FF: With regret - Part 2

Moving up to his knees, Shiv kneeled in front of his wife. His wife of one month. His wife, who had finally built up courage to face him head on. His wife, who was his - ultimately, in thought, as well as on paper. Raising a tentative hand towards her face, he held back at the last moment. "Anandi, what is this? Are you sure about this? You know I have been waiting for you, but I don't want another samjhauta. I don't want you to feel that you have to do this, out of some wifely duty. Life has been good. I see your beloved face every day. I hear the sound of your breathing as I go to sleep at night and when I get up in the morning. The chanak of your payals gives me hope that there is life around me. Your aroma ensures me that I am surrounded by your joy for life... I can wait, wait till eternity, until I make a place in your heart."

Meeting his querying look fully, no hesitation in hers, Anandi stared back into his eyes, losing herself in the molten depths. "Shiv, I haven't said this so far, but you mean far more to me than just a friend. As each day passes, I realize how dear you are to me. Your care, your adoration, your love is apparent in every move you make, every action you take, and every glance of your eyes. I was blind, blind to your feelings and my own." Every day that passed tortured me internally. I struggled with myself; how could I love anybody again, after failing in my first attempt at love. Yes, love, Shiv. I do love you. I love you with a devotion that I have never felt for anyone, ever. "No, don't interrupt me, Shiv... I may never gain the courage to say all this again."

Closing her eyes tight, "Shiv, when I got married for the first time, it was a game for me. The game thrilled me, tortured me, and enthralled me. I gained a new mother and father. A grandmother who didn't like me initially, but adored me over time. A best friend, who slowly and gradually became the beend I was told to respect and adore. Proximity and our teenage years made us develop the feelings that were supposed to develop. I did not know any better, so I fell in love. I fell in love with the thought of love, with the concept that he is my caretaker and I had to return his care through my unswavering devotion. I supported him in all his dreams, staying away from him for many years. But, over the years, Jagya grew up, growing away from me in the process. His hopes, aspirations, and desires became different from mine. He fell in love again - finally, his true love. I was left on the wayside as he blamed me for his falling in love with someone else. I was a gawar. I wore old-fashioned clothes. I did not fit in with his friends. The aroma of spices that emanated from me and my clothes turned him off. I did not have a place in his life. Period."

Wiping the tears that flowed unheeded from her eyes with his fingers, Shiv whispered, "Why are you torturing yourself like this, Anandi? I understand what you've been through!" Using her dupatta to wipe her face clean of any lingering tears, Anandi turned a suddenly resolute face to him. "No, Shiv, I have to do this. So, there I was, this unwanted, illiterate, undesirable wife - waiting for the final ax to fall on me. And, it did fall - unswervingly, unremittingly, cleanly - severing my relationship with him forever. The only thing that held me together was the love of my adopted family. They stood by me, propping me up, supporting me at all times, educating me, making me stand on my own two feet. I am indebted to them forever; without them, I would not be alive." So, I got my act together, burying the memories deep, taking them out only when I was alone, to look at, to brood over, and cry."

"Then, you came along - my knight in shining armor, to save a life that perhaps was not worth saving. And Dadisa and my mother conspired against me, making me accept you as my new consort. I could not believe my luck. How could I attract you? The most-handsome, in-demand bachelor that Jaitsar had ever seen? I was angry at my people for snaring you, taking advantage of your good nature, and tying you to me in your your promise to them. How was this possible? It was a match made in hell."

Shiv tugged her forward till she rested against his chest, silent tears marking tracks over his gray T. Resting his chin on her forehead, "... and there I was, thinking myself to be the luckiest man in this world. Here was this gorgeous girl, educated in thought, Indian in culture and values, and fiercely determined to improve her own lot and that of others. And her family thought that I was capable of nurturing her and caring for her; providing that final support she needed to find her wings and take flight. I could not believe my luck too. I knew that all you needed was a little bit of time, a bit of support, and a lot of love to love me as I do you. And, I am a patient man, who loves you deeply. I am content only if you are. You are the love of my life, gifted to me by God and circumstances - to be mine forever."

Raising her eyes to meet his, Anandi's raised a trembling hand to tenderly wipe off the tears welling in his. "Shiv, I won't be able to continue if you do this. Give me just a few minutes more to complete what I want to say. And, I promise, we will never discuss this ever again." At the soft smile that spread over his face, she continued, "Then, we became friends, then best friends, and then you told me you loved me. I did not believe you then. How was this possible? I thought you were pampering me, getting me to feel better about myself. But, I was happy. Here was the most gorgeous man in the world, telling me he loved me. There was a God looking out for me. But, you ruined it by trying to hand me back to Jagya, just as if I was a doll, to be bartered between the two of you. I almost left you then; only my commitment to my mother holding me back. I was angry Shiv, very angry."

