Chapter 23

Arnav shifted the curtains, exposing the sunlight to the pastel room. He removed yesterday's bouquet of roses and replaced it with a fresh bouquet of carnations. He sighed as he sat down on the chair next to her bed. He moved a strand of hair from her face and clutched her hand, it was cold. He stroked her hand, trying to feel the warmth that was once there. It still felt cold. He leaned against the chair as he gazed at her sleeping form. He began their routine, he spoke about the previous day, Sakshi's new activities and how everyone was at home. It always hit him hard when he spoke with her like that, no interruptions, no crazy antics, no rebuttals, no nothing.

"Please wake up baby." A tear streamed down his face as he kissed her hand.

A nurse came in, "Mr Raizada, I'm sorry to disturb you, I just need to check her vitals."

He smiled and got up, "It's okay, go right ahead."

He shoved his hands into his pockets and looked out the shut glass window. His palms reached out to the raindrops that trickled against the glass from the outside. The weather had started to change, what started off as a sunny morning, now grey clouds adorned the sky. All he could think off were the lines, you are my sunshine, my only sunshine, you make me happy when the clouds are grey.' He tilted his head to look at his Khushi, he glanced at her monitor, everything was stable. His only hope was that things would be better, that once again he would hear the tinkling laughter that emanated from her, along with her sweet voice which was like his favourite song track and of course those pair of hazel coloured eyes that barred into his soul.

Once the nurse exited the room, he walked towards the bed. "Have a good day sweetheart." He kissed her forehead and gave her one last glimpse before he left the hospital room.

Khushi opened her eyes just as she heard the curtains shift revealing the sun from the poolside. She stretched her arms as she sat up on the bed, "Good morning..." she said with a smile as she saw her husband looking out to the poolside.

He turned suddenly as he heard her voice, "I didn't mean to wake you."

She glanced at the clock and shook her head, "It's okay... th-" She stopped talking and narrowed her eyes at her husband, he was trying to hide his face from her. "Arnavji?" He shut the curtains, darkening the room once again.

She called out to him again, "Arnavji..."

He looked up, meeting her gaze, "Hmm..."

She patted the bed, "Come here..."

He nodded and slid into the bed and under the blanket, she encircled her hands around his waist, pulling him into her arms. He was bare chested and she had very little on as it was, this intimacy, their skins caressing each other and his smell evoked her need for him, but that would have to wait because she knew he was tensed. But what could it be? Everything was okay between them, it was his sister's wedding soon. "Arnavji what's the matter?"

He buried his head into her chest, "I was thinking about you, when you were in the hospital..." He slid down further into her arms, his head resting against her stomach now. "I- just..."

She ran her hand through his hair as she asked, "Did you visit me often?"

He titled his head up at her, "At the hospital?"

When she nodded, he sighed as his memories returned to those months. "I tried to visit every day, but with meetings and caring for Sakshi sometimes I couldn't come and I felt terrible. As it was, I already felt so helpless that I could not do anything on my own to make you better."

He stroked the length of her arm, "You know something, this morning when I saw you lying on the bed asleep, it made me think of when I used to visit. The mere thought of you not opening your eyes, it just... I felt like my heart would stop if something-"

She pulled him closer, "Shh... what did you talk to me about when you came? Or did you just stare at me the whole time?"

He smiled, "I used to talk to you, a lot. We had a morning routine at the hospital. I would wish you good morning with a kiss on your forehead, and open the curtains knowing you disliked dark gloomy rooms. I would place a fresh bouquet of flowers on the nightstand next to you. Then I sit with you and tell about the previous day, what Sakshi was doing, the family, my morning, everything. Your silence ached, but knowing that you were right beside me breathing and stable, that made me feel relieved."

She kissed his forehead, "Thank you for not giving up on me. Vihaan jiju told me how you reacted when he spoke about turning off my life support."

He nodded, "Pretty sure Vihaan won't forget that first meeting." He held her hand to his chest, right above his heart. "I said it before as long as my heart is beating, yours can never stop. We are one...Arnav Khushi..."

Her eyes welled up in tears as she took his other hand and made him feel her heartbeat, Hamesha!"

He smiled at her, "Thank you for loving me despite everything."

She hugged him, "Loving you is the most natural thing that I know."

He kissed the crook of her neck and murmured, "Everything feels so right."

An hour later, Khushi untangled herself from her husband's arm and reached for his t shirt that he had discarded on the floor. She put it on and glanced at the monitor, their daughter was still asleep, she smiled and turned sideways, Arnav was asleep as well. She got up and went into the bathroom for her bath.

By the time Khushi had emerged from the bathroom all dressed, her little family was awake. She smiled as she saw Arnav leaning against the headboard, with Sakshi in his arms, the latter watching her favourite cartoon on her daddy's Ipad.

She sat down on the bed and pressed a kiss onto her baby's hair, "Good morning Saku..."

Just as Arnav saw her about to get off the bed, he asked, "Where are you off to?"

She touched his forehead with the back of her palm as she asked, "Are you okay? You do remember its Di's wedding right?"

He shook his head at her antics, "I'm fine and of course I do...but it won't hurt if you went down a few minutes late." Before she could protest, he grabbed her arm, pulling her against his taut chest.

