Part V
1week after getting discharged from the hospital.
Shekhawat residence. *Ting tong* the doorbell rang. Swayam's mom opened the door. Sharon smiled at her wished her good evening and then entered. His mom smiled, she knew from observation that whatever they felt for each other was the same on both sides, yet to meet each other they came up with excuses, she'd asked Taani about sharon and from what she told she was perfect for her swayam. Though they were two poles, unlike poles, like swayam and his dad. Well coming to that...the equation was still the same between father and son. One taunting the other that he was weak and the other getting frustrated at every taunt. Not one day passed when Swayam wouldn't angrily slam his room door and stay inside until Taani, his mom, sharon or rey had to coax him out. He had to be at home, for a week, and so everyday someone or the other came over to see him, mostly sharon came alone, but left making him feel special, not coz of anything she did, but coz of what she said. Rey came over with the boys and they had tried to make Swayam move on from Sharon for which he'd firmly told, "Sharon hi mera kal aaj aur kal, mein usse nahi chodunga". They'd shut up, and changed the topic to Vicky who had the jealous girlfriend problem going on. Everyday was the same, except for the fact he couldn't dance. He missed dance badly, he realised what sharon might have gone through when she'd heard about her asthma. He regretted every word he'd said to her with knowing why she'd turned cold towards him. It hurt him. Hurt him coz he couldn't dance, dance the one thing that tied them both, was now lost to him. And he wasn't gonna let that happen he'd resolved in the hospital.
Coming back to the day sharon visited. Sharon entered to see his dad in front of his laptop and Swayam was no where to be found. She knew where he would be and went to his room. Before she could enter she stopped. She heard music coming from his room, it was soft and it was a hip hop song. She quietly opened his door to see him practicing, or at least trying to practice without hurting his shoulder. He made a wrong move and his face wrinkled with a frown and a wince. She rushed in "Careful Swayam! Kya zarurat hai, dance karne ke liye? Doctor ne mana kiya na?" she yelled. "Kuch nahi hua hai sharon, mein teek hoon. Doctor ne mana kiya tha, par Maine net pe..." he started. "Mujhe kuch nahi sunna hai, doctor ne mana kiya tho tum nahi karoge!" she cut him off. "Kyun sharon" he asked after sometime, in a subdued voice. "Kyun? What?" she asked, puzzled. "Kyun kar rahe ho ye sab sharon? Kyun itni khayal rakthi ho meri? Kyun mere liye inti pareshaan ho rahe ho?" he asked her, giving a voice to his thoughts. "Kyun nahi karungi mein?" she'd asked. "Mein kyun tumhara khayal nahi rakh sakthi?" she asked. "ho kaun ho tum meri, itni concerned hone ke liye?" he'd asked. "Mujhe nahi pata swayam, sach mein, all I know is, I still l..." she checked herself on time. 'He doesn't have to live with your asthma, don't hurt him, he'll suffer with you while you suffer' her mind told. Her heart to told her 'He will be hurt more if you ignore him, he doesn't care about your asthma sharon, he cares about you, he won't leave because of it'. Her mind overpowered her heart, and she replied," all I know is that you're hurt and you need support. Or mein tumhe support doongi." she completed her sentence. "Support..." he said. "Meri support...par kyun?" he asked again. 'kyunki I love you dammit' her heart yelled. "Kyunki mein bhi team ka part hoon, aur tumhe humare zarurat hai, agar nahi hai tho Hume tumhara zarurat hai" she replied cooly. Luckily for her rey had called at that time and sharon had to leave as it was time for rehearsals. Swayam followed her till the door as usual and smiled at her. His mom quietly observed all of it.
She felt her son was happier and much more at ease when sharon was around. It was as if a lost part of him had come to set things right. She turned his negativism to positivism. He was happiest with her and his friends than he had ever been with anyone else. His happiness was what mattered to her.