"Haan, Anandi, I was foolish then. I almost threw away the most precious gift I had ever received. I am sorry..." Putting her forefinger over his lips, "Kitna boltein hain aap, Shiv? Shhh!" As his lips automatically puckered into a soft kiss on her finger, she blushed and pulled her finger away, looking away in shyness. "Shiv, you distract me too much. Suniye toh! We got married then, everything passing in a beautiful dream. The story tale princess and prince, happily ever after. But the ogre had returned. To haunt everybody with his presence. But, to my pleasant surprise, I realized that I felt nothing for him. I only wanted him to be there to support my family. What a relief that was!"

"Then, we went to Kesar Bagh. I felt like the young Anandi once again, awed by this amazing castle I was entering, the love I was getting from my new family. However, reality came to the fore soon, when I realized that marriage entailed more than an exchange of vows. You had certain expectations, which horrified me. Not the expectations themselves, but the certainty that I was incapable of meeting them. I was failing at the first hurdle. My insecurities caused me to lie and deceive you, shaming myself further. But, as my Surya Badal, you led from the front once again - helping me come to terms with you, your selfless love, and my inability to move forward."

At the shivers coursed through her at the memories, Shiv ran both hands soothingly across her back, much as an experienced rider would soothe a nervous filly. Drawing her slightly closer, he waited till her slight body lay against his laxly. Sighing deeply, Anandi said, "Shiv, this past month has been an eye-opener for me. I slowly realized that I was primarily scared of failure, not of you. I did not want to fail at this so-important relationship again. I wanted to succeed at making you and myself happy. The rest of our two families are important. I have to ensure that their every need is satisfied. But, my innermost desire is to have a loving, caring, fulfilled relationship with you. I see you in my dreams now - both waking and sleeping. I see you holding out your hand to me, to raise me from the depths. I see you and I walking hand in hand into the sunset. I see you and I working together to fulfill all our dreams. I see you... and only you, my love."

Tipping her face up to his, Shiv bent down slowly to brush his lips across hers. "I seem to have waited an eternity to hear this my love. I see us together, forever."

FF: With regret: Part 3 (Final)

Anandi suddenly clutched on to Shiv with all her might. "I am scared at being so happy, Shiv. What if..." "No more what ifs, Anandi. You promised that we will never discuss this again. Let us throw out all the negativity... It is our time now." Hugging her tight to him, he stooped low to suddenly lift her up high. Letting out a deep roar of laughter, he held her high above him, as he would a baby ' "Us, Anandi. Finally, us!" Clutching on to his shoulders for support, she giggled back into his face, all tears forgotten, "Kya kar rahein hain aap, Shiv. Someone will hear. Let me down!" "Kaun sunega, Anandi? It's just you and me in the house. I want to shout out loud with excitement!"

"No, Shiv, let me down! You'll sprain your back." Guffawing even louder, he gave her a little toss in the air, "Your weight will sprain my back? Really??" Taking pity on her shrieks of fear cum laughter, he gently started bringing her down to earth. As she slowly slipped down the front of his body, their laughter disappeared and their smiles faded. A deep resonant silence reverberated in the room. As their eyes locked, their breathing deepened until the only sound in the room was that of their increasingly stressed gasps for air. As Shiv's gaze seemed to eat her up, Anandi suddenly gave up the battle and burrowed her head deep into his shoulder.

Fingers twisting into his T-shirt, "Mujhe bahut sharam aa rahi hai, Shiv. No one has ever looked at me with such longing." Smiling gently, "I know Anandi, but this is the first time you have given me the liberty to look at you openly. I can't help but gaze." Tilting he face towards his, "Looking at you, I forget the world." Trailing a forefinger over her hairline, "I can lose myself behind the veil of your lustrous black hair." Drawing his finger further downwards, he stroked it gently over her right eyelid and then over her left, "I can drown in these bottomless doe eyes." Trailing his finger further down her cheek, "This downy softness makes me want to gobble up some candy floss." Suiting words to action, he bent further down to press a soft kiss on both cheeks."

