Akash stepped out of the taxi at the gates of the mansion; Devghar Palace, he was told. He stared up at intricately carved, 15 feet high iron gates - their looming presence being the only indication of the magnificence that lay hidden beyond. Looking through the gates, all he could see was a long path disappearing into endless rows of trees; the palace no where in sight.
Akash stepped back and scanned the landscape surrounding the palace walls. Thorn scrubs consisting mainly of Gum Acacia trees and Shami trees sprinkled across the dry, arid land that spread as far out as the eyes could see, finally disappearing into the foothills of the Aravalli Mountain Range. Though no dwellings were present immediately adjacent to the palace walls, Akash looked back down the path which led to the highway. He remembered the taxi ride through the streets of Devghar; busy villages had slowly given way to the lonely desert, which once again gave way to more villages.
There had been plenty to occupy his mind throughout his journey and yet he couldn't help but come out of his reverie and take in the unique surrounds. Each village he passed had its own individuality. Some were more developed and closer to an urban city while others were clearly villages of artisans and craftsmen. Devghar was such a rare blend of people it seemed, ad yet, upon closer inspection, he realized what all the villages he passed through had in common - the grace of the Royal Family. Everywhere he looked, hospitals, shops, schools, there were signs of their goodness, or was it signs of their continued stronghold and oppression? He wasn't quite sure yet. It was 2013 and yet in Devghar it felt like they were in the 1800s. Its citizen behaved as though they were frozen in another century and yet dressed in modern clothes, possessed modern technology.
By the time Akash had made it to the gates of Devghar Palace, he felt a complete stranger to this land and its people. As if confirming his suspicions, a gust of wind suddenly blew across the vast Thar. Although Devghar was located in the outer perimeters of the desert, the arid climate, hot sands, and sudden sandstorms never let you forget its presence.
"Kaa dekhriyo bhaisa? Thaara naam batado tohi andar jaa sakho," called the security guard bringing Akash out of his stupor.
"Jee mera naam Akash Verma hai. Main Monya se...matlab Rajkumari Manyata se milne aaya hoon," he said as he walked over to the small cabin where the guards were. He looked through the window at the guard as he gave a slight nod and picked up the phone to convey the message. Akash's heart was racing, this was it he realized. It had been over a month since he had last seen his Monya and yet the feelings surging inside him at the moment took him completely by surprise. The restlessness and pining he had expected but what was he to make of the sudden doubt and apprehension? From the moment he had gotten off the plane right up to being outside the gates of the palace, Akash felt like he didn't belong. And it wasn't the obvious affluence of Manyata's family which was clearly apparent even from outside the gates; it wasn't that. Even as he had driven through the villages, he felt he couldn't relate to anyone. Not the man in the suit running into an office building, not the vegetable vendor, not the band of gypsies he had passed, and certainly not the residents of this palace. It was something else all together, something he registered only on a subconscious level, that had planted this seed of doubt.
Once again he was snapped out of his thoughts as the guard instructed him to board the jeep which would take him inside. Akash quickly took his seat as he watched the large iron gates make way for him. As the driver pulled in, it was as if they were in a completely different part of the world. Forgotten were the barren lands of the Thar; large trees disappeared into the sky on both sides of the long driveway, no doubt imported. Akash found himself forming opinions about these people even before he had met them. Weren't they supposed to be royals? Weren't they so proud of their heritage that they had dragged Monya all the way here to fulfill her "duties"? And yet, from what he could tell, they had chosen the farther corner of their riyaasat to build their palace, nay fortress. They had created a world of imported wildlife to ensure that it in no way resembled the geography of their very own kingdom. He didn't know what to make of all this as the care came to a stop. With a deep breath, Akash stepped out and was greeted by two slightly familiar looking faces...

Hey guys! I know it's been a long time since I've updated but hope you enjoyed this chapter. I know, I know there is no Manyata and Uday and many of you are disappointed, but I think it was necessary to describe Akash's view on Devghar and the emotions he's experiencing for the story to develop. Chapter 24 is already 1/2 done so don't worry it will only be another day or two before that is posted. Also, I would like to note that I have done just quick research on the Thar, it's wildlife, and Rajashtan's geography. Since there is no actual place such as Devghar (from my understanding), my descriptions are all a figment of my imagination. Happy ready and please comment!
