I really dread posting a comment on a story now (not that I'm very much active in reading FFs as it is) Oh well!! IF rules 😳

AJ, a doubt.

Is 'Congratulations on the new thread' spamming as well?

It often happens with me that before my update is ready, the current thread gets over and I have to make a new one. Since there is no update yet on the new thread, 90% of readers wish for a new thread or say 'waiting for an update'

What should I do about this? 😕

After going through the "comments" and relying upon my once upon a time love for "commenting" , I'd like to say a few things , relevant or not but its a reader's prospective.
No offense to the DT's or anyone here who agrees or disagrees with populace.

1.)What to comment/Why to comment:
After reading a chapter ,when a reader is ready to comment , the relativity of comments change update after update.
A story that from chapter 1 looked romantic may turn dramatic in chapter 5.

So the reader in all ways has to always think like the writer too.
And hence we have in-depth comments and insightful ones too.
This arises mind clashes which gives birth to discussions on threads.
Because all readers are thinking like the writer , there are so many ideas and replies.

Getting these ideas compared to something that relates to something "else" that is not a part of the story(a picture , a video or a novel) is furthering the thoughts of both , the writer who may take pointers from all this and the other readers who may take opinions from this.

In my personal view this is not spamming , but only till we are in bounds of that "story" on whose thread this discussion is happening.

For example , being a silent reader I chance upon chapters and not stories , so yesterday I ended up reading Zehra's new chapter for "Make Me Love" , where Khushi accepts that Arnav doesn't loves her , but also that his happiness is relative to hers.

After reading this chapter I related it to "Harry Potter's" that scene where Harmonie is dejected by Ron not remembering calling out to her when he was ill(due to the love potion) but still she was his best friend for him , whom he put in importance.

Now if I started this discussion then I think there would have been interesting replies , which too would have been relating the similarities of situations but also the inputs about other stuffs that could be related to that chapter other than what I was discussing.
But even before reaching a point (because as readers we dont know what will happen next , but only could predict)we went ahead to talk about Bellatrix and Voldies relationship then this would be in accordance to Ron and Harmonie's story and not the ARHI of Zehra's story.

So I believe chancing upon things that you can relate to the story you're reading here and discuss them should not be considered spamming but going on to discuss further "that chanced thing" is spamming.

Also I believe that long back it was the DT's who made the rule of "no emo/ monosyllable comments" , and we can see the amount of betterment we have in the comments by readers who have "tried" to open up and speak what they "feel".

Writers, being generous people have been accepting emo and "nice update/good/awesome..." types of comments from us readers but , surprisingly its the rules that have actually made the readers take a note and be more verbal and emotive , which is a great thing for us readers as it helped many of the hesitant/silent readers to be similar in maybe real life's too and well by the end of the day all these rules and efforts are done to appreciate the Writers , so in a way all this is for the "Greater Good" of the writer's ego , talent , morale boosting and respect.

^^I know it may make very little sense but I really wanted to say that.

Next point will be written later. That which Must not to be commented.

Thank you.

Adding to what Nabila said, by discussing similar situations in a FF from different couple/story (like Nabila mentioned HP and ArHi FF connection), both the writer and the reader gets a sense of "broader reading" which, I think, is essential. It takes you out of the comfort zone and makes you think differently towards a particular situation/scene.
PS - Nabila, you nailed it, girl :D

2.)That which Must not to be commented.

This is written on the basis of my knowledge and belief that not all of us are 9 year old and can accept where we went wrong and be more diligent.
(those who think my references to anything HP is out of love , you're correct and who think its out of spite your horribly correct!)

As you can see from the title I'd like to talk about all that we should comment but know that it wont last forever.
Commenting is like giving a speech or writing an essay , however small it is.
We use adjectives , verbs and if the comment starts getting long(read:speeches) we input quotes , references and experiences too.
Now a lot of Writers use pictures of the same couple they are writing about, in a chapter so as to give the reader the visual feed their mind needs while reading.

Following their writer , the reader takes a visual journey of their own and posts a pic which they feel is relating to the chapter.
For example , the last thing I read , Zehra's(😳) new chapter for "Make Me Love", made me visualize a scene from the film "A beautiful Mind" and it is quite relevant in "looks" to the chapter , but its very different to the situation.

Now some else following this , posts a relevant in "looks/feel" picture and this goes on to a point where we all chance upon a movie and posts the pics of that only , like Superman standing in the rain , flying up , talking to his GF , etc.

Then we start to discuss the looks/feel of the picture and not the relevance of the picture to the story.

That is spamming.
I maybe friends with the writer and she may find it funny but will all other readers who may not be friends to the writer , may seriously be offended by the space wasted where they could have posted a valuable comment..?
I believe that I will feel offended by that spamming.

a)To keep a thread fun , its the writers duty to initiate a discussion with reference to the story.

b)Only funny looking stuff could be fun is no rule. Fun could be pulled out from a healthy and to the point discussion , which can have pictures too.

If we did that spamming we should accept it and not bend the rules by saying we are offended by being pointed out and that "its an open forum" + blahs blahs...

Belonging mostly to Democratic countries I accept that we believe we have all the rights to be right even when we are wrong. But the moment we are wrong we start with democratic thoughts of "my opinions , my rights , my mind , my confetti" , which is where we should actually be thinking of "The Greater Good".

