CHAPTER 3
It had been 15 days since Karan's surgery. He was recovering quite well. He could sit up on the 6th day and by the 10th day he even walked a little bit, although not without support.
And everyday since the day of his surgery, Randhir visited him, accompanied by Sanyukta. She insisted on going with him despite his repeated insistance of otherwise.
"Arey tumhe kya problem hain agar mein jaun toh?" she used to ask him. Ultimately he gave up trying to convince her to stay back. They used to visit the hospital in the evenings once their classes got over. Of course they had taken special permission for leaving the college premises.
Sanyukta loved these moments she spent in Randhir's company. It was like witnessing an entirely different person. Everyday she used to sit in the hospital lobby, while he went inside Karan's cabin. Randhir spent hours sitting by his friend's bedside, cracking jokes, drinking coffee and talking all sorta things! All this while Sanyukta observed him, amused, trying to know more about this side of his personna. Strangely for her, Randhir never called her inside. And she didn't know the reason for that, but knew better than to argue with him.
-DAY 16-
The final bell rang and their classes were over. Sanyukta almost ran to her hostel, took a shower, changed and hurriedly had some noodles.
"Kaustuki, bye. I have to hurry. Randhir will be waiting", Sanyukta spoke hurriedly to her best friend.
"Ok, i will see you later then", replied Kaustuki.
~0~
"You are late Agarwal", Randhir said sardonically.
"Oh please, hardly by 5 minutes", retorted Sanyukta.
And off they went.
Their journeys were always quiet. For Randhir, he enjoyed this silence. It made him calm. He would be kidding himself if he didnt admit that having Sanyukta for a companion all through the past fortnight had been a huge blessing for him. She made him feel calm and composed. And for Sanyukta, she loved to admire him in silence. But today she decided to break it for once.
"Umm Randhir...", she paused waiting for his response.
"Bolo.." he said quietly still looking out of the bus window.
"Why don't u ever call me inside karan's cabin? Is it because I am the reason he had to leave the college?" she enquired. It was a question that her plagued her mind since day 1 and she decided to ask him today.
At first Randhir was a bit taken aback. But soon he regained his demeanour and replied, "No...it has been a year since that. And i think u have proven to be an ok engineer.."
"An Ok engineer? Seriously?? I am a very good engineer u MCP", Sanyukta interrupted him.
He smirked and continued, " Yeah well whatever. So as i was saying.. that is not the reason. I just don't feel the need for u to be there."
"But why not? I have been going to the hospital for so long but have never visited him" Sanyukta pressed on.
"Trust me Sanyukta. It's for the best", Randhir said with finality.
She didn't argue anymore but decided to change the topic.
"Why don't u ever open up?" she asked.
He turned his face away from the window and looked at her, his brown eyes boring into her black ones and he spoke, "I don't feel the need to. I am happy in my space. Solace in solitude, u know." And he looked away.
"Really? U never feel like sharing anything with anyone? Because i have seen u with Karan and ur other friends. U are so cheerful, full of life...toh fir humare sath kyun itna rude ho tum?"
For a moment Randhir was stumped. He hadn't realized that she had taken note of such minute details about him. Somewhere deep down he felt glad that she cared. But he was Randhir. Admitting feelings was like owing to a sin as far as he was concerned. So instead he replied her in the only manner he knew best.
"Tum mera interview le rahe ho? It's my life Sanyukta and I lead it the way I want. So do one thing and stay away."
And even as he spoke those words he realized she was hurt. Her face fell and he was sure that he saw traces of tears in her eyes as she turned her face away from him. No one spoke for the rest of the journey.
-HOSPITAL-
Just like always Sanyukta waited in the lobby while Randhir went inside to Karan's room. But within minutes he came out with a big smile on his face. It had been days since she had seen him so relaxed.
"They are releasing him today", he told her and went to talk with the doctors.
Sanyukta was happy to hear this. Karan's mishap had taken its toll on Randhir. But now there was no cause for worry. Everything had fallen into place. On an impulse Sanyukta decided to meet Karan just this once.
She turned and saw Randhir talking to the doctor. She remembered what he had told her earlier in the bus, but decided to enter Karan's room anyway.
-Karan's room-
Sanyukta entered the room as quietly as possible and saw Karan half-seated, his back supported by the bed. There was bandage on his head and he was still on IV-fluids. But he looked otherwise okay.
