. Maybe she loves me too. I don't know. She's a confused soul and she would always rub off some of it on me. I am confused about her feelings for me but I am sure of mine. She's the only one. She's the first, the last, my everything and I am going to make her see it. I have already lost the friendship we had because I know it's never going to be same between us. She wouldn't hug me with the same warmth, her eyes wouldn't be glinting with the same mischief, she wouldn't trust herself alone with me, she wouldn't behave anything like she's always had. The night has changed a lot and my confession has made those changes permanent. Our friendship is no longer going to be the same, we have left it far behind but there is still something I want to hold onto. It's her. I want her. I love her."
As his pen stopped against the paper, he sensed her coming. He could feel her like always.
Closing the diary, he neatly placed it on the table top and walked back to his room.
~~***~~
"Why did you do it?" she screamed at him as he came in view.
"Khushi, listen to me" He said, bridging the distance to hug her but placing her palms on his chest, she shoved him away.
"Don't you dare hug me. I hate you" she screamed the words at him.
"No, you don't" he replied, taking another step at her.
"I know you don't love me but I know you don't hate me either" He continued, once again bridging the gap and holding her by the shoulders.
"Why didn't you ever tell me?" She asked, letting him hug her and in turn hr arms automatically went around his waist.
"Because I knew it would hurt you. You never thought about me the way I thought about you. To you, I was your everything except the man you can love" He answered, stroking her hair.
"So, why now? Why did you tell me now?" She demanded, seeking answers to all her questions.
"I don't know, Khush. I just did. It felt the right thing to do in that moment" He replied, pulling her closer to his body and tightening the hold.
"You know the day I had seen you kissing Tanya, I had felt something" She whispered, and he smiled faintly.
"And the other day, remember when you had told me you were dating? Even then.."
"You were jealous" He cut in, and pulling back from the hug she looked up at his face to find him grinning.
"You're laughing?" She asked, anger shooting through her eyes.
"Yes, I am laughing, Khush, I always thought it was just me, but it was you too" He answered and she felt his infectious smile getting to her.
"Tell me more" He demanded, sitting on the corner of his king size bed and she took a seat in the little space between his legs with his hands around her waist and his head resting on her shoulder.
"No, you tell me. I want to know something" she said, intertwining her fingers with his.
"How do you know you love me?" she asked, her eyes curious and he knew what she wanted to know.
She wanted to how one decides that he/she is in love.
She wanted to know if she loves him or not.
There was hope and he was going to try for it.
"Before I answer your question, let me ask you something, Khush, and you'll have to be honest with your answers" He said, whispering the words in her ear and she nodded in a daze, his breath fanning her neck.
"When you're with me, how does it feel?"
"I am happy. I feel secure. I feel like I have everything." She replied, letting herself to be carried away by the whirlpool of memories and seek out the answers from those two decades she had spent with him.
"When I am away, how does it feel?" He asked, his fingers drawing patterns on her palm.
"Feels like something important is missing. It's like something too precious has been taken out of my life and I desperately want it back." She replied, recalling the days when he had been away for a month on vacation with his family and she had insistently stayed back due to her plane phobia.
"How does it feel when I touch you" He asked, his voice getting lost and huskier as his lips softly touched her neck.
"Ar..n..av.." She moaned at the feel, digging her nails in his hand.
"Tell me Khushi, how does it feel when I touch you?" He demanded, placing open mouthed kisses on her neck.
"Your touch makes me feel...alive. It sets my skin on fire. I try to ignore the tingling sensations which run down my body but it's a hard work. I get lost." She whispered the words, her mind running back to the rainy day when he had held her shivering frame close to his own sodden body and had rubbed her palms to provide her some heat.
A heat which had threatened to consume her sanity but she had pulled away in time before it could overwhelm her, telling him that she needed to get home.
"How does it feel when I ignore you? When I hold Tanya in my arms?" He asked, concentrating his lips to her earlobe.
"I want to do this to you" She said and before he could ask what he felt a sharp pain as she jabbed a finger in his stomach making him yelp.
"You're a devil, Khushi" He winced and tried to catch her as she jumped off her seat, laughing at his expressions.
"I was just answering your questions" She replied and was stunned as he reached to her in one quick stride and pinned her against the wall, his eyes intense.
"And do you know what I want to do to you whenever you talk about Arjun?" He asked his voice deepening and she mechanically shook her head.
"I want to seal your mouth..like this" He said, lowering his mouth upon hers and capturing her lips in a demanding kiss, urging her to respond.
She clutched his shoulders for support as his tongue swept over her lower lip and she parted her lips, inviting him further.
"Think upon your answers and tell me Khushi, do you love me?" he asked against her lips, his tongue probing her mouth to taste her sweetness.
As his tongue explored each corner of her mouth, leaving no crevice untouched she tried to focus her dazed mind upon her own words.
"When you're with me, how does it feel?"
"I am happy. I feel secure. I feel like I have everything."
"When I am away, how does it feel?"
"Feels like something important is missing. It's like something too precious has been taken out of my life and I desperately want it back."
"Tell me Khushi, how does it feel when I touch you?"
"Your touch makes me feel alive. It sets my skin on fire. I try to ignore the tingling sensations which run down my body but it's a hard work. I get lost."
"That's what love is, Khushi" He murmured, pulling back from the kiss and resting his forehead against hers.
"Do you feel this for Arjun?" He asked breathily and she shook her head.
She wondered if she felt anything at all for him.
He was a friend she had learnt to trust upon but his constant demand of physical intimacy had many a times made her think if he really loved her or lusted her.
Whatever it was, she realised it didn't matter anymore.
Arnav had made her see the things she had been running away from and this realisation of things-more-than-friendship meant the world to her.
It was always wrong of her to be with Arjun because she could have never loved him, never felt what she feels for Arnav.
So, it was a thing for his good, her own good.
She needed to walk out of the Arjun-shell and tell him that she never loved him.
It was an illusion she had woven around her to keep herself away from the feelings she never wanted to acknowledge.
Now was the time to walk out of the shell and accept the truth.
"Close your eyes, Khushi, and tell me what do you see?" Arnav demanded, reading her thoughts in her eyes and as if on cue, her eyes closed slowly.
There he was, chasing her for something while she was sticking out a tongue at him.
Her Arnav!
The little smile on the corner of her lips answered his question and he let go the breath he had been holding.
The clouds of denial had passed away and she could see the sun smiling down at her.
"Arnav, I..lo..love...you" She whispered, happy tears streaming down her face and as she opened her eyes, she found him on his knees.
"I love you too, Khushi, I always have" He replied, presenting out the diary to her and she smiled in between her tears.
"It's for you. I know you have always wanted to read this" He said, getting up as she took the diary in her hands.
Now, even without reading, she had an idea of what it held. She was going to read it with him and she knew it was going to make her fall in love with him all over again.
