Chapter VII: Sonic Boom

"Are you sure this is a good idea?" Arnav froze mid-step the file in his hand dangerously clutched in his fists as they tightened around poor unknowing papers.

"I beg your pardon?" He asked his new second executive assistant calling on all the patience he could ever muster.

"I asked-"

"I know what you asked," he said slamming the papers on table, annoyance creeping in his voice. "Why do you think this isn't a good idea?"

Arnav was taking over one of their subsidiaries and merging with Raizada industries when the output from the said subsidiary didn't meet the throughput as expected by the contract. Arnav had asked her to pass this along his legal team and get it done immediately. Khushi being Khushi had forgotten her brain-to-mouth filter at home on the first day of her work and blurted out first thing that came to mind.

She ruffled few papers in her hand. "Those people are struggling to make the demand, and it isn't because they are incapable or anything but because they are lacking in technology which decidedly give your industries an added advantage. Instead of merging with Raizada Industries and make them lose their identity, you can offer them new machineries which would anyway help you eventually and give them the space they deserve."

"And I should do this because…" Arnav was a business man through and through. Risks and rewards, was all he thought.

"It's because they deserve second chance and a helping hand." Khushi stood her ground and looked at his eyes squarely and unknowingly challenged him.

"You have the recovery plan as proposed by the subsidiary in your hand, don't you?" He asked leaning across his bookcase and stuffing his hands in his pockets. Khushi nodded and pulled it out. "Whatever you just said is quite logical, do you see that as one of their recovery proposals?"

Khushi bit her lip and shook her head after quickly giving the said section a once over.

"Why do you think that?" Arnav asked. He felt he was teaching college student about real life, things outside what textbooks taught and their academic professors believed to be real.

"I don't know," she said slowly.

Arnav smiled without humor. "How do you expect me to help people when they fail to recognize their own potential and ask for help or at least brainstorm for possible solutions with us?" There were thousand things Khushi could respond to the argument with but nothing seemed substantial at the moment to present an alternative. Not to mention the fact that Arnav was progressively losing his patience.

"Get it done." Arnav said in a final tone.

"Yes sir." She said plainly somehow annoying him even more. He wasn't annoyed with her inquisition but the tone she had taken with him. It was accusatory and touched a raw nerve. His fairly thick skin had betrayed him as her implication made him scratch his skin.

It was three weeks to date since she first insinuated his aggressiveness as being a heartless bas***d.

"I didn't know you were our priest's daughter," Arnav said digging into his lunch heartily. He lunched with both his assistants when he was in country and wasn't in any lunch meetings – when all combined was a once in a fortnight occurrence.

"Were you expecting me to tell you that?" Khushi asked honestly. Arnav's verbal expectations were something but his implicit expectations of things not told aloud rendered her speechless and irritated. The man would simply raise an eyebrow elegantly and scoff as if to say "Oh, I thought you knew how."

"I was just surprised, really." Arnav waved his hand as if it was an unimportant detail.

"Your father is a priest?" Aman, who was sitting on her adjacent asked, surprised at this information.

Khushi nodded. "Yes. He used to be one before and then he quit being a priest and started a sweet shop – the traditional one. And now he is back to being priest." Khushi explained more than necessary as usual.

"Why did he quit in between?" Arnav's interest was piqued. He even ignored the continuous buzzing of his phone. He sighed at the sight of his two assistants staring at his phone. "Quit it. It's my grandmother harassing me to do something at home tomorrow."

Arnav felt relieved when the two relaxed a little. "My father had a crisis of faith once. It shook him to the point of taking a break from priesthood and concentrate on other mode of earning an income. I guess he is now rediscovering his forgotten faith."

"Aman, her father is a scholar like no other I've met my entire life. He is such a breath of fresh air that going to temple now doesn't seem all that bad." Arnav said honestly. Khushi felt pride bubbling in chambers of her heart at the generous praise of her usually stoic boss. "He spoke about chaos theory and astrology in the same sentence and I couldn't help but listen to him intently." Khushi felt her neck warm when Arnav continued.

She always tends to forget that Aman and Arnav were old friends even before Arnav became what he was today.

"You sound as if you have a crush," Aman snorted. Arnav rolled his eyes. Khushi choked on asparagus and coughed. Aman patted her back and handed her a cup of water. Arnav openly glared at Aman for making an inappropriate comment in front of their new employee.

"Here, drink this." Aman said. Khushi grabbed the drink and drowned it in one go, her face red and eyes watery.

"You like her." Arnav told Aman in a hushed whisper pointing to Khushi. Aman stared at his boss-friend. Sometimes Arnav could be a real douchebag. That's all it took for Khushi as she excused herself and ran to the closest bathroom.

"And you are an idiotic jackass." Aman sighed.

"I am not an idiot Aman." Arnav said seriously.

Aman stared at Arnav. Trust him to pick on the incorrect noun.

"Besides, you shouldn't be too obvious with your feelings." Arnav added. "You scared the poor girl away."

"Just eat your damn lunch." Aman grumbled earning a hearty laugh from his boss. He was too irritated to call him his friend now.

Love the Convo among the trio - even I didn't remember that aman and arnav were buddies - loved their lunch meet - hmmm, excited to know how this is going to move forward
