Zeeshan and Aaliya have been engaged since childhood. Their parents have been close for years and even Aaliya's best friend is Zeeshan's younger sister Maryam. Whilst both families live in Bhopal, Maryam has been living in Mumbai with her uncle and aunt due to attending a college there. Maryam begins to like her senior, Zain Osman Abdullah and is happy when he begins to notice her. Though Maryam likes him, Zain has no such feeling towards her and is simply stringing her along as he doesn't think he is 'the one' for her.
On the other hand, though Aaliya has a fondness towards Zeeshan, he doesn't really share the same feelings for her. As they have been engaged and paired together from a young age, both of them grew up knowing they will have to marry at some point, though it's only Aaliya who began to develop romantic feelings towards Zeeshan. Zeeshan tries to keep a distance from Aaliya, who is unsure of Zeeshan but she doesn't think of anything bad. Whilst this is happening, Maryam finds out that Zain was only stringing her along and becomes depressed (she had fallen in love with Zain but though Zain did not reciprocate her love, she still began to think Zain loved her too). Zeeshan, who is getting stressed over his sister's well-being, begins to take his anger out on Aaliya. Later, Aaliya finds out Zeeshan has been cheating on her with another girl and learns of how he really feels about her. She is upset and heartbroken but finally breaks off the engagement. This revelation causes Ghulam and Shabana to break their friendship with Zeeshan's parents. However, Aaliya is still concerned over Maryam's emotional state and gets angry with the guy who hurt her. She starts hating men and doesn't trust anyone (for what happened to her best friend and now Zeeshan).
About two months pass by, and Aaliya decides to move to Mumbai to study further at a college. It's there where she finally meets Zain: the Casanova of the college. He is hot, young and rich and every girl wants to be seen with him. Though on the exterior, Zain can be quite immature and 'bad', deep down he really does care about people but keeps his feelings to a minimum because he doesn't want anyone to see him weak. The only person who knows everything about him, is his best friend Rizwan - who tries to help Zain and make him see sense whenever Zain is up to no good. Aaliya attends college, keeping herself to herself until one day Zain hurts a girl by humiliating her and Aaliya gets angry with him. They argue with Aaliya getting the final word. For the first time, someone has challenged Zain and it begins to hurt his ego!
Zain thinks every girl wants him but there's one girl who doesn't: Aaliya - and he wants to know why! They have many arguments but slowly they become friends and Zain begins to admire Aaliya. For the first time, he sees a girl for more than just a girl and he begins to fall in love with her. However, in reality Aaliya has another motive! She is there to avenge her best friend Maryam and to teach Zain a lesson for hurting girls and she does this by making him fall in love with her and then Aaliya begins to give him a taste of his own medicine. However, Zain actually starts changing and becomes a better reputation all whilst Aaliya brings his reputation down (a way of teaching him a lesson) but Zain takes no notice of that. Later, Zain finds out Aaliya was pretending all along and is hurt. Between the hatred and the fights, Aaliya does realise that Zain is changing but doesn't bring herself to forgive him nor does he allow himself to ask for forgiveness (both are stubborn). Aaliya begins to realise her feelings for Zain but doesn't express herself, neither does Zain. By the end of college, both stay apart from each other because both of their wants and desires are completely the opposite. Zain had never thought he'd fallen in love with a girl like Aaliya (who is simple but yet its her way of challenging him that made him see her truly), and Aaliya never thought she'd fall in love with someone who is not at all mature like she wanted. They decide for themselves that it's better they stay apart as they are not what the other wants.
Flash-forward a few years and Aaliya has just become a doctor whilst Zain has inherited his family business. A lot has changed in the last few years, Zain has become a lot mature and doesn't treat girls like trash whilst Aaliya is still her caring self, she is a lot quiet than she used to be. The spunky Aaliya and the loud Zain have been replaced with mature, older, and quiet versions of themselves.
Aaliya's parents and Ayat, her sister have relocated to Mumbai after Aaliya gets a job in the city hospital. One day she encounters Zain's niece (one of Nafisa's daughter) and helps her get better - Aaliya interacts with Zain's brother, Fahad and his two wives, Shazia and Nafisa and has hit and misses with Zain - but neither see each other. She also meets Osman and Suraiya, and she puts a good impression in Osman's mind - and he is amazed to see how respected and moralistic she is. Meanwhile, Ayat meets Zain's best friend Rizwan and both start to like each other - Rizwan however has no clue that Ayat is Aaliya's younger sister and Ayat has no clue about Rizwan being connected to Zain (although she does know about Aaliya liking a man named Zain once upon a time).
Aaliya's parents want her to get married whilst Zain's parents also want him to get married but both disapprove of all the proposals sent to them. Osman, still impressed by Aaliya ends up meeting Shabana and Ghulam and both sets of parents interact with each other. One day, Aaliya's at the Masjid teaching children Quran and there she comes face to face with Zain. Zain has come there to give food for the needy people. She is shocked to see him praying Namaaz there as he was never the religious type of person before. They both see each other but don't say a word, they walk past each other like total strangers. So many years have gone by, and yet in that single moment - their feelings came back. Those feelings that they had hidden away. Both Aaliya and Zain are sent a proposal, and due to their thoughts of one other, without considering the prospect, nor asking any questions both say yes to agree...all without realising that the proposal had come from each other's side!
Both - thinking about each other's well being - decide to forget and move on, yet they still can't. Once again their paths cross but though their love is strong, they congratulate each other on their marriages and promise to never cross paths again. Heavy hearted, they walk away...
Ayat and Rizwan on the other hand, realise that the groom is Zain and the bride is Aaliya and both realise how much ZaYa love each other. They decide on prolonging the truth so that Zain and Aaliya don't decide to separate, and finally do confess their love. As the day of the wedding gets closer, Zain and Aaliya get intrigued as to who they are marrying but Rizwan and Ayat prevent them from finding out. Maryam makes a comeback, and after years she has finally gotten over her love for Zain and realised it wasn't actually love after all. She has been married for a few years and also has a little girl who she loves. Maryam, who has found out about Zain and what Aaliya did for her, tells her that if two people love each other, then they should be together - hinting that Maryam knows about Aaliya's feelings for Zain. Aaliya however, wonders whether Zain loves her too, after all these years still? She is confused and is even more confused about the man she is supposed to marry. Who could she marry someone when her heart yearns for someone else?
On the day of the wedding, just before the 'qubool hai' Aaliya and Zain both find out they are marrying each other. They are shocked and happy at the same time, but they are still reluctant to confess. Zain tells everyone that he needs to talk to Aaliya alone and everyone gets concerned, especially Zain's parents who think he is going to put a stop to this wedding. Reluctantly, the family agree and its there where Zain and Aaliya have an awkward talk. They look at each other but find it difficult to say anything when Maryam comes and tells Zain to ask for her forgiveness. He does so without questioning and she laughs, forgiving him and saying she has forgotten him long ago but one girl hasn't: Aaliya. He is shocked that Aaliya has thought of him just like he thought of her. With the help of Ayat and Rizwan, Zain and Aaliya finally confess to each other whilst the parents are concerned (thinking their children are trying to say no to this wedding).
After a heart to heart alone, Zain and Aaliya finally come out and that's where the qazi asks them... "qubool hai?" ... they think back to all those days, with Zain thinking about how much Aaliya has changed him for the better and Aaliya thinking about how she fell in love with someone who she could never think of and yet now cannot live without him.
Finally, after all these years - Zain and Aaliya finally become one!
