Chapter 9A: Poking the Sleeping Dragon
Aakash sat at the table, fidgeting and playing with his food. He kept glancing at Arnav, who as usual, lost in his own world, didn't notice. Anjali threw questioning glances at him, and when Aakash didn't respond, at Payal. Payal just shrugged. She knew that he had planned to call Saakshi today, but she wasn't aware of the outcome of that conversation. "Hello Hi Bye Bye Aakash Bitwa, why you ghooring at Arnav Bitwa," asked Mamaji. Aarav sniggered, and NK hid a smile. "Huh," Arnav exclaimed as he noticed everyone starting at him. "Everything ok?" he asked. "Di," he turned to her with a slightly panicked look on his face. "Everything's ok Chote," she said. "Aakash is just worried about work." She looked pointedly at Aakash. "Uh, Bhai, there's something I wanted to ask you." He cleared his throat nervously. Arnav looked up at him, and noticed for the first time how nervous Aakash was. He raised his eyebrow at Aakash and questioned him with his eyes.
"Uh, Bhai, there's this deal." Aakash started it. "Handle it," the ASR voice commanded. "Get Aman to help with whatever you need." Arnav almost looked down again when Aakash responded, forcing Arnav to pay attention. "Bhai, Aman can't help much. I mean, Aman can help, but we need you." Aakash threw a panicked look at Anjali who stared back wide-eyed at him. "Uh, I mean, we need to pitch the idea to you." Aakash trailed off nervously. "Pitch?" Arnav's expression was incredulous. "What sort of pitch?" Aakash looked down. "Uh, Bhai, there's a potential new client, well partner. An expansion potentially. I wanted to at-least explore it and get your input." Arnav glared at him. "Aakash, we don't have the time for this, you know what your responsibilities are. There will be no pitch." Aakash looked beseechingly at Anjali, who understood right away that her plan was now underway. She felt a shiver pass through her body, and a strange lightness in her heart. "Are Chote," she started teasingly. "How boring you've become." Arnav glared at her, then glanced at Aarav, who was staring at Anjali with disbelief. His Bua was teasing Dad? Needless to say, teasing ASR was something that Aarav had not witnessed for a long time.
"Chote, why are you making a rash decision now without knowing anything? Just go to the meeting and listen to what Aakash has to propose." A nerve twitched on Arnav's face, as he felt trapped in a corner. "I don't have time for a new project," he ground out. "Chote, an hour meeting is not going to take you away from your important work. And regarding the project, if we go in that direction, you can make sure it doesn't interfere with, well, other things." Anjali looked over subtly at NK, who caught her eye and gave a small nod. "Nanav mere bhai, I know you are all busy and all you know, but Aakash bhai, he's really excited about this deal. He was telling me about it, you know. And he's done all this kayaari for the meeting. All his kayaari will be wasted." Arnav looked up stunned, and before he could say anything, Payal's soft voice responded. "Tayaari, NK bhai." She gazed serenely at NK who smiled back at her. "Yea, that one." He smiled at her with a soft glow in his eyes. Arnav looked at them incredulously. This was the first time since Khushi had left that NK had done his silly Hindi slip-up in front of him, and Khushi's voice was chiming in his head. He heard all the times she had corrected NK and laughed with him.
The whole family felt the air shift slightly in that moment. Nani had a dreamy look on her face, NK and Payal remained locked in each other's gaze, and Anjali had tears in her eyes as she looked at her brother. Arnav felt something constrict in his heart. He got up, noisily and started leaving the dining room. "Chote," Anjali's voice called him. "The meeting?" Arnav looked back, his eyes seeking Aakash. He remembered what NK said, that Aakash had seemed excited. He felt a pinch of guilt as he realized that Aakash may have sacrificed much in terms of career satisfaction and growth these last two years. Maybe he owed it to his brother. "Set the meeting for next Wednesday afternoon," he instructed Aakash. He glared at them all one more time before striding away.
All the siblings held their breath until Arnav had disappeared from sight. Then collectively, they all burst out into excited laughter. Nani looked at them and smiled wanly, while Mami muttered hello his to herself before taking off. Aarav was the most stumped of all. He looked at NK who was chortling, and then at his Bua who had tears streaming down her face. Aakash looked like he had just run a marathon and Payal had the widest smile he had ever seen on her face. He stood up uncertainly. "Uh, I'll be in my room." The madness continued as he left. He entered his room and flopped on the bed, confusion still evident on his face. He was convinced that they had all lost their minds. His mind caught a specific memory, and he sniggered. "Kayaari, really? How dumb are you NK Bhai." He continued sniggering.
Standing outside the room, with a glass of juice in his hands, having just left the scene in the dining room, Hari Prakash felt tears come into his eyes as he felt real joy expressed on the faces of those he loved, for the first time in years. He turned away from Aarav's room, wiped away his tears and strode off humming a tune...the words mausam, suhana and bahana coming out in soft mumbles, as though a distant memory resurfacing back after a long sleep.
