i may b wrong but i'm quite confident on this n after reading how arnav described khushi i thought like this😃
Arnav changed his clothes and settled in the recliner. He thought about the girl he saw and about what Aman had told him. What if she was committed? What if she had a boyfriend? What if she had a life which would not include him?
He fell hard for her and Aman's words only made him go crazy.
There were three girls in his life before Lavanya.
He was serious about the first girl and had thought that it was love. When he wanted to propose to her, she had told him that she found somebody else. It had hurt him and the hurt reflected in his job. Only after he saw the girl in the toy store, did he understand what love was. The first time, it was just some sort of an infatuation. With the girl he met that night, it was love.
In the beginning, the second girl in his life liked him for who he was. Even though he was not interested, he spent time with her. Later, she came to know about his immense wealth. Money blinded her eyes and she wanted to cheat him. When he realized it, he kicked her out of his life.
The third one and Lavanya were different. They were interested in his money, power and connections. They did not sugar coat it with the words 'love' or 'care'.
When the girl previous to Lavanya wanted to take their relationship to the next level, he had said no. He was not interested in live in relations. He had never been interested in it.
The final person was Lavanya. She never tried to intrude into his personal space and he liked that about her. She was money minded. She was selfish. At the same time, she hadn't promised him a future either. He had sent her away for only one thing.
Those eyes. Those eyes which started to haunt him from the second he saw them.
Arnav did not actually need any girl friends. He had a family who loved him and whom he loved. At the end of each tiring day, his family would welcome him with a warm smile.
Yet, that wasn't enough.
He wanted someone to call his own. Someone to fill the vacuum in his heart. Someone to share his life and spend every second with. Like Shyam was for di. Like Payal was for Akash. Like his mom had been for his father.
His very first choice had been a mistake and he didn't want to get hurt again. He was a quick learner. He learnt from his mistakes and dated women who weren't interested in trying to tie him down. The girls he chose believed in stupid short term relationships which were nowhere near what he believed in.
The only thing was they depended on him and he liked to spend on them. It gave him a feeling that there was someone who wanted him and only him, even though it was in the financial basis.
It was what he thought until he saw her.
One look at her and he was ready to lay his heart in front of her. It was love at first sight for him. She was nowhere near the girls he had dated. He had seen the calculating gazes of people like Lavanya. This one was different. There was nothing calculating in it. The big bad world had failed to rob her off her innocence.
His thoughts were disturbed by his sister.
"Chote!" she called him. "You look lost."
"Lavanya ki baarein mein soch raha tha." [I was thinking about Lavanya.]
"Don't waste your time by thinking about something which has no meaning in your life."
She was right and he knew it.
"I didn't see nani and dadi."
"They are going to some temple early in the morning tomorrow. So, they slept early."
He got up from the recliner and stretched himself. It had been a really long and tiring day. Anjali was about to ask him something but had stopped herself when he saw his tired face.
"You want to tell me something, di."
"It's late. You don't mind?"
"Kyun, di? Appointment dena hai kya? [Why, di? Should I give you an appointment?] I have all the time in the world for you."
She sat on the bed and asked him to sit near her.
"Chote, mujhe patha hai hum iss ko lekar bahut baath kar chuke hain. [Chote, I know that we have spoken a lot about this.] But still, I am going to ask you again."
He tried to get up as he knew what she was going to tell him. She caught her hand and stopped him.
"Ek baar koshish karo, chote. [Try once, chote.] Go back to practising surgery and'."
"Di, please."
"It wasn't your mistake that time. Everybody knows that."
"It came a bit too late. They came to know after everything was over."
She placed her hand on his cheek and said, "Being a surgeon is your dream, chote. Don't spoil your dream because of a few others. The little brother I know is not here. I need him back. Go back to surgery and you will get back yourself. You are really happy from the outside. But from the inside, I know it is still hurting you. Give yourself a chance."
"I can't, di. Yeh itni aasaan nahi hai." [I can't, di. It is not that easy.]
"Mere chote ki khushiyaan mujhe waapas chahiye. Ek baar socho. Sirf ek baar." [I want my chote's happiness back. Think for once. Just once.]
After a long time, he said, "I will think about it, di."
She gave him a faint smile and nodded.
When she got up, he asked, "Are you going home?"
"Adi has already slept. I have to go. I will come in the morning."
The Raizada-Kapoor Mansion was actually three big houses in a single compound. The idea belonged to Shyam. He was a single child and he had always wanted a big family. When he had met Anjali for the first time, he fell in love with both her and her family. After marriage he did not want to move his wife away from her brothers for two reasons. One was because he knew that Anjali took care of both Arnav and Akash like a mother after their parents passed away. He did not want to separate them. The second reason was for himself. He wanted to stay near them and be a part of them. So, he made a plan and spoke about it with the three siblings.
The idea was to build three houses in one big compound so that they could be together and have an independent life as well.
Shyam and Anjali stayed in one with their children. The other one was occupied by Akash, Payal and Ankit. The final one had Arnav and the two grandmothers.
The house in which Arnav stayed was more like the commanding centre. All of them spent every waking second in their office or in Arnav's house. They went their own ways only at night.
Arnav woke up sweating. His heart beat was all over the place and he tried to calm himself down. When it slowed down a bit, he glanced at the bed side clock. It was almost three in the morning. He closed his eyes and rubbed his hands over his face.
"Horrible," he muttered to himself.
In the dream, it was night and he was on his way home from the hospital after a late night shift in the NICU. The road was deserted and all of a sudden a little girl around the age of seven ran in front of his car. He slammed the brakes and the car stopped just in time, or the girl would have been hurt.
