Hyderabad

"Are you sure you want to leave the place?"

Khushi asked her friend as she dragged a bag along the crowded platform as the latter struggled with fishing in the water bottle that she bought into her bag. She waited for her friend to look up at her as they halted at their terminal. The train would arrive any moment now and though she knew the reasons and need for her friend to leave the city for a while, Khushi couldn't help but think if things would shape up in a better way if she stayed behind.

"We have been through this a while ago," her friend replied back, her hazel eyes oddly at peace, despite of the storm in her life. "I need some time alone and away from the happenings and Dad wants me to be home for the Christmas, anyways. It's not like I am running away, Khushi. Stop bothering, I am fine."

"It's bothering because you say you are fine, Allie." Khushi snapped in irritation, not pleased with her decision. "You and I very well know that you aren't fine." She placed her palm on her friend's elbow, trying to sooth her inner struggle, "you didn't have to pretend, Allie. I have complete faith in you that you will not take any decisions without thinking twice. It's just... you seemed to work just happily. I wasn't aware of the problems until a week ago and now, with you leaving, it just caught me off-guard, I think."

Allie smiled at her friend as she hugged her, trying to make her rest in peace in her absence. "I know," she said, looking straight at Khushi, "I didn't want you to be upset by sharing the problems in my love life, which is quiet natural for a couple who have been in a relationship for about three years now."

Khushi laughed at her as Allie stated with a shrug. "That is true." She agreed. "It still amazes me, as how silly your fights sometimes are. However, if there is anything you want to share..." she said seriously as she looked at her friend, "you know I'm just a call away. Not knowing what's happening in my friend's life gives much more pain than knowing what exactly is wrong with her, Allie."

"Unfortunately," Allie shook her head just as the announcement broke through the speakers, "there's no time for you to lecture or the strength in me to hear your blah blah... I have been used to you for more fifteen years now, Khushi. You know that I'm not going to change, then why bother with the philosophical talks?"

Khushi raised her hands in midair as a gesture to make peace between them. "I give up, no more talks that would just consume my energy. Now," the friends stepped in the train, dragging the bags. Once they settled on the seats, she resumed speaking. "how long are you going to stay with the family?"

She watched carefully as Allie sighed and closed her eyes, sinking back onto the seat. "As long as I find a way back and..." she paused for a brief second before adding, "when I can face him in a more matured way." She looked at Khushi with a broken smile as she said in a barely audible voice, "I'm having second thoughts about us, Khushi. He feels like I'm invading his personal space. I didn't understand that. How is it me invading his space when all I asked him was about his decision regarding his higher studies?"

"Allie..." Khushi held her friend's hand but wasn't sure what to say, for one thing, she had no clear view about the situation her friend was in. Though she knew that Allie was the sensible person among them, she couldn't wholly support her as the other person involved in this was her friend too. And as much she hated to be in a position where she had to choose in supporting among her childhood friend and a brotherly figure, it was where she stood in that moment. And that helplessness, Khushi hated it.

"He's been accepted by Stanford," Allie informed, tears welled up in her hazel eyes, "and I came to know about it a week later through one of his girlfriend's... I was hurt, Khushi, so hurt that I demanded him for the reasons for not sharing such great news. Hiding an important decision which would affect our relationship is nothing but me asking about the same makes me an insane girlfriend who hangs on to her boyfriend like there is no tomorrow."

If Khushi was shocked at her having second thoughts, the reason just cemented the trust she had on Allie. She knew nothing regarding the fights between two committed people, but as much she knew, she agreed with her friend. No person could be able to digest such thing with ease. It called for temper where one often losses the patience and give in to the pure rage. She saw her friend biting her lips and smiled, squeezing her hand as a silent gesture to show her support. "I can see there is more to the matter." Khushi said gently,"I'm sure what you shared is a mere glimpse. Allie, I know you'll not allow your anger make a decision for you. However, I would like you to know that you should let go of it for some time... at least give yourself some time to calm down before thinking about having second thoughts. Give him some time and see what he has to say in it. Whatever it might be, you guys have to speak and decide, Allie."

