CHAPTER 4

Shree tried to open the other cupboard adjacent to the one they had just checked. It wasn't locked!

"Iska matlab zaroor uss cupboard mein kuch important tha, jisse Nisha ne chupkar rakha.." Arjun said pointing at the cupboard with the broken lock.

"Par lagta hain iss cupboard se kuch bhi chori nahin hua hain," Shree said.

Arjun checked the cupboard again; there was no way to find out if anything was stolen. There was only one locker in the cupboard, that seemed to be intact. Arjun tried to open it but it didn't budge.

"Aisa kya tha usme…?" Arjun wondered. He called Rathore, "Rathore, Nisha apne ghar se gaayab hain. Photo shoot se nikalne ke baad woh apne ghar waapas aayi hi nahin.."

"Kya? Yahan se bhi kuch nahin mila! Highway pe kisine dhyan bhi nahin diya.. Lash phekte waqt agar kisine dekha hoga tho bhi, kisne dekha hain kisse pata. Khair main uske ghar pe nazar rakhne ki orders de deta hoon. Kal subah office mein milte hain," Rathore said and cut the call.

Arjun and Shree searched the rest of the house, but in vain. It was evident that the person who entered the house was searching for something and he definitely wasn't a thief. If it was a thief who entered the house, he wouldn't leave the lockers intact, definitely not!

Arjun and Shree returned to the SUV after making sure that the house was kept under police watch. It was around 3:00 AM.

They reached the SUV to see that Riya was standing outside the SUV in the cold, waiting for them, "Nisha nahin thi..?" she asked concerned.

"Nahin thi. Vaise Riya, are you sure Rohan tumse milne nahin aane waala tha?" Arjun asked as he signaled her to get in.

Riya rolled her eyes and said, "Kitni baar kahun main? Woh mujhse milne nahin aa raha tha.."

"Tho phir usne sirf tumhra naam kyun liya? Why?" he asked again.

Riya got into the vehicle and closed the door, "Main nahin jaanti..!"

Just then Arjun received a call. It was Poonam. Arjun handed the phone to Riya and said, "Poonam ka call hain. Baat karo." She took the phone and said, "Hello Di.." when her sister lashed out her, hearing her voice.

Poonam: Bilkul ziddi ho na tum! Tumse ye ummeed nahin thi Riya.. Kam se kam mujhe tho bata sakti thi..?

Riya: Dad ne bata diya…?

Poonam: Mama ko shaanth karne ke liye batana pada.. Tumhari band tho bajne waali hain.. Khair woh chodo.. Rohan ke baare mein kya sun rahin hoon????

Riya frowned, "Arjun.. tum logon ne Rohan ke maut ke baare mein unke gharwalon ko bata diya hain?" she asked Arjun.

"Of course.. kyun?" Arjun asked. Shree was only listening to them very curiosly. It was the first time he was meeting someone who was very close to Arjun personally and seemed to irritate him as well. He decided to see and enjoy..

"Kuch nahin. Bas Di pooch rahin thi.. Unhe bataun iske baare mein?" she asked.

Arjun was a little surprised to see Riya asking him what to do. The reason being the very fact that the Riya he knew was a person who acted at her will and wish no matter what the situation was. And now, she was asking him! That was even more shocking.

Arjun thought for a moment, "Nahin. Agar zaroorat pade tho main khud Sahil se baat karunga."

"Jiju se? Kya unhe pata hain?"

"Nahin Rohan ke employers ko bhi official information nahin di gayi hain," he said.

Riya nodded and returned to her conversation with her sister.

Riya: Aapko kaise pata?

Poonam: Rohan ki behen ne call kiya tha! Uski haalat tho bahut kharab hain. Main soch rahin hoon usse milne aa jaun ek baar. Dost jo hain, mujhse dekha nahin jaa raha hain. Keh rahin thi woh tumse milne aane wala tha yahaan.. chakkar kya hain? Aur Arjun..? ETF ne take up kiya hain kya case ko?

Riya: Main woh sab nahin bata sakti Di.. Aap ghar mein kuch mat batayiye.. kal mein khud bataungi..

Poonam: *sighs* Vaise... tum theek ho..?

Riya: Yeah.. par dukh tho bahut ho raha hain. Bhale hi mera senior tha.. lekin tum bhi jaanti ho Di we were such good friends.. I don't know.. Mujhe abhi bhi yakeen nahin aata hain ki..

Poonam: Hmm.. Ghar jaane ke baad call karo.. theek hain?

Riya: Sure.. bye..

"Mamaji ke yahaan jaa rahe hain?" she asked as she returned the mobile to Arjun.

"Haan." Arjun gave her a monosyllabic answer.

All three of them were quiet during the rest of the journey.

The SUV came to halt and Riya knew she had to get down now. She was about to ask Arjun if he would come in, but since Shree was with them she chose not to.