She whispered, "Arnavji just this morning... we already..."

He tucked her hair behind her ear and purred into her ear, "There's no rule about a specific number per day, so..."

She glimpsed at their daughter, who was completely engrossed with her cartoon. "Arnavji you're behaving like we're teenagers..."

His hands trailed down her arms, "I'm making up for lost time love and..." He pulled back, "...wait, Mrs Raizada are you implying that if we were teenagers, we would be doing this?"

Her eyes widened as she stuttered, "N...no... I mean... urgh you know what I mean Raizada!"

He winked at her, "Fine go now... but I want..."

She didn't let him finish what he was saying because she pressed her lips against his. With what started off as a small peck, it quickly turned into a want for more till they were both out of breath.

She asked in a croaky voice, "N-now can I goo?"

He leaned his forehead against hers, "Su-re..."

Khushi had managed to busy herself helping with the preparations that it was the afternoon before she knew it and she hadn't seen either her husband or her daughter since she left them hours ago. She was missing them.

She brushed those thoughts away as she took a step back and admired all of the arrangements, she felt proud of how everything had turned out. She turned to Lavanya who was beaming herself, equally happy with the outcome.

The furniture from the living room was shifted and white sponges were spread along the marble floor. The dcor was maroon and gold, drapes and flower arrangements along with gold and purple lights adorned the house.

Khushi entered their empty room, she called out, "Arnavji where are you?"

He emerged from the poolside with Sakshi in his arms, "How are we looking mumma?"

She giggled, "You two look cute..." She kissed both of them on their cheeks and hurriedly went into the bathroom to get ready herself.

Since the wedding itself was going to be a larger event, the mehendi was intimate with just close family, just like Anjali and Vihaan wanted. Vihaan arrived with his parents Yash and Vaishali and soon after the function began. The melodious music reverberated through the walls of Shantivan.

Devyani, Garima and Madhumati took responsibility of Sakshi for the night, with full intention to be entertained by her cute antics and to have her all to themselves.

The bride to be Anjali beamed from ear to ear, she sat on a stool while the mehendi girls adorned her hands and feet with intricate designs. The other women of the house, Payal, Lavanya, Vaishali, Manorama and Khushi sat with the other mehendi girls, having their choice of designs applied.

The men decided since they were not needed at the mehendi, they would all lounge on the terrace. So that's exactly what the men did. Shashi, Mahender, Yash along with Arnav, Akash, Dhruv and Vihaan all spent the evening into the night having fun their way, drinks, music and random topics. Though deep down all the men wanted to be at the mehendi with their wives but they had strict instructions to obey.

But so much for those instructions because after a while, Arnav made his way downstairs, rules and him, like if he followed them. As soon as he spotted Khushi midst the women, his face lit up. Feeling someone's gaze on her, she looked up and widened her eyes seeing him.

Someone cleared their throat, making Arnav realise everyone's attention was on him.

Nani tugged at her pallu and chuckled, "Chotte do you need something?"

Lavanya chipped in, "You know I figured Vihaan jiju would be down here... not you."

He rolled his eyes at her, "For your information La, I'm here to check on Sakshi...I'll take her with me"

Nani protested, "No Chotte... let her be with us."

He huffed, "Fine..." and he curtly returned upstairs, not before stealing glances at his wife.

Khushi shook her head and muttered under her breath, "Laad governor!" as the other women looked in her direction and chuckled knowing exactly why Arnav had come.

As Khushi walked behind the rest of the women on their way to Anjali's room, she felt herself being pulled behind a pillar in the corridor. She was startled needless to say, "What the..." She said as she saw who it was.

He raised his eyebrows, "Saying my phrase now are we?" Clearly amused at her, he flicked her red nose. "My little Rudolph."

She pushed him back a couple steps and was about to make an escape, when he swiftly pulled her right back into his arms.

He whispered into her ear, "Mehendi dekhne doh na..." (Let me see your mehendi...)

She smiled as she held her hand up in front of him. He studied her hands intently, they were filled with swirls, a peacock, an elephant, paisleys, and tucked in amidst it all was the letter A. His A. He smiled widely seeing the letter of his name, he decided to humour himself, he took a step back and folded his arms across his chest. "Khushi Kumaaari Guptaaa right?" He said as he looked at the A on her palm.

"Ji nahin, Khushi Kumaari Guptaaa Singh Raaaizaadaaa...suna aapne?" She said proudly as she had her hand pointed to her ear. (No, Khushi Kumaari Guptaaa Singh Raaaizaadaa... did you hear?)

He smirked and inched closer to her. "Sun liya Mrs Raizada." (I heard.)

Later in the night, as Arnav and Khushi's bodies lay entangled in their silk sheets, he traced the dark designs on her hands with his finger.

He smiled brightly, "I love how it turned out."

She looked at her mehendi clad hands, "Buaji said that when your husband loves you a lot, it looks dark like this."

He raised his eyebrow, "Any doubt there?"

She shook her head, "Not at all."

He leaned forward and murmured against her lips, "Good"

Thank you so much for giving love to this story, hugs!