He looked up and saw her and frowned.
"Hi Karan", Sanyukta said with a smile, "Ab kaise ho?"
Karan kept looking at her for a few seconds before realization dawned him and his face turned into disgust.
"Tum? Tum wahi ladki ho na jiski wajah se FITE mein mera admission cancel ho gya tha?"
Sanyukta was taken aback. She had expected him to have moved on from that incident. But clearly she was mistaken.
"Ya, I am Sanyukta. And I am really sorry about ur admission. I am here with Randhir, just making sure u are ok..."
"Dekho miss, I will be ok if u get the hell out of my sight. Pataa nhi yeh Randhir ne tumme kya dekh liya ki tumhe yahan bhi le aya...please aur tumhari ehsaan ki mujhe zarurat nhi...get lost", Karan spoke coldly.
Sanyukta's anger flared like a volcano erruption, but she composed herself.
"Chhod Sanyu, yeh bimaar hain, isse ladke kya faida...rehne de aur nikal ja yahan se", she thought to herself.
And without another word she walked out of the room. Just as she was about to leave, she bumped into Randhir who had returned.
"Sanyukta...kaha gayi thi tum?" he enquired.
"Karan's room", she mumbled without meeting his eyes.
And Randhir didn't need any further explanation to know what had happened.
He entered Karan's room without uttering another word to Sanyukta.
Sanyukta was disgusted at Karan's behaivour. She thought about how much Randhir cared for Karan and what kind of a person Karan was in reality. It made her sad. She knew Randhir deserved a better friend. That guy even in his sick bed was so rude.
-30 minutes later-
Randhir came out of the room and said," Chalo wapas. They will release him in an hour and there's no point staying here now."
And they started their return journey.
They boarded a bus and got adjacent seats, with randhir sitting near the window.
"Tum uss room mein kyun ghusi? Zyada smart kyun bante ho? I told u na, u aren't needed there? Then why did u still go?" spat Randhir.
To his surprise sanyukta just smiled a little and said, "Tum jante the that Karan had still hadn't forgiven me, right? Is that why u never used to call me inside?"
Randhir was surprised as to how she had guessed.
"She knows me too well ", he thought. but he kept quiet and turned his face away from her without replying.
Silence surrounded them again until she spoke.
"So that's it then...", Sanyukta said.
"That's what?" Randhir asked.
"Our daily routine comes to an end", Sanyukta said a bit ruefully, "Karan is getting released, so no more hospital trips."
"Yeah, thank heavens. This hospital atmosphere was getting on my nerves", replied randhir feigning happiness. But somehere within he knew what she meant. The daily hospital visits had become a ritual for him and he actaully used to look forward to them. It was the only time he got to spend with his best friend. And it was the only time he got to spend with her. Sanyukta Agarwal had grown on him and he didn't know how or when. All he knew was that he enjoyed her company, he enjoyed teasing her, he enjoyed the look of anger on her face when she argued with him.
He was grateful that she had decided to accompany him every single day to the hospital. He knew she had done it for him. And now that they wouldn't need to be at the hospital there would be no more reason for him to meet with her everyday.
"I will miss this daily routine", Sanyukta spoke softly breaking his trance. She had spoken his mind and he looked at her in surprise.
Her face reflected the emotions he was going through and he realized just how much one accident had brought them closer.
Soon they reached FITE and like everyday Randhir walked Sanyukta upto her hostel.
Once they reached, she looked at him, smiled and said, "I am glad Karan is ok Randhir. I know how much he means to u."
"Yeah, i am glad as well", he replied, "And thanks Sanyukta...for everything."
"My pleasure", she said, "Cya in class tomorrow. Bye"
"Bye", he waved.
And just as she was about to enter her hostel he called out, "Umm Sanyukta."
She turned and he continued, "I know Karan behaved rudely with u today. And I am sorry for that..."
Sanyukta Agarwal's face broke into a smile. She knew how much effort it must have taken the great Randhir Singh Shekhawat to give her an apology.
With a swift motion she went towards him, gave him a quick peck on the cheek and ran inside her hostel. And this time it was Randhir's turn to be left rooted on the spot, his cheeks burning, his heart racing and his face a deep shade of red.
