Sorry for the super-delay. 😭

Student life and exams and writing is a deadly combination for each other. I hope to get the next one done in next week or asap.

Seriously sorry.

Link to chapter 2

CHAPTER- 3

"Nupur!" He called out, but no reply came.

"Nupur"

"What happened? Is there anything wrong" came a reply in somewhere between worried and scared. Maybe he had screamed louder than he intended. Anyway it was still an emergency.

"My dear Nupur, what all do you think can possibly go wrong inside a washroom?"

She was dumb, it was official now.

"All I need is a towel, that must be lying on bed" he added " or maybe chair".

She looked back at bed, it was neither there nor on chair.

"Or maybe It's still in cupboard and I imagined taking it out"

"Or maybe you left it outside in balcony while you were talking on phone?" Came a voice from the room.

"Oh yes, I forgot about that possibility" he stretched his hand out but in vain."Now wifey, will you please hand it over to me?" Still empty handed he felt stupid. Mayank sharma didn't like feeling anything so lowly. "I am saying it for the last time, please give it to me" Since when Nupur became a rebel? Or is she pulling my leg? Whatever, one doesn't wants to pulled by leg standing half naked in a washroom. "Actually I wouldn't mind coming out just the way I did before marriage but that might not be feasible for you"

Instantly his hand was loaded with awaited piece of garment. Correction garments.

"I.. I.. I was searching for your shirt" came a stuttering reply.

Only she knew what his bachelor habits of coming out of bathroom in just vest and towel does to her senses. Every morning she has to escape his dressing time by either staying in balcony or pretending to read a magazine that didn't make it through her head while his masculine aroma filled the room.

"So where would you like to have lunch today?" he popped up emerging out of washroom, still buttoning down his shirt and towel hanging just on the verge of falling on floor. She tried concentrating on folding his cloths that were dishevelled while searching for a shirt moments ago. "Somewhere near Pantheon or Eiffel or Ronchamp?" He asked while combing his hair still in towel.

"Anywhere, but it has to be vegetarian."

"I know that much about you already in these 3-4 days wifey." She risked looking his way and regretted to catch him struggling to get in his jeans. Well, he still had the nerve to look up and wink at her. Why? Why does he has to make it more and more difficult for her all the time.

"Then don't you know I haven't been to Paris or for the facts any place that we have to visit in coming days? Why bother asking about things when you already know that I would have no idea" She fumed. Yes she was angry. More on herself for being affected by his ways of conduct than on him. It wasn't morally wrong for him to call her wifey or throw teasers around her now that she was legally his wife but all of a sudden his scandalous ways were making no sense to her. She liked the small conversations they had in past 3-4 days ever since being married. The former ice was breaking and she was more than satisfied with the pace. You can't jump into wife and man's role without being able to talk and understand the other one and there was no reason to deny the efforts he was making towards making it work. London marked the starting of their friendship and now Paris would do some more, she hoped.

"Okay so you'll follow wherever I lead you?"

If he was trying to flirt, he was doing it wrong and if he was trying to irritate her, he was so on track of getting shot in head. "Yes" She decided she was going to let him know about her 'silent treatment' gelled with angry wife mode. It's never too early to start claiming your wife's right when the person in question is too eager to let you have them.

Panthon, Paris. She still remembered all the sketches she had made of this very structure in her first year of college. It had degraded in conditions since then, 10 years were enough to turn a young lass into a lady and here it was standing since 1790.

What on the earth did strike ideas of constructing something so huge grand and meaningless? What was the need of such an exaggeration for a church? Seriously, People in those times must be too bored to come up with these ideas. More than the motivation for these illogical construction, thing that was confusing him was this girl who was acting as if she didn't know him but still was never losing his side. He wondered if she didn't knew much about this place alike the older ones, because she wasn't flaunting her knowledge about its architecture and when it was constructed, why it was constructed, by whom, for whom and most of all with what in their mind? Suddenly he was missing knowing all the history and facts of the place from her. And her not-so-impressed look wasn't doing any good for him. "Do you know when it was built?"

"Started in 1758, completed in 1790"

"Oh" Maybe he could get her talking by acting interested in a good for nothing, stupidity-personified type building. "By whom?"

"Designed by Jacques, constructed by Jean"

He laughed, "That is a kind of funny combination.." but stopped after a glare from her. "There is same kind of thing in Greece too with same name. Right?"

"Wrong"

He knew less but he always knew right. Always. "How come wrong?" Mayank sharma can never be wrong in terms of facts, though only meagre were known to him.

" Panthon, Paris is inspired from Pantheon, Rome. And the one in Greece you are confusing it with is Parthenon."

Ok. He was partially right if not entirely. "Ok. What kind of pillar are these?" He asked pointing towards one of the inner pillars in the hall.

"Do you know much about pillars?"

"No. Not much. Just little tad bits that you let slip."

