Music, dancing and Khushi went hand in hand, for as long as she could remember her feet never remained still, she loved dancing. The memory of music playing through the walls of her childhood home was something that stayed with her all the time. She could almost see the image of her parents and herself dancing, a norm in their household. After the accident that claimed her parents, she tried to abandon music and dancing, something responsible for so many memorable moments with her parents. Thankfully her Garima maasi which she fondly called amma now, explained to her that music and dancing were the strings that tied her to her parents and it was very special therefore she should never give up what made her heart happy. Since that moment Khushi followed her heart, welcoming music and dance with all of her. It was a part of her soul, something she would carry till the end of time.
She was eager to perform at Anjali and Vihaan's sangeet, the atmosphere reminded her of Akash and Payal's sangeet where she performed. That was one of the most memorable nights because Arnav had joined her on stage and performed with her, making her score increase which led to the Gupta family winning the friendly competition. That night, she had won the Natraj murti from Nani, but aside from that she had gained something else, Arnav. Without saying a word, his actions proved that no matter what, whenever she needed him, he would always be there for her.
A smile grew on her face as she looked over at her husband holding their little girl's hands as she danced around in the crowd. Khushi could not help but think about how her daughter reminded her of herself, they both loved music and dancing so much. She hoped that one day she would share with her daughter about how much Sakshi's nana and nani loved dancing and music.
Arnav chuckled at his little girl as she did thumkas to a song, she was a mini sanka devi just like her mother and he would have it no other way. His daughter caught his attention with a toothy smile; he returned it and held her hands as they danced to the music. If someone would have told Arnav that his future self would be dancing in such a casual way at a sangeet with his daughter, he would have probably laughed, scratch that, most likely would have glared at that person. But now, all these years later, this moment felt like the most natural thing in the world, he was a father, his little girl's father and he would do everything to be the best father for her, because she deserved it, her innocence and sweetness was meant to be loved and cherished.
He looked up and saw his wife smiling as she made her way towards them, he wrapped one hand around the small of her back and pulled her close. "I think our daughter loves to make me dance to her tunes... just like her mother..." Khushi chuckled and took Sakshi into her arms. "As far as I remember you said you danced with me, not to my tunes."
He smirked as he remembered the exact moment he had said that. He had said it after their performance in the guest room at Akash and Payal's sangeet. "I-" Their conversation was interrupted as Lavanya called all the couples near the stage. Sakshi happily leapt into Akash's arms as Arnav and Khushi walked towards the other couples.
Lavanya held a bowl that contained different chits and instructed each couple to choose a chit. Each chit held a number which relayed the order in which they were going to dance for the sangeet.
As the first couple began dancing Khushi looked at their number, it was number 10, she pouted, it would take forever to reach them. Arnav chuckled at her childishness, "You're so impatient..." A memory flashed before her eyes as she heard his words.
She had been trying relentlessly to convince him to dance with her at the sangeet, tonight she decided to try again but using another method; one that she was certain would be fruitful. She looked at the shut bathroom door, hearing the shower still running she hurriedly moved to her cupboard to search for something.
Arnav entered the room, his towel hanging low on his waist, the room was completely dark. "Khushi?" He called out as he walked forward into the pool of darkness.
A stray gleam of light entered their room from the poolside, which was when he saw her standing in front of their bed. Draped in a deep red lingerie piece she looked exquisite. He covered the space between them but before he could say something he felt her hands at the knot of his towel.
"What are you doing?" He asked with a raised eyebrow, with the full intention of teasing her.
She trailed a finger over his scar under his eyebrow, "The obvious...seducing my husband..."
His eyes filled with desire, "Ahh... I like where this is going." As he leaned in to kiss her, she pulled back, crossing her arms, "On one condition... first agree to what I want. Dance with me at the sangeet."
He glared, masking the glint of amusement he felt rising, "Khushi you know I don't dance..." He added as an afterthought, "in front of the family..."
She gritted, "You did once! At Payal and Akash jiju's sangeet, then why not tonight?"
He turned to the side, "That was because..."
She interrupted him, "Say yes to the dance and..." She pointed to the red lace lingerie she had on specifically for the task of convincing him to dance.
He looked at her, there was no way he could keep his hands off her tonight, "Fine! You win...I'll dance!" He pulled her flush against him.
"You're so impatient..." She murmured as he laid her on the bed.
Seeing the way her cheeks flushed, he knew she was remembering what had transpired last night. He whispered into her ear, "You do realise that I was going to say yes regardless of your seduction right..."
