"It's been two years now but the pain of losing you still cuts fresh wounds in my heart-- the memory vivid enough as it was just yesterday. But each passing day, it feels like the memory of you is slipping from my mind; your visits in my dreams less frequent. I hate going back to my cold, empty bed without your strong arms around me, the heady scent of you filling my senses. I miss how you would throw your head back laughing and give a loud, throaty laugh as we talked, your gentle hands clasping my own as you pulled me close in an embrace. I manage to muffle my cries in pillows, but Adi? He cries every night, his nightmares stealing his sleep, only quietening as I cradle him back to sleep. I know that he misses you terribly.
Why did fate have to be so cruel? Why did it take you away from us? From your family, that dreads every passing day without you. Where are you? Come back, I need you...I crave your love--"
A small hand pulled her kurti insistently. Khushi looked up from her letter, which had ink splatters and drops of water on it which carried the ink across the fibre of the paper, leaving a sad black trail in its wake. She dabbed her eyes quickly and gave the tiny figure a watery smile as she picked me up and sat him on her lap.
"Hey sweetheart, do you want something?"
Adi's tiny hand reached out to cup her cheek and his little finger caught a small teardrop, as he looked at his mother questioningly. Khushi felt something catch in her throat as she fought back another round of tears.
"Mama's absolutely okay, Adi. She just loves you so much, you know?" she assured him as she pulled his small torso towards her chest, burying her face in his neck. Her heart shattered for the millionth time as she realized he hadn't said it back. She pulled back and looked him fiercely in the eye.
"Adi, say you love Mama? Please?" For a moment, it seemed to Khushi, that he was going to say it back. But after some time of opening his mouth and struggling with words, he snapped his mouth shut. His tiny fist pulled his hair as he let out an almost inarticulate groan of frustration, his eyes glistening with tears.
"Hush, baby, it's okay. Take your time, Mama will always love you." she soothed him as she eased his fist out of his hair and hugged him again. "See, there's Tom and Jerry on T.V, want to watch?"
Khushi's heart surged as she saw her breath of life give her a huge, dimpled smile as he got off her lap and scampered to the other room. She sighed, as she turned back to her diary, as her pen scratched against the paper, adding her final sentence.
"I will wait for you tonight. I love you, Dhruv."