The girl looked pretty shaken up. She was crying and shivering. He opened the door and got down to check whether she was fine. As soon as he got down, the girl ran to him and hugged him tight.
"Please madat kijiye," she requested. [Please help me.]
He pried her hands away from his waist and knelt in front of her.
He wiped her tears and said, "Kya hua? Kyun ro rahi ho?" [What happened? Why are you crying?]
"They are taking me away," she told him as fresh set of tears escaped her eyes.
"Who is taking you away?"
She put his arms around his neck and said, "I don't know. I don't know anybody other than those two. But some people are taking me away."
At that time, three men ran towards them and pulled the little girl from his hug. He tried to stop them. They didn't listen. Without wasting their time with him, they dragged her away.
The little girl screamed and her screams made every inch of his heart ache. He hated himself for not being able to help her.
Her screams had been unbearable and that was when he was jolted from his sleep.
He pushed away the bed covers and went to the kitchen to drink some water. He gulped down half the bottle and poured the rest on his face. The little girl's screams echoed in his ears.
He had not seen her before and he didn't know what to make out from the dream. It sounded pretty real to him.
He dragged himself up the stairs and to his room. He tried to sleep but couldn't. He tossed and turned until his alarm announced that it was six in the morning. He changed into a pair of tracks and a sweatshirt. He ran longer than necessary and returned home a couple of hours later completely drenched in sweat.
A baby was born premature and she needed to be kept in the incubator. He was busy with those procedures and it took his mind away from the nightmare. By the end of the day, he almost forgot about it.
It was a Saturday. It was usual practise for Aman and Arnav to eat dinner in restaurants on the weekends.
Arnav peeped into Aman's cabin and asked, "Over? Or busy?"
A file was open in front of him.
"Give me two minutes. I'll wrap up the last file for today and we can go."
Arnav checked the baby. Her vitals were good. He asked the nurse to keep an eye on her and went to the parking area. Aman joined him a minute later in his trademark denims and full arm shirt with the sleeves rolled up to the elbow.
"Didn't see Shreya today," Arnav told Aman.
"She has gone to her cousin's wedding. Must be back within a couple of days."
"Where to?"
He thought for a second and said, "There is this place a patient of mine suggested. It seems they have the best Italian food in town and they serve it only on weekends. Want to try?"
"Where is it?"
Aman gave him the address and they drove to that restaurant.
"Why didn't we know about it before?"
"I didn't know they served Italian there. Looks like they have a separate dinning area for the Italian cuisine."
They went to the restaurant and ordered their favourites. The dcor and the furnishings caught their attention.
"It's a bad thing we didn't know about this place till now," Aman told Arnav.
Their food arrived within fifteen minutes and they tried it out. It was so good that they wanted to lick their fingers. Arnav ordered his favourite Tiramisu for dessert while Aman ordered Panna Cotta.
Just as their desserts arrived, a middle aged man, who was sitting in the table next to them, called the waiter.
"The food is just awesome," the man told the waiter. "Can you thank the chef on my behalf?"
"Please wait a moment, Sir," the waiter said. "I'll ask the chef to meet you."
"That will be great."
The waiter returned a few minutes later with the chef in tow.
Arnav and Aman looked at the chef and their eyes widened to such an extent that their eyeballs would have rolled out of their sockets.
It was the girl they had seen in the toy store.
The waiter introduced her to the customer. "Sir, this is our chef."
The man extended his hands towards her and she shook it.
"Nice to meet you, Ms'."
"Khushi, Sir."
The man smiled and said, "Nice name. I am honoured to meet you. The dessert is excellent. You have done a great job."
"Glad that you like it, Sir."
He introduced her to his son. "My son is the one who pestered me to try Italian. Thanks to him I have completely enjoyed my dinner."
"Do you have any suggestions, Sir?"
"Everything is fine the way it is."
"Thank you, Sir."
Within that time, Arnav and Aman tasted their desserts and realized the truth in the man's compliments.
They stared at each other for a while and back at their empty plates.
"I just can't believe it," Aman mumbled.
He got up from the chair and stopped Khushi before she went into the kitchen. She gave him a questioning glance.
"I am Aman, one of your fans."
The way he said 'one of your fans' made her smile.
"Excuse me. Mujhe kuch kaam hai." [Excuse me. I have some work.]
He didn't let her go. "Do you only speak with people above the age of forty five?"
Her eyes darted to the middle aged man who had complimented her and then back to him.
"No. I don't speak with strange people unless necessary," she told him.
"Hey, this is necessary. Absolutely necessary."
"I don't see how this is necessary."
"I'll tell you how. First, we become friends. Then we meet somewhere else and hang out together."
"Sounds boring."
He faked a frown and said, "You are bad to a man's ego."
"Why are you really here?"
"To be friends with you," he said as if the answer was very obvious.
"You don't give up, do you?"
He shook his head. "No."
She sighed and said, "My name is Khushi and I won't tell you that I am glad to meet you until I am sure who you really are."
"I told you, right?" he asked. "I am Aman. And my friend sometimes calls me Mister Alien. You know, from the Men In Black movie."
"I can see why," she said with a teasing grin.
"See? We are great together. Friends?"
He extended his hand and waited for her to accept it. She was thinking on whether to accept it or not.
"Come on, Khushi. I am not that bad."
She finally accepted his hand.
"It wasn't that difficult, was it?" He turned around and pointed towards Arnav. "That is my best friend, Arnav."
Khushi stepped aside to see who he was talking about. She saw the man she had met in the toy store the previous night.
Their eyes met and Arnav wasn't able to move his gaze from hers.
