Part 2
"I hate this movie." Virat finally said after an hour's worth of torture.
"I agree." Maanvi replied and he stared at her. The only reason he had kept quiet was because he thought she had been enjoying it.
"Then why in the world were you watching with such rapt attention?"
"Oh I was trying not to fall asleep."
"Like we did in lectures?"
She nodded and he laughed.
"There was nothing else to do anyway." She shrugged.
Sure there was, a snide voice whispered as images of kissing her filled his head.
"What are you smiling about?" She asked as she saw the lopsided grin on his face.
"Oh.. nothing.. nothing." He replied, looking away, as he tried to wipe the smile off of his face.
"I know that look." She said, as her eyes narrowed and his heart nearly stopped.
"You do?"
"You're such a perv." She said and pulled him by the ear.
"Ow ow ow!! Okay okay!"
"So who was it?" She asked, trying not to laugh.
"Katrina Kaif!" He said, grabbing the first name that popped in his head.
"Ew." She said letting go.
"She's hot." He shrugged.
"And out of reach."
"Well it can be someone else as well..." He said as a devilish gleam appeared in his eyes and he stepped closer.
"No Virat! None of that!" She said, backing away as he turned his collar up.
"Aja ajaaa!" He sang as she turned around and ran, "Main hun pyaar tera!" He tackled her easily and dragged her down, tickling her relentlessly in the process.
They struggled for a bit but as always, he was too strong for her.
"Virat! Bas!" She finally managed to get out, clearly out of breath.
He collapsed besides her, laughing, before being the object of her tiny fists.
"Why do you always do that?" She said, sitting on top of him now, and he simply grinned at her.
"It's good to see you like this."
She started at his answer and he smiled before enclosing her hands in his.
Her gaze strayed towards how they were lying directly above his heart now before forcing herself to look at him again as he addressed her.
"So.. New Year eve's tomorrow... What do you want to do?"
~*************************~
"Virat?"
"Hmmm?"
They were lying on her bed, their thoughts a mixture of nothing and everything, the need to fill the silence with conversation, seldom.
"I forgot to tell you... Vidya is having a party tomorrow."
His instant reaction was a groan.
"I know you hate them but she really wanted us to be there."
"Fine." He muttered.
"Virat?" She said again, after a while.
"Why do you think we're still friends?"
He sat up now, clearly taken aback.
"Why are you even asking?"
"Just like that."
"Well... for a start... I'm amazing..." He said and earned a slap on his arm.
"Say na!"
"I would but you didn't ask the right question Maanvi." He said, lying down again and propping himself up against his elbow.
"Then what is the right question?"
"The right question is why wouldn't we still be friends?"
She smiled at his words and he smiled back.
"I am incapable of cutting you out of my life Maanvi." He said simply.
"Me too." She said.
"Now don't think about this..." He said, flicking her nose gently. "Think about what exactly I'm going to be wearing tomorrow." He finished and it was her turn to groan now.
"Why can't you decide for once!"
"I don't do that. You know I don't do that."
"You're going to drive your wife crazy." She said as she got off the bed.
"That won't happen." He said quietly as she neared the door.
"What?"
"I said that won't happen."
"And how do you know?"
"I just do."
She merely blinked, unsure of how to respond to that before turning away. He watched her leave before letting his head sink into the pillows again and sighed.
So close.
In some ways, he thought, he was much like the child that dearly wanted to be a part of the game but was always too afraid of the dark to really try.
Rohini's words resounded in his mind again and he grimaced.
He could only run for so long... if he kept this up he'd lose her forever and unlike the child this wasn't about a game... this was about his life.
He had to tell her.
~*************************~
"That party was terrible." Virat said as they walked back home. They had always preferred the city at night. It had made for the first real conversation they had had.
"Why did we go to it again?" She asked.
"You're one to talk." He said and she laughed a little at the sarcasm in his tone.
"I'm sorry I dragged you into it."
They walked in silence for a while, the companionable kind, communicating solely through glances and the occasional smile.
"Maanvi?" He suddenly spoke, stopping abruptly.
"Yeah?"