"Main Raghu sir ko call.." Arjun wasn't allowed to complete his sentence, "No need Arjun. Main chali jaungi."

"Are you sure?" Arjun asked sarcastically.

"Whatever.." Riya said and stormed past the SUV, with her bags.

Shree's eyes widened in disbelief, "Thank you bhi nahin bola.." he said aloud.

Arjun looked at Shree and said, "Uski aadat nahin hain usse." He turned the SUV around and they left the place.

"Lagta hain kaafi ache se jaante hain hamare ACP Khadoos usse. Unse bhi akdoo nikli hain ye.." Shree thought as a tiny smile appeared on his lips.

Riya rang the door bell; her fingers crossed waiting for the tsunami to hit her.

The door opened but she could see no one in front of her, "Sheen.." she guessed.

She stepped in and immediately pounced at the girl standing behind the door with a broad smile on her face, "Sheen!!!!"

"Riya! Kaisi ho???" Sheen asked hugging her.

"Main theek hoon. Tum abhi tak soyi nahin?"

"Of course not! Tumhare aaneki khabar sunke, so hi nahin paayi..! Papa ne tumhare appointment ke baare mein bataya. Ek baat samajh mein nahin aati hain.. Tum wahan research kar rahin thi ya Police ke saath work kar rahin thi?" Sheen rained her questions upon her.

"Tumhe ye sab..?"

"Dad aur main baat kar rahe the, tumhare baare mein.."

"It's all a part of my 'research' dear," Riya said and winked at Sheen, "Woh sab baad mein. Maami kahan hain?" she asked a little sacred.

Sheen giggled, "Hall mein Papa ke saath."

Riya entered the hall to find her uncle and aunt arguing about something. Seeing her come in, "Riya! Tum aa gayi..? Arjun aaya tha?" Raghu said taking her bags.

Riya collapsed in the couch, "Haan aaya tha. Woh uske team ka ek aur member bhi tha.. Shayad Shree hain uska naam."

"Shree? Koi case tha kya?" he asked sensing something was indeed wrong.

Riya sighed and said, "Haan isiliye der ho gayi. Itni der ETF ke SUV mein wait karte karte thak gayi!"

"Aadat daldo. ETF jo join karogi tum.." Raghu said.

"Hmmm.." Riya sighed a little worried.

"Riya, tumne pura ek saal kaam kiya hain field mein. Woh India mein nahin kiya hain, that's not the issue at all! You completed your studies a year back; uske baad ek pura saal field work.. you've enough trainining too. Chaar mahine pehle, agar woh mission successful hua tha.. tho tumhari vajehse. Kitni mehnat ki hain. I think you deserve to be there. I'm sure tumhari Maa samjhegi tumhe. Kal subah Coelo tumhe officially ETF mein introduce karne waala hain," Raghu said firmly.

"Mamma samjhegi na. Dad ke saath jo hua uske baad Mamma tho meri decision ke sakt khilaf thi. Par main ye sab.." Riya stopped as she felt her aunt's hand on hers.

"Ek Maa jo hain woh," her aunt said, "Ghabrahat tho hogi. Tum phikar mat karo. Sab kuch theek ho jaayega. Aise mat dekho. Main tumhe nahin daatungi aise ghar se bhagne ke liye. Lekin ek baat poochu main? Karan jaanta hain iske baare mein? Kal tum dono ki shaadi pakki hone waali hain. Uske parivaar ka kya?"

"Maine Karan se baat ki hain iske baare mein. Uncle doesn't seem to have a problem. Karan ne bhi na nahin kahan. Par woh London waapas jane wala hain. Maine keh diya ki main yahin rahungi. Shaayd usse pehle hi engagement ho jaayegi."

"Great, tumhare sasural mein bhi kisiko problem nahin hain.. Everything will be fine," Raghu said. He then called Riya's father and informed him that Riya had reached their place safely.

Riya went to her room, quickly changed her dress and went to sleep, as she was exhausted. She had completely forgotten about her mobile that was in her bag waiting to be charged.

A glimpse from the past:

Four years back:

"Isse pyaar ho gaya hain," Poonam said giggling.

Riya dropped her spoon and looked at her sister, stunned, "Kisse???"

"Aur kisse. Arjun ko!" Poonam said throwing a cushion at Arjun who was busy ignoring them.

Arjun hurled the cushion back at Poonam and said, "Aman ne bataya?"

"Haan… kaun hain woh? Suna hain usne proposal accept bhi kar diya.." Poonam said grinning at him.

"Dekhlunga usse.." Arjun said getting up from his place, picking up his mobile.

"Koi pagal hi hogi," Riya remarked.

Arjun stopped and shot her a glare, "Kya kahan tumne?"

Riya smiled and said, "Koi pagal hi hogi.. tumse jo pyaar ho gaya hain." Poonam face palmed, "Phir shuru ho gaye."

"Pagal hi sahi. Kam se kam tumhari tarah tho nahin hain," he gave her a curt reply.