Time passed and Swayam didn't gibe up on dance. Though it was risky for him, he continued practicing with precaution. It was his personal secret, no one not even Sharon and rey knew. He danced after college, keeping the rehearsal hall door closed and keeping the music on low. He didn't need music much, he danced to the rhythm of his heart and soul. His steps were flawless and his routines depicted what he felt. Energy mingled with passion was vibrant in his dance. But as they say, you can't hide anything from the ones you love. Sharon came to know about this secret. She had walked on him dancing one day, when she had stayed back for some college work. She'd of course not gone in when she saw him in the rehearsal hall, she'd observed from outside. What she saw left her spell bound. She went in after he'd finished dancing and nursing his wound. His shoulder was mot exactly better but he put up with it to follow his passion.
Later after this incident, Sharon had to visit swayam's house again with Rey, for discussing something about the cultural activities to be held that month. And what she saw angered her. She was so angry that,, a person who knew her as the diva, wouldn't have stood in front of her that moment. What was it that she saw you ask? She saw Swayam's dad scolding him, taunting him again on how useless he was, how worthless he was and how dance as a career is stupid, and when he spotted rey, he'd started complimenting him, and was asking Swayam to learn something from him. That did it.
She couldn't keep it in any longer, she'd burst out. "Swayam worthless nahi hai!" she told firmly, making all of them turn in her direction. Swayam recognised anger and irritation, and knew what was about to surface. He quickly went to stop her before she put on hand upright at him, stopping him in his tracks. Taani who came in to see what was happening, became tensed too. Tauji, sharon, bhai, Rey aur diva mode not a good thing. She'd tried to make peace in vain. Sharon was in her siren diva mode. "what?" mr. Shikhawat looked at her willing her to speak up. "Swayam worthless nahi hai!" she repeated in a steely calm voice. "He is an all rounder, Swayam ko sab kuch aata hai, dance, sports, academics, sab kuch. Wo aapke tarah nahi hai...Swayam passionate hai. He follows his passion unlike you!" she told her voice shaking due to the emotions she with held. "Agar wo all rounder hai...tho kyun kar raha hai dance? Ek mamuli nachni ki tarah?" he asked. "Dance uski passion hai, uska life hai? Aapko pata hai ki wo kitni mehnat kar raha hai? He was hurt yet he didn't give up on his passion" she said. "Ek choti si chot tha wo, koi bhi usse sambhal saktha, he's not the first person to do it" he'd scoffed. "Choti? Ligament tear hua tha aapke bete ki shoulder mein! Doctor ne kaha ki wo dance nahi kar saktha! Phir bhi wo dance kia! Give up nahi kar dia, aapke tarah!" she retorted. "Agar aapko nahi pata tha, tho aap kuch mat boliye! D'you even realize how much you've hurt him with your taunts?" she continued while mr.shekhawat had just stood still, he hadn't known Swayam had got a ligament tear. He knew what it was. He was surprised he looked towards Rey and Taani who nodded their heads confirming what sharon said. "Swayam kya ye sach hai?" he asked his son. "Agar mein haan kaha tho aapko koi farak padega?" he asked silently. Mr. Shekhawat looked at his wife, who was standing in a corner observing the entire scene. She looked at him and said, "Haan Swayam ko ligament tear hua tha, isliye surgery Kia tha". "Happy? I hope aap at least abhi ussko kuch khayal rakh leeonge" she told. He looked at her and then said, "Par tum kaun ho? Swayam ke liye itna concern, aur itna affection? Kyun? Ho kaun ho tum iska?" he'd asked. That shut her up. And she got lost in her thoughts, rey came to her save. "Wo bhi humare tarah Swayam ka friend hai aur gang ka part hai. Hum sab Swayam ke liye concerned hai because he is one of us. Aapko aapke bete ka khayal rakhne chahiye, uske friend ke nahi." rey had told him. And then dragged sharon out of the house.
Swayam went to his room, too disgusted for words. And his dad just stood there mulling over the past few minutes.
