CHAPTER 3

Arjun and Shree walked towards the SUV. Arjun got into the driver seat and saw Riya leaning against the door on the passenger side, outside the vehicle. He knocked at the window and Riya turned around, to realize that Arjun was already inside.

Both Shree and Riya reached for the handle of the door at a time. She looked at him. He looked at the handle first and then at her. She immediately pointed at the seat; said, "All yours," with a dimpled smile and left to occupy the seat at the back. Shree got in and Arjun started the SUV.

"Nisha ke baare mein aur kuch mila Shree?" Arjun asked Shree who was busy searching about Nisha.

"Sir, mila hain.." he said and turned around to look at Riya. He hesitated to talk about the case in front of a third person and also that third person was related to the case.

She looked at Shree and said, "Agar woh ramp wali mishap ke baare mein hain tho, main jaanti hoon."

"Kya wahin hain Shree?" Arjun asked.

"Yes, sir. Uske gaayab hone ka reason pata chala hain, shaayad. Ek show mein, woh ramp ke upar phisal gayi thi, aur uske heels ke niche aneki vajehse uski dress buri tarah se phat gayi. Bahut bezati huyi thi sir. Ye publicize hua ki usne drugs le rakhi thi ya shaayad pi rakhi thi, jiski vajehse woh ramp pe usne apna control kho diya. Kyunki woh uss evening ki show stopper thi woh pura show hi flop hua aur uss fashion house ko bahut bada nuksaan hua. Nisha baar baar kahan ki usne show se pehle koi drugs nahin liya tha lekin, kyunki ye baat sabhi jaante the ki woh usually drugs leti thi, kisine uski baat nahin mani. Media mein bahut bada tamasha hua, aur woh kisiko bina bataye gaayab ho gayi," Shree told Arjun everything he could find out from several news paper articles that were written on her at the time of the controversy. Shree added, "Kahani bahut filmy hain, kyun sir?"

"Zindagi hain.." Arjun and Riya said in unison.

Shree looked at the both of them startled.

Riya turned her head away and pretended to look at something on the road.

Both remained silent for a moment.

"Kahani filmy nahin hain Shree. Nisha ki zindagi hain. Itna kuch hone ke bavajood woh iss fashion ki duniya mein vaapas aayi hain," Arjun said as they entered Mumbai.

"Fashion ki duniya mein aisa hota rehta hain. Films based on such stories.. they aren't completely false and at the same time aren't the complete truth," Riya said in a very serious tone.

Since she had taken the initiative to intervene, Shree decided to ask a few questions despite Arjun's presence, "So ek Forensic investigation and Applied criminology ke graduate ka fashion ke duniya se kya lena dena?"

Arjun shot him a glare and Shree gulped.

Riya who was completely ignorant of Arjun's displeasure answered Shree's question with a smile, "Mere Jiju ussi fashion house mein kaam karte hain. Isiliye thoda bahut idea hain, fashion world ka aur uss fashion house ka bhi.. Aur kuch poochna hain?"

"Ji nahin.." Shree couldn't dare to ask another question, not after Arjun's glare.

Arjun knew that Poonam's husband worked for a fashion house, but couldn't remember which one it was. Now, he did, 'The RK group'.

2:00AM…

The SUV came to a halt in front of a gated community. Rghu sir's place was a long way ahead of Nisha's place and Nisha was their priority at the moment. So Arjun decided to take Riya with them.

Before unbuckling his seat belt Arjun said, "Tum yahin.." to be interrupted by Riya, "Main aa rahin hoon. Raat ke do baje aap log ek ladki ki ghar jaa rahe hain pooch taach ke liye. Moreover, she knows me so she'll be more comfortable talking in front of me. Vaise bhi mein itni raat ko aise akele gaadi mein baithkar aap logon ka intezaar nahin karungi."

"Darr lag raha hain?" he asked taunting her. Arjun knew what tactics would work with her.

She glared at him and said, "Whatever. Jayiye aap log. Main yahin intezaar karungi."

"Theek hain. Shree let's go," he said to Shree.

Arjun knocked at the glass window of the security guard's cabin, at one end of the gate. He had managed to slip into deep sleep despite the bright light in the room. The poor guard, woke up from his slumber and looked around panicking.

"Yahaan," Shree said, grabbing the watchman's attention.

He lifted the lower part of the glass and asked, "Kaun ho tum log?"

"ETF," Arjun said showing his ID.

The watchman looked at the card for a moment and said, "Ek minute saab."

He got up from his place and opened the gate for them. He let them in through the smaller gate in the huge one.

"Ye gate kab close karte ho?" Arjun asked the watchman.

"Ye bada wala hamesha bandh rehta hain saab. Jab badi gaadiya aati hain tabhi kholta hoon. Sabhi log iss gate se hi andar aate hain," he said pointing at the gate through which Arjun and Shree had just come in.

"Register maintain karte ho?" Arjun asked.

"Haan saab. Yahan ka secretary bahut strict hain. Main shaam ko che baje aata hoon saab. Subah Mangesh naam ka ek aur aadmi hota hain yahaan," he said.