Allie smiled, feeling better after letting some of her pain shape up with words. She shook her head, forcing herself to cheer her friend and herself, she asked the thing that was as important in her friend's life as it. "So, how's the mission find Krishnaa a suitable groom' going on...?"

"And you find it funny!" Khushi rolled her eyes at the dramatic but needed change in the matter. It was the person who Allie was - never liking herself being so consumed by her pain. She always found a way to smile - a smile that would make her loved ones, rest in peace. "The hunt's on full swing, unfortunately. None of the grooms gained an instant liking from Papa and the ones that did, there was something lacking in the whole person that he is, fortunately. Like I said earlier, I'm sure Papa takes ages to select a person with whom he could trust my happiness with."

"Chalo," Allie grinned with a wink. "At least, one of us will get married in the near future. Hopefully, the New Year brings with it the spouse we so long for."

"No way am I allowing you to wish for such thing, Mia Alannah Mathew!" Khushi exclaimed with horror. "I don't know about you but I sure am not going to get married to a complete stranger. We are barely 22, Allie. It isn't a right age to get married as if we are born to do the thing alone."

"For the elders," Allie shrugged just as they made their way towards the door as it was time for Khushi to leave, "it is the only thing any sane girl... oops... woman need to do, darling. Stranger or not, they'll never accept the fact that women can wait until her late twenties at the least."

Khushi stepped onto the platform after a brief hug. "Call me as soon as you reached, and don't forget to bring Auntie's Christmas cake, or else, you all be dead." She warned.

"Aren't you going to plead me?" Allie questioned, her brows arched perfectly with one hand on her hip, the other holding the door handle for the support. "Anyways, I'm sure you'll call me before I have a chance at it. And about the cake, I'm not sure I'll be able to stop myself from ravishing it on my way back."

"Then you can't be saved from my hands," Khushi threatened back, making her friend laugh aloud at her harmless words, though her emerald eyes tried to give away a glare.

"You and I both knew that Varun will stand in front of me," Allie smiled sweetly, battling her lashes to add the effect. "That meant, against you, Khushi."

"What had I done in my previous birth to be blessed with such torturous friend and cousin?" Khushi mused aloud, making Allie laugh further.

As she watched the train left the platform, until she lost the sight of Allie, Khushi wished for her friend to find her way back to the happiness that she so deserved.

***~***~***

"Ravi, son of your Chachi's cousin, is visiting the family for the New Year and stays for a month or two."

She heard her father and sighed. By the time she reached home, she found her parents engrossed in a conversation and the atmosphere said what it was that they were speaking about. One look at her younger sister after she reached their room proved it. Same old story' was all Megha said in reply to her unvoiced question. It irked her as how her parents were serious about a girl getting married at a right age, though Khushi never understood what the right age really meant. It had been six months that she had finished her Bachelor's degree and working in the same firm that she had done her practical training from the past five months. She had a plan ready for the life, and she wasn't intending to change it just because a man was supposed to enter into her life. And she couldn't entertain that. However, she knew she had no heart to say no' to her parents; for one thing, they weren't forcing her to accept their decision. They were sharing their views and beliefs in traditions and age-old morals. All they wanted was their daughters' happiness and for that, they could do anything to ensure that.

Anand waited for her to speak, blinking at his wife who seemed to be frozen in the middle of some crisis. They had been speaking about the man and his family for two weeks now, only approaching their elder daughter once they were satisfied that they could give a serious thought about the man. Ravi was a software engineer, working for a reputed company in California from the past four years. The alliance had come to them through a relative of his younger brother's wife, and he had discussed with his brother before broaching the subject with his wife. He knew how his daughter views regarding her getting married but the father that he was, wanted to provide her a secure life with a partner who deserved her. After discussing with the family regarding it, they had agreed to give him a fair chance and so, wanted to set a date so that the families could meet, and so were the two whom they wanted to get involved into.

"Papa," Khushi turned towards her father as she said, her eyes casted low as she framed her words with utmost care. "I can see where this conversation is headed to." She looked at him then. The decision had to be made. "I know you meant well, Papa. I know what you are really implying about this man. But Papa, I don't think I'm ready to meet him, or anyone, in that prospect."