Long having given up the battle, Anandi waited with bated breath for the next onslaught on her senses. Her eyes popped open when she suddenly realized that Shiv had moved away. He had pulled back just enough to keep a hairsbreadth of space between them. As she looked at him questioningly, he quirked an eyebrow at her. "Anandi, why don't the two of us tell everyone that we have to go away for some work? Let's both of us take the day off and spend the day at home. I'll lock the jeep in the garage. Give the servants a holiday too, so we get to be all alone. Mil kar aaraam kartein hain ghar pe." Blushing slightly, Anandi nodded and picked up her phone.

Shiv disappeared into the bathroom, where she could hear him talking to Bheem Singh. Quickly changing into a soft white salwar kameez, she set about righting the room. As two arms snuck around her middle, she gasped with shock, "Shiv, you scared me." Struggling out of the stranglehold, she turned to see a madly grinning Shiv, who promptly shook his wet hair in her face. "Shiv, what's wrong with you? Bacche ban gaye ho kya?" Smirking at her, "You better be prepared for all this, Anandi. I am finally free to love you, tease you, harass you'"

"Accha bacchu? Shiv, aap mujhe uskao mat! Wait and see what I do to you'" Twisting free, she quickly picked up the jug of water kept on the bedside table. As he stalked her, smirking all the while, "Shiv, I will throw this on you!" As he grabbed her wrist, Anandi attempted to toss the water on him. With the slightest flick of his wrist, Shiv pushed her hand away, soaking the two of them in the process. "Shiv!" gasped a shocked Anandi' "I am drenched through!"

As she glared at him irately, she noticed the transfixed look in his eyes. Looking down at herself, she was horrified to see that her white kurta was almost transparent now; the only thing protecting her modesty was her long hair. Squealing with horror, Anandi almost tripped herself up while backtracking to the safety of the bathroom. Slamming the door shut against the roars of laughter, she collapsed against the sink. Catching a glimpse of herself in the mirror, she almost couldn't believe her eyes. "Is that really me? This person whose eyes are dancing with laughter? This person whose skin glows with the joy of living? This person whose smile changes her entire look?"

"Anandi, I am hungry. Come out soon!" As Anandi then rushed about making Shiv's favorite breakfast - halwa, puri - things seemed almost normal. She working, and he insisting on helping. But there was a difference; there was a pause each time they brushed against each other; there was an intake of air each time fingers met; there was a comfort in the resting of their bodies against each other, every time they could.

The rest of the morning passed as if in a blur. Intervals of laughing, intervals of talking, intervals of working around the house, and intervals of silence, where no one needed to say anything - such was their sync. Sitting on the couch reading took on a whole new meaning, as Shiv twisted around to lay his head on her lap. That put paid to her own reading. All she could do was absorb the unfamiliar weight on her lap, stare at the engrossed face, get absorbed by that wayward lock of hair on his forehead. Giving in to weeks of longing, she smoothed the lock away from his head, stroking his forehead, moving down to fondle his ears.

Tossing his book aside, Shiv reveled in the touch, closing his eyes against the sensations coursing through him. Raising his hand and placing it firmly behind her neck, he pulled her head lower, till their noses almost met. Watching each other upside down, mesmerized by the sudden intent in the others' eyes, they held their breath for a nano second. Expelling it suddenly, breathing in the others' unique aroma, they simultaneously moved that micro inch till they could plant a kiss on each other's nose. "Anandi, I love you so much," breathed Shiv, his moving lips causing further tremors to course through her. Placing her hands on his chest for better leverage, Anandi moved the further distance needed to cover his lips with hers. "But, not as much as me, Shiv. I worship the ground that you walk on."

Twisting sideways and upwards, Shiv maneuvered himself into a sitting position, with Anandi now on his lap. Covering her mouth with his, he silenced her effectively, finally taking the gift that was being proffered to him with both hands. As her hands crept over his shoulders, burying themselves in the thick, crisp hair at the nape of his neck, he pulled her increasingly closer, ravishing her mouth with his, and being ravished in turn. "Are you ready to take the next step, Anandi? I cannot wait a second longer." At the desperate plea, Anandi mutely trailed her mouth over his jawline, "Yes, Shiv - but what about lunch."

Heaving a silent laugh, he pressed his forehead against hers, "You are becoming a true Shekhar, Anandi. Lunch can wait. I cannot!" Standing up swiftly, he swept her up into his arms, quickly sneaking another kiss on the way. As she curled her hands tightly around his neck, he made rapid tracks to their bedroom, slamming the door open with his foot. Taking her to the windows, he held her while she drew the curtains tight. As they passed the dresser, she picked up their mobiles, switching them off. At the silent quirk of his eyebrow, she said, "I want no interruptions today, Shiv. The world, and its problems, can wait." Nuzzling a swift kiss onto her lips, he strode over to the bed. "No roses today, Anandi." "Yes, but no alarm clocks either, Shiv!"

