Part 1
Akshat went into his mama's room and quietly peeped inside. Noticing that his nani wasn't there he went up to the crib to take a look at his cute little sis. He touched her cheek gently with a finger and then blew her a kiss saying "Bye princess." Then he moved to his mama and gently kissed her cheek.
Feeling his feather like lips, Riddhima opened her eyes and was surprised to see her betu ready in his school uniform. She tried to get up asking "Tum itne jaldi tayyar ho gaye?" Pushing her back on the bed he said "Aap lete rahiye. My toh sirf aapko bye karne aaya tha."
Just then his dad walked out of the bathroom drying his hair. Seeing his betu there he asked "Nashta kar liya betu?" Akshat nodded his head in affirmative but his face seemed somewhat dejected. Sitting down on the bed near Riddhima, Armaan pulled Akshat to him and asked "Kya baat hai?" Pouting his lips Akshat asked "Dad my princess ke saath kab kheloonga? Nani to mujhe uske paas hi jaane nahi deti."
"Bus kuch din aur" Armaan assured him. As the princess was still a little underweight the pediatrician had advised them to keep her secluded so that she didn't catch any infection. She requested that only the mother and one other person attend to the baby. Armaan explained this to him. He also told him that once the baby gained some more weight she would be out of danger of catching infection. Then they could all play with her. To please him Armaan said "Chalo aaj main tumhe school drop karta hoon. Mujhe bhi jaldi nikalna hai."
While Armaan got ready Akshu sat chatting with his mama. Then both dad and son left kissing her goodbye.
As she lay there she recollected her state of mind 2 weeks ago when she had left for the hospital. Though she had felt that their wedding anniversary day would bring her luck, in her heart of hearts, she was terrified. As she changed in this very room before leaving for the hospital, she hadn't been sure if she would return here. Armaan had been attending to the kids, having already packed her bag to be taken to the hospital.
She had gone around touching each and everything in the room and had finally picked up the frame on the side table. In the centre was a pic of herself smiling away and Armaan's arms around her neck from behind, his chin resting on her shoulder and his trademark dimpled smile in place. She remembered that the pic was taken during their honeymoon. On one side was a pic of Akshat on his sixth birthday hugging his dad, the day he came to know that he was his dad. On the other side was a pic of the little one, dressed as a safari hunter, on his first birthday, which had a jungle theme. She had kissed her favourite males in all the pics and had tears running down her cheeks when Armaan had come looking why she was taking so long.
Seeing her in tears, he had hugged her. Cupping her face in his palms and wiping her tears with his thumb he shook his head indicating that she shouldn't cry, while his own eyes were brimming. For once both had been reluctant to voice their fear, lest it should come true.
"Mummum nai khana, shkool nai jaana. Mama paash jaana" Ani's screaming reached her ears through closed doors and she was jerked back to the present. Riddhima knew that her mother was incapable of handling him alone in akka's absence.
Thinking of akka she wondered how she was now. The day she had come home from the hospital with her princess, akka had come with the aarti plate to welcome them. But Riddhima noticed how weak she had become in her absence. The next day on her and Armaan's insistence, akka had agreed to visit the doctor, who had recommended some pathological tests.
The test results had not only revealed that akka had diabetese but also that she had some chest infection. On the doctor's advise akka had been admitted in the hospital for further tests and treatment. Keeping in mind the doctor's warning that premature babies tended to catch infections very easily, everyone at home had decided that it was best that akka remain in the hospital till her infection was completely cured. Armaan was visiting her regularly with food etc. He had told them that akka was recovering well. But Riddhima would have liked to go the hospital and see for herself.
When Riddhima had spoken about going to the hospital, her mother had started yelling "are you out of your head? You want to risk your health for a servant?" Riddhima had lost her head at that.
R: Maa do you even know what you are talking? Akka is a member of our family. Akka has taken so much care of me during both my pregnancies, even more than you. She looks after the children as her own. If I'm practising today as a doctor it's only because she shouldered the complete responsibility of this house. Don't you ever dare to call her a servant. Otherwise I won't even remember that you are my mother.
"I was only thinking about the baby's health because when you visit a hospital, there are chances that you might pick up some germs. But if that woman is more important to you than your daughter, do as you please." Padma had replied in an even agrier tone.
Armaan had returned from the hospital just then and had heard their raised voices. Seeing him enter, Padma had walked out. Putting his arm around Riddhima, Armaan pulled her down beside him on the bed. He assured her that akka had recovered well and would be discharged in a day or two.
Riddhima came out of her thoughts hearing Ani's screams yet again. She had go and see what the matter was. The minute Ani saw her step out of her room, he ran to her and hugged her legs, with rivulets running down his cheeks. He had been strictly instructed not to barge into mama's room. And his nani, who remained with his mama and baby, throughout the day, made sure of that.
Riddhima was moved to tears seeing the child's condition. She couldn't pick him up. So she knelt down beside him and hugged him close. When his sobs subsided she pulled him a little away from herself and wiping his tears asked "Kya hua mere chotu ko? Kyon ro raha hai?"
Ani: shkool nahi jaana. Mama paash rehna.
From the time Riddhima had come from the hospital, he had been throwing tantrums. But today being Monday, the problem was more pronounced. Riddhima knew if she let him stay home today, it would become a daily affair. So she said "Chalo aaj mama chotu ko nashta khilayegi, aur dress karegi."
As she started feeding him she started pointing out the prizes and awards won by his bro and said "Ani ko bhi aisey cups jeetne hai na? Nahi to sab log bolenge Akshat ko kitne prizes mile hai. Ani ko ek bhi nahi mila. Tumhe prize chahiye ke nahi?"
"Ani fusht pize" came the reply with his mouth full.
R: ok Ani ko first prize milega, lekin uske liye usey school jana padega na?
He seemed to consider what she said seriously and then half heartedly shook his head in affirmative. After a few minutes she was waving him off to school. He was also waving back happily while his dadu was trying to get him to move forward. Just then she heard her mother calling out to her loudly. When she closed the door and went to her room he mother asked angrily "Kahan reh gayi thi? Gudiya kabse ro rahi hai. The doctor has told you na as far as possible remain in the room only? I don't understand how you can be so irresponsible."
"Maa, Princess is not my only child." Riddhima said trying to control her temper as advised by Armaan .
R:Akshat is old enough to understand about infection etc. so he's willing to stay away from us, but Ani is too small to understand anything."
Padma also remembered her son-in-law's explanation that Riddhima was going through hormonal changes after the delivery and was hence being short tempered. So she put her hand on her daughter's shoulder and very sweetly said "I'm telling you only for your own good. As a nurse I know how vulnerable premature babies are."
R: I understand mama. I need to find some in-between path. I don't want to distance Ani from me and increase his insecurity in trying to keep this baby fit.
The baby once again gave out a wail to remind her mama that she was hungry. Riddhima took her gudiya out of the crib and proceeded to feed her.
