Virat was equally astonished. He thought about her the whole night. "Manvi" "Why haven't I noticed her before?" "Why does she care about me, hasn't she always hated me??" "What was she saying about father abandoning daughter?" The more he though the more puzzled he became. He rolled in his sleep all night, unable to stop thinking about the conversation with her over and over. He could not mistake the pain in her eyes, for nobody could understand abandonment more than him. A lot more people have left than enter his life. First his father, whom he loved the most dies, then the grandfather whom he adored next to his father drifted apart in the name of discipline and then Maya whom he loved and trusted blindly, used him in every possible way and dumped him for his best friend in the most unceremonious way. Virat's problem was that he never owned up or acknowledged the people he missed. He could never bear the fact that the people whom he loved more than his life could just leave him and never return. Instead, he would escape the reality. He always tried to continue life as if nothing happened and this lead to the formation of a deep hollow within him. It grew larger with every hurdle and hurt he suffered and finally the he had to resort to drugs and alcohols to calm his agitated and disturbed mind. To prevent him for getting sucked into the darkness and vacuum within, he sought to forget the reality and relieve himself of his misery temporarily. He made a lot of friends- guys and girls, some good and some bad but he never opened up to anyone. He tried to lose himself in the day to day chatter and noise. Superficially he seemed jovial and friendly and always laughed, but he never let anyone know of the storm building up inside him.
It was almost morning. He gave up on sleep and went to freshen up. He looked at the himself in the mirror. He indeed did look sick; the comments about his appearance started bothering him. He shaved off him beard, cleaned himself up and dressed presentably after a very long time. Satisfied at his appearance now, he was stepping out of his room but suddenly stopped "What the hell Virat!! Why are her comments affecting you? Are you doing things because of that crazy bandariya now??" He turned to go back inside and before he could, Jeevika saw him and came upto him smiling : "Virat! you are looking so much better. My handsome and Dashing devar !" Viren also chimed in with appreciation happy to see Virat giving attention to himself again. His eyes unknowingly waited for Manvi to come.
Jeevika's phone rang and it was Manvi "Di, I am waiting outside, please come down fast, we need to go and study for the exam. I am waiting."
Jeevika: "Manvi, abhi toh bahut time hai, come on up inside, we will have breakfast and leave."
Manvi refused to come up and this continued for the next few days. She avoided coming in front of Virat. She hated that he brought out all the painful memories of her childhood and hated it even more that she unconsciously spoke to him about her father. She had never spoken about her parents in front of anyone, not even Jeevika. She hated the influence he had on her that night, although just for a few minutes. She broke down and cried uncontrollably after what happened that night. After recomposing herself, Manvi being Manvi, shrugged off the whole event as a random episode. She thought she has been very stressed out due to finals leading up to her bursting out on Virat. But she could not get the image of Virat sitting desolate in that balcony out of her head.
In the next days, Virat tried to inquire Jeevika about Manvi's parents.
Jeevika: "All I know is her mom died of cancer and her father was killed in a car crash soon after. She wanted to become a doctor to defeat cancer, the deadly disease that took her mom away and she does not like to talk about anything else from her past."
Manvi also inquired casually if Virat said anything about her "Why would Virat say anything about you Mannu? Ohh yaa, he was asking about your parents yesterday. Mannu, you know, he is feeling much better now. I was so worried looking at him in that sorry state when he came back" "He is eating well and is even talking a little bit" Manvi tried to ask more but Jeevika was way too excited about her wedding and India trip. Her parents were coming tomorrow and all of them were leaving to India the day after.
Manvi was forced to come and stay with Jeevika a day before they left for India. Madan chachu and Pinky chachi who loved Manvi as much as Jeevika wanted her help with last minute shopping and packing before they all left for India. They had shopped the whole day and after, packed up everything, all set for their flight the next day morning. Manvi could not sleep that night and neither could Virat. Virat tried to talk with her a couple of times in the day but Manvi ignored him as if she did not hear anything he said. Manvi went out of her room to get some water and she passed the balcony; something pulled her towards it. For some reason, she expected Virat to be sitting there and was disappointed when she didn't see him there. She went and sat in the same position Virat was sitting the last time she was in there. She could not understand the reason for her own actions- Why was she drawn here, and why couldn't she forget him. As she was lost in her million thoughts, a tall figure walked into there. He was taken back seeing her in that position.
Startling her he asked "What are you doing here??"
Manvi raised her head and looked at him. He was drawn into the shiny spark present in her dove shaped eyes. She was not surprised to see him there at all; she was infact expecting him to come there. She looked at his eyes which were now filled with a lot of questions.
"It is cold out here" he added looking at her dressed in pjs and a spaghetti top.
After a few minutes, "Can't sleep??" he asked, really wanting her to break her silence. He wanted to talk to her, know more about her.
Manvi ignored not in a mood for small talk.
"My dad died when I young too" he stated matter-of-factly. " I haven't gotten over it yet" he confessed.
Manvi: "You don't know anything about me. Don't act as if you do. I was just stressed out the other day and so blabbered random things. Don't rack you pea-sized brain over it."
Virat smirked: "Really? Waise. How do I seem today? How is my face? My eyes?? Do I seem energetic enough?? What about my soul?? Dr. Manvi.." stressing at 'Dr. Manvi'
Manvi had reacted enough the other day. She chose to stay calm and ignore his taunt: "I don't care about any of those. Baad me gaye tum aur tumara soul, I give a damn so stop flattering yourself." saying this she got up to leave from there. She started experiencing all those feelings that she had no control over. She wanted to leave before they got the better of her.
Virat who was sitting at the door of the balcony said: "Ok fine. Good night sweetheart" giving a wicked half smile. He took out a cigarette and started to light it. He was about to take a puff, but before he could, it was snatched away and put off with outrage.
Virat: "Excuse me!!!!! Tumhari problem kya hai? I thought you gave a damn." He said the last part comically stressing out each word imitating her from a few minutes ago.
Manvi was boiling with anger; she looked exactly like the other night- blood shot eyes, flaring nostrils, grinding teeth, throwing piercing stares. She knew what Virat was doing and hated his affect on her. She didn't want to care about him but she just realized that she hasn't cared more about anyone else in her recent past. She gulped her words and stormed out of there. She came back briefly for a second and snatched the rest of the cigarette pack before she locked herself in.
Virat chuckled.