Anand smiled, and so was his wife, Nandini. "No girl will ever be ready to meet her prospective groom, Krishnaa." He said while patting her head. It was one thing that hadn't changed over her life. Her father was the only person who called her by her given name. Though, he was the one to call her as his happiness, his Khushi', but he never used that name. She loved the way her father called her - that simple gesture spoke a lot about the man that he was. There was a reason for him to select that name for her and Khushi had been impressed when she understood its meaning. People in her professional line usually called her by her given name, but none of them pronounced it correctly. They often used a soft A' at the end, instead of prolonging it. That was the reason why her friends chose to use Khushi' instead of Krishnaa', to avoid the confusion between her and her cousin, who had been named as Varun Krishna'. As kids, they used to introduce themselves with their spellings and their friends made it a point to tease them by that. Khushi was tired over the years and stopped explaining the difference between two names and their significance, only clarifying it when needed or when she was irritated.

"Papa..." Khushi called out, trying to find a way to avoid the conversation but stopped when her father shook his head.

"Let me speak, Krishnaa." He said softly yet firmly. "I know that you are aware regarding us discussing about your wedding for few months now. I do think this is the right time for us to have this conversation without further delays; for one thing, I really want you to settle down. Nothing is important than to see you happy. I'm a common man, Krishnaa - a father of two daughters, living in a world where there is no guarantee for women's safety." He paused for a while, allowing his words sunk in her mind and continued once Khushi nodded at him. "As much you might not want to hear my views, but I would like you start thinking about the wedding. We will never ask you to follow our decision against your will, you have my word. It will be you who has to decide with whom you are going to spend the rest of your life. So, here's how it works. We see a guy, and approach you if we are positive about him, and you then will meet him. If you think that things can be worked out between you and him, we are all okay with it. From where we came, this is how it generally works."

"I know, Papa." Khushi smiled as she said. "I'm never going to question you regarding the traditions, as I know how you value them. I do understand what you mean, Papa. There is no one in my life." She confessed while looking at her mother. "There never will be any such guy for whom I'll go against your wishes, Ma. It's not someone that's stopping me, but it's the age thing. I mean, I wanted to settle down first, stand on my own feet, before committing for a long lasting relationship."

"We just wanted to voice it, Khushi." Nandini spoke for the first time throughout the conversation, her smile spoke of her trust on her daughter. "It's our duty to speak about them... the love thing that youth seems to be so attracted. Meeting in the morning, spending a day together and breaking up by the dusk... that's not the way that works in our society, Khushi. In plain and simple, we would like you to meet Ravi this Sunday. Is that okay for you?"

"And I think no parent is supposed to give the daughter a chance in our traditions, Ma."Khushi teased her mother as she shared a chuckle with her father. They liked riling Nandini up. "Jokes apart," she replied softly, "I have complete faith in you and if Papa and you think he is a nice guy, I have no problem in meeting him, if it's just a meeting that is."

"Of course," her mother promised, "just a meeting Khushi. As said, we will never force you to do things against your will, and we all but expect the same from you."

"That's settled then." Khushi concluded as she stood, tugging the hair behind her ear. "The meeting this Sunday is all I can promise, Ma. And I'll see if you can carry on with the alliance or search for another guy."

***~***~***

So, how is it? Any similarities with life in general?

As for the story, it's common for me to say but still, needed to voice it... the story will be in a slow phase for the first few parts, as it is the foundation for the whole journey. We will see and understand Khushi's life in general before the story takes its turn. So, for your doubts, please let the story unfold for at least few parts.

And now, the never-ending-guessing-game that we all are used to by now regarding my stories. Can you tell me the significance of her name and her cousin's...???? Come on, bring it on...

PPS: Hello all, I thought to have this FF in the blog and already updated first part days ago. However, I was unable to post the blog link here. CHAPTER 2: FEW THINGS TO KNOW ABOUT YOU

20th December, 2010

Hyderabad

"Can you lower that damned volume, Shiva!"

The angry voice greeted her as soon as Khushi entered her area of cubicles - that was separated by a lass curtain wall from the cabins of the higher officials along with conference and meeting rooms - after attending a two-hour meeting with a client, along with her boss. Shaking her head as she, and everyone in the office, used to the temper problems NK suffered. NK a.k.a Nanda Kishore, had a masters degree and specialized in landscape architecture and though he played with natural elements and greenery through his designs, that didn't help calm him down whenever he was working - and a workaholic that he was.