"These are Corinthian order."

"Ok. I'll pretend that I understood."

She eyed him with raised eyebrows. She would have laughed at this, if she wasn't annoyed because of his earlier day time teases. He could be so cute and innocent one moment and other one could make him look equally mischievous and roguish. How she wished she could pull at his cheeks and smack her hand across his face. But no, she was angry and should maintain her calm.

Maybe he should try harder to crack this hard-core nut.

"You know I wouldn't mind talking on this in detail over a cup of coffee. And I believe star bucks is just over a turn."

"But I am not interested in discussing anything for now. Can we just walk some more and be done with this place?"

"Okay" He was confused. This wasn't how he hoped she would reply. In fact, he thought girls liked being asked out for coffee or something. And here he was rejected by his wife, none other girl. Pities on you Mayank sharma.

Phew! 15 minutes and it feels like I been mute from past from a century. He suddenly felt everything like that of a person who was denied the normality of speech by almighty since birth. Bored and helpless. He was thankful to the guide that they hired to show them around the place to keep the atmosphere lighter now that his wife was not in talking terms with him for reasons unknown or un-understood for him.

"Where are we going after we leave from here?"

She ultimately did break the silence. Heavens above aren't that lonely after all. "Ronchamp" He grinned, what felt like, after a long-long time.

"Do you mean Notre Dame du Haut?"

"Now what in the name of god is that?" He hadn't heard the name ever, let alone try spelling it or pronouncing it for the first time in front of her and make of fool of himself.

"Umm.. It's the famous chapel, By the architect Le Corbusier, It is located in Ronchamp. I thought we were going there, since it's the only place in Ronchamp that is known among tourists."

"Oh. OK." He had only read the name Ronchamp and Googled its location and placed it on their list of places to visit, without much of knowledge. Maybe he should Google more and read more of Wikipedia in future to dazzle his wife with his knowledge of such facts. "Shall we proceed then, Ma'am?" He deliberately emphasised and elongated last word that rewarded him with a confused, hesitant glance. Gesture enough to confirm the existence of the same old shy girl yet in there, and this made his heart inflated again.

Well, Notre dame was not as much of happy experience as he had expected it 2 days ago when he was planning the days in Paris in hotel room while she slept beside him with a sweet smile on that face of hers. He hadn't imagined even this fragile girl could be made of steel from inside and harbour rocky moods too. Whole Chapel was rewarded with her longing and calculating gaze, just not one spared for him. And rumours said Paris is the most romantic city.

To sum it all, he was sure she liked the place, maybe not the company, but surely the place, words weren't needed to know this much of the fact, now that he was starting to know her though her expressions and body language.

"This is nice. Thanks for bringing me here."

Snapping him out of his lane of thoughts she gave him a small smile. A smile that qualified for a gratitude but not pure blissful pleasure. How he wanted her untiring continuous chatter of blah-blah facts back, only he knew. "No needs wifey. Maybe we should move ahead now." Yes, he would never tire of calling her wifey, not till she stops eyeing him every time he calls her that or on other leg-pullers.

"Where do head next to?" Turning away, she escaped his mockery.

"Lunch maybe. If you allow so. My stomach growls and begs already."

"Ok. Then lunch it is."

"Now we now have a lot to discuss over lunch." He said in a rather serious tone that was unused till now in her context.

Blinking twice she wasn't sure if she heard it right or he actually was in foul mood. Did she overdo her drama of being angry with him. He seemed somewhat irritated, quite unusual for him.

"Discuss? About what?" She ventured cautiously in to the dangerous territory. One can never be too sure of mood swings of the any person and here the person in question was far more complicated than the word 'complicated' itself.

"Time will unravel all the questions my dear. 'A lot'- just to tip you off for the oncoming events of your life." Of course, How could anyone know if one is hoodwinking unless you look into their eyes. Mischief. Trickery. Tomfoolery or anything but seriousness floating in those eyes of dimpled-faced man. How can one stop smiling on this innocence beneath that rugged camouflage of maturity?

A lot- in words of Mr. Mayank sharma- meant simple silence. No mystery. No suspicion. Purely absence of useless words that could stain blissful silence.

Being the gentle man he was, Mayank asked his lady company to do the honours for ordering what she felt like having for lunch, now that restaurant was chosen by him, also partially because he was afraid of pronouncing the baffling names of dishes being served there.

"Premire apporter aux fraises Soupe Orange, puis Arlequin du Potager en Aigre-Doux, gougres, Vegan Galette des Rois et, enfin, persil-ail Crme. Merci." (Translation: First bring Strawberry Orange Soup, then Arlequin du Potager en Aigre-Doux, Gougeres, Vegan Galette des Rois and lastly Parsley-Garlic Crme. Thank you.) Out of all the things she liked about him, one thing had to be his quality of accepting his flaws and not putting on a show to cover them.