Her eyes widened to the new information her husband had fed her. She turned to face him, "What?"
He winked at her and said as a matter of fact. "I had already made up my mind to dance with you. I was just waiting to see what methods my wife would conjure up to convince her stubborn husband."
Her mouth hung low, "Haww... Arnav Singh Raizada you- urgh!"
Somehow the half hour passed while they were immersed in their conversation and it was finally their turn. Arnav Singh Raizada dancing with his wife was not something people saw every day, actually not at all, therefore everyone in the hall had their eyes glued on them.
Tere Sang Yaara, Khush Rang Bahaara
Alongside You my beloved, my world is a colourful place
Tu Raat Deewani, Main Zard Sitaara
You're like a crazy night, I'm like a shining (yellow) star
O Karam Khudaya Hai, Tujhe Mujhse Milaya Hai
It's the benevolence of God that he has made You meet me
Tujhpe Marke Hi Toh, Mujhe Jeena Aaya Hai
After dying on You, I've learnt the art of living
They swayed to the tunes of Tere Sang Yaara, the crowd cheering for them didn't matter, no else but they mattered in those few minutes they were on stage. Their love, their sacrifices, and their happiness - every emotion was felt and expressed as their dance spoke for them.
The sangeet was a huge success and a memorable night as everyone definitely felt their limbs paining the next morning but that did not deter them from preparing in full swing for the next rituals, the haldi in the morning and finally the wedding later in the afternoon.
The haldi had ended a few minutes ago and Arnav had slipped away from downstairs and had hurriedly changed into a suit. He looked at his watch for the second time, he was officially late. Dammit! He had had to schedule a last minute meeting due to unforeseen circumstances, due to some important foreign clients who had flown in to meet him personally. It was only a matter of an hour and it was unavoidable.
Just as he was about to walk out of the room, he bumped into Khushi. His quick reflex saved her fall as he curled his arm around her waist, pulling her against his chest.
He shifted her hair from her face and loosened his hold on her, "Are you okay?"
She nodded and opened her eyes, "I'm fine..." Her eyes widened as she realized what she had done, "I'm sorry... I..."
Confused at her sudden apology, he looked down to where her eyes were fixated. There were two handprints imprinted with haldi paste smeared across his suit.
He opened his mouth and looked up at her, "Khushi-"
She quickly rambled, "I'll get another suit out for you...hold on" before she disappeared inside the room.
He pulled out his phone and dialed a number, "Aman I'll be there in half hour, start the presentation in the meantime..."
A rare sight, a rare sight indeed is what Akash thought as he walked through the corridor and saw his brother with two handprints of haldi paste on his suit.
Akash chuckled as he walked up to his brother, with amusement laced in his voice he said, "Bhai if you wanted to take part in the haldi you could have just said so you know!"
Arnav threw a glare at him, but his expression quickly changed when he saw Payal within an earshot of them. Arnav called out to his sister in law, "Payal my brother seems a little jealous...ahem" Arnav winked as he walked into his room, from the corner of his eye, he saw Akash receive a tap on his chest from his wife.
After a successful meeting, Arnav returned home feeling much at ease compared to the tension before the meeting. He ensured all of the preparations were running smoothly before he slipped away from the commotion of the ground level of Shantivan.
Arnav entered his sister's bedroom and saw her standing in front of the mirror, putting on the remainder of her bridal jewellery. Vihaan's parents had gifted the jewellery to Anjali to wear on the wedding day. She was wearing a lengha that he had designed months prior to the marriage announcement. While designing it he had hoped his sister would get the chance to wear it whenever she decided to get married. His heart swelled with happiness seeing the bright smile on her face. Her happiness meant the world to him, finally she was getting her share of happiness.
He walked up behind her, holding her shoulders, "Di..."
She stopped what she was doing and turned around, "Chotte?" She chided him, "If there was any work, you could have called me!"
He frowned, "Di it's your wedding, the bride doesn't work on her wedding day, besides can't I come here to spend some time with you?"
She cupped his face lovingly, "Of course Chotte, why not."
They walked over to the bed and sat down. He took her hands into his and held it on his lap, "Di I love you so much"
She smiled at him, "I love you too Chotte"
He looked out at the poolside, a turmoil of emotions going through him, "After everything we've been through, I think we are stronger than ever! When Ma left, you took over, you never made me feel that we were orphaned. With everything that happened in the past year, I think we got even closer. I'm used to having you here all the time, I'm really going to miss you Di."
