Chapter 12: This slope is treacherous
'' Well, I never gave you the right to worry about me either.'' Khushi retorted stubbornly. His words as genuine as they sounded troubled her. To know that someone apart from her family and friends cared about her was not something that suited Khushi especially because it was Arnav who was concerned.
'' Whether you want me to worry or not is not up for questioning here. I was worried. Period. '' He replied, his tone, utterly reasonable. '' You should have called. You not only worried me but your friend also. Don't you care about NK at least?''
'' I don't need to explain the terms of my relations to you.'' She warily glanced up at him taken aback to see the hint of fury in his eyes. Why was he angry? It should have been the opposite. His incessant questioning was wearing her out. Deciding to wave the white flag, Khushi finally relented and offered him a small explanation. '' Fine. I apologize for disappearing. I just needed to be alone for a while.''
''A while is a few hours. You have been gone for the whole day Khushi.''
Khushi understood he was probing around the question of her whereabouts. Arnav was doing his best not to venture in that direction but tentatively the query in his voice was not overlooked by her. Khushi braced herself, but was far too livid to keep a reign on her emotions. '' Arnav, I am not answerable to you. But, I am sorry for causing you worry. I am not a child. Stop treating me like one.''
''Then stop behaving like one.''
Khushi stilled as annoyance rapidly changed to anger . She glared at him looking directly into his molten brown eyes. '' You know what? Go to hell. I don't have to explain myself to you and I will surely not have you question my every move. I am an adult. I am responsible for myself. It would do you good to remember that, Mr. Arnav Singh Raizada.'' She poked a finger at his chest and started to march away only to find herself being hauled up against a solid form.
Arnav knew very well that she was in defiance to her true self. She was confident in herself but not in the world. Once again he was forced to acknowledge his need to know about her. '' Where were you?''
'' That is none of your business.''
'' There you are Khushi.'' Like a savior in disguise, NK walked up to them intentionally ignoring the close proximity between the two. Khushi sighed in relief as Arnav slackened his grip on her arm. However, the look in his eyes told her that they were far from done. He turned around and soundlessly walked into the palace.
There was something very potent about the way the whole palace seemed to loom before Arnav as she watched him disappear into the enclosed walls filled with control and influence. There was fear. There was resentment. Sentiments that did not know where to place themselves safeguarded her for the time being. Khushi trembled a bit but refused to be intimidated by pieces of bricks.
'' Don't you ever do that to me again.'' NK scolded Khushi with a slight shake. '' I was scared Khushi.''
'' So, was I. I didn't realize it would take me this long to come back. I kept on walking and I ended up at this temple. I felt as if I had been there before. I am so sorry.''
'' It's okay. But, please don't ever do that again. I mean it.''
'' I won't. '' Khushi reassured him by placing her hand atop his. '' How did you face the storm that is still brewing inside.''
'' There was a lot of ear-piercing cursing involved .'' NK answered with a smirk but then added, '' He worries about you. Cut him some slack, Khushi.''
Khushi considered NK's word and nodded. '' I will think about it. For now, let's go inside. I am famished.''
--------------------------------------------------------------------------
Placing his blackberry on the side table, Arnav stepped forward to open the window. It was a cool summer's night, the gentle lull of the wind carried itself inside the room, sending shivers down his spine. Eyes; calm and collected stared out into the dark void. His fingers lightly trailed along the window panel before they rested along his hips. What was it about Khushi that left him restless? He had to admit it was he who had taken the first step. Now that he knew the taste of her, it was impossible to not think about her. The thought was not only infuriating but it made him feel weak because ostensibly he was bound by his emotions. The same emotions he often belittled for being a trait of the weak.
Disturbed by the insolvent feelings, Arnav turned away from the window and left the room. Walking through the deserted corridors, he realized the decision to come back to this palace was not a wise one. There were far too many remembrances locked away in this palace. Memories that were better off left as mere fragments of the past. To piece them together now would not only be excruciating but it would stir the loss he and Anjali had endured as children. The loss of their parents was irreplaceable.
He started down the marble staircase holding onto the railing. Each step was immaculately restrained. Purposely, slowing the pace, he remained upon the staircase. His ability to assert control upon his emotions was tilting away conscientiously despite his very best efforts.
'' How many times have I told you not to play with the servant's children? What if someone saw you?''
'' Dad, I was only helping her.''
''Chote, you are naive. You don't understand the complexities of the real world. Our status does not allow us to casually engage with them. ''
'' I know that. Di plays with her. I do not. She was looking for her mother.''
'' I will speak with Nanhi. You can go now.'''
Sitting down on the step, he had to wonder where she was now. She was gone, every trace of her, along with her mother. He did not remember her that well. For the most part, the times he had yelled at her only came back to him otherwise she was just a mirage. Although, he never forgot the mounts of tears that often streaked across her chubby cheeks. She had disappeared the same day his whole world had turned upside down.
Repenting was a waste of his time. It was better to focus on the future and that was exactly what Arnav did. He built himself another world with hard work and perseverance. Anjali was truly his silver lining. Without her, it was very possible that he would have not been standing here today. Owner of a successful thriving company and an iconic personality among the media's favorites.
Now, the missing parts of his life ceased to exist for him. But, he couldn't help the sensation of dread that formed inside. His eyes slowly misted as he struggled not to let his vulnerabilities out. Arnav inhaled deeply and closed his eyes momentarily. Leaning forward, his forehead rested against his palms.
That was exactly how Khushi found him at the end of the stairs. Sitting alone, he looked as if he was in solitary separated from the rest. That image of him surely did not please Khushi. While he was a man of few words, he was always surrounded by people. Feelings along the line of compassion started to take root inside her. She gradually walked up the few steps and took a seat beside him.
