She fingered the frame delicately, her thumbs sweeping the dust over the smiling faces; the easy banter and the laughter could still be heard in her ears, she giggled quietly as she remembered the jokes that were passed between the lot. Oh she missed them. She really did.
She sighed as she went through the box, her fingers wadding through the numerous 'goodbye' cards until she encountered the album and the various objects surrounding it, her fingers smoothing over Sona's 'gold' pen, fingering Rae's silk scarf and her eyes shone with tears as she glanced at Vandana's picture. The fact was, she refused to take a picture of her face but her shoes were the shining glory, she had snatched the camera out of her hands and taken quite a few snaps of her red louboutins, Aashifa wasn't allowed to have them however she could stare at them all day, in remembrance of the girl with the shiny shoes. Aashifa giggled again, remembering her scream's of protests when the camera lens was anywhere near her face.

Her fingers encountered the golden pen, it wasn't really gold but it meant more than any other gift Sona had ever given her. Aashifa had won it in a bet; both Sona and Aashifa were in the same English class a competition was announced and both of them took part in it happily with no snide remarks however nature took its toll and girls who were considered friends decided to sprinkle salt on the wounds. Various comments had passed through the year, claiming Sona had cheated, and Aashifa had copied, neither of them defended the other however a bet was laid on the table. If Aashifa won then one of Sona's possessions would be hers and if Aashifa won then she would do Sona's science homework for the rest of the year.
Aashifa had won.
This spelt bad news for Sona as she knew what Aashifa would take, her prized possession and arrogance would not let her see Sona's heart break. So she gave it up none the less, preferring to keep her pride and honour in tact rather than a measly thing that connected her to her mother. As mentioned Aashifa did not see past her own nose, all she saw was the gleaming gold in her hands, she didn't hear the muffled footsteps all she heard was the ink falling onto the page. She was so ignorant she did not see the tears leaking from her eyes, but it weighed on her conscious weighed on it so heavily that she returned it the very next day with a bear hug and a thorough apology followed by the chocolate-y goodness of a squashed brownie.
But somehow the pen had ended up in her locker, almost as if Sona knew that this was the last thing that would have connected them to each other.

Her fingers touched the scarf with shaky fingers. It had been a birthday present, the last birthday present she would have ever received. And the funny thing was this birthday present had Rae written all over it, the prints of Shah Rukh Khan were not to Aashifas taste, but she had accepted it gracefully with a small smile touching her lips and ever since then she refused to wear another scarf. None of the woolly ones her mother bought her were good enough, it was only until she started to see the print fade and the threads fray that she put it all away, petrified of the resulted outcome.

What went wrong many people are probably wondering?
Nature.
It took its course.
Four friends with clashing personalities, one was shy, the other outgoing and the last one was just too loud. It was not going to end well, but maybe that's how it was meant to be, it made them stronger as individuals, firmer in their beliefs and different in their outlooks on life.
Now after years of amputation you are probably wondering what lead them to each other again?
Their writing.
It would always keep them connected, always. Maybe Vandana would actually respond to her casual hello this time? Maybe Rae wouldn't ignore her when she waved? Maybe Sona wouldn't just wave? Maybe. Just Maybe.
In a way it was no surprise to Aashifa that when she looked up her friends were looking back through the glass window, she smiled and tilted her head, her eyes shining with bright tears.
Maybe. Just Maybe.
