CHAPTER TWO

It was a long day. Arnav stepped at the door of Shantivan and impatiently waited for HP to get the door at his bell. He entered the house thinking it to be lost in peaceful slumber but his steps were cut short. A lamp in the living room was on and his Di was sitting at the couch, carelessly flipping through some magazine. Arnav checked his watch. 12:45 it showed. "Di? You're still awake?" he asked all curiously. Ignoring his question, Anjali kept the magazine back on the table and turned towards the kitchen. "Payal Ji? Doodh garam ho gaya?" (Payal? Did you heat the milk up?) she asked casually. "Ji! Main abhi Khushi ko deke aati hoon" came Payal's reply from the kitchen.

"Kyun? Khushi ko kya hua hai?" (What's wrong with Khushi?) asked Arnav, his eyes widening a little more by every passing second. "Huh?" Anjali indifferently looked at Arnav and went back to her magazine. "I asked what's wrong with Khushi?" Arnav had started to lose his patience all over again. "Does it matter?" Anjali replied without looking up. "What the!! Aap.." Arnav started but stopped in between. He might as well find it out himself.

Arnav quickly made his way upstairs and opened the his bedroom door softly, hoping not to disturb Khushi but was relieved to see a smiling Khushi sitting up on their bed and kissing Payal goodnight. "Nothing's visibly wrong" he thought to himself and entered the room. Both of them looked at the new entrant but didn't flash their usual greeting smile. "That's unusual" Arnav noted. Payal quickly pecked her sister on the cheek and exited the room without even looking at him once.

Sensing something really wrong, Arnav dropped his suit on the recliner and walked upto Khushi's side of the bed. Seating himself beside her, he gently asked "Khushi, what's wrong?" Khushi looked at him with incredulous eyes. She was about to melt down to his puppy dog eyes when she held herself back. "Not this time" she said to herself. She moved forward and lay down fully on the bed, fixed the duvet over her body, snuggled the pillow in closer and turned her back towards him.

Arnav was losing his grip again and was about to shout when he heard Khushi calmly say "Phir se chillana shuru mat kijiye. Mujhe neend aa rahi hai. Mujhe sona hai." (Don't start screaming for god's sake. I'm trying to sleep here.) "WHAT THE!!" He went up to the cupboard, took his night tracks and tee and slammed the door of the washroom on his way in.

He came out and Khushi shut her eyes immediately in a jiffy, pretending to be asleep. "WHAT THE!!" he repeated. "Sanka Devi in the truest form" he muttered to himself. Deciding to ignore the coldness, he sat down on the recliner and started going through some piled up files kept on the table. He kept looking file after file when he came across a familiar red file. "Looks familiar" he thought to himself and picked it up only to get the shock of his life.

"Oh my God! That's why she came to meet me! Damn! Why don't I ever listen to her..." he brutally cursed himself. "How could I ever make up for what I've done. Hold on! What was the report doing with my files?"

He didn't realise he had spoken his thoughts out loud until a poker faced Anjali spoke up from the door "That's the only way to reach you, Mr. Arnav Singh Raizada. Your pregnant wife has to keep the biggest news in her life along with your WORK to get the needed attention. Well done, Chotte" and to that Arnav Singh Raizada for the first time in his life was rendered speechless. His wife had to get the biggest news of their life to him through his work? That was it.He had to make it right. There was no other way. He had to. Yes, he would. It was about his Khushi and his to-be-family and nothing could come between them. Never. Ever.

He heard the doors close as he sat down on the recliner and started making plans. He had to come with something really big this time. There were always plans. After a couple of minutes, the gloom disappeared. The clouds faded. ASR raised his head from his palms. The expression of guilt was long lost and on his face was the wicked smile and his eyes twinkled with mirth. "Mrs. Khushi Kumari Gupta Singh Raizada. You can never deny me again in your life" he whispered.