There are moments in your life, which bring with themselves a certain amount of clarity. Like wiping off the mist covering a window pane and truly seeing what lay beyond. These moments are not always ones of high intensity. They can come about in equally subtle ways and when they do, they lend you a kind of strength so that there is no more fear. All there is, is giving in.
For Virat Vadhera, that moment was happening. He didn't understand why, ofcourse... they had just been walking like they did so often but something had shifted within him. Was it a smile? The way she had glanced at him or perhaps even the way the moonlight seemed to play with her hair? He would never know but whatever it was... it had been his undoing. He stood there, hearing the sound of his own heart thump steadily against his chest and in that one brief moment he finally knew, beyond the shadow of a doubt that he had to tell her how he felt and even if she were to reject him, they would survive this. They were Virat and Maanvi afterall. All they had ever known was to stick together.
"Why... why did you say no?" He finally spoke.
"What?"
"Why did you say no to Abhay?" He said turning to look at her, his heart beating faster than usual now, as he waited for her to answer.
Her throat closed up.
"I... He wasn't the guy I want to marry." She finally said.
"Then who is?"
"Why are we talking about...?"
"You know that thing you asked me a few days back?" He said, cutting her across. He spoke quickly and rapidly as though on a time limit.
"Yes?"
"Well I have an answer." He said, his eyes fixated on the ground now.
"Okay?" She asked, looking at him curiously as she tried to discern the expression on his face but it was in the shadows.
"Marry you. I want to marry you." He said, smiling as he looked up, so that her first thought was how she had never seen him smile like that before. Her own body ofcourse, seemed to be completely rid of air as his words registered.
"What?"
"That's my answer." He said with a shrug, positively grinning now.
"You want to..."
"I want to marry you." He said again. "I've always wanted to marry you." There was tenderness now, both in his voice and his eyes as though he was drinking into the sight of something sacred.
Maanvi simply blinked a little, not sure if this were even happening.
"Why... why didn't you ask?" She said finally.
"I just... I don't know... I'm asking now aren't I?"
"It's why I said no." She said softly, more to herself than him.
"You're saying no?" He had died. He was sure of it.
"What... no... Not you! Him... Abhay I mean..."
"What are you trying to say?" He asked, clearly confused now and something flickered in her eyes.
"That's not the point." Her voice hardened as she directed him with a look that told him he was clearly in a lot of trouble.
"The point is... What took you so long?"
"It hasn't been that long it has only been... 8 years." He finished lamely.
"And what were you doing in all that time? Bhajjan keerthan?" She pushed him.
"That's not fair. We were always dating different people." He said as he took a step back.
""You mean you were." She snapped.
"Oh yeah? I was the one who was dating Abhay, Rohan and what was the name of that last one..."
"That's only 3. You've dated 7 girls in the past 8 years!"
"I didn't realize we were keeping score."
"8 years Virat. We have known each other for 8 years and I was in love with you for atleast 5 of them and you... You..." Her hands curled into fists as she struggled to find the rights words for the crime he had committed.
"How was I supposed to know you were in love with me?!" He said defiantly, struggling against his instincts to run for cover instead.
Her face fell into her hands at his words.
"You were my best friend Virat! Who else was I supposed to be in love with?" She cried.
"It's not a rule." He muttered and her eyes flashed dangerously.
"It is. With you and me, it will always be a rule."
"Well you didn't say anything either!"
"Well I..." She hesitated for the first time.
"You see? Both of us clearly suck at this."
"I suppose." She muttered finally.
The seconds passed and they simply looked at each other until he finally spoke.
"So... so does this mean you are saying yes?" He asked nervously.
"No!" She flared up again. "Absolutely not! You can wait for another ten years until..."
She was still pushing him and all he could was smile at her words instead.
"What are you grinning about?" She said, clearly furious that her rejection had had no impact on him whatsoever.
"This."
And then, just like that, he was kissing her. She moaned softly before wrapping her arms around his neck and kissing him back.
"Happy New Year, Maanvi Chaudhary." He whispered against her lips and she smiled between kisses.
"Happy New Year."
It was going to be one hell of a year... or to put it more appropriately, he thought as he pulled her closer to himself, the rest of their lives.