"Nisha Kapoor se milne koi aaya tha aaj?"

"Nishaji? Nahin saab. Lekin aaj Nisha madam tho ghar aayi hi nahin," he said, which left Arjun and Shree shocked.

"Kya matlab?"

"Nahin saab. Woh nahin aayi," he said handing them over the register.

Arjun went through it and returned it to him.

"Nisha ka ghar kis block mein hain?" Shree asked the guard.

"Block-B saab, 402 flat hain saab. Uss floor pew oh akeli rehti hain. Naye flats hain sir, issilye kuch flats abhi bhi khali hain," the watchman gave them the other details.

Arjun and Shree were about to walk towards the flats when he heard a quarrel outside.

Shree and Arjun hurried outside to see what was wrong.

Two drunkards were quarreling right in front of their SUV and Arjun saw Riya giving the two of them horrified looks. He saw her wiping her tears away. She was crying, he realized. Rohan seemed to be one of her best friends. She was just trying to be brave in front of him, like she always did. Some people never change, he thought. But, he felt a surge of sympathy for her. Why was he still angry on her? It's been three years and he still remembered those words..

"Jis kisi ko bhi batana tha maine bata diya hain Di. Main jaa rahin hoon bas," Riya said and stuffed her belongings in her bag.

"Lekin Ri, aaj hi nikalne ki kya zaroorat thi tumhe? Shaadi tho aaj hi huyi hain na.. Do din ruk ke usse batake jaati tum. Aur tumne tho kahan tha ki tum Arjun ko khud bataogi. Lekin abhi tak bataya kyun nahin?" Poonam questioned her.

"Woh.. shaadi ke preparations mein hum itna busy the.. Aur main Arjun aur Roshni ko bevajeh disturb nahin karna chahti thi.. issiliye.."

"Tum disturb nahin karna chahti thi, ya phir mujhe batana zaroori nahin samjha?" he asked her in a voice filled with anger.

Riya looked at him for a moment and he felt he saw tears in her eyes. But, anger and the same stubborn attitude replaced them immediately, "Haan Arjun, batana zaroori nahin samjha. Kyun? Tum phirse mera mazaak udaoge! Phir se kahoge ki main ek police officer ban ne ki laayak nahin hoon. Kabhi bhi ek shabd bhi mere baare acha kahan hain tumne? Nahin..! Isiliye tumhe batane se bhi kya faida..?"

"You know what Riya? Tumhari issi attitude se mujhe nafrat hain. Tumhe kisiki parva bhi nahin hain. Jo mann main aaye bolti raho, karti raho. Lekin ek din tumhari iss irresponsibility, iss ghamand ki vajeh se tum pachtaaogi. Dekhna.. Khair agar mujhe baatana tum zaroori nahin samajhti ho, main bhi tumhare baare mein sochna zaroori nahin samajhta hoon. Good bye. Iss khushi ke mauke pe main tumhari vajeh se apna mood spoil nahin karna chahta hoon," saying so he had stormed out of her room.

"Sir?" Arjun was brought to his senses by Shree, "Unhe rokey?"

"Dekh kya rahe ho tum?" Arjun said turning towards the watchman, "Pakdo usse."

Arjun, Shree and the watchman managed to drive the drunkards away, before their fight became too serious. The drunkards walked away in opposite directions.

Arjun walked towards the SUV and asked her, "Are you fine?"

"I'm fine," she said turning her face away.

Arjun then walked back to the watchman and asked him, "Uss flat ke owners yahin rehte hain ya..?"

"Haan saab issi flats mein rehte hain, Block-A mein, 201 mein. Mujhe achi tarah se yaad hain. Ek baar unke beech kuch jhagda bhi hua tha.. Nisha madam ke ghar tarah tarah ke log aate the.. usiko lekar."

Arjun and Shree looked at each other. Now they could enter the house. All they had to do was obtain the keys from the flat owners.

Arjun and Shree were now inside the house searching the rooms for any evidence they could find.

"Sir! Ye dekhiye iss cupboard ke taale ko thoda gaya hain," Shree said pointing at the handle dangling from the door.

Rjun opened the cupboard and searched it.. but couldn't find anything suspicious.

"Hamse pehle yahaan koi zaroor aaya hoga sir," Shree said.

"Haan aur uske paas iss ghar ki chabiyaan thi. Main door ke paas forced entry ke koi bhi nishaan nahin hain. Nisha kareeb che baje ko Pune se nikli thi. Aur che baje se ye watchman duty par hain. Usne tho Nisha ko nahin dekha hain. Ya phir usse milne koi aaya tha.. Lekin agar Nisha isme mili huyi hain aur usine uss aadmi ko iss ghar ki chabiyan di tho usne iss locked cupboard ki chabiyaan kyun nahin di usse?" Arjun wondered aloud.

"Rohan ka khoon aur isme mein kya connection ho sakti hain sir? Aur aisa kya tha iss cupboard mein jisse woh aadmi doondh raha tha?" Shree asked.

"Wahin tho hamein pata lagana hain Shree. Iss case ki chaabi shayad wahin hain.." Arjun said his eyes focused on the broken lock!