"Gautham can't even hear, NK!"

Shiva snapped back as the rest of them suppressed a smile, paused working as their eyes watched NK and Shiva with amusement. Khushi looked at Gautham who shrugged as if he was used to being trapped between the guys in their usual fights, and smiled. She placed the files on the table of her cubicle and sat on the chair, resting her head against the headrest and watched the on-going commotion.

This was what she liked in the office. The easy banter between the colleagues and the comfort they provided for each other. Unlike the other offices, there was no rivalry among them. They had competitors - a healthy competition that helped an individual to have a professional growth. While Shiva was an Interior Architect, Gautham was the software specialist who works on 3D views and Photoshop for their designs. It might be one of the reasons for them not to have a rivalry, as everyone among them were specialized in a different category with two people in each department and work together to provide a building that not only provide what the user of the building wanted but what the user needed, along with environmental friendly atmosphere.

And her team, as the boss named it, consisted of the three mentioned persons and her. And their work was a continuous cycle. She would plan and design an overall layout of the project as an assistant to their boss - the chief architect - and passed it to Shiva, who provided its interiors, while NK worked on the landscape elements, with Gautham creates the visualization of all the three together. The four not only made a great team but also had a balanced equation off the professional font that made their outcome just as beautiful as their friendship.

"He can't hear," NK snapped again, now pausing his own work as he turned around in his rotating chair, "because he is busy chatting with his girlfriend. I know we need music to let our minds work all long but we don't want to create a live-theatre to do so. Any music with audible volume will do. So stop having loud speakers when you play rock music."

"If you can't see," Gautham jumped in between, his eyes glued on the screen as he rendered the front elevation of a residential house in Photoshop that Khushi needed for another meeting that was supposed to start in an hour, "I'm working, NK. But I have to agree, the music is loud."

Khushi chuckled at the pale face of Shiva, making her presence known to her team as the others turned back to their works, still smiling at their banter. Reaching out for the extension land phone, she dialed to the pantry that was located two stairs down their floor. "Raju, three Tea's and one filter Coffee," she ordered their drinks and turned back to the men who were now waiting for her to speak about her meeting, forgetting about their argument momentarily.

"You are right," she said to Shiva with a sigh, "the client is an ass with a capital A."

Shiva laughed aloud just as NK let out a sigh while rolling his eyes. "Told you so," Shiva replied with a smile. "Neethu Ma'am informed me about his... choosiness... after she recommended him about our firm."

Neethu was an ex-employee in their firm two years ago, when Khushi wasn't even joined the firm, and shifted to the present firm that she was working as a chief architect that was based in Kerala. It was that company that suggested the client about theirs being the best in their city and Khushi couldn't wish more than to get rid of the client. He was a businessman and he wanted to expand his roots here, and for that, he was going to have an office that could house for 250 people. The man had a weakness and seemed to be interested in working with women. That made her become the object of his fantasy for now, which made her work just as much complicated. But she knew she couldn't avoid such male attention, whichever position she was in, and felt it a bit challenging to deal with them.

And Khushi loved challenges.

"So he isn't satisfied with the layout plan." Khushi continued, filling them in,"and want to work out on few particular zones. He insists that we contact him after working out on each zone, and not after two or three."

"How can he say whether he likes it or not without having its surrounding zones?" NK questioned before smiling at her sweetly, "or, can he see the imaginary elements around the zone just by see you explain, Khushi?"

"I'm gonna kill you NK." Khushi threatened, thanking Raju, the pantry boy, for he served their drinks. "For all we know, I might actually show him his place."She replied with a giggle, making the other three chuckle at her words.

The glass door swung open and they turned around, alerted, as their boss stepped in with a file in his hand. "Krishnaa," he called her out, "come to my cabin with Phoenix file." He informed and went on his way without waiting for her.

Khushi sighed in frustration as the guys chuckled. "All the best, Krishnaaa..."Gautham winked at her, exaggerating her name just to tease her as he made his way towards the printer that was located at the one end of their working studio."And enquire with Rahul regarding the next meeting. Is it scheduled for 1' O clock or 4?"

