I have seen an acid burnt woman who used to work in an NGO where i was an intern. With all my sympathy and respect to her and to her resilience I must admit, it wasn't easy for me to behave normally with her. I remember, I couldn't look at her properly. I used to feel troubled just by looking at her face.. I, of course, used to hate myself for that..

Its not easy for normal people to behave normally with acid victims. The effect of acid attack is so damaging... I don't know if an acid thrower have ever looked at a face he/she burnt. If they don't repent their act, they just cannot be sane!

So what I feel, more counselling is needed to the family and friends of the victims.. We should definitely encourage the victims to fight back .. tell them that they should not give up, but what is more important is the education to others in the society who needs to stand by the victims..

Good to know about the judgement of the Supreme court. In Bangladesh the law is more stringent. Acid throwers could be awarded with capital punishment here and sale of acid in normal shops are also banned.

But the problem still remains un-addressed.. because those who want acid, they manage to buy it anyway.
Having said this, i definitely appreciate the SC decision .. as it could be taken as a first step toward a better situation.

I cannot conclude this post without expressing my heart-felt gratitude for bringing this issue here through a fiction..You have definitely reached a huge audience here! THANKS A MILLION!

That is so true, thanks for sharing it with us. Its difficult for people to see such victims, not because they are disfigured. Personally I found it difficult because it made me feel helpless, made me feel guilty that i could do nothing to help that woman. It is also a reminder that even I could be on the receiving end of something like that. But slowly I realised that the best way i could help the victim was by looking at her face and telling her that she is beyond her face and what it represents.

Speechless thats what i am right now.
What do i say K about this wonderful piece of writing.
I am so glad that you wrote about this cause...made me wonder about all the times i have read this piece of information in the newspaper and just moved on to the next news after feeling a little sad and sorry for the victim.

Such things always happen to some unknown person, never to your loved ones, thats what u would like to believe. But i can't help but ponder today as to what i would have done if this were to happen to someone i know and love. So scary.
My heart goes out to each and every women who has been a victim of this madness.

This Khushi was able to recover with a Arnav by her side who was her anchor but what about those hundreds of Khushi's who have no Arnav by their side.
When you read something like this it makes me more grateful and thankful to God for blessing me with such a wonderful life.

Thank you for making me realise what a blessing my life has been.

a remarkable tribute to the ladies who took this step, instead of wallowing in their sufferings, sufferings of magnificent scale, they took it upon themselves to fight for justice and contributed their life to improve living conditions for women, i salute them for treading on a difficult path in a country where woman are still considered secondary to their male counterpart...these unsung heroes, is the reason why there is still hope for the world

besides the commendable actions being taken by the government to prevent such cases in the future, i hope there is much more being done for the betterment of the lives of the victims than just the compensation money, maybe a trust fund can be developed where the funds can be used for reconstructive surgeries of those who are not fortunate enough