One more thing he was proud of, about his wife, was her vast knowledge. Not just the bookish facts or digits but the actual knowledge of going around the world. But right now 'a lot' things needed to be discussed. Not in traditional manner, but his style.

She avoided looking his way. Yes, although she can never thank him enough for taking her to places that she saw only in dreams but she still was bent to let him know that he can't always have his way with her after teasing her every time. She didn't know if her not talking to him would make a difference or not but at least she'll be satisfied with herself for she did something. She did felt apprehensive when he warned for some 'talk' but then he wasn't being serious, was he?

She hadn't noticed she was staring at the rose that was placed in small cylindrical tube like vase in exact centre of the table, until she found out he too coincidently, was gazing at the same rose too. Maybe in a deep though... but then he looked up into her eyes, catching her off guards. Hastily she caught anything that she could find first, menu here, and started reading it like it was the holy bible and could keep her safe from all evils of world. She could hear him picking up his copy of menu. From beneath her lashes she could sense him looking at menu too. She flipped the menu card and started going through the other side of it. Cloud of confusion became denser when he too did the same. Was he copying her? If yes, it was stupid and just so not him. She kept the menu card back on table, slowly. He too did imitating her actions as well as motion. Both settled back on chair in same posture, crossing legs. Didn't he knew it was a girly posture? Or wasn't it? She observed her own sense was on holiday these days.

Again picking up the menu card she sat straight. As expected, he too followed. Taking on again going through the dish's names for 5 seconds she slapped the menu card on table, loud enough to startle him and soft enough for other's not to notice what these Indians were up to.

"What's going on here?" She asked with a smile on lips and throwing daggers from eyes. Well, she hoped it came out as she tried.

He had a huge urge to laugh and peck her cheeks. She looked cute when she tried to look angry. Even cuter when she fails to. "What's going on Nupur?" He asked with all the innocence he could muster after keeping all mischief at bay. Narrowed eyes told him she wasn't the one to be fooled. Of course he knew, that was the fun after all.

Waiter came with starters at that very moment, not letting her give him more of her accusing stares.

Strawberry-orange Soup was nothing what she had tasted in Indian French restaurants. And salad too was out of the world. She was satisfied with herself for being able to recognize vegetarian dishes from all those names, with all the bits and pieces of French she knew. She risked looking in his direction again. This was getting out of hand now. Same posture, same angle of bent on table, right elbow on table, mirroring her left one and having soup with his non-dominant left-hand. He too stopped to give her the mirrored stare, just not the same expression of surprise but confusion.

"What?"

"What?" He replied again with same mischief hidden under layers of innocence.

"Stop it Mayank. It's no funny."

"What's not funny wifey?"

"This!" She left her soup spoon in bowl and sat back in her chair. He did too. "This. Why are you following my actions?"

"I am not." Sounding surprised enough to convince anyone but her. "I was only getting comfortable in my chair to talk"

"We are not talking. Not yet." With this statement she resumed with soup, now more determined to ignore the mirror-mime of a husband, that sat before her.

Try as hard as she may, she wasn't able to totally put him out of sight and behave downright rude by disregarding his presence. One moment came, when she tried to bite into a piece of stuffed potato, dipped in chilli sauce while simultaneously stealing a glance at him. She caught him wrestling a huge piece of salad into his mouth clumsily. In all the effort to gulp down her food and control her laugh, spices got her throat making it hard to do either. Half choking half laughing and coughing she tried grabbing something to hold her.

He swiftly filled a glass of water and handed it over to her. In the moments of sputtering and gulping and laughing whole heartily, she waved her unsuccessful drama of staying furious with the most delightful and adorable species of human race a final good bye.

Laughing together no two people can hate each other, even if they are laughing on each other.

Yes, I too wanna see him like that 😉 who wouldn't? 😆
And one thing I wanted the state was, Here, In this FF, Nupur is not the usual chirpy, outgoing or talkative one. She is the serious one in relationship, whereas Mayank being the fun part.
Things have been such that they know about each-other since childhood, but not actually know each-other. If you know what I mean. 😊

Actual action or romance won't there in one sputter here, there is need for time and patience. Things will grow naturally, at slow pace. Hope, no one hates the wait. 😳

And yes, I am too much in love with this Mayank to let him go. 😉 Continuation will come.. 😊

Thanks for reading.😳

Love

"If he was trying to flirt, he was doing it wrong and if he was trying to irritate her, he was so on track of getting shot in head"

I like this Mayank. I really like this Mayank. I mean he is somewhere between being normal and being goofy. And i seem to like it. Also the part where he gets on his wife's nerves.

Jeez, its so obvious to the third person...the hidden unconfessed feelings. But then its not obvious to them, and it makes it so good to imagine and read.

And you my friend, the warmth that penetrates through your writing is commendable. I loved it. Can't wait for more.
