Part 2

Once gudiya was fed, it was time for her sponge bath. The doctor had strictly warned that she shouldn't have massage or proper bath till she had gained at least 1/2 kilo more weight. So Padma sponged her and Riddhima put on fresh clothes. Before wrapping her up Riddhima gave her the vitamin drops.

"Tum jaakar naha lo main isey sambhalti hoon" Padma said to Riddhima beginning to wrap the baby. Riddhima moved to the closet to fetch her clothes, when she heard a strange noise. She turned to see what it was. Her maa had just picked up the baby and she had thrown up. Riddhima rushed to her and taking the baby asked her mom "kya hua?" "Koi baat nahi. Babies do throw up at times." Padma assured her as she wiped the baby's mouth.

Riddhima set about cleaning and changing the baby's clothes while her mother went to change her soiled clothes. Riddhima was gently rocking the baby to sleep when her mother returned with a little water in a feeding bottle.

P: I'll give her this water and make her sleep, you go for your bath.

Riddhima lifted the baby, to hand her to her maa, when she threw up again. Now Riddhima was really scared. Her eyes brimming with tears she said "Maa I think I should call the pediatrician."

P: Arrey it's nothing serious. This is quite common in children. Ask Armaan to get some gripe water when he comes for lunch. That will improve her digestion.

Riddhima waited to make sure the baby was ok and went for her bath only after she fell asleep. While having her bath she wondered if what her maa said was true and tried to remember if Akshat and Ani used to throw up as babies. She could only recollect that Akshat didn't trouble her much as a baby and as for Ani, she could hardly remember anything about his initial days because akka had taken total charge of him. Riddhima's only job had been to feed him from time to time. Akka had taken care of everything else.

Once again her thoughts went to that noble woman and she prayed for her quick recovery. In the three years she had been with them, she had became an indispensible part of their family. She remembered when Ani was born, how she had given her a specific diet so that baby did not get gas or indigestion. Maybe that was the problem. Perhaps she was eating things she wasn't supposed to. How she wished akka was there to at least tell her what she should avoid. She herself couldn't recollect anything. She used to just unquestioningly eat whatever akka put before her.

As soon as she was out of the bath, her maa said "gudiya so rahi hai. Jaldi chalo nashta karne. Kaafi der ho chuki hai. Tumhare papa ko bhi bhook lagi hogi." As soon as both of them came out of the room they saw Shashank walking up and down like a caged tiger. Seeing them he asked angrily "Kahan reh gayi thi tum dono? It's way past my breakfast time and I have to take my BP medication also. You people never realize the importance of doing things systematically. You mother and daughter don't realize how time flies when you start chit chatting."

Riddhima couldn't stand his sarcasm so she replied "Papa we were not chit chatting. Gudiya vomitted twice. We were cleaning her up and making her sleep. When there's a baby in the house things tend to go out of schedule. You needn't have waited for us. I'm sure if you had asked kaka to serve you, he would have."

Shashank didn't reply but just went to the table and the ladies followed him. Kaka immediately served hot idlis with Sambhar and chutney. Shashank's face contorted seeing that. He took kaka to task saying "Kal tumne utappam banaya tha aur aaj idli? Kya tum parathe waigaira nahin banate? Of course, idli banana aasaan hai na. Saanchey mein daal diya aur cooker mein rakh diya, kaam khatam."

K: Nahi ji aisi baat nahi hai. Bahu ke liye yahi achcha hai isliye...

S: Tumhara matlab hai parathe achche nahi hai? To hum sab ko Madrasi banna padega.

Riddhima was boiling and was about to shout at her papa but kaka indicated to her with his eyes not to do so. Instead he said to Shashank "Sahebji aap batao aap kaunsa paratha khana chahate ho. Abhi banakar lata hoon."

S: Is idli ke alawa kuch bhi chalega.

P: Haan main bhi paratha hi loongi.

Riddhima looked at them surprised at their unreasonable demands. As it is kaka was over burdened in akka's absence and to dance to their demands as if they were some VIP guests. But she didn't want to create a scene. When kaka went into the kitchen, she got up to follow him. But her mother called her back asking "Kahan jaa rahi hoo. Jaldi se nashta khake gudiya ke paas jao. Woh akeli hai." Riddhima hurriedly ate 2 idlis and walked away from there.