Riya stopped smiling, "Utna gussa mat ho.. Main uski burayi nahin kar rahin hoon. Sach bol rahin hoon. Aise hi gussa karoge na har baat ke liye, bhaag jaayegi woh."

"Tumhe itna phikar kyun? Roshni ko main samhaloonga, tum apne custard ko samhalo. Spoon niche gir gaya hain tumhari.." Arjun said pointing at the spoon on the floor.

"Shock jo laga mujhe. Tum aur pyaar. Next to impossible tha.. Pata nahin ab kya hoga.. Bechari Roshni.. Roshni hi hain na uska naam?" Riya said taunting him.

"Uska naam bhi mat lo tum.." Arjun was pissed. He didn't like Riya making fun of him and Roshni.

"Roshni.. Roshni.. Roshni.. Ye lo teen baar kahan maine.. Kya karloge?" she challenged.

"Socha tha usse yahaan laaunga aur sabse milvaunga.. Lekin ab lagta hain mujhe hi yahaan aana nahin chahiye tha," he said, his voice hinting anger.

Riya was a little surprised, "Ye gussa kyun ho gaya hain?" she thought.

Arjun always returned her taunts and their silly fights were a must whenever he visited them. He used to scold her for being irresponsible and arrogant. She used to yell at him for being the stubborn guy he was!

But, today he didn't return her taunt; rather he insulted her. He said Roshni was much better person than her. She didn't really mind it, because it was Arjun!

She put the custard bowl aside and got up, "Arjun, itna overreact mat karo okay. Ab tum drama kar rahe ho. Chill.."

"Tumse baat karna hi bekaar hain," he said without looking at Riya, "Poonam main jaa raha hoon. Aunty se kehna ki main phir kabhi aaunga."

Poonam sighed and shook her head, "Chalo mere saath."

She took him out of the room leaving Riya standing there hurt, for the first time ever, "Woh mujhse aise baat kaise kar sakta hain? Main Roshni kuch bura bhala thodi keh rahi thi. Main bas mazaak kar rahin thi. Utna bhi hak nahin banta hain kya mera? Mujhe hurt kardiya.. Ab usse maafi maangna hi hoga. Aane do usse.."

Poonam outside the room, calmed Arjun, "Arjun, tum bhi jaante ho uske baare mein. Woh sirf mazaak kar rahin thi. Tumhe itna gussa nahin hona chahiye tha."

Arjun remained quiet for a moment, "Jaanta hoon. It's just that.."

"Apni girl friend ke upar mazaak pasand nahin.. right? Getting possessive.." Poonam started teasing him.

Arjun rolled his eyes, "Enough Poonam! Tum jaanti ho mujhe mazaak pasand nahin! Agar tum log aise hi karne waale ho tho main usse yahaan nahin laaunga," he said seriously.

"Theek hain, theek hain sorry! Lekin usse zaroor lana..! Apna khyal rakhna. Be safe okay?" Poonam smiled at him and Arjun returned her smile. He once peeked into the room and saw Riya busy, finishing her custard. He assumed that she was fine, "Apni Riya hi tho hain.. Bura nahin maanegi.." he thought and left, unaware of the fact that Riya was actually waiting for his apology…

Riya woke up to a piercing scream by Sheen..

"Kya hua???" she yelled as she got up with a start.

"Tumhe Comissioner se milne jaana hain. Uthogi nahin? Kabse utha rahin hoon!" Sheen said pulling her from the bed.

"Ruko!!! Aa rahin hoon.." Riya said yawning.

She walked towards her bag, pulled out her mobile phone and the charger.

She plugged the charger and switched her mobile on.

It took a few seconds for it to start.

"5 new messages; 8 missed calls" flashed on the screen.

"Damn," she thought and checked her missed calls.

"3 ghar se.. 2.. ROHAN???" she was shocked. He called her at around 9:45PM around the same time she had started from her sister's place. She remembered that her mobile was in a silent mode that entire evening, but had no idea when it actually lost its power. She had forgotten to check it until she met Arjun.

And now she finds out that Rohan had indeed called her! So was he coming to meet her? She immediately checked her messages; there was one from Rohan!

Rohan: I need your help! I can't tell you abt dat on phone. Will meet u in person.. Jo kuch bhi hua sahi nahin hua. Nisha bekasoor hain.. Woh prove karne ke liye mujhe tumhari madad chahiye..

"What the…!" Riya rubbed her eyes and read the message again. She called Arjun immediately.

"Hello Arjun. Rohan mujhse hi milne aane waala tha! He wasn't lying!!!" Riya said as soon as he received the call.

"Kya? Theek hain main tumhe pick karne aadhe ghante mein pahuchta hoon. Tumhe ETF office aana hoga mere saath," he said firmly.

"Sure. I'll be ready," Riya said and cut the call.

She then dialed the Comissioner's number, "Hello sir?"