"Sure," she replied while picking up the file, and followed her boss of one year, knowing well what he was about to say.

She found her boss standing at the French window behind his desk, that she used to see him in the same way whenever he was irritated over something. Nothing had changed in the past year. She had joined the firm for her practical training as a part of her academic curriculum for a period of six months and the chief architects, who were five in number including her boss, liked her work and extended a job offer which she gladly accepted. The firm was established ten years ago, by the five friends who completed their masters in various departments of Architecture and had worked hard to reach the present position as one among the five firms in the state, and also young comparing to other four firms, being just in their mid thirties.

"I don't understand what the man wants." She heard the angry tone as he sat on his chair, pointing at the layout sheet that had pencil marks and notes all over it."He's fine with the plan during our last meeting. What would have happened in over a week that Mr. Sanjay wants us to work all over again?"

Khushi smiled as she felt the same irritation within her on their client, she opened her own file as she pointed out. "I don't think we are failing to provide what he needs, Rahul. However, we can't help him if he isn't clear as what he wants."

"I think you are right," he replied as he started pointing out the changes they needed to make. The next hour passed as they worked together.

"We have a meeting with a client on this Thursday," Rahul informed as Khushi made her way out of the cabin, stopping her, "designing a business consultancy office. He's some business research analyst and is helping Abhi's father in his."Rahul informed referring to one of the five friends, "you see, the client is a king of VIP."

"Sure," she replied with a nod, "I'll inform the rest of the guys and will note it down in your schedule."

"It's Vallabh..." Rahul said as he turned his gaze on the computer screen, "Arnav Shri Vallabh from Elites."

"Okay," Khushi noted down the name in their daily entry on the date as she walked out of the cabin, to inform about their new VIP' client to the gang.

Aer Longue

Four Seasons Hotel

Mumbai

"Chivas Regal - 25 and..." He glanced at his company who hear her say "a Res Sea Sunrise."

He waited for the waiter to leave them before he turn to look at the woman again, his eyes boring hers as he tried to guess what was going on in her mind. They had been together enough for him to understand that she was lost in her thoughts. He shook his head mentally - when was he going to learn to try and understand the women he dated? It had always been him to bring the break up conversation and with the atmosphere she presented tonight, this time wasn't any different.

He hated it, he always had, to let any relationship run longer and had been sure he ended things before they take a turn. But this time, he didn't give much of his attention to the woman and now, he was regretting it. What started as a casual fling now brought them to eight long months - something that was beyond his dating standard. Two months, three at the most if the girl was irresistible, his dating chart score board was. He needed to serve his ties with her, and tonight would be that moment, for he was sure about it.

"Not drinking tonight?"

He asked her after a pause, his brow arched in question. He might be a complete asshole, yet, he couldn't bring himself treat a woman as a shit when she hadn't shown her attitude. He drummed his fingers on the table as he watched her sip her water, taking her time to speak. He all but wanted to have some sleep before he'd board a flight early the next morning to his home. Ah home! He mused, a smile spread across his face at the thought. It had been a month since he was staying in Mumbai. Before, he had been travelling once in a month and stayed for over a week but the business call was something that demanded his undivided attention - of course, it didn't stop him from meeting the girl he'd been dating - if he could use the word for the equation they share, that is.

"Nah..." she replied, her voice hoarse than ever and cleared her throat before adding, "I have to meet my parents for dinner in about," she glanced at her Rolex, a white gold coated with diamonds adored in a row, "three hours. Can't risk it with a drink."

"That's one sad story you got." He rolled his eyes, watching the waiter as he placed their drinks. He leaned back on his chair, his legs stretched under the table with his right foot hung loosely over his left. If he had any doubts on where the conversation would lead, her words confirmed them. "I think I'm glad you are here with me even after having plans for the night." He said truthfully. He was indeed glad it was her who called him and the meet. She had said that she would like to spend some time with him before he left for his hometown.

"And I think I'm not happy that you have to leave." She replied calmly, her eyes boring into his. "Again," she added softly at the end.

He groaned and shifted uncomfortably in his seat, the moment was here. "You knew about my travelling life before..."