She lay on the bed and started thinking about a solution to all this. Should she ask her parents to leave? She knew she'd have a tough time managing Ani and the baby but she couldn't have them treat kaka and akka in this manner. She'd have to talk with Armaan regarding this. He was the only one who would look at the issue without prejudice and give her the right advice.

She woke up with a start hearing her phone ring. It was Armaan calling. She looked at the clock as she picked up the phone and realised that she had slept for nearly an hour. When she said "hello" he immediately asked "sorry, so rahi thi kya?" she was surprised how he knew that and asked him.

A: Firstly you took time to pick the call and secondly your voice sounds sleepy.

Then on his enquiry about the princess, she told him about the baby throwing up etc. He enquired worriedly whether they should take her to the doctor, but Riddhima told him what her maa had said and asked him to get a bottle of gripe water on his way home. Only when he asked if Ani was back she realized that it was time for him to be picked up from his play-school. She went to check if anyone had gone to fetch him and was informed that kaka had left a few minutes back, which she conveyed to Armaan. He cut the call saying that he may be late for lunch as he had take over Rajan's OPD because he was on leave that day.

Riddhima went into the kitchen to see what kaka had planned for lunch but didn't see any preparations there. Her maa who had followed her asked "Kya chahiye tumhe? Mujhe batao. Tumhe kitchen mein aaney ki zaroorat nahi hai."

R: I just came to see if I could help kaka with some work. As akka is not here there's no one to assist him. He has to take care of both outside work as well as all the work in the house.

In her mind she thought papa is sitting here and watching one news update after the other on TV, though all of them repetitive. Instead of going for walks in the garden he could go and pick Ani. It would save kaka so much time. Her thoughts were interrupted by her mother saying "are trying to say that I'm not doing any work? With my arthritis, you don't know how much pain I'm going through. Even then I thought I should come and help you in time of need. But you seem more concerned about the servants than your parents. You've changed a lot Riddhima. You were such a caring daughter."

Riddhima was fed up of telling her maa not to address kaka and akka as servants, but to no avail. She didn't want to sound ungrateful to her mother either. So she said "maa, I appreciate your help very much. Only thing I can't sit and watch you all working so much. Kaka is also getting old. He's also not able to work as fast as he used to before."

Just then a whirlwind banged away at the door and when Riddhima went to open it she was nearly pushed down by the bear hug to her legs. Balancing herself she knelt beside him with a smile and asked "Kya baat hai aaj mera chotu bahut khush hai?" He showed his wrist on which there was a star marked in red pen. "Aaj Ani sabse goboy tha, to miss ne Ani ko shar diya." Riddhima hugged him saying "Mujhe to pata hai mera chotu sabse good boy hai." Disengaging himself from her arms, he ran inside and exhibited the star proudly to nani and nanu.

Handing Ani's bag to Riddhima, kaka said "yeh lo bahu, main dus minute main aaya." When Riddhima asked him where he was going he just waved and went away.

Inside Ani was twirling around with his marked hand raised because his grandparents had also said he was a good boy. When his mama went to him and asked him to change and wash he refused saying that his star would be washed away and he wouldn't be able to show it to his dad and bhai. His nani came and started coaxing him to at least change his clothes. But he wouldn't hear any of it and started running around the hall shouting at the top of his voice.

In all the noise no one heard the little princess cry. It was only when Ani barged into the room demanding to see 'Pinshesh' that they heard her wail. Riddhima rushed in and picked the little one who was all red with the crying.

"Isliye kehti hoon tum sirf gudiya ke paas raha karo. Ghar ke baaki kaam ke liye aur log hain. Par tum meri baat kyon sunogi?" Padma admonished her daughter. Then pulling her grandson by the hand said "chalo hum log hall mein jaakar khelte hain, yahan gudiya bahut ro rahi hain." But the little one was too smart for her. "Mama paash rehna. Khelna nai." Came the instant reply.

R: Theek hain maa, aap jaakar Tom and Jerry cartoon dekho. Ani yahin rahega, mere paas.

That trick worked. The whirlwhind dashed out of the room and positioned himself on the sofa in front of the TV switching channels, till he came to his favourite one, cartoon network.