Anjali smiled sadly, "I will miss you too Chotte...I am so glad that I get to be your sister. It's been a joy seeing you grow from a little boy into a man with your own family. You're a husband and a father. I'm so proud of the man you are today." She couldn't hold back her tears, she leaned forward and wrapped her arms around her brother.
Khushi entered her bedroom, so many thing were running through her mind, she didn't want to forget anything, she felt her stomach gurgle. Not now! Before she could take another step, she started feeling light headed. She touched her temple as she blinked a couple times, trying to see through her blurry vision.
Arnav had just walked into the room when he spotted his wife, "Khu-" His words ceased as he saw her eyes drooping and her body swaying. He ran towards her, pulling her into his arms before she fell. He quickly laid her unconscious form on the bed and sprinkled some water from the glass on the nightstand. "Khushi...Khushi..."
When he saw her stir slightly, he felt a huge weight being lifted off his chest. He helped her sit up and held the glass against her mouth for her to drink the water. He caressed her cheek, "Are you okay? What-"
She nodded, "With all the preparations and everything, I forgot to eat. I didn't even realise when the time passed."
He sighed, "Khushi there's so many people to help with everything, don't exert yourself. You know you have to have your meals on time. That's it, I'm not letting you out of my sight for the remainder of the evening."
She tried to protest, "Arnavji..." He reprimanded her with his glare. She pouted giving in to his demand, "Fine... but how am I to explain why my husband won't leave my side, everyone will call you a johru ka gulaam..." She chuckled.
He winked, "What's wrong with being called that..." He encircled his arms around her neck, "Especially with a wife like you... why not?"
A blush coloured her cheeks as she shook her head at his words.
He flicked her nose and got up, "I'll get something for you to eat, don't move from this bed Mrs Raizada!"
She bit her lip and nodded, "As you say husband..."
Khushi wore an orange and purple lengha while Arnav complimented her with a cream coloured kurta with a hint of orange, while his scarf was purple. Sakshi wore a purple and orange lengha matching her parents, it was the cutest little picture. As promised, Arnav did not let Khushi out of his sight during the wedding ceremony which was quite easy considering Sakshi wanted both her mummy and daddy at her side. By this rate, Khushi was sure that she would have a permanent red hue on her cheek with all the teasing looks she was receiving from everyone.
The wedding was beautiful, Mami and Mamaji had done Anjali's kanya dhyan since they gave picked up the pieces of her broken heart and tried to give her as much love as they could have. Khushi happily tied the ghat bandhan, binding her sister in law and brother in a union. Khushi was the reason that they had met and they were forever grateful to and for her. After an emotional goodbye as the daughter of the house left, the festivities quickly wrapped up and everyone retreated to the backyard for a hot cup of chai on the cold Delhi night, alleviating the ache everyone had as well as the fatigue.
It had been around an hour since Khushi had come upstairs to put Sakshi down for the night. She turned off the light in Sakshi's room and shut the door, making her way into her own room.
Ever since Khushi was a little girl she wanted to be married in a grand affair like the films she used to watch, a wedding where she looked and felt very much like a bride. In reality, her marriage was quite different from her imagination. They got married due to a circumstance, there was no pandit, neither a sacred fire nor any pheres, what they did have though was a quiet registered marriage at the office of the marriage registrar, with the necessary garlands, sindoor, mangalsutra and wedding witnesses, Aman and the photographer he had arranged on short notice.
Khushi caressed the photo frame on her nightstand; the photographer had asked Arnav to put his arm around her waist and for both of them to smile. They did as they were told, Arnav because he wanted material proof of their happy married life and Khushi because she just wanted to follow the photographer's instructions.
Despite having a wedding nothing like she had wanted, she cherished their wedding, it was special in its own way. Since they met each other, they did everything differently anyways, their marriage was no exception.
Arnav walked into the room to see his wife in deep thought as she looked at their wedding photo. He cleared his throat and sat beside her, "Penny for your thought..."
She smiled and leaned against his arm, "I was just thinking about our wedding day...our anniversary is coming up."
He nodded, "Our third ..." He reached for their wedding photo, "It's the first time we're going to be together to celebrate it."
He interlocked his fingers with hers, "I plan on making every bit of it special for you, for us."
She looked up at him and kissed his inviting lips. "I love you."
He pulled her into his arms, "As do I my love."