He felt her presence before she even sat down. There was definitely a thread of familiarity between them Arnav conceded after looking up at her. '' What are you doing up? ''
'' Couldn't sleep! I think you were right this place is haunted. '' Khushi teased noting the dismayed expression in his otherwise stormy eyes.
Arnav gave in and smiled a little. '' I am still angry at you. ''
'' I am glad...I think we are two people who are not destined to get along well.''
'' I think we got along very well last night. Don't you think? '' He asked softly, his voice resounding with more than just amusement.
The kiss flashed before Khushi causing her cheeks to redden. She tugged on the sleeve of her baggy sweater and hid her hands. The awkwardness stretched between them before either decided to speak up.
'' Poor decision on my part. I guess.'' Arnav finally said looking down. His brows knit together as if he was in deep thought. '' Though, I am also going to be honest. If I could I would probably do it again.''
''You would?'' Surprised, Khushi looked at him unsure. She considered his choice of words. He had ultimately left the fate of their relation up to her. It wasn't a pleasant feeling. She was not in favor of this much responsibility.
'' Yes. I would.''
'' Can I ask you something?''
Arnav nodded waiting for her to pose her question. '' Why did you kiss me?''
'' Because I felt like kissing you. I cannot explain it, it just felt right. '' He answered, trying to keep the smile from broadening.
''Can it be as simple as that?'' Khushi asked soberly peering at him from beneath her eyelashes. His eyes were engulfed with an array of emotions but it was his posture that reminded Khushi of his breadth. How could she let herself be swept away by the unknown when it was very obvious she had a lot to lose. The storm may be capable of enticing one but it also tore you before you could escape it.
'' I don't know. You have to decide that.''
'' I don't know about simple but I do know that between you and I. There can only be one winner.''
'' You can't be the one to lose.''
''Neither, can you. I am not saying this because it gives me pleasure. I am being honest with you. What you started can have only one possible end. It won't be fair to either one of us.''
'' Sometimes fair isn't always what you want. ''
'' Sometimes what you want is not entirely what you need. What do you need Arnav? I need guarantees. I need promises. I am not going to wear my heart on my sleeve because I know I am the only one who is going to end up hurt.''
'' I did not...''
'' I have to go...'' Khushi intercepted hastily standing up in a rush. She disappeared just as she had come. The darkness once again lay awake before him. This time around his eyes sparkled with anticipation. He felt as if he had just found the key to a treasure chest. But, he had not. Arnav had found something more valued. He had found himself solace in the company of Khushi.
He was about to stand up when something vibrated alongside him. It was Khushi's phone. He noticed the message despite his intentions being honorable. It was an address situated in Lucknow. Who could Khushi possibly have to meet in this city? Was this not Khushi's first time visiting? Confused, he picked up her phone and headed up the spiral staircase.
------------------------------------------------------------------------------
It was finally the day of the fashion show. Despite the hurdles in between, they had at last reached the day for which everyone had worked so hard for. Khushi walked onto the stage with her Nikon strapped around her neck. She scanned the entire room smiling broadly. In the corner, she could see Lavanya ordering away on her headset, the only difference now was that NK stood beside her trying calm her down. They were cute in their own way. It was still taking some getting used to from her side after learning they were going to continue dating. Nonetheless, Khushi was ecstatic for her friend. NK waved at her with a glorious smile and Khushi felt all the tension within fade away.
She turned around only to collide into the ever so benevolent Mr. Raizada. He was also smiling, which made Khushi suspicious. It was never the easy way with Arnav. His actions had connotations within actions. Kind of like inception, almost. Khushi reveled at the thought and separated herself from him.
'' Don't worry we won't fight today. This day is as important to me as it is to you.''
'' Finally, we seem to agree on something.'' Khushi remarked adjusting the settings of her camera.
'' I am sure a lot of men out there envy this camera.''
'' Really? I guess I thought I was the only one who envied that blackberry tagging along with you everywhere.'' Khushi said mischievously glad to see Arnav Singh Raizada stunned for once. She took a quick snap of him before masquerading away into the crowd. But before she could, her interest was taken by the pair of arms which wrapped around Arnav tightly.
''Arnav. Baby, I missed you. ''
Baby? Khushi found herself cringing at the sight of that beautiful women draped around Arnav. Why did she have to hold him so closely. Some distance and some breathing space would do them good. It surely would have helped Khushi breathe better.
''Sania, it is very nice to see you again. '' Arnav looked up only to see Khushi gawking at him with fumes of untraceable anger spitting from her eyes. He shrugged and apologetically looked away. ''Khushi, this is Sania she is our showstopper model. Sania meet Khushi, she is the photographer for this event.''
Some of Khushi's anger melted after learning that she was just a model. Of course, a model who had a tendency of grappling men. They were no later joined by Lavanya and NK. After formal introductions, Sania asked Arnav to give her a tour of the place before she retired to her hotel room. Khushi made several deranged faces as she watched them walked away arm in arm.
NK heaved a sigh forcing Khushi to glare at him. ''Don't you dare say it.''
''I was not going to say anything. ''
''I know very well what you are thinking. She is not that beautiful. It is only because of all that junk on her face, I am telling you. '' Khushi explained despite being resolute on the fact that Sania was indeed gorgeous. With her slender body and those menacing features. She was exquisite.
''Whatever you say Khushi '', NK shrugged with a inward grin. Lavanya chuckled slightly and leaned into Khushi. '' NK, I think our friend has been bitten by the green-eyed-monster. Don't you think so?''
'' I am not. '' Even as Khushi said these words out loud, she knew it was a lie. She was jealous.
