Virat! she exclaimed. "This is so beautiful! I can see the entire city from here"
It was the month of august in New York, perfect weather; not too hot, not too cold. The entire skyline was visible from the terrace. It was about midnight but the city seemed as lively as ever. Virat kept looking at his wife, he loved the way she got so excited about such small things. She looked extremely beautiful today. Manvi was about five and half feet tall, had a small frame, perfect figure and curves. Today, she was wearing a pink saree with golden border that he gifted to her on her last birthday. Manvi always looked elegant and sexy; the only ornaments she was wearing were a mangalsutra around her neck, small golden studs on her ears, pink and gold bangles and a diamond ring on her right hand which was engraved with Virat's name inside. She had a small bindi on her forehead and the sindoor on her maang was mostly covered by her side fringes. She had long black hair which was left open today. Manvi was in her final year of medical school at John Hopkins, one of the top schools in the country. She had a busy schedule and normally never got time to dress up; her normal attire was jeans and t-shirt and she hardly got about 10 min in the morning to get ready and out of the house; Virat always teased her about it. But today was a special day and she wanted to dress-up for Virat. As Manvi lived in New York most of her adult life, she was not used to dressing up in traditional clothes; but she knew Virat liked it when she wore a saree, she also knew he liked her long hair. So there she was all decked up, looking pretty and hot for her beloved.
She was still looking at the view with her wide sparkly eyes, her hands on the rails of the wall, breathing in the pleasant wave of air that was blowing through her soft tresses. She was then lost in the million stars in the sky; the moon was crescent; her head and her whole body was tilting back trying to lock the whole picture in her heart. Virat gently hugged her from behind, his hands on her waist and turned her to face him. As they looked into each other's eyes, it was the perfect picture- picture of love, true love.
Virat in a low husky voice: " Kaha thi hum? Ithna dher kar diya aur woh bhi aaj, I missed you!" saying that he enveloped her into a passionate tight hug.
Manvi slightly smiling and in a sweet voice: "Acha? It didn't look like you were missing me in the party. Kitne masti meh they tum vaha. Huh?"
Hearing this Virat broke the hug and with a wink: "Ohh.. woh sab toh clients ko entertain karne key liya karna padtha hai meri jaan"
Manvi pretending to be slightly angry said: "Acha? Aure muje entertain kaun karege?"
Virat: "Entertain?? Hmmm''" taking the cue, he leaned in for a soft and tender kiss and then touching her forehead with his, he let out a very naughty smile to leave manvi blushing.
Manvi: "Virat, kitna acha hota na agar yeh pal aise hi tham jaaye..yeh sitare, yeh hawayein, yeh nazara; aur tum..aur mein..yaha..aise..hamesha key liye.."
Virat: "Hamesha kha mujhe nahi patha par give me a minute.." he ran down to the elevator and returned with a blanket which spread out in a corner. Manvi just stood dazzled as he poured out the wine and looked at her with his arms extended inviting her into his arms.
So there they lay on that terrace- making love, talking, teasing, laughing under the stars. Virat soon slipped into a deep slumber in her lap. Manvi looked at her sleeping husband and she felt like the luckiest girl on earth having him there with her. But, she thought about how much she hated him when they first met and how different both of them were when they first met.
She first met Virat through Jeevika or 'Di' that's how she liked to call her, her best friend. Jeevika and Viren were childhood sweethearts. Viren had come to New York when he was 7 years old, with his Swamini bua. Virat, his younger brother however stayed back with his mom and dadaji in India. Viren loved his brother endlessly and he wanted him to come and study with him in US. Viren knew Virat was good at software and computers, so he put all his effort into convincing him to focus on his career. Frankly, virat did not care but he loved his brother and did everything he was asked to do. After coming to US, he was free from the rules and restrictions of home so his life had no limits. Virat was very smart and he could get through exams and college with minimum or no effort at all. Even though Viren tried to keep Virat straight, he fell into bad company. He had no goal or ambition.
Manvi was exactly opposite though, she did not come from a big family, she was infact an orphan. The only person in her life was Jeevika. Jeevika and Manvi went to medical school together. Manvi's dad Anand Chaudary had eloped with her mom at a very young age; they were settled in New York and he became very affluent as he was a very good businessman. He had amassed large wealth in a short time and he was very happy in his small little world- his wife, his princess Mannu and him. Fate had other plans for him. When Manvi was 10 years old, her mom got diagnosed with blood cancer, her dad took care of both his daughter and his wife with utmost devotion. All his prayers and good wishes did not save her. She became terminally ill and ultimately died when Manvi was 12. That was when Manvi decided she wanted to become a doctor, a cancer specialist; she would cure cancer. Anand Chaudary whose whole life revolved around his wife did not know how to deal with his wife's death. He lost his way; he drank, he smoked and one night, he got into a tragic fatal car accident. He was driving drunk. Losing her parents was not at all sudden for Manvi. She lost her mom when she started going for chemo sessions, it was a nightmare for her to watch her mom like that- helpless and fragile. Her dad was so involved in her health issues that he ignored the effects of all the happenings on his little princess. She first watched her mom being killed by cancer slowly and then after her mom, she had to witness her dad out of control, drunk, helplessly pathetic, ending up killing himself in a way.
Her painful train of thought was disturbed when she saw Virat stirring in his sleep. It was about 4:00 in the morning and she saw him slowly opening his eyes. He looked at her, realizing he was lying in her lap and smiled sleepily with a big yawn and stretch.
Manvi: "Good morning sleeping beauty!" she teased him.
Virat smiling some more and gently with his hands brought her face closer to his without moving an inch. Her long hair was all over Virats face: "Apni husband to good morning kiss nahi dogi?"
Before he finished his sentence, he had a big sneeze and with that he got up and looked at Manvi who was trying not to smile."Manvi, tum poori raat soyi nahi? chalo ghar chalthe hain, thank god today is saturday."
Manvi: "Virat, actually mujhe aaj hospital jana padega, woh kal raat ki emergency case ka follow up karna hai. Important hai, par 3-4 gante mein vapas aajaongi."
Virat lowered his head and let out a hmphhh: "Manvi, kyu sara duniya ki zhimmedhari apni nanni si jaan pe dalthi ho? huh? anyways I know how long your 3-4 hours are, you will disappear until the night, anyways lets go so that you catch atleast a couple of hours of sleep"
With this, both of them drove home and Manvi went inside to open their apartment door while Virat went to park the car. As she turned towards her home, she dropped her keys and stood dumbfound looking at the two people waiting at her door. Jeevika di and Viren bhai!!!