"Yeah I know," she cut him off, "before I enter into this relationship with you. and we have been together for eight months now... yes, we stay apart all the time, but we do make it up for it when we are together."

"That's not the whole." He stated plainly. "I never let my work come between us, Nandita. We did enjoy sex even when we are apart with all those video calls and..."

He smirked when he saw her flushing as he referred to their active sex life. True, he did enjoy her company. And he would miss her for a while, before he would meet another woman with whom he could spend a month or so.

"You are amazing in that aspect," she whispered as she leaned further, her hands resting on the table as she reached out for his before looking at him. "I don't like to shy away the matter that I wanted to discuss with you tonight, Arnav."

He groaned, his eyes shut as he felt a slight throb between his eyes surfacing, but he didn't make any attempt to sit straight, leaned back as comfortably as he was before. He looked at her, traces of smiles gone as he noticed how serious she was and cursed aloud as he hadn't noticed when he led her to this direction."Yes," he said plainly, his voice as calm and even as ever, "we need to speak. I think it's better if we see other people." He stated as if that was the most natural thing between them.

He watched Nandita blink rapidly, her grip on his hand loosened a little. In any other situations, he would have laughed at her pale expression - something new to the otherwise bold woman. "See other people?" she asked, the surprise still lining at the edge of her voice, "Arnav, I'm here to speak about us. The way we are heading... I'm here to ask if you can meet my parents and here you are asking us to see other people?" The surprise was replaced with anger and Arnav couldn't help but chuckle. Sure, the woman didn't know anything about him.

"The way you are heading..." he said lazily, as he sipped his drink, "I'm sorry if I let you believe that we will be able to take this... relationship... further. And what with meeting your parents, Nandita? The deal's always been clear. You need a man who can keep your bed warm and me, a woman who can satisfy me sexually, as long as it worked for both of us. And now, it's time to explore... other people."

"This is all it comes at the end, isn't it?" Nandita demanded, her hand lost left his, her eyes glaring at him with barely controlled temper and angry tears filled her eyes. "Sex," she snapped at him. "Sex is all you need, isn't it? Why the hell did you take this out of your way with me now, Arnav? You didn't just give me that hope but made me believe that you are indeed serious about us."

"Isn't it all about sex for you, baby?" Arnav questioned with a smile, not taking offence at the way she insulted him. "For every person all over us? at the end, yes, it is what that matters. However, how we look at it and approach it makes whole lot difference. Look, we met, we had it, and we had fun. That is all it is all about, baby."

"You are sick," Nandita hissed as she stood, her hands clutching her purse, "and disgusting. I can't believe you are breaking up with me carelessly. No wonder none of your past relationships worked. Thanks for showing me what emotionless stone you have for a heart, Arnav. Good bye!"

He watched her as she walked out of the longue, and from his life, and let out a silent whoosh. He never understood what women really want. Every single woman that he dated agreed to be in an emotionless relationship with him at the start and by the end, each of them wanted more from him - a promise of forever. The only thing that he wouldn't and couldn't give.

Enjoying his drink alone, he looked at his wrist watch casually to note that it was almost time for her to fell asleep. A smile tugged at the corner of his lips, as always, with the mere thought of his baby and speed-dialed the number and waited for the other person to answer.

"You are coming tomorrow right!"

The cheerful voice greeted her, deepening his smile and he shook his head. For her, he would do anything, and he wasn't willing to spoil that by simply unable to control his urge and desires. He had let a woman have her fair chance of forever with him and that had only resulted a broken relationship and agony.

"Yes, love." He smiled into the phone as he answered, "and I will not leave you alone for this long again."

"Yes yes yes!!! Yes!" He could imagine her jumping up and down her bed, her soft toy in her hands as her little ponytails dance along with her. "You promised you will come back. I know Papa's someone who keeps up his promise. Papa's coming home."

"Yes, my peanut." Arnav smiled contently as he closed his eyes, "Papa's coming back and going to stay with his darling baby."

PS: The first few parts will be mostly on sketching up the characters. When they meet, I can say they will find that spark, but not right away. They will take time to come around. Hope this ll be an interesting ride for you all...