The above example also applies to the posting of videos/songs/quotes. Relevancy is the need of the hour.

Also the testimonial comments about wanting an update/waiting for one/congratulating for something that is told by the writer/a new thread/note about absence/reasons , and response to those posts by writers which say"posting in an hour/XYZ , are part of a reader-writer relationship which should be permitted but limited to be done "once".
In that once we can post however and whatever we readers want(pic , etc.)
Because what if the writer is in a tight spot and our constant "update!!!" screams irritate them or being eager steal the space for a comment by our constant "my spot/your updating?" , just after a res by the writer and we don't even comment further at that spot...?

Here I'd also like to mention that the time gap between two updates is what creates a havoc in us ,the readers and most of the spamming cases happen hence.
Now if I say that "make a rule that writers put up a "certain" discussion about the story which carries till the next update" so that we can legitimate the discussion that is not part of spamming , then the chances of a "comment" getting lost in this "discussion" is also possible because there are so many readers , and discussions can take real high forms.
But not allowing anything further than the comment is also like schooling the creativity of Writer-Reader relationship , which limits the evolution of a story or of that which hasn't happened.

To sum up the above part I'd like to say , when we buy a book and read it to the end/chapter per chapter , we write our comments/reviews in the spaces after each chapter/book ends(i do).

That is also to say , we make those comments/reviews in our mind and its a soliloquy between us and the book.

But when we want to discuss/dissect the story or entertain/prod the writer , we don't pen down these attributes in the book and mail it to the writer , nor do we mail ourselves as most things are in our mind.

See , comments/reviews are always on the back of the book(a place where the story is) correct...?They deal with the story of the book.

But proportions/discussions/relevancy/testimonials/appreciations , etc., are posted to the writer in letters/on blogs/fan clubs.

So if we are asked to comment on the thread(a place where the story is) and take our proportions/discussions/relevancy/testimonials/appreciations , etc., to scraps/pms and if someone finds this invasion of personal space , then take it to chat clubs and fan clubs , which actually we have a place to make them , then why are we so opposed to do things in a correct order?

PS_ Again , if you read this through , no offense to the DT or anyone who agrees or disagrees.
These are my views(remember Democracy).

Alright so I caught up with all the comments on the past few pages and this is what I have to say. As a DT member and as a reader, because i read a lot of stories from many of you that have put your point forward.

So first as a DT member, excuse me if I say something wrong because as you know I just joined and feel free to point out something that doesn't make sense.

I see many of you having problems with the fact that a reader can't comment saying "update soon", "waiting for an update" etc. but the problem here is that, like Lazyleaves pointed out, more than half of the thread is filled with posts of just "give us an update" and many times an entire thread will probably just have one part from the story because it will reach the limit of 150 pages due to these comments. Wouldn't you rather have 150 pages worth of actual comments that are criticizing/appreciating your story? And not to mention that a lot of authors are not ok with numerous posts asking them to update. So i really don't think there will a compromise on that rule.

Secondly, I feel like many of you haven't understood yet that if something is related to the story then it is ok to talk about it. For example: Harry Potter (yes i am a die hard fan as well and i get excited at the mention of it) connections to stories are fine if you are saying "oh this part in your ff with so and so reminds me of harry and hermione" and so on. That is fine because your comment is still pertaining to that story. But at the same time, like someone pointed out before (i'm sorry i forgot who, i read a lot of comments) that readers do tend to go off topic and end up discussing something totally different and more in relevance to HP than the FF. I believe that would be considered spamming. You are more than welcome to do that in the Chat Clubs or PMs or wherever. Yes its a hassle but it is what it is because in these discussions sometimes people forget that there are other readers as well, and their comments get lost in those conversations, which isn't fair to them.

Also many said that due to these rules they are dreading posting comments. Well, that shouldn't happen if you sincerely love reading a story. Why are you dreading commenting and appreciating/criticizing a story if you enjoy reading it so much? Do your comments just consist of "update please?." No. So that shouldn't bother you. We aren't stopping people from appreciating a writer's work but asking them continuously to update is not really appreciating as much as it would be if you added two lines about what you like about their story.

So that was as a DT but now as a reader there are also a few things that i would like to point out which have disheartened me from commenting on FFs that i adore.

I used to read so many FFs back in the day and I used to love commenting because like many of you said, it's always nice to let a writer know how much you appreciate their work. But then eventually i noticed that the writer probably didn't even see my comment due to the numerous conversations that would happen on the threads, and the continuous asking of updates by people, or the writer just stopped writing (which is fine because everyone has a life out of IF). I just felt it was pointless to leave a comment since i didn't think a writer would even get to read my comments through all those posts. So i just resorted to pressing the Like button and called it a day. But then this spamming rule took place and I did start commenting again because i saw that this gave a lot of writers the chance to see comments that they probably over looked before.

So overall, what i'm trying to say is that it is important to keep some of these rules to make sure everyone has a fair chance to read, write, comment, and all that jazz. And at the same time, this shouldn't discourage you from appreciating the stuff you enjoy reading because we haven't stopped you from doing that. You want to write an "update please" comment, then go ahead, but just add one or two lines actually appreciating the author for the hard work they do and respect other readers who would also like to comment.

Well yeah, thats it. Ok Cool. Thanks.
