Chapter 2
Sakshi was sitting staring outside near her window. She didn't even know what was happening around her. She also didn't even hear someone entering her room, and then the door closing.
"How is she doing now?" Arjun asked. Since the last week, he had come here everyday to know about Sakshi. And like always, he was told that she was sitting and staring outside.
"Nothing has changed!" Sakshi's mum said with sad eyes. She couldn't see her daughter like this, but she didn't know what to do.
"Why did he do this to her? She really loved him!" she said angrily to Arjun.
"I know Aunty, but we cant change what already happened! She has to accept this truth!" Arjun said apologetically.
"But you have to know why he did this! You are his elder brother after all!" Sakshi's mum persisted.
"Sorry Aunty, I also don't know anything! Aunty, I think you should take Sakshi away for some time, out of this city, somewhere she'd be able to forget everything!" Arjun said.
"Where can I take her? Besides she hardly leaves her room! And people haven't really helped. My daughter has become the talk of the town now. She was ditched on her wedding day. Every day phones keep coming why the groom ran away!" Sakshi's mum replied back.
"It happens, and soon they'd get other news to talk about!" Arjun replied angrily.
"But that doesn't change the fact that no one will marry her! Or if she'll ever want to marry or trust someone again!" she said sadly.
"She's a nice girl, and also a very beautiful girl. I'm sure she'll get someone to marry her in her future!" Arjun said with a strange smile.
"Let's hope so! Let's hope so!"
"I also hope so," Arjun murmured to himself and went away.
He entered his SUV, and went to work as usual. He didn't know what to do. He had never felt so much helpless.
Sometime the worst thing can be done with the best intention. And whatever was happening with Sakshi was the proof of this completely.
This pattern continued for a long time. Two months had passed, but Sakshi hadnt started to laugh at all. She tried her best to hide her pain infront of her mother, but only she knew how she felt inside. Even till now she could feel people's pitying eyes on her whenever she walked on the road, or be it at her workplace.
It was almost three months now, but still Sakshi hadn't forgotten anything. But throughout everything, she was really in debt of Arjun. He was constantly in their lives on a daily basis. He had turned to be her best friend till now. But with his presence, she also never managed to forget Rohit, his brother who left her in her mandap.
And like always, Sakshi's mother never stopped her campaign in finding a good groom for Sakshi. Every week she would show Sakshi pictures of prospective grooms. But Sakshi wasn't interested at all. She would turn down each boy.
"Arjun she isn't accepting at all!" Sakshi's mum said one evening while Sakshi was still out for work.
"I have accepted defeat now," she said.
"Arre Aunty, why do you accept defeat? Give her some more time! I'm sure everything will be fine!" Arjun was saying while sipping his chai.
"She doesn't even share anything with me! has she told you anything yet?" she asked back.
Arjun thought about the time he had spent with Sakshi. Though he managed to make her forget things at time, he hadn't managed to really make her confide. But he wasn't going to accept defeat. He was thinking about this, when they heard the front door open, and a crying Sakshi passing by in a hurried way. Both followed her, and before she could lock her door, Arjun put his foot in. She left the door and went to throw her body on the bed.
Her mum run to her crying form, while Arjun could only stare from a distance.
"Kya hua Sakshi?" her mum was saying. Sakshi got up and started to cry on her mother's lap. Both could only wait helplessly for her to calm down.
Finally after some time, which seemed like hours, Sakshi started to speak.
"Mama, why did he leave me? Mein itni buri hoon kya?" she asked sadly.
"Of course nahin Sakshi, why do you feel like this?" her mum asked while caressing her daughter's head gently.
"Did anyone say anything?" her mum asked.
Sakshi's eyes started to fill up again, "He said I was a bad girl. I heard some people talking about me! They were discussing about me! Saying that I must have done something bad, otherwise why would Rohit leave me?" She got up and looked at her mother.
"Did I really do anything?" she asked like a small child. Sakshi's mother was happy finally Sakshi was talking about that event.
"Of course not Sakshi, you are a gem!" her mother said and kissed her forehead.
Sakshi hid her head back in her mother's lap, "They also said that no one would ever want to marry me!"
"Rubbish, who said that? Why wouldn't anyone wanna marry you?" her mother was saying while looking at Arjun for help.
Arjun finally came closer, and he sat on the other side of the bed.
"Of course not Sakshi, any man would be happy marrying you. In fact they'd love you," he replied gently.
"Lies, you both are telling me lies. If I really was good, Rohit would never have left me!" Sakshi shouted getting up from her bed.
"Sakshi, sometime bad things happen. We can hardly control everything in our life!" Arjun said.
"I don't believe you! No matter what I do, everywhere I go, the fact I was left at my mandap will also follow me! and even if a boy agrees to marry me, he's bound to ask the truth nah! And what truth can we even say, when we don't even know why he left me!" Sakshi said completely shattered.
"If he really cares for you and loves you, he'll accept you as you are! Beside anyone knowing you can't ever find any fault in you!" Arjun replied gently.
"Really! Anyone knowing me for who I am, will accept me?" Sakshi asked not believing anything.
"Yes Sakshi," both her mother and Arjun said at same time.
"It's easier said than done!" Sakshi retorted and turned her back towards them.
"Sakshi you have to accept the truth, and live with your past! For how long will you lament yourself and cry?" Arjun suddenly asked looking very angry.
"My past, or at least what is unknown to me, will always haunt me! Do you even realize how many taunts me and mama had to hear after this marriage broke! Do you even know that everyone talks on me behind my back, do you even know that some have even misbehaved because of it! Yet you ask me to live, what the hell have I been doing till now then if not face everything?" Sakshi screamed at him.
"Go out, fall in love and marry! That's what I want you to do!" Arjun said back.
"Really if you care so much for my marriage, and since you already know me since so long, why don't you marry me yourself?" Sakshi retorted back shocking everyone.
"After all it was your brother who left me at the mandap, why not sacrifice yourself and marry me?" Sakshi continued completely out of control now, and turned to see Arjun's shocked face.
"See it's easier said than done! Even you don't wanna marry a girl like me!" Sakshi said sarcastically and started to laugh.
"I'll marry you," Arjun said loud enough to get through her fake laughter.
This time it was Sakshi's turn to be shocked.
"What did you say?" Sakshi asked not believing her ears.
"I said I'll marry you! Like you said it was my brother who brought shame and hurt you. So it's my duty to marry you. And anyway I guess we should have married that day itself on that mandap itself," Arjun said looking straight in her eyes.
"You have gone crazy! I was just joking," Sakshi said.
"I'm not!" Arjun said in a determined voice. Sakshi turned towards her mother for help, but her mother looked happy at this turn of events.
"I'm not going to marry you ever!" Sakshi said and went away from her room.