As they shared a soft chortle, he laid her against the pillows as if she were the most precious and delicate thing in the world. Standing back, hands on hips, he scanned her from head to toe, "Mine, all mine." Sliding down onto the bed next to her, he turned toward her, raising a hand to stroke it loving along the curve of her body. Moving away, he sat up to raise her foot, pressing a kiss on the payals that resided there permanently. Looking up at her face from there, he softly started pressing each toe, until she squirmed in delight. Tickling the sole of her foot gently, he laughed as she giggled and twisted in her attempt to get away.

As she sat up to escape his ministrations, they found themselves suddenly face to face. Putting her foot aside, he took her sweet face in his hands, sweeping kisses across her face, disbalancing her until she lay on his chest completely. Hugging her close, he twisted over until he was lying on the bed, with her draped over him. Kissing passionately, they forgot where they were, who they were, why they were there. All the recalled was each other, their essences, their heat, their taste - and that they were made for each other.

As the curtain fluttered in the mild breeze, a ray of light sneaked in repeatedly, tracking a path across the room. Playing hide and seek with the oblivious couple on the bed, forging a path over the pile of clothes growing on the floor, and lighting up the room with the warm glow of life and love. The enraptured couple paid no heed to it, bent only on lavishing attention on each other and loving as they had been meant to. The ray danced on heedless, casting a spray of dust motes over them, giving a golden aura to the most beautiful couple that ever lived - Shiv and Anandi.

OS: And so, it begins...

Anandi ShivRaj Shekhar. It sounded good. Anandi Shivraj Shekhar, Sarpanch, Jaitsar. That sounded even better. Shiv sat at his office table, smiling dreamily off into space. His wife of six months. How much they had undergone in that time. How they had struggled to establish some sort of footing in their marital life. And what a revelation each day had been, as he unraveled the complexity named Anandi.

He had seen the way in which Anandi had been pulled in two ' between her fears and her desire to be a "good" wife, between her attachment towards her ex-in-laws and her new ones, between her old life and her new. She faltered several times, but she balanced it all out in the end. She now had a foot in both boats, perhaps like every girl who gets married. She had learned the fine art of pleasing her new relationships and her old, while finally keeping an eye out for herself. Circumstances had taught her that.

Leaning back in his chair, Shiv smirked to himself as he recalled the initial glitches in their married life. How he had gone overboard a few times, right in the beginning, scaring her into her shell. How he had vowed to wait for her to initiate. He guffawed out loud as he remembered how much she had fumbled while trying to indicate to him that she was ready for me. Her awkward attempts at hugs and touches, her pouty episodes, her foot stomping at his not shouting at her. "Aww, my sweet baby! She didn't see what the whole world saw - she loved me."

Closing his eyes, he bit into the tip of his pen as her recalled how finally, he came home one night to a darkened house. Heaving a deep sigh, he remembered his disappointment at not seeing her smiling face at the door. He had trudged into the bedroom slowly, only to receive the shock of his life, to see "his" Anandi, dressed like a bride once again, sitting on the bed, waiting to restart their life. And what a start it had been. He shuddered as he re-experienced the first touch of her lips on his, the first run of her hands through his hair, the first desperate clutch of her fingers on his shoulder, dragging him down to heaven, and the first merging of two bodies into one and of two souls into one.

"Sir, here is some mail for you'" Frowning at the interruption, Shiv put his spectacles aside to glare at Bheem Singh. "What's wrong, Bheem Singh? I had told you I was busy working out the logistics of the railway project. "I'm sorry sir, I didn't mean to interrupt, but I think you were waiting for these papers." Scowling at the rude awakening, Shiv grabbed the envelop from Bheem Singh; his scowl quickly dissipating as he saw the return address. Quickly tearing the envelop open, he slammed his fist into the table in jubilation! Seeing Bheem Singh's smile, he quickly jumped up, shouldering on his jacket. "Bheem Singh, I am going home early. Disturb me only if it is absolutely urgent."

Drawing his jeep up in front of Anandi's school, he stood on the horn; for once forgetting about protocol. As the peon came running to see what the problem was, Shiv signaled to him to fetch Anandi. Wearing a thunderous scowl, Anandi came charging out, "Why are you making all this racket, Shiv?" "Arre, ghar chalo Anandi, I have some urgent work!" Huffing prettily to herself, Anandi went in to inform Guli, while Shiv tapped impatiently on the steering wheel.

On the way home, Shiv detoured through the chowk. "Anandi, bada jalebi khaane ka dil ho raha hai. Let's pick some up." "Shiv, you are getting fat. Kitna khaate hain aap. Ab to love handles bhi aa gaye hain!" Smirking at her, Shiv winked, "And don't you just love it, meri jaan?" Blushing and pouting at him, she couldn't help giggling' he was so right! They were her favorite place to hold on to while sleeping curled up against him like a kitten seeking warmth.

As they drew up to Circuit House, Shiv hopped out of the car, ran around to Anandi's side to drop his files and the hot bag of jalebi into her hands. Bending low, he swooped her up and out of the car, ignoring her shrieks of horror. "Shiv! The servants will see us!" "Na, I called and sent them all home." Smirking wryly at her perplexed expression, he strode towards the main door. "Jaanu, the keys are in my pocket, nikaal lo." Groaning softly at the exquisite torture, he kicked the door open, walking straight to the diwan in the lobby. Dropping her like a bag of potatoes, he walked back and locked the door. Rubbing his hand gleefully, he used his best imitation of Dilip Kumar to ask "And now, jaanu' where were we?" Clambering backwards, in a fit of giggles, Anandi made one last attempt to save herself from the despo in front of her. "Shiv, what's wrong with you?"

Grabbing both her hands to keep her in place, Shiv crouched over her and poured a stream of kisses over her upturned, glowing face. Slanting his lips over hers, he silenced her giggles effectively. As she quietened, he let go of her hands, and still kissing passionately, pulled off his sweatshirt, pausing only for her to draw it over his head. Seeing the heated passion in her eyes, he twisted her around to pull at her doris, dropping kisses wherever each loop came undone. Unable to bear the sweet torment any longer, she twisted around, using her puny strength to pull him down on herself, reveling in the familiar weight. Wrapping his arms tight around her, trying to merge their bodies, he ravished her lips, her cheeks, her chin, her neck - moving slowly downward to his ultimate goal. As they became one, the dust motes illuminated the lost couple in a golden aura, making them almost into a beautiful statue in motion.

Panting heavily, Shiv collapsed next to her, propping her drowsy head on his shoulder to make place for both of them on the narrow diwan. Running idle hands over and over her body, he waited patiently for her questions. And they didn't take long in coming. "Shiv, aaj hua kya hai aapko? What made you do this in the midst of a work day?" Turning towards her slightly, he pushed her tousled hair away from her eyes. "I have some news for you, Anandi. I don't know if it will make you happy or sad, but I am very excited." Sitting up in all her natural splendor, Anandi exclaimed, "Tell me quick, Shiv' is it about the railway project, the nehar, the school'" Shutting her up with a hand over her lips, Shiv reached across to where he had dropped his papers on the table. Extracting the envelop, he handed it over and sat back to wait.

Quickly skimming through the letter, Anandi looked at him in shock. "Yeh kya hai? What is this, Shiv? What are you trying to tell me? What did you do?" Smiling softly, Shiv said, "Jaanu, I cheated on you a bit. I took your signatures without you knowing what you were signing on. That is your penalty for trusting me so much. All I had to do was slip in the nomination papers, declaration form, and financial statements into the daily bundle of papers you sign, and you were none the wiser! Congratulations, Mrs Anandi ShivRaj Shekhar, your application to contest for the Legislative Assembly has been accepted by the Election Commissioner!"

"Shiv! But why? I am happy with my current work. And that Heth Singh..." "Yes, Anandi, I know that you are, but I have also seen your capabilities and abilities. You are destined for bigger things. The zeal in your eyes and your desire to help others is so far restricted to Jaitsar. As an MLA, you will have a wider reach and the rutba to help so many more. Your direct contest against Heth Singh is already won by you. People know you and your honesty. He doesn't stand a chance." "But Shiv, I am scared. I had never imagined something like this! Perhaps I will fail in my duties."

Lifting her downfallen head up with a forefinger, he stroked her soft cheeks gently as he said. "My darling, you don't need to tell me your wishes, aspirations, and fears. I know you, don't I? And you WILL win. I will support you in every fight, just as do in mine. The first step has been taken, my love. I am now just waiting for the day that I, ShivRaj Shekhar, Collector of Jaitsar, report to you, Mrs. Anandi ShivRaj Shekhar, Member of Legislative Assembly!"
